Abstract:
Abstract ∙ Observations on dispersal events of Torrent Ducks (Merganetta armata) The Torrent Duck (Merganetta armata) is a white‐water river specialist distributed along the Andes from southern Argentina and Chile to Venezuela. Here we provide new information on dispersal based on ringed individuals and occasional records from Argentina. Our observations suggest nocturnal or crepuscular dispersal events, a juvenile was recorded flying at night on land, 300 m away from the nearest shore. Dispersal distances were in general low (2–9 km). However, one ringed male dispersed between 22 and 84 km, depending on whether it flew over land or followed watercourses, respectively. It is necessary to study the dispersal ability of this species to determine the potential for genetic isolation between different populations and likely geographical barriers.

Abstract:
Abstract ∙ Feathers are one of the defining characteristics of birds and serve a critical role in thermal insulation and physical protection against the environment. Feather structure is known to vary among individuals, and it has been suggested that populations exposed to different environmental conditions may exhibit different patterns in feather structure. We examined both down and contour feathers from two populations of male Torrent Ducks (Merganetta armata) from Lima, Peru, including one high‐altitude population from the Chancay‐Huaral River at approximately 3500 m a.s.l. and one low‐altitude population from the Chillón River at approximately 1500 m a.s.l.. Down feather structure differed significantly between the two populations. Ducks from the high‐altitude population had longer, denser down compared with low‐altitude individuals. Contour feather structure varied greatly among individuals but showed no consistent difference between populations. These results suggest that the innermost, insulative layer of plumage (the down), may have developed in response to lower ambient temperatures at high elevations. The lack of observable differences in the contour feathers may be due to the fact that this outer plumage layer is more important as waterproofing than insulation.

Abstract:
In this work, the model of development of the P2P file exchange network organized by a torrent tracker is considered. The model is constructed on the basis of ordinary differential equations. The phase variables describing a status of a torrent tracker and the network organized by it (in first approximation is the number of the users of the tracker who are actively participate in information exchange, and the number of active torrents) are defined, the factors influencing the change of users number and the number of torrents are analyzed. On the basis of the analysis the system of differential equations, in first approximation describing evolution of the file exchange network organized by the torrent tracker — a hard dynamic model of evolution of the torrent tracker is written. Equilibrium points of hard model of evolution of the tracker are investigated, their possible quantity and type is described. All configurations of the general provision, possible in a hard model of evolution of the torrent tracker are described. The phase portrait of the hard model is represented. On the basis of the analysis of the hard model the system of differential equations describing evolution of a file exchange network with accounting of dependence of new users inflow intensity on a total quantity of potential audience of the torrent tracker, and also dependences of speed of torrents extinction on the number of users falling on one torrent — a soft dynamic model of evolution of a torrent tracker is written. Equilibrium points of a soft model of tracker evolution are investigated, their possible quantity and type is described. All configurations of the general provision, possible in a soft model of evolution of the torrent tracker are described. Phase portraits of each configuration are represented. The ratio of parameters necessary for the stability of the tracker a stable status is received. The influence of different administrative measures on a stock of the tracker stability in whole is analyzed. The need of support of torrents by administration at highly specialized torrent trackers with small potential audience is shown.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper reconsiders the anteriority of Robert Torrens’s theory of natural wage to that of David Ricardo. Ricardo was influenced by Torrens’s thinking when writing the chapter on “Wages” of the Principles. For many historians of economic thought, this influence is limited to Torrens’s focus on the socio-cultural aspect of necessity goods, which determine the natural price of labor. While this interpretation is consistent with that of Ricardo, we argue that the anteriority of Torrens to Ricardo more generally focuses on the method used by the latter to justify the indexation of money wages on the money price of subsistence goods. Finally, this paper shows that the tribute paid to Torrens by Ricardo paradoxically explains posterity’s misunderstanding of his theory.

Abstract:
Slushflows have been investigated in various regions of the Earth for more than forty years. Most of the observed events occurred in mountainous drainage basins at high latitudes, so relatively few observations and measurements are presented in the scientific literature. This particularly holds for slush torrents which are major slushflow events reaching supercritical flow velocities. Thus, information on dynamical features of slush torrents are rather limited, and most results are based on qualitative observations. On June 3,1995, during a field campaign in the Kärkevagge, a drainage basin in Swedish Lapland, a slush torrent could be observed and documented by a time series of photographs and by video recordings. Quantitative results from a photogrammetric analysis of the photographs show that the first wave front of that slush torrent reached peak velocities of more than 40 ms−1. A second wave front was able to reach even higher velocities due to the fact that the first wave had almost completely removed all snow from the transport path. Consequently, the viscosity of the flow was significantly reduced. To the author's best knowledge, these results are the first quantitative measurements of a slush torrent during its movement.

Abstract:
In the post-Fordist world, cities emerged as increasingly contested terrains upon which capital and ordinary citizens struggled to control the urban process. Henri Lefebvre discerned this contestatory dynamic early on and in response developed the ‘urban’, a concept that cleaves a critical pathway towards a host of material, cultural and ideological processes that attach to capitalist modernity. Around the same time, the Spanish novelist Gonzalo Torrente Ballester was working to sketch the contours of his magnus opus La saga/fuga de J.B. Torrente would eventually come to recognize the roles that the urban process and the socio-spatial dialectic play in mediating contemporary urban life. The present article thus carries out first a close reading of Torrente’s personal journals to detail the ascendency of the ‘urban dominant’ as a central structuring component of his fictional writings. Thereafter, the critical analysis of La saga/fuga de J.B. will reveal that the ‘urban dominant’ stands concealed at the heart of this notoriously complicated novel. This urban cultural studies reading of La saga/fuga de J.B. will argue that, like Lefebvre, Torrente denounces capital’s static conception of space at the same time that he draws upon historical movements of urban protest for textual inspiration. And what will eventually emerge is that, beyond a master of the metafictional novel, Torrente was also an astute observer of everyday life in the urban context.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Gonzalo Torrente Ballester’s novella, Ifigenia (1950) has been read consistently as a critique of the consolidating Francoist state of the 1940s and an early example of his ‘demythologizing’ technique. This article seeks to open discussion on aspects of the text that have not attracted critical attention to date. It traces the unacknowledged legacies of Euripides’ Iphigenia in Aulis in the text, most visible in both authors’ emphasis on the capacity of language for deceit. Drawing on Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism, it argues that Torrente’s Ifigenia should be read not only in the context of post-Civil War Spain but also in the wider socio-political context of post-Second World War Europe. It argues that the consistent suppression of expression of emotion throughout the text produces an absence of tragedy in Torrente’s retelling of the myth, and outlines how this relates to the post-war contexts of Spain and Europe.

Abstract:

The study conducted in arid areas of Dera Ghazi Khan occasionally affected by hill torrents (Suri-Lund, Vidore, Sakhi-Sarwar, Mithawan) coming from Koh-e-Suleman range. The study found that hill torrent water is used for agriculture, domestic and livestock. The management of this water significantly affects on income, crop yield, soil fertility, health conditions and living standard of farmers. The local cost effective methods to store this water include wah, dubba and bundh but most of water is wasted as they are insufficient. The water distribution mechanism fosters cooperation and helps to form new relations with co-farmers. The study suggested that government and NGOs should help people to construct concrete diversions, bundhs, ponds and dams to manage hill torrent water.

This paper analyzes how Robert Torrens's system of prices is applied to the aggregate economy. His personal interpretation of Say's Law is articulated with a numerical illustration and the Hawkins-Simon conditions to exemplify how the correct supply of the ingredients of capital is presented as a necessary condition for the full clearing of markets. Next, the possible causes of a shortage in effectual demand are discussed. The quantitative illustrations developed by Torrens are carefully reviewed to show how the monetary factors play a crucial role during the general glut, as well as the appropriate policy measures to stabilise the economy. The final comments reflect on the originality of Torrens's theoretical work.

Abstract:
In Canada, debris torrents (also referred to as channelized debris flows) occur in parts of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon. At least 17 deaths and an estimated $100 million of damage to bridges and property can be attributed to this natural hazard. The debris mainly comprises large boulders, rock fragments, gravel- to clay-sized material, tree and wood mulch—materials that accumulate in the mountain creeks. To be susceptible to a debris torrent, a creek must have a drainage area within a critical range, a profile that is sufficiently steep, an accumulation of debris, and some form of triggering mechanism. The most common triggering mechanism is an extreme water discharge, which may result from a very intense rainfall or a temporary damming of the creek. In western Canada, the resulting torrents involve masses of debris, typically less than 50 000 m3, that travel down creeks at speeds between 3 and 12 m/s.Several passive and active forms of mitigation can be used to reduce the impact of debris torrents on creek crossings and neighbouring residents. Passive mitigation methods include avoidance of the area, relocation of structures and facilities, land use restrictions, and some form of warning system. Active mitigation methods include remedial measures to remove or counter the causes, and various forms of designed protection. Constructing check dams near the headwaters of the creek and stabilizing the valley slopes that border the creeks are examples of remedial measures. Constructing debris barriers or clear span bridges with adequate clearance are examples of designed protection.Howe Sound, north of Vancouver, British Columbia, has had a relatively high number of debris torrents. Recently, several major studies have addressed the extent of the hazard and recommended mitigative measures for this area. Many of the examples presented in this paper are drawn from this case history. Abstract:
Abstract. Debris flows represent a major threat to infrastructure in many regions of the Alps. Since systematic acquisition of data on debris-flow events in Switzerland only started after the events of 1987, there is a lack of historical knowledge on earlier debris-flow events for most torrents. It is therefore the aim of this study to reconstruct the debris-flow activity for the Reuse de Saleinaz and the La Fouly torrents in Val Ferret (Valais, Switzerland). In total, 556 increment cores from 278 heavily affected Larix decidua Mill., Picea abies (L.) Karst. and Pinus sylvestris L. trees were sampled. Trees on the cone of Reuse de Saleinaz show an average age of 123 years at sampling height, with the oldest tree aged 325 years. Two periods of intense colonization (the 1850s–1880s and the 1930s–1950s) are observed, probably following high-magnitude events that would have eliminated the former forest stand. Trees on the cone of Torrent de la Fouly indicate an average age of 119 years. As a whole, tree-ring analyses allowed assessment of 333 growth disturbances belonging to 69 debris-flow events. While the frequency for the Reuse de Saleinaz study site comprises 39 events between AD 1743 and 2003, 30 events could be reconstructed at the Torrent de la Fouly for the period 1862–2003. Even though the two study sites evince considerably different characteristics in geology, debris-flow material and catchment morphology, they apparently produce debris flows at similar recurrence intervals. We suppose that, in the study region, the triggering and occurrence of events is transport-limited rather than weathering-limited.

Abstract:
Abstract. Debris flows have been recognized to be linked to the amounts of material temporarily stored in torrent channels. Hence, sediment supply and storage changes from low-order channels of the Manival catchment, a small tributary valley with an active torrent system located exclusively in sedimentary rocks of the Chartreuse Massif (French Alps), were surveyed periodically for 16 months using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) to study the coupling between sediment dynamics and torrent responses in terms of debris flow events, which occurred twice during the monitoring period. Sediment transfer in the main torrent was monitored with cross-section surveys. Sediment budgets were generated seasonally using sequential TLS data differencing and morphological extrapolations. Debris production depends strongly on rockfall occurring during the winter–early spring season, following a power law distribution for volumes of rockfall events above 0.1 m3, while hillslope sediment reworking dominates debris recharge in spring and autumn, which shows effective hillslope–channel coupling. The occurrence of both debris flow events that occurred during the monitoring was linked to recharge from previous debris pulses coming from the hillside and from bedload transfer. Headwater debris sources display an ambiguous behaviour in sediment transfer: low geomorphic activity occurred in the production zone, despite rainstorms inducing debris flows in the torrent; still, a general reactivation of sediment transport in headwater channels was observed in autumn without new debris supply, suggesting that the stored debris was not exhausted. The seasonal cycle of sediment yield seems to depend not only on debris supply and runoff (flow capacity) but also on geomorphic conditions that destabilize remnant debris stocks. This study shows that monitoring the changes within a torrent's in-channel storage and its debris supply can improve knowledge on recharge thresholds leading to debris flow.

Abstract:
Abstract. On 7 August 2010, catastrophic debris flows were triggered by a rainstorm in the catchments of the Sanyanyu and Luojiayu torrents, Zhouqu County, Gansu Province northwestern China. These two debris flows originated shortly after a rainstorm with an intensity of 77.3 mm h−1 and transported a total volume of about 2.2 million m3, which was deposited on an existing debris fan and into a river. This catastrophic event killed 1765 people living on this densely urbanised fan. The poorly sorted sediment contains boulders up to 3–4 m in diameter. In this study, the geomorphological features of both debris flow catchment areas are analyzed based on the interpretation of high-resolution remote sensing imagery combined with field investigation. The characteristics of the triggering rainfall and the initiation of the debris flow occurrence are discussed. Using empirical equations, the peak velocities and discharges of the debris flows were estimated to be around 9.7 m s−1 and 1358 m3 s−1 for the Sanyanyu torrent and 11 m s−1 and 572 m3 s−1 for the Luojiayu torrent. The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of the conditions leading to catastrophic debris flow events.

Morphometry of the Watershed of Verdinho River, Southwest of Goiás, BrazilA B S T R A C TConsidering the importance of water resources to the economical and social development of a nation, representative data about the geometry, the relief and watershed drainage have become necessary to subsidize the implementation of actions and public policies regarding planning and management of this resource in an effective and efficient way. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to analyze the morphometry of the watershed of Verdinho River of x hectares. This water unit is an important water source for the economical and social development of the municipality of Rio Verde, Southwest of Goiás. The study was accomplished with the use of mathematical models, products of remote sensing and geoprocessing techniques. The study area presents morphometric variables which, associated to geological formations, to soils and rainfall, are predominantly favorable to the water conservation and recharge of this system. However, the elongated shape and possible occurrence of intense rainfall in the river head subject this watershed to eventual torrents, being able to cause environmental and economic damages and others in the mid and lower watershed positions; the maximum altimetric amplitude, the biggest slopes, water density, drainage density, the presence, in a lowest percentage, of Red Argisol, Litholic Neosol and Red Nitosol are favorable to soil loss. The results indicate that the anthropic actions in the study area must contemplate management and conservationist practices of the soil. These results will subsidize the planning and environmental management of this water resource, besides serving as a base to other operations locally and in other regions, contributing to the preservation of the water in quantity and proper quality for different uses. Keywords: Geotechnologies; Mathematical Models; Water Resources

Abstract:
Abstract. The main goals of this study were to identify the alpine torrent catchments that are sensitive to climatic changes and to assess the robustness of the methods for the elaboration of flood and debris flow hazard zone maps to specific effects of climate changes. In this study, a procedure for the identification and localization of torrent catchments in which the climate scenarios will modify the hazard situation was developed. In two case studies, the impacts of a potential increase of precipitation intensities to the delimited hazard zones were studied. The identification and localization of the torrent and river catchments, where unfavourable changes in the hazard situation occur, could eliminate speculative and unnecessary measures against the impacts of climate changes like a general enlargement of hazard zones or a general over dimensioning of protection structures for the whole territory. The results showed a high spatial variability of the sensitivity of catchments to climate changes. In sensitive catchments, the sediment management in alpine torrents will meet future challenges due to a higher rate for sediment removal from retention basins. The case studies showed a remarkable increase of the areas affected by floods and debris flow when considering possible future precipitation intensities in hazard mapping. But, the calculated increase in extent of future hazard zones lay within the uncertainty of the methods used today for the delimitation of the hazard zones. Thus, the consideration of the uncertainties laying in the methods for the elaboration of hazard zone maps in the torrent and river catchments sensitive to climate changes would provide a useful instrument for the consideration of potential future climate conditions. The study demonstrated that weak points in protection structures in future will become more important in risk management activities.

Abstract:
Abstract. Heavy precipitation can mobilize tens to hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of sediment in steep Alpine torrents in a short time. The resulting debris flows (mixtures of water, sediment and boulders) move downstream with velocities of several meters per second and have a high destruction potential. Warning protocols for affected communities rely on raising awareness about the debris-flow threat, precipitation monitoring and rapid detection methods. The latter, in particular, is a challenge because debris-flow-prone torrents have their catchments in steep and inaccessible terrain, where instrumentation is difficult to install and maintain. Here we test amplitude source location (ASL) as a processing scheme for seismic network data for early warning purposes. We use debris-flow and noise seismograms from the Illgraben catchment, Switzerland, a torrent system which produces several debris-flow events per year. Automatic in situ detection is currently based on geophones mounted on concrete check dams and radar stage sensors suspended above the channel. The ASL approach has the advantage that it uses seismometers, which can be installed at more accessible locations where a stable connection to mobile phone networks is available for data communication. Our ASL processing uses time-averaged ground vibration amplitudes to estimate the location of the debris-flow front. Applied to continuous data streams, inversion of the seismic amplitude decay throughout the network is robust and efficient, requires no manual identification of seismic phase arrivals and eliminates the need for a local seismic velocity model. We apply the ASL technique to a small debris-flow event on 19 July 2011, which was captured with a temporary seismic monitoring network. The processing rapidly detects the debris-flow event half an hour before arrival at the outlet of the torrent and several minutes before detection by the in situ alarm system. An analysis of continuous seismic records furthermore indicates that detectability of Illgraben debris flows of this size is unaffected by changing environmental and anthropogenic seismic noise and that false detections can be greatly reduced with simple processing steps.

Abstract:
Protection of land with vegetation is the primary factor in the fight against water erosion with necessary application of biotechnical, technical, administrative and planning measures. One of the first basins to be treated with works for the protection against erosion and torrent control is the Gradasnica River basin. The basic parameters to display the changes of the hydrological status of the land are the state of erosion, the change of erosion-coefficient, annual sediment yield, specific annual sediment discharge through the hydrographic network, the value of the runoff curve number and value of the maximal discharge. Works on protection from erosion and regulations of torrents have influenced the decrease in erosion coefficient values from strong erosion (Z=0.99) to the value of weak erosion (Z=0.40), as well as the reduction of the maximum discharge value from Qmax(1956)=108,12m3/s to the value of Qmax(2014)=87.2 m3/s.

Abstract. Debris flows generally propagate along steep mountain torrents with dynamics primarily governed by gravitational and frictional forces. Thus, debris flows modelling can be successfully performed through the application of kinematic models, which consider only the effects of slope and friction and neglect the remaining terms of the momentum equation. However, the diffusion processes that can be observed in the field, such as the spreading of the debris flow wave as it flows downstream, can not be theoretically predicted by kinematic models, since diffusion is a second-order process neglected in the kinematic approximation. In this paper, this issue is discussed and an application for both a generalized diffusion wave model and a kinematic model is proposed of a debris flow which occurred in an Italian instrumented torrent to identify, in a real case scenario, the effective value of the neglected terms in the kinematic approximation.

In the current era of quantity theorists and inconvertible currencies, the real bills doctrine has received a surprising amount of recent attention (e.g., Sargent and Wallace, 1982; Smith, 1988; Selgin, 1989; Cunningham, 1992). While the real bills doctrine has a long history, the doctrine underwent considerable evolution during the period from the Bullionist debates of the Restriction Period, 1797–1819, to the Banking School versus Currency School debates surrounding the introduction of Peel's Act in 1844. The debates of the Restriction period are significant for being directly concerned with the workings of an inconvertible, real-bills-based paper currency while the later debates involved the real bills doctrine under convertibility. A primary objective of this paper is to explore the views that Robert Torrens held concerning the inconvertible and convertible versions of the real bills doctrine as a rule for central bank policy. Torrens's contributions as an anti-bullionist and, later, as a leading member of the Currency School reflect the importance that both convertibility and bank lending practices have for interpreting the real bills doctrine and the related law of reflux. The apparently paradoxical evolution of Torrens's monetary thought identified by Lionel Robbins (1958) is attributed primarily to the evolution of his views on bank lending practices.

Abstract:
This paper is devoted to the results of our issues exploration increasing efficiency action in extreme circumstances. Long time we study only combat oriented activities but now it is obvious that work with information torrents has the same features of stress as a fight. Our exploration was based on Oleg Bakhtiyarov ideas who study deconcentration of attention phenomenon. We adapted these ideas and combined traditional for our country approaches to hand-to-hand combat and special software. We used two main ideas for experiments. The first one was searching for hidden threats and stealthy attacks with deconcentration and after that was concentration attention on threats and destroying them. This gave us only part-time at deconcentration. We used “plane deconcentration” for searching and “multidimensional deconcentration” for action. The second idea was about using deconcentration for avoiding dangerous situations. That case was about full-time deconcentration. We discovered two types of usage deconcentration indirect or without direct contact with attackers but not only this feature and we need to explore it in the future. We discovered the same features in combat activities and works with information torrents. In addition, the same features were discovered between our data and the other from e-sports. In addition, the same features were discovered between our data and the other from e-sports. All of that gives us opportunities to use the deconcentration of attention methods for tasks that are needed for operators and common people in the information society (searching, detection, distinguishing, and filtration of information torrent) and, of course, for mental hygiene goals.
