Abstract:

Background: Although various treatment options are available for the management of melasma, still it is challenging disorder to treat. Apart from topical therapies, newer modalities like laser toning and chemical peeling are being explored to manage this notorious dermatosis. To evaluate and compare the efficacy and side effects of laser toning versus 50% glycolic acid peel in the management of melasma.Methods: A split face comparative study was done in 30 female patients with melasma. Over the right half of patient’s face laser toning was done whereas other half was treated with 50% glycolic acid peel. 4 such sessions were given at an interval of 15 days. Response to treatment was assessed using melasma area and severity index (MASI) score.Results: Baseline mean MASI score on right and left half of patient’s face was 7.85±3.34 and 6.25±1.56 respectively. After completion of 4 treatment sessions, it was reduced to 4.23±1.45 and 3.71±1.10 respectively with statistically insignificant difference between two halves (p=0.08). Recurrence rate of melasma was higher (46.66%) with laser toning in comparison to glycolic acid peel (26.6% patients).Conclusions: Glycolic acid peel and laser toning were comparable in terms of outcome with laser toning showing slightly better results. In comparison to peels recurrence rate and complications like hypopigmentation in Asian patients were higher with laser toning.

Berdasarkan hal ini, penulis ingin mengusulkan sebuah teknik pewarnaan yang biasa digunakan pada manga, yaitu metode toning, dan mengaplikasikannya pada proses pewarnaan di film animasi. Penulis berharap dengan menggunakan metode toning ini, proses pewarnaan di film animasi bias lebih cepat, tanpa mengurangi kualitas dari produk film itu sendiri. Every year, more than 100 animation films from many countries has been produced and launch all around the world. But we can’t make an animation film in a short time. Овај рад анализира језичке форме и прагматичко функционисање ограда у маке-донским и америчким новинским уводницима. Ово поређење је посебно занимљиво јер дајеувид у културне разлике које се огледају у начинима на којим македонски и амерички писциодлучују да ублаже своје изјаве тако да су прихватљивије за читаоце. Анализа је заснована накорпусу од 18 уводника (9 из Америчких новина и 9 из Македонских), који се баве свакодне-вним социјалним темама које су у интересу оба друштва. Осим тога, уводници се процењујуод изворних говорника (40 Американаца и 40 Македонаца) на скали од 1–5 за то колики јестепен њихове убедљивости. Свеобухватне анализе употребе и дистрибуције ограда пока-зале су да амерички писци уводника користе шири избор ограда у односу на македонскеписце. Осим тога, анализа је показала да коришћење ограде у оба уводника, македонском иенглеском, потакло је ефекат убедљивости који имају на читаоце. Што је већи број ограда,текст је убедљивији. Да сумирамо, ова студија даје јединствен увид у наше разумевање моћиновинарског дискурса и посебно уводника, и осветљава важну димензију њеног реторичкогзначаја за две различите културе. Иако овај рад се бави са ограниченим корпусом, он дајенеке врло важне правце које треба узети у обзир када се суочавамо са уводницима и каописци и као читаоци.

AbstractAerobic exercise training has been shown to attenuate cognitive decline and reduce brain atrophy with advancing age. The extent to which resistance exercise training improves cognition and prevents brain atrophy is less known, and few studies include long-term follow-up cognitive and neuroimaging assessments. We report data from a randomized controlled trial of 155 older women, who engaged in 52 weeks of resistance training (either once- or twice-weekly) or balance-and-toning (twice-weekly). Executive functioning and memory were assessed at baseline, 1-year follow-up (i.e., immediately post-intervention), and 2-year follow-up. A subset underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging scans at those time points. At 2-year follow-up, both frequencies of resistance training promoted executive function compared to balance-and-toning (standardized difference [d]=.31–.48). Additionally, twice-weekly resistance training promoted memory (d=.45), reduced cortical white matter atrophy (d=.45), and increased peak muscle power (d=.27) at 2-year follow-up relative to balance-and-toning. These effects were independent of one another. These findings suggest resistance training may have a long-term impact on cognition and white matter volume in older women. (JINS, 2015,21, 745–756)

Abstract:

The neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd-YAG) laser is used for removal of pigmented skin patches and rejuvenation of skin. However, complications such as hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, and petechiae can occur after frequent treatments. Therefore, identifying the risk factors for such complications is important. The development of a multivariable logistic regression model with least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) is needed to provide valid predictions about the incidence of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation complication probability (PIHCP) among patients treated with Nd-YAG laser toning. A total of 125 female patients undergoing laser toning therapy between January 2014 and January 2016 were examined for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) complications. Factor analysis was performed using 15 potential predictive risk factors of PIH determined by a physician. The LASSO algorithm with cross-validation was used to select the optimal number of predictive risk factors from the potential factors for a multivariate logistic regression PIH complication model. The optimal number of predictive risk factors for the model was five: immediate endpoints of laser (IEL), α-hydroxy acid (AHA) peels, Fitzpatrick skin phototype (FSPT), acne, and melasma. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.79 (95% CI, 0.70–0.88) in the optimal model. The overall performance of the LASSO-based PIHCP model was satisfactory based on the AUC, Omnibus, Nagelkerke R2, and Hosmer–Lemeshow tests. This predictive risk factor model is useful to further optimize laser toning treatment related to PIH. The LASSO-based PIHCP model could be useful for decision-making.

Abstract:

Skin toning creams and turmeric powders are widely used among Bangladeshi fashion and beauty concerned women and young girls in general. However, it has been reported that excessive use of skin toning cream and turmeric powder can cause various dermatological problems, including skin cancer. These creams and turmeric powder contain a wide variety of active ingredients, including Hydroquinone (HQ), Mercury (Hg), and Lead (Pb), that are toxic, and hazardous to health, especially after prolonged application. As a result, in the current study, we tried to assess HQ and Hg level in commonly used skin toning creams and Pb in turmeric powder in the context of Bangladeshi women collected from the local markets in Dhaka city. HQ, Hg, and Pb levels were analyzed for 40 different Bangladeshi skin toning cream products and 40 different turmeric powder samples. The HQ level was determined by the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method, the Hg level was determined by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (CV-AAS) using an automatic mercury analyzer, and Pb was measured by the flame atomic absorption spectrometry method. Among the 40 samples, 23 samples (57.5%) did not contain HQ, whereas 17 samples (42.5%) contained a high level of HQ compared to the standard limit. In the case of Hg analysis, we found that 28 (70%) out of 40 samples complied with the standard level of Hg, whereas 12 samples (30%) contained a higher level of Hg compared to the standard limit. Among the 40 samples of turmeric powder, 20 samples (50%) complied with the standard level of Pb, whereas 20 samples (50%) contained a high level of Pb compared to the standard limit. After three and six months of storage, we had similar results in all the samples for the three cases. After combining HQ and Hg data sets, we found that 14 (35%) out of the 40 samples had HQ and Hg levels within the standard limit, and 3 samples (7.5%) had higher quantities of both HQ and Hg levels and did not comply with the standard limit. 14 samples (35%) in the data set had higher HQ levels but complied only with the standard Hg level, whereas 9 samples (22.5%) had higher Hg levels and thus complied only with the standard HQ level. So, in 65% of the samples, we found the presence of excess level of either both HQ and Hg at the same time or any one of the measured chemical parameters. The use of these creams and turmeric powders, which did not comply with the standard limit, may pose a serious health risk to consumers. So, consumers should be aware of the risks associated with using these creams and turmeric powders, and policymakers should take appropriate measures to prevent the manufacturing and marketing of skin toning creams containing high levels of HQ and Hg and turmeric powder with high levels of Pb. Abstract In this paper we present the results of the first empirical reception study on the comparative strength of swearwords in two audiovisual translation (AVT) modes. We test the assumption/hypothesis that swearwords are perceived as stronger in writing (i.e. subtitles) than in spoken language (i.e. dubbing), which has led to the long-held translation practice of toning down or deleting swearwords more in subtitles than in dubbing. By means of an online survey, participants were asked to a) rate the psychological distance between the connotative meanings of swearwords embedded in ten film clips on a four-point strength scale, and b) comment on their ratings in open-ended text boxes. The results of various types of quantitative analysis show that our participants do not rate swearwords in subtitles higher than in dubbed clips. The qualitative analysis identified contextual factors (genre/director of film, participating characters and their relationship, setting and linguistic context) as well as viewer characteristics (gender, swearing habits and reactions to swearing) as main determinants of swearword strength. The convention of toning down or deleting swearwords more in subtitles than in dubbed audiovisual products thus seems to be based on an invalid assumption and ought to be abandoned altogether.

Abstract:

The skin color of the human face is mainly determined by the content of hemoglobin (in red) and melanin (in brown). RBX image technology transforms full-color images into RBX color space, in which the "Red" component is associated with hemoglobin, and the "Brown" component is associated with melanin. This article presents a skin condition evaluation system based on RBX image technology, which is practically applied to the identification of the severity of rosacea patients, as well as the whiteness of the skin of the patient receiving pulse laser toning. In the research of rosacea grading, we analyze the "Red" component image and establish the R-G index to grade the severity of rosacea. It was found that the value of the R-G index increased with the severity of rosacea. ANOVA test results show significant differences among the four severity groups. In the research on the effect of facial skin toning by pulsed laser, we analyzed the "Brown" component image and established five brightness levels as indicators to evaluate the skin whitening effect. The result shows that the ups and downs of these brightness levels reflect changes in skin tone. These indicators provide a new way for quantification of skin conditions.
