Lubin, Timothy. The Vedic Graduate. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198702603.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter reconstructs the way the concept of the Vedic graduate (snātaka) changed during the formulation of the doctrine of varṇāśramadharma in early Dharmaśāstra. With the introduction of the doctrine that Vedic study should be a necessary prerequisite to Ārya marriage and householder status of the three higher social classes (varṇas), the formerly elite status of one who has completed the rigors of the brahmacarya regimen of study becomes notionally applicable to a wider range of males, including those with only basic or even token training in Veda. This is evident in the way the snātaka rules are interwoven in the chapter on householder dharma in the Mānavadharmaśāstra. But in this newer system, the snātaka, and the elaborate rules and honors applicable to him, come to signify a specially learned and disciplined Brahmin, and not merely any householder who had duly undergone the Vedic initiation that conferred Ārya status.

Glennan, Stuart. Types of Mechanisms. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198779711.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Minimal mechanism is a permissive conception that allows a vast and heterogeneous class of things to count as mechanisms. This chapter offers a taxonomic scheme to bring some order to that variety. Mechanisms are classified on four dimensions—the types of entities and activities of which they are made, the types of phenomena they produce, the different ways in which their entities and activities may be organized, and the different ways that the mechanisms come to be. This system of classification recognizes that mechanism tokens may at once be instances of many mechanism types, and that mechanism types may encompass sets of mechanism tokens that are in many respects heterogeneous. The chapter concludes by situating three varieties of mechanisms—machines, computational mechanisms, and social mechanisms—within this framework.

Abstract:
This article discusses electronic text as essentially just a sequence of characters. Text needs to be segmented at least into linguistic units such as words, punctuation, numbers, alphanumerics, etc. This process is called tokenization. The article mentions that most natural language processing techniques require text to be segmented into sentences as well. It briefly reviews some evaluation metrics and standard resources commonly used for text segmentation tasks. This article presents substantial challenges for computational analysis since tokens are directly attached to each other using pictogram characters or other native writing systems and outlines various computational approaches to tackle them in different languages. It focuses on the low-level tasks such as tokenization and sentence segmentation.
