Abstract:
This study tries to explore the degree of competition in tobacco Industry in Madura. By doing so, this study examines the competition in all markets of the distributional levels of Madura’s tobacco, from farmer to tobacco’s final user. In addition, for every market of the distributional level, the discussion is focused on the competition among the sellers themselves, the buyers themselves and also the consequences for the sellers and the buyers in terms of price, strategic behavior and profit. Linear “Structure-Conduct-Performance (S-C-P)’ model is being used as the main framework in this study. Additionally, this study uses primary and secondary data. Furthermore, this study shows that in the upstream industry of tobacco, the degree of competition is almost perfect, and as it gets closer to the downstream industry of tobacco the degree of competition is close to monopoly. Hence, the closer a firm to the upstream industry of tobacco, the profit is less, and as it gets closer to the downstream industry of tobacco, the profit is much higher, as well as its monopoly or market power. In turn, this condition is negatively impacting the tobacco farmer welfare as the upstream firm.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Increasing tobacco taxes, and through them, prices, is an effective public health strategy to decrease tobacco use. The tobacco industry has developed multiple promotional strategies to undercut these effects; this study assessed promotions directed to wholesalers and retailers and manufacturer price changes that blunt the effects of tax and price increases. Methods We reviewed tobacco industry documents and contemporaneous research literature dated 1987 to 2016 to identify the nature, extent, and effectiveness of tobacco industry promotions and price changes used after state-level tobacco tax increases. Results Tobacco companies have created promotions to reduce the effectiveness of tobacco tax increases by encouraging established users to purchase tobacco in lower-tax jurisdictions and sometimes lowering manufacturer pricing to “undershift” smaller tax increases, so that tobacco prices increased by less than the amount of the tax. Conclusions Policymakers should address industry efforts to undercut an effective public health intervention through regulating minimum prices, limiting tobacco industry promotions, and by enacting tax increases that are large, immediate, and result in price increases. Implications Tobacco companies view excise tax increases on tobacco products as a critical business threat. To keep users from quitting or reducing tobacco use in response to tax increases, they have shifted manufacturer pricing and developed specific promotions that encourage customers to shop for lower-taxed products. Health authorities should address tobacco industry efforts to undercut the effects of taxes by regulating prices and promotions and passing large and immediate tax increases.

Abstract:
Tobacco industry is one of the most profitable global industries with the steady increase in global demand for tobacco and tobacco related products. Tobacco industry in Croatia has a centuries-old tradition and tobacco is one of the most important non-food agricultural crops produced in Croatia. Moreover, tobacco industry in Croatia is one of the major revenue sources of the government’s budget. The aim of this paper is to determine whether tobacco industry in Croatia is attractive enough for a new player willing to enter the market. Paper provides brief overview of the tobacco industry and the impact it has on Croatian economy. Furthermore, paper explains how excise duties and product prices changed over time, shows market consolidation and concentration before and after the EU accession, and in detail depicts forces which determine industry’s profitability, i.e. its attractiveness.

Abstract:
Regulations to reduce the consumption of tobacco products have dual effects on economies. Economies that are net consumers of tobacco products experience welfare enhancing effects as a result of these regulations. However, these regulations can have adverse welfare effects among net producing economies. Many studies have explored these welfare effects on net consuming economies, whereas the impacts among net producing economies have been neglected. This research paper examined the adverse welfare effects of smoking regulations on small tobacco exporting economies with, a comparative advantage in tobacco production.

Lee, Sungkyu. "The tobacco industry in South Korea since market liberalisation : implications for strengthening tobacco control." Thesis, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London), 2011. http://researchonline.lshtm.ac.uk/768502/.

Abstract:
This research analyses transnational tobacco companies' (TTCs) broader strategies for market access and demand creation through understanding market liberalisation in South Korea's tobacco industry from the late 1980s in order to inform the strengthening of tobacco control policies within the country and other emerging markets. The research is mainly based on internal tobacco industry documents, made publicly available through litigation. Detailed analysis of industry documents related to South Korea has not been undertaken to date. Semistructured interviews and additional primary and secondary sources served as important supplementary data sources. The key finding of this research is that the market access strategies of TTCs, including direct and indirect lobbying on trade policies, were a response to South Korea's export-oriented economic development model and its negative attitude towards foreign investment. This was undertaken within the context of the transformation of the world trading system from the 1980s which created pressure on the country to open its market. After liberalisation, various aggressive marketing tactics to create demand for foreign brands were used by TTCs. The competition this engendered played a key role in the transformation of the Korean tobacco monopoly into a private, competitive business which emulated and refined the tactics used by TTCs. This, in turn, increased the extent and intensity of the aggressive marketing of tobacco products in Korea overall. Total volume of cigarette sales increased 25% as a result, making Korea the 8th largest tobacco market in the world by 1992, whilst smoking prevalence increased among young adults and females. The research concludes that a fuller understanding of TTCs' strategies for global expansion can be derived by locating them within the economic development models of specific countries or regions. Such analysis, in turn, offers important lessons for strengthening global tobacco control. Of foremost importance is the need for emerging markets to appropriately balance economic and public health policies when considering liberalisation. The South Korean experience also demonstrates that comprehensive tobacco control policies, as set out by the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, must be implemented prior to any market liberalisation and strictly enforced within a competitive market environment.

Abstract:
Even as Trinidad and Tobago seeks productive diversification away from the energy sector, the process underlying the countrys productive development policies (PDP) is in a state of transition from state-directed industrial policy to a newer approach with extensive private-public participation. This study explores the main characteristics of four PDPs in Trinidad and Tobago and reviews them following the related literature (e.g., Rodríguez-Clare, 2005a and 2005b, and Melo and Rodríguez-Clare, 2006). The four PDPs are: a) The process towards the Promotion of Clusters; b) the PDPs for the Tourism industry; c) the classical PDPs for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and; d) the Free Trade Zone as a policy designed to compensate for the failure of the State.

Abstract:
CARIFORUM countries have identified a number of priority industries and niche sectors that span manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, and other service sectors, which are viewed as having strong potential to contribute to economic growth and development. However, these sectors face a number of challenges to realize their potential, including limited markets, low labor productivity and inadequate skills for market demand, high energy and transportation costs, and high levels of debt. In order to overcome challenges to private sector growth, best practice suggests that analyzing the environment for private sector development and identifying specific barriers to growth are critical steps toward making these sectors more competitive regionally and globally. This project aims to make a contribution in this regard via the use of a value chain methodology. The industry selected for this project was the ecotourism industry, and it was studied in the context of four countries: The Bahamas, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana. The ecotourism value chain was analyzed. Challenges to the development of the ecotourism industry were identified in the selected countries, and a roadmap was proposed.

Abstract:

Environmental Management Insertion in Tourism: Sector Policies in the Caribbean. Inter-American Development Bank, April 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011024.

Abstract:
This study is concerned with the insertion of environmental management in tourist sector policies to ensure that threats are recognized and addressed. Four main characteristics of Caribbean tourism provide the rationale for this study. First, tourism is the single most common industry in the region - particularly in the island economies. Second, tourism is the fastest growing industry in virtually every Caribbean country, including those in which the sector is not presently an important economic contributor. Third, tourism also is the most important and, sometimes, the only productive sector in some of these economies. Finally, the environment (ecological and socio-cultural) which is the economic `goose¿ that explains the initial three characteristics above - is under significant threat in several Caribbean tourist destinations. The study analyses the cases of Barbados, Bahamas, Saint Lucia and Tobago and presents a last chapter with summary and recommendations.
