Recognizing Aboriginal Title: The Mabo Case and Indigenous Resistance to English-Settler Colonialism, Peter H. Russell, Toronto, Buffalo and London: University of Toronto Press, 2005, pp. xii, 470.Peter Russell's insightful book on Aboriginal land rights in Australia weaves together two tales, that of Indigenous crusader Eddie Koiki Mabo and the slow and arduous struggle of Torres Strait Islanders and mainland Aborigines to have their native land rights recognized by Australian governments in the hope of forging a new, post-colonial relationship. Along the way, Russell places these stories in the context of the push and pull of international events and movements that affected Australia's domestic politics and assesses the political progress of Indigenous peoples in Canada, the United States and New Zealand.

Abstract:
(1) Background: carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are attractive targets for the development of new anticancer therapies; in particular, CAs IX and XII isoforms are overexpressed in numerous tumors. (2) Methods: following the tail approach, we have appended a hydrophobic aromatic tail to a pharmacophore responsible for the CA inhibition (aryl sulfonamide, coumarin). As a linker, we have used squaramides, featured with strong hydrogen bond acceptor and donor capacities. (3) Results: Starting from easily accessible dimethyl squarate, the title compounds were successfully obtained as crystalline solids, avoiding the use of chromatographic purifications. Interesting and valuable SARs could be obtained upon modification of the length of the hydrocarbon chain, position of the sulfonamido moiety, distance of the aryl sulfonamide scaffold to the squaramide, stereoelectronic effects on the aromatic ring, as well as the number and type of substituents on C-3 and C-4 positions of the coumarin. (4) Conclusions: For sulfonamides, the best profile was achieved for the m-substituted derivative 11 (Ki = 29.4, 9.15 nM, CA IX and XII, respectively), with improved selectivity compared to acetazolamide, a standard drug. Coumarin derivatives afforded an outstanding selectivity (Ki > 10,000 nM for CA I, II); the lead compound (16c) was a strong CA IX and XII inhibitor (Ki = 19.2, 7.23 nM, respectively). Docking simulations revealed the key ligand-enzyme interactions.

Abstract:
Reinvestigation of the minor product of reaction of 6,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,e]thiepin-11-carbonitrile (I) with 1,2-dibromoethane in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide or benzyltriethylammonium chloride and 50% sodium hydroxide by means of 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy led to the formula XI named in the title, which was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The product of a similar reaction, carried out in dimethyl sulfoxide in the presence of potassium carbonate at 100 °C was identified as the stereoisomeric mixture of 11,11'-ethylenebis(6,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,e]thiepin-11-carbonitriles) (XII) which was separated to the components by preparative HPLC. The title compound XI was oxidized to the sulfoxide XIII and the sulfone XIV, and was transformed by reduction and the following methylation to amines XV and XVI. The reduction of the vinyl nitrile III with lithium aluminium hydride is complicated on the one hand by allylic rearrangement, and with cyanide anion abstraction on the other, the products being (E,Z)-mixture of 3-(6,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,e]thiepin-11-ylidene)propylamines (XVII) and 11-vinyl-6,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,e]thiepin (X). Abstract:
The title of this edited volume leads one to expect a timely contribution to the literature on language socialization, which has become increasingly concerned with bilingual and multilingual settings over the past decade or so. Some readers with general interests in bilingual and multilingual situations, or with special interests in education in such settings, may find this collection worthwhile. Those with a particular interest in language socialization, however, will be disappointed – and perhaps irritated to have been misled by the title. The volume's 16 chapters present a broad variety of interesting case studies, but very few among them can accurately be characterized as language socialization studies.

Reactions of the sodium salt of 4-hydroxythioxanthone (V) with dimethylaminoalkyl chlorides gave the ethers VI and VII. Partial demethylation of VII via the carbamate IX afforded the secondary amine VIII. Reactions of the 4-bromobutoxy compound XI with amines resulted in II, XII, and XIII. Reaction of V with 1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane and the following treatment of the resulting XIV with 2-propanamine gave the amino alcohol XV. The xanthone III was obtained via XVIII similarly like II. Abstract:
Modified syntheses of the title compounds used the enhanced reactivity of the aromatic fluorine atom in exchange reactions and proceeded via fluorinated intermediates. 2-(2-Fluorophenylthio)-5-(methylthio)nitrobenzene (III) was synthesized, reduced to the amine IV which was alkylated with 2-(2-chloroethyl)-1-methylpiperidine to compound VI. This was cyclized with sodium hydride in dimethyl sulfoxide to thioridazine (I) in excellent yield. The last two steps could be combined and thioridazine resulted from IV in one step. Synthesis of metopimazine (II) started similarly from 4-(2-fluorophenylthio)-3-nitrophenyl methyl sulfone (XII) which was reduced to the amine XIV and cyclized to 2-(methylsulfonyl)phenothiazine (XVII). Alkylation of XIV with 1-(3-chloropropyl)piperidine-4-carboxamide (X) proceeded with simultaneous cyclization and afforded metopimazine (II).

Substitution reaction of 11-chloro-7-fluoro-2-isopropyl-10,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,f,]thiepin with 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine gave the title compound I which proved a very potent and longacting oral neuroleptic agent (isofloxythepin). Its resolution by means of dibenzoyl-(+)- and -(-)-tartaric acid led to (-)- and (+)-enantiomer out of which the former represents the neuroleptically active component. In the synthetic sequence leading to I, preparation of two key intermediates was re-elaborated using new partial sequences: 4-fluoro-2-iodobenzoic acid (XIII) from 4-fluoro-2-nitroaniline (V) via the nitrile VI and the acids VIII and XII, and [4-fluoro-2-(4-iso-propylphenylthio)phenyl]acetic acid (XVIII) from XIII via XIV and the compounds XV-XVII. The sulfoxides and N-oxides XIX-XXII were prepared as potential metabolites of isofloxythepin (I).

This enjoyable, informative book would serve as an excellent introductory text in a beginning course on language acquisition or linguistics. The content is somewhat narrower than the title suggests: The book deals exclusively with L1 acquisition, and its focus is Chomskyan syntax and Universal Grammar, with a bit of semantics presented toward the end (i.e., phonology is not addressed). Most of the data is from English, though other languages are explored (e.g., French, Japanese), with three very interesting chapters on American Sign Language.

This paper is an attempt to study the representation of socio-cultural life in Kamala Markandaya’s Bombay Tiger. Being a leading post-independent Indian novelist, Kamala Markandaya has candidly portrayed Indian social, cultural and political life through her novels. She has rightly reflected these aspects in the work Bombay Tiger. Her description of various aspects and dimensions of cultural life is not imaginary and based on some literature, but it is based on carefully observed traditions and depicted cultural values and ideas. Soon after the death of Kamala Markandaya her daughter Kim Oliver found a typewritten copy of her novel and it was published posthumously with the title ‘Bombay Tiger’ in 2008. Charles R. Larson, one of the close friends of Markandaya and Professor of Literature, American University, Washington, DC has written an introduction to novel Bombay Tiger (2008) where he writes: Reading Bombay Tiger twenty years after Kamala Markandaya began writing the novel is a kind of revelation – especially for what it says about contemporary India” (Larson xii). Although Markandaya lived in abroad she kept in touch with the India. She actively read English newspapers which provided excellent coverage of occurrences in the commonwealth in general and India in particular. It has been rightly said that Kamala Markandaya’s “Sense of India was always extraordinarily vivid, filled with rich vitality, and imaginative in the way of all great writers (and especially novelists) who have been connected to place (Larson xii).

AbstractTraumatic injury, both unintentional and intentional, is a serious public health problem. Trauma care systems play a significant role in reducing mortality, morbidity, and disability due to injuries. However, barriers to the provision of prompt and appropriate emergency medical services still exist in many areas of the United States. Title XII of the Public Health Service Act provides for programs in support of trauma care planning and system development by states and localities. This legislation includes provisions for: 1) grants to state agencies to modify the trauma care component of the state Emergency Medical Services (EMS) plan; 2) grants to improve the quality and availability of trauma care in rural areas; 3) development of a Model Trauma Care System Plan for states to use as a guide in trauma system development; and 4) the establishment of a National Advisory Council on Trauma Care Systems.

Abstract:
Protected Rice Field is a legal norm regulated in the Decree of the Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency Number: 1589/SK-HK.02.01/XII/2021 concerning Stipulation of Protected Rice Fields Map in Regencies/Cities in West Sumatra Province, Banten Province, West Java Province, Central Java Province, Yogyakarta Special Region Province, East Java Province, Bali Province, and West Nusa Tenggara Province. The purpose of the establishment of the regulation is to control the conversion of rice fields into other functions such as housing, shops, offices and other investment functions. A Notary as an official authorized to make an authentic deed, based on the duties and authorities of a Notary regulated in the Notary Position Act, can also execute the process of splitzing a land certificate by first obtaining a position as a Land Deed Official (referred to as PPAT). Problems regarding protected rice fields in relation to the authority of the Notary in executing the splitzing of the certificates of rice fields are there are obstacles that may emerge in the implementation process due to the issuance of regulations regarding the protected rice fields. This study aims to analyse the public’s perception towards the designation of protected rice fields with the provisions of the freehold titles splitzing. The research method used in thi research is normative juridical research. Based on the analysis, the results of this study indicated that in the case splitzing the deeds of rice field land, the notary is still guided by the terms and conditions stipulated by the National Land Agency.

Abstract:
The title compound IV reacted with sodium borohydride to give the 4H-pyran VIIa and the dienone VIIIa whereas its reaction with sodium cyanide afforded exclusively the dienone VIIIb. Reaction of the salt IV with tert-butylmagnesium chloride or bromide gave a mixture of the 4H-pyran VIIa and the corresponding 4-tert-butyl derivative V. Upon treatment with hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen chloride, this mixture afforded 2,4,6-tri-tert-butyl-4H-thiopyran XI whereas aromatization with chloranil and subsequent reaction with ammonium acetate resulted in 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylpyridine (X). Analogously, the perchlorate IV reacted with ammonium acetate to give 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine (VI). Addition of triphenylphosphine and potassium phthalimide to IV afforded exclusively the 4H-pyran derivatives XII and XIII. A similar reaction of nitromethyl anion led to the 4,4'-bis(4H-pyran) derivative XIV. Mechanism of the studied reactions and the reasons for the low reactivity of the sterically hindered pyridine derivative VI with electrophilic reagents are discussed.

Abstract:
One should give full marks to the authors for coming up with a most unusual title for a book on economics—a title that grabs one’s attention. The book was most popular having reached the Number Two rank on the New York Times bestseller list for nonfiction. It consists of a number of articles (six to be precise) authored by Levitt and addressed to a largely lay audience. Although Levitt would like to see himself as a “rogue economist”, in this book he does apply “the basic microeconomic theory of rational utility-maximisation” to subjects that would not be covered in standard economic textbooks. In that sense, his rogue economist’s status becomes doubtful. This apart, the book makes for some interesting reading. Chapter 1 examines the issue of cheating. One would think that students taking their examinations normally cheat. This chapter introduces the notion that teachers also cheat, if the incentives are right. So do Sumo Wrestlers, as Levitt uses statistical analyses to prove how this is done. So one should not be too surprised when people cheat. Morality has no role to play in the decision to cheat.

Abstract:
The 2022 retirement of Justice Stephen Breyer and President Joe Biden’s promise to exclude all non-Black females from consideration for his replacement has sparked controversy. Some have praised the decision as essential to ensuring diversity on the Court and point out that there are more than enough qualified Black women to select from. And some believe the decision will result in corporate leaders making similar calls for equity in their own companies. Others have criticized the decision, expressing a belief that discriminating on the basis of race and gender is “not a great start in selecting someone sworn to provide equal justice under the law.” Even some commentators on the left have criticized Biden’s promise due to how it might “needlessly tokenize[]” the eventual candidate and “doom[] them to racist and sexist skepticism before they even [get] the nod.” A survey found that over three-fourths of respondents believe Biden should consider all possible nominees. Biden’s promise was initially made at the 2020 Democratic primaries. It was likely a wise strategic move by then-candidate Biden, as the pledge prompted the loudest cheers of the night at the Democratic debate where it was announced. It was also a powerful signal to those who doubted Biden’s treatment of Black women after his role in the 1991 Anita Hill hearings. The pledge may also have been a response to how Democrats underperformed among the Black female demographic in the 2016 presidential election. Indeed, Biden improved among that demographic in 2020. Regardless of the practicality of Biden’s pledge, refusing to consider people for a job based solely on their race and gender typically implicates Title VII employment discrimination protections. Title VII employment discrimination protections do not apply to the position of Supreme Court Justice due to its classification as an employee in the excepted service and not the competitive service.[12] This Article looks beyond that fatal determination to analyze what the result of Title VII principles would be if applicable. This analysis provides valuable insight into the purpose of Title VII protections and the significance of discrimination in one of the highest government positions. Part II of this Article provides a brief historical context of Presidents who have either expressed or implied that race or gender was a motivating factor for their Supreme Court nominations. Part III explains why Title VII does not apply to Supreme Court Justices. Part IV evaluates whether Supreme Court Justices are “hired” under Title VII. Part V looks at whether liability under the expansive employment-agency rule is applicable. Part VI examines the difficulty of identifying a harmed party. Part VII considers whether Supreme Court Justices are employees or independent contractors. Part VIII assesses whether gender could qualify as a bona fide occupational qualification. Parts IX and X likewise assess the related issues of whether customer preference or the authenticity exception are applicable. Part XI looks at the overall spirit of Title VII, which creates a heavy burden for those attempting to defend discriminatory hiring practices. Part XII analyzes whether such actions could be allowed under an affirmative action theory. Part XIII transitions away from legal implications and instead considers practical and ethical issues. Part XIV concludes by considering the legal and ethical implications of Title VII protections on other governmental positions.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of sources containing information on the land heraldry of the Tsardom of Moscovy, which reflected territorial title of the Russian rulers. The historiography usually mentions 5–6 artefacts and pictorial sources with images of such coats of arms. In fact, the complex of these sources can be significantly expanded. The author has managed to collect information about ten artefacts, two visual and four written sources, which allow to follow the evolution of the title heraldry in pre-Petrine Russia starting from the 16th century. Furthermore, two seals descriptions containing information about land coats of arms remain unpublished. The analysis of sources leads to the following conclusions. The beginning of the Russian title heraldry dates back to the reign of Ivan the Terrible. It was probably connected with refining of his territorial titles after the Livonian War. The Great Seal of Ivan the Terrible (late 1570s) has a set of title seals with images, most of them quite simple. These emblems reflect mainly natural or economic features of specific lands. Some emblems are purely symbolic, some borrow directly from Western European heraldry. These title emblems (called seals prior to the 18th century) continued up to the Romanovs’ reign. For instance, the front of the seal of Ivan the Terrible became a source for title emblems reproduced on the armor of Pseudo-Demetrius I, which was made by Western European masters. They probably took their cue from an imprint of the front side of the seal sent with the order. Emblems from the reverse side of the seal were not reproduced on the armor. Under Mikhail Fyodorovich (apparently, in late 1620s) the complex of title emblems underwent its first significant transformation. Some emblems continued to the end of the 16th century, some were formed anew. The new system of title emblems translated into a description of seals made after the Moscow fire of 1626. This document is also yet unpublished. The reform of the title seals may have been associated with making of a new complex of royal regalia in late 1620s. The new seals appeared in the composition of the cover for tsar’s saadak (quiver), which, apparently, was made at the same time.

ABSTRACT: In the year 1585 the flemish painter Hans Bol made the series of twelve drawings with evangelical themes related with the twelve months of the year and the twelve signs of the zodiac. That same year the engraver Adriaen Collaert engraved in copper the series with the title of Emblemata evangelica ad XII signa coelestia sive totidem ani menses accommodata, which is what served to give diffusion to the work. However, Hans Bol’s original drawings were always in private collections until 2014 when the King Baudouin Foundation of Brussels acquired them and published a work about the drawings and the first series of engravings. In this study, we make known this publication to researchers in the Spanish language and several incomplete series inspired by the Evangelical Emblemata are analyzed. KEYWORDS Hans Bol; Adriaen Collaert; Abel Grimmer; Diego Quispe Tito; Emblemata evangelica.

Abstract:
Sandra Chung, The design of agreement: evidence from Chamorro. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1998. Pp. xii + 423.Sandra Chung's leading contribution to the development of generative analyses of the morphosyntax of Austronesian languages is widely known. This book is the culmination of some two decades of research on Chamorro and is also, as the title suggests, an attempt to embed that body of research within a particular theory of agreement – one which has an explicitly syntactic flavour and which emphasizes the separation of morphology and syntax. Quite apart from the treatment of agreement itself, Chung also discusses a host of fascinating issues surrounding the analysis of Chamorro that have important ramifications for the analysis of languages that are typologically and genetically related to it, including the issue of configurationality and the nature of VSO word order. Additionally, there is extensive discussion of the treatment of wh-movement and the relationship of the Chamorro phenomenon of Wh-Agreement to the constraints on extraction observed in numerous other Austronesian languages and elsewhere. This book, along with the research program it represents, is an important addition to the literature on the less well-studied languages of the world and is obligatory reading for any syntactician with an interest in the cross-linguistic viability of syntactic theory.

The title dienones (2) and (5) were prepared from the chiral alcohols (7a) and (7b) respectively. These key starting materials were in turn available from the reduction of 3-acetyl-5-benzyloxy-8-methoxy-1,2- dihydronaphthalene (6a) and 3-acetyl-8-benzyloxy-5-methoxy-1,2- dihydronaphthalene (6b) with lithium aluminium hydride modified with (—)-N- methylephedrine and N- ethylaniline . Chiral phase high-pressure liquid chromatography was used to analyse the enantioselectivity of these reductions which were shown to yield variable results depending upon the origin of the reducing agent.

Abstract:
For almost 20 years now, Professor Wrightson's book English Society 1580–1680 (New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 1982) has probably been the most widely used text to introduce the social history of England in this period. But at the same time it is much more than this, in that it presents a powerful argument about change in religious belief, education, social hegemony, and concepts of order, all of which has provoked much scholarly debate. Now Wrightson has produced a volume on the economic history of Britain in the longer period from 1470–1750, which deserves to become as central and as widely read. Its arrival is doubly welcome because, since Christopher Clay's Economic Expansion and Social Change (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1984) went out of print some time ago, there has been no current text covering the economic history of early modern England or Britain. In part this unfortunate situation has reflected declining student interest, as economic history became identified with econometrics. But this lucid and engaging work should revive interest in a vitally important subject. As its title indicates, this is economic history with a human face, in which the main focus of analysis is always the social context and meaning of economic change to those whom it affected.

Abstract:
The existence of Guidance and Counseling services has strong legality and has become an integrated part of the national education system with the explicit recognition of the title of counselor in Law no. 20/2003 on the National Education System. Recognition of the legality of the counselor profession is in line with the paradigm of thinking that contains the concept of redefining education and the prepositions of guidance and counseling. Guidance is the process of providing assistance to individuals that is carried out continuously, so that the individual can understand himself, so that he is able to direct himself and can act naturally, in accordance with the demands and circumstances of the family and society. Career guidance is an activity and assistance service to students with the aim that they gain an understanding of the world of work as well as a guide on how to achieve it. In the context of implementing career guidance services in schools, every educator is required to understand deeply and thoroughly about the basics or main ideas that underlie the implementation of career guidance in schools. With this understanding, educators are expected to be able to strengthen confidence and a greater sense of responsibility. In general, the purpose of career guidance in schools is to assist students in understanding themselves and their environment, in making decisions, planning, and directing activities that lead to careers and ways of life that will give a sense of satisfaction according to, in harmony, and balance with themselves and their environment. In order for career guidance in schools to function properly in accordance with the goals that have been set, a supervisor or school counselor needs to pay attention to the principles of career guidance in schools, especially in the preparation of program implementation services.

Abstract:
This 12th part of our Nonlinear Dynamics Perspective of Cellular Automata concludes a series of three articles devoted to CA local rules having robust periodic ω-limit orbits. Here, we consider only the two rules, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], constituting the third of the six groups in which we classified the 1D binary Cellular Automata. Among the numerous theoretical results contained in this article, we emphasize the complete characterization of the ω-limit orbits, both robust and nonrobust, of these two rules and the proof that period-3 and period-6 ω-limit orbits are dense for [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. Furthermore, we will also introduce the fundamental concepts of perfect period-T orbitsets and riddled basins, and see how they emerge in rule [Formula: see text]. As stated in the title, we also focus on permutive rules, which have been introduced in a previous installment of our series but never thoroughly studied. Indeed, we will review some of the well-known properties of such rules, like the surjectivity, examining their implications for finite and bi-infinite Cellular Automata. Finally, we propose a new list of the 88 globally-independent local rules, which is slightly different from the one we have used so far but has the great advantage of being selected via a rigorous methodology and not an arbitrary choice. For the sake of completeness, we display in the appendix the basin tree diagrams and the portraits of the ω-limit orbits of the rules from this refined table which have not yet been reported in our previous articles.

Abstract:
Title compounds were prepared from methyl 2-O-acetyl-3,4-anhydro-6-deoxy-α-D-galactopyranoside (I). Solvolysis of I afforded methyl 3-O-acetyl-6-deoxy-α-D-gulopyranoside (II) from which in turn was prepared its 2,4-di-O-methanesulfonyl derivative III. The reaction of III with sodium azide undergoes under participation of the O-acetyl group in the position 3 and produces methyl 2,4-diazido-2,4,6-trideoxy-α-D-idopyranoside (V) that after hydrogenation and acetylation yields methyl 2,4-diacetamido-2,4,6-trideoxy-α-D-idopyranoside (VIII). Methyl 2,4-diacetamido-2,4,6-trideoxy-α-D-talopyranoside (XI) was prepared by its mesylation and by solvolysis of the product. Azidolysis of I, followed by hydrogenation and acetylation gave methyl 4-acetamido-4,6-dideoxy-α-D-glucopyranoside (XII). Its subsequent reaction with diethyl azodicarboxylate-triphenylphosphine mixture led to methyl 4-acetamido-2,3-anhydro-4,6-dideoxy-α-D-allopyranoside (XV). Mixture of methyl 4-acetamido-2-azido-2,4,6-trideoxy-α-D-altropyranoside (XVII) and its gluco- isomer XVIII is formed in the reaction of XV with sodium azide. Hydrogenation of XVII yields amino derivative XIX that in turn gives methyl 2,4-diacetamido-2,4,6-trideoxy-α-D-altropyranoside (XXI) by acetylation. Methyl 2,4-diacetamido-2,4,6-trideoxy-α-D-mannopyranoside (XXII) was prepared by its mesylation and solvolysis. All structures were confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR spectra.

Abstract:
Reactions of 2-(phenylthio)benzyl chloride with dimethylamine, diethylamine, pyrrolidine, piperidine, morpholine, and 1-methylpiperazine afforded the title compounds VI-XI. Reaction of 2-(phenylthio)benzaldehyde with nitromethane gave the nitrostyrene XIV which was reduced with lithium aluminium hydride to 2-(2-(phenylthio)phenyl)ethylamine (XVI). This was transformed to the N-methyl and N,N-dimethyl derivatives XVIII and XIX. The Claisen reaction of (2-(phenylthio)phenyl)acetonitrile with ethyl acetate afforded compound XXI which was cleaved by phosphoric acid to (2-(phenylthio)phenyl)acetone (XX). The Leuckart-Wallach reaction afforded the formamide XXIII which was used as starting material for preparing the amines XXIV-XXVI. The alternative approach to these compounds starting by reaction of the aldehyde XII with nitroethane was complicated by the fact that in addition to the nitropropene XV 2-(phenylthio)benzonitrile was also formed. The synthetic use of the inhomogeneous XV resulted then in mixtures of amines XXIV-XXVI with IV-VI which was followed by means of mass and 1H NMR spectra. The amines XXIV-XXVI were oxidized to the sulfoxides XXVII-XXIX. The oily bases were transformed to crystalline salts and spectra of all homogeneous bases were recorded. Pharmacological testing showed the amine VI (VÚFB-15 370) to be a promising potential antidepressant. The amines XI and XXV showed also pharmacological profile of potential antidepressants.

Hardback £50, US$69.95, ISBN 0 521 47125 7; paperback £16.95, US$24.95, ISBN 0 521 47707 7.Until recently I was convinced that by far the best textbook ever written on Generative Grammar was Perlmutter and Soames' Syntactic argumentation and the structure of English (1979). Unfortunately, the theory advanced there died out. As concerns its successor, namely GB-theory, I still believe that Andrew Radford's pioneering Transformational syntax (1981) is one of the best introductions to Chomsky's Pisa lectures, despite the plethora of competing textbooks that have appeared over the years. Now that Radford has presented his most recent book, Syntactic theory and the structure of English, I am inclined to believe that it should be considered a competitor to Perlmutter and Soames' book. Not only the similarity to Perlmutter and Soames' title, but also the pedagogical and systematic orientation of the new book invites comparison. As both books meet the highest standards with regard to clarity of expression and exposition, I recommend Radford's book as the best textbook for up-to-date syntactic theory, and I am convinced that it will play the same influential role as an introduction to the Minimalist theory as did the 1981 book for GB theory.
