Recognizing Aboriginal Title: The Mabo Case and Indigenous Resistance to English-Settler Colonialism, Peter H. Russell, Toronto, Buffalo and London: University of Toronto Press, 2005, pp. xii, 470.Peter Russell's insightful book on Aboriginal land rights in Australia weaves together two tales, that of Indigenous crusader Eddie Koiki Mabo and the slow and arduous struggle of Torres Strait Islanders and mainland Aborigines to have their native land rights recognized by Australian governments in the hope of forging a new, post-colonial relationship. Along the way, Russell places these stories in the context of the push and pull of international events and movements that affected Australia's domestic politics and assesses the political progress of Indigenous peoples in Canada, the United States and New Zealand.

Abstract:
(1) Background: carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are attractive targets for the development of new anticancer therapies; in particular, CAs IX and XII isoforms are overexpressed in numerous tumors. (2) Methods: following the tail approach, we have appended a hydrophobic aromatic tail to a pharmacophore responsible for the CA inhibition (aryl sulfonamide, coumarin). As a linker, we have used squaramides, featured with strong hydrogen bond acceptor and donor capacities. (3) Results: Starting from easily accessible dimethyl squarate, the title compounds were successfully obtained as crystalline solids, avoiding the use of chromatographic purifications. Interesting and valuable SARs could be obtained upon modification of the length of the hydrocarbon chain, position of the sulfonamido moiety, distance of the aryl sulfonamide scaffold to the squaramide, stereoelectronic effects on the aromatic ring, as well as the number and type of substituents on C-3 and C-4 positions of the coumarin. (4) Conclusions: For sulfonamides, the best profile was achieved for the m-substituted derivative 11 (Ki = 29.4, 9.15 nM, CA IX and XII, respectively), with improved selectivity compared to acetazolamide, a standard drug. Coumarin derivatives afforded an outstanding selectivity (Ki > 10,000 nM for CA I, II); the lead compound (16c) was a strong CA IX and XII inhibitor (Ki = 19.2, 7.23 nM, respectively). Docking simulations revealed the key ligand-enzyme interactions.

Mallorquí, Elvis 1971. "Parròquia i societat rural al Bisbat de Girona, segles XIII i XIV." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Girona, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/7846.

Full text
Abstract:
The parish, undervalued by the medieval historiography, was a fundamental institution for the arrangement of the rural society of the diocese of Girona between the 10th and the 13th centuries. It was a well delimited territory, whose inhabitants received the ecclesiastic sacraments of the clergymen who ruled the church and, across the fabric fund and the churchwardens, they took part in the management of the parish and of its economy. The parish influenced directly in the organisation of the rural settlement not only through the ecclesiastical villages, or "celleres", but also through the isolated manses into the boundaries of the parish. Besides, the parish was an important source of revenues: through the documentation generated by the bishop of Girona, the tithe appears as a revenue mainly in hands of feudal lords, gentlemen and important ecclesiastic institutions; the parochial clergymen only were receiving the first fruits, or "primícies", and other rights of minor value. Finally, the parish contributed significantly in the rural communities configuration of most of the diocese of Girona.

Abstract:
In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, French public sphere was marked by references to "Le siècle de Louis XIV”. This dissertation focuses on the structural ambiguities of the formula's consecration between Thermidor and the beginnings of the Restoration. "Le siècle de Louis XIV" was more a bone of contention than a memorial elevated by consensus to the glory of the Classics. The conflict in question is not, however, that of the Classicists against the Romantics but rather that of two irreconcilable versions of the Classical Tradition. Disputed between the apostles of the catholic revival and the heirs of the Enlightenment, literature from "le siècle de Louis XIV" was used in the service of contradictory regimes of exemplarity. What are the words and the tools of appraisal that can enable one to name and assess it ? Moreover, to what extent can this category, "le siècle de Louis XIV", bear the process of historicisation as it is de facto both the wavering subject of a sacralization which absolves it from the weight of History, and that of a more secularized admiration ? The present study introduces and analyzes the implications of "Siècle de Louis XIV"'s oscillating nature. Beyond the mere interpretation of Classicism, it is the definition of post-Belles-Lettres "Littérature" itself which is at stake

Abstract:
This thesis is the answer to Russian scholarly Vladimir Benechevitch’s statement that the schism of Churches in the field of Canon law could be dated by the ninth century, the time of appearance of the False Decretals and the Nomocanon in Fourteen Titles in the edition of Photius. Therefore, the bishop’s office presented by these collections is compared. Every chapter offers the comparison of the texts according to the vision of bishop’s office by every source. This comparison shows the unity of the collections and denies the schism. In addition, many aspects permit to connect the collections of Pseudoisidor with Greek and other collections of Christians of the East

“Shi Shuo Xin Yu” represents Zhi Ren Xiao Shuo in the period of the Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties. There are three sections and thirty-six chapters in this book. The period of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” is from the end of Dong Han dynasty to Dong Jin. There are about one thousand and five hundred people in the book. It mainly describes people’s commendable words and deeds, and life style. It also reflects intellectual thoughts, feelings, and lives of nobles of the period of time. This book can help people understand the history, politics and society of the period. There are many titles of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” because it was published a long time ago. It’s hard to identify which title was the original title. The common titles are “Shi Shuo Xin Shu,” “Shi Shuo” and “Shi Shuo Xin Yu.” Huang Changrui and Yu Jiaxi believed “Shi Shuo Xin Shu” was the original title. Wang Nengxian thought “Xin Yu” was not the latest title as everyone said, so “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” could still be the original title. However, Yang Yong and Fan Ziye thought “Shi Shuo” was the original title. This dissertation tries to find out which one is the original title based on scholars’ research. History suggests that the writer of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” is Liu Yiqing who lived in the Southern Dynasty Song. But when Lu Xun doubted that Liu Yiqing wrote “Shi Shuo Xin Yu”, the saying that the book was written by many writers is accepted by lots of people. Scholars who support the belief researched the theme from three aspects: the writing ability of Liu Yiqing, the intellectuals that Liu Yiqing hired, and the compilation of“Shi Shuo Xin Yu.” The intellectuals that Liu Yiqing hired were Yuan Shu, He Changyu, Lu Zhan, and Bao Zhao. It’s worth researching to know whether the four people participated in the writing of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” by studying their biographies and articles. Scholars thought “Shi Shuo” was written by many people because of the following reasons: some articles were repeated in the book, there are different titles given to the same person, improper categorization of the book. This dissertation tries to identify the writer of “Shi Shuo Xin Yu” by researching these aspects.

Master's thesis, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.2/11753.

Full text
Abstract:
Tiles in Portugal in the XVII and XVIII centuries are marked by the emergence of the creation of figurative pieces of high artistic value, in parallel with other simpler works, but with great decorative effect. Tiles have become a very common application in the covering of churches and convents. The aim of this dissertation was to study some of these works integrated in the Temples of the city of Santarém and, in this way, to show how the Scalabitan tiles are an important milestone in the history of art in Portugal. The blue and white checkers, or the green and white that we can admire in many churches are a particularity of Portuguese tiles, of which we have studied some examples. This decorative coating on the walls gives the viewer the perception of a diagonal rhythmic movement, as can be seen in the churches of Santa Maria de Marvila or Santa Iria. It was also intended to study how the political and economic contingencies resulting from the loss of independence (1580-1640) and the ensuing War of Restoration, led the tile makers to find various ways to increase the design of their works. We also tried to verify that, as a counterpart to the loss of quality of figurative themes, the decorative repertoire will enrich its inspiration in fabrics, embroidery, rugs and “formas vegetalistas”. This transformation is something specifically Portuguese and is very well represented in Santarém. If in the first half of the XVII century the so-called carpet tiles dominated, with entire walls covered in this way, in the XVIII century, blue and white prevailed. The reduction of the chromatic palette to blue allowed, as we have seen, to create a pictorial richness in the large figurative representations such as the Golden Chapel, the Sacristy of the Capuchos Church or the corridors and stairs of the Episcopal Palace.

La fingida Arcadia’s textual transmission, play of multiple authorship, includes a suelta conserved just in Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (S3), that corresponds to a text very far from the rest of the tradition. The suelta maintains unaltered the plot of the original play, even if it modifies all over the dialogues, cuts or lengthens whole fragments, intensifies the courtisan features and, most of all, elaborates especially the burlesque motive of the mondongas. At the same time, the author omits all those elements related to the practice of multiple authorship in order to proclaim, indirectly, to be the author of a different play, announced by the modified title.

Between 1290 and 1310, two Mendicant friars active in Florence dealt with the controversial issue of usury: the Franciscan lector Peter of Trabibus, who until now has been studied primarily for his relationship to Olivi’s teaching, and the Dominican Remigio de’ Girolami. In the mid-nineties of the thirteenth century, in the context of his quodlibetal questions, Peter of Trabibus discusses the social role of merchants and he broaches the question of the restitution of usurious gains. Some years later, Remigio also deals with similar issues in his quodlibetal questions and writes a treatise that bears the title De peccato usurae.

Abstract:
Charles I of Anjou restored the counties according to the Norman system; his successors im- proved them and let them become a space of local power inside the the Royal districts, the gi- ustizierati. At the same time some aristocratic families consolidated themselves, like the Ruffo of Calabria, lords of Sinopoli, who obtained the comital title in 1334. The paper analyses two important records: the cartulario 1 and the cartulario 17, integrating them with all the availa- ble documents. The cartulario 17 contains platea dating from 1335, which includes one or two older texts written in Greek and translated into Latin. It is at the same time an inventory and a municipal statute. The cartulario 17 is the main source for studying the creation, composition and ruling of the county of Sinopoli, not to mention the various world of the subjects to the lords, according to their status (vassallus) or their possessions as freemen (burgenses). We have also suffeudatarii and other people depending on the baron, like the raccomandati.

Abstract:
Title XII deals with EU competences in the fields of education, vocational training, youth, and sport. According to Article 6 TFEU, these four areas qualify among those where the EU has the power to ‘support, coordinate or supplement the actions of the Member States’, meaning that the EU’s role is limited to a secondary one and that harmonization of national laws and regulations is excluded. As we shall see, however, this has not prevented a significant amount of European integration taking place in these very areas that are often considered to belong to the core tasks of the nation state.

Abstract:
CHANGE AND NEGOTIATION AT THE SOURCE OF THE CONCEPT OF POWER OF THE SILESIAN PIASTS (12TH-13TH CENTURIES) The article analyzes the concept of power as a structure determining the shape of social relations in the Middle Ages. The study used findings in the field of social communication as determining the research perspective. In this context, an attempt was made to show the communication relations between the rulers and the ruled. The author also refers to the methodological reflection presented by Michael Werner and Bénédicte Zimmerman in the discussion on the histoire croisée. The main subject of the analysis is the moment of change in the communication of the image of power, as exemplified by the presentation of members of the Piast Dynasty in the 12th-13th centuries. This period saw the introduction of new ideological solutions. Three main points are discussed: first, the issue of the conditions enabling changes in the way power was described (political crisis?, cultural change?); second, the question of the permanence of the proposed changes; and third, determining the depth of the changes. The interpretation of the divine and social origins of power outlined in the first Polish chronical texts has been traced. The evolution of the idea of power was shown on the example of the Piasts in the 12th and 13th centuries, incl. describing the title they used. The end of the 13th century was considered a breakthrough moment in which the belief in the special role of Silesia as rooted in the past and legitimizing its place in the present-day space of power was established among the Silesian Piasts. The author’s reflections extend to Henryk the Bearded and Henryk Pious, given by titles to the system of power in Silesia.

In ASME/USCG 2010 2nd Workshop on Marine Technology and Standards. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/mts2010-0210.

Full text
Abstract:
Developed at the request of the US Department of Transportation, Section XII-Transport Tanks, of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code addresses rules for the construction and continued service of pressure vessels for the transportation of dangerous goods by road, air, rail, or water. The standard is intended to replace most of the vessel design rules and be referenced in the federal hazardous material regulations, Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). While the majority of the current rules focus on over-the-road transport, there are rules for portable tanks which can be used in marine applications for the transport of liquefied gases, and for ton tanks used for rail and barge shipping of chlorine and other compressed gases. Rules for non-cryogenic portable tanks are currently provided in Section VIII, Division 2, but will be moved into Section XII. These portable tank requirements should also replace the existing references to the outmoded 1989 edition of ASME Section VIII, Division 1 cited in Title 46 of the CFR. CIOMS Cumulative Glossary, with a focus on pharmacovigilance. Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS), September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.56759/ocef1297.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its inception, CIOMS has published numerous reports on pharmaco¬vigilance and related fields, and this CIOMS Cumulative Pharmacovigilance Glossary compiles all the definitions within these reports. Version 1.1 newly includes the terms and definitions from the report of CIOMS Working Group XI on Patient involvement in the development, regulation and safe use of medicines. Reflecting the fact that recent CIOMS Working Groups have been dealing with topics that extend beyond pharmacovigilance, the title of Version 2.0 has been adapted to read ‘CIOMS Cumulative glossary, with a focus on pharmacovigilance terms’. The CIOMS Glossary does not cover CIOMS reports on the subjects of ethics, clinical pharmacology, product development, the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA), or publications resulting from CIOMS Roundtable Discussions.
