Abstract:
With the 'Proceedings of the 1st virtual symposium on cosmic ray studies with neutron detectors' launches the new open access series 'Cosmic ray studies with neutron detectors'. The volume comprises the papers presented at the online meeting held in July 2020. The contributions show that neutron detectors on the ground provide significant results for studying the interaction of galactic cosmic rays with magnetic fields in the heliosphere, for accelerating energetic particles, and for a growing number of applications, including geophysics and space weather. The easily accessible databases around the project 'Real-Time database for high resolution Neutron Monitor measurements' (NMDB) make the original data readily available to a large user community.

Abstract:
Since space and time are the two fundamental modes of locating experience, the first chapter of the book considers their interaction. Specifically, the ways in which descriptions of space further the sense of the passing of time are explored. Space has been traditionally thought of as the opposite of time, and critics have suggested that spatial description in narrative actually stills time. In this chapter, it is suggested that the opposite is true; that, in fact, describing objects and settings contributes to the multilayered, multidirectional, complex view of temporality that narrative affords. The chapter includes analyses of Mann’s Tonio Kröger, Death in Venice, and The Magic Mountain, in comparison with Kafka’s short story Home-Coming.

Abstract:
Based on longitudinal ethnographic work on migration between the United States and Taiwan, this book interrogates how long-term immigrants negotiate their needs as they grow older and how transnational migration shapes later-life transitions. The author of the book develops the concept of a “temporalities of migration” to examine the interaction between space, place, and time. The book demonstrates how long-term settlement in the United States, coupled with changing homeland contexts, has inspired aging immigrants and returnees to rethink their sense of social belonging, remake intimate relations, and negotiate opportunities and constraints across borders. The interplay between migration and time shapes the ways aging migrant populations reassess and reconstruct relationships with their children, spouses, grandchildren, community members, and home, as well as host societies. Aging, the book argues, is a global issue and must be reconsidered in a cross-border environment.
