Abstract:
In cultural adaptation, the translator has a solid theoretical ground to stand upon; scholars have elaborated strategies that are helpful to this effect. However, there is little research, if any, to rely upon in the matter of temporal adaptation. The aim of this paper is to fill this gap. The primary data used in this translational study consists of an English source text that was published in 2008 and the resulting target text, translated to Swedish in 2012. Hence, in order for the target text to function in its time, there was a four-year long time gap to fill with accurate and relevant data and in a style that would not deviate from the author’s original intentions; the target text needed to be temporally adapted. In what follows, I will suggest a set of strategies for temporal adaptation. The model is elaborated with strategies for cultural adaptation as a starting point and based upon measures taken to relocate the target text to 2012. The suggested strategies are time bridging, updating, adjustment and omission. These four strategies make up the model that I put forward to bridge the theoretical gap that seems to prevail in the matter of temporal adaptation. However, considering that the data used in this study was relatively limited, the applicability of the strategies may be the scope of future studies.

Precision control of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) requires accurate knowledge of the dynamic characteristics of the vehicles. However, developing such models are time and resource intensive. The problem is further exacerbated by the sensitivity of the dynamic model to vehicle configuration. This is particularly true for hovering-class UUVs since sensor payloads are often mounted outside the vehicle body. Methods are investigated in this thesis to learn the dynamic model for such a hovering-class UUV in real time from motion and position measurements. Several system identification techniques, including gradient estimation, Bayesian estimation, neural network estimation, and recursive linear least square estimation, are employed to estimate equations of motion coefficients. Experimental values are obtained for the surge, sway, heave, and yaw degrees of freedom. Theoretical results are obtained for the roll and pitch degrees of freedom. The experimentally obtained model is then compared to the true vehicle behavior.

Existing wireless networks provide a wide variety of service capabilities. Due to the inherent nature of wireless transmissions, these services are often characterized by high error rates, variable bandwidths and delays, and unpredictable interruptions. Users and applications are somewhat adaptive in their ability to handle these variable service conditions. However applications are not completely flexible nor does the user perceived quality vary in uniform fashion with the changes in network service. By characterizing flexibility, network service variations and application behaviors can be correlated to improve the QoS provided. To this end, this thesis argues that two new concepts, adaptation paths and time constraints, are important. Adaptation paths specify the ways in which network services and traffic can or do change with time. Time constraints capture aspects of QoS requirements related to time. In particular, two time constraints are introduced. First, a Discernible Service Time (DST) captures the duration for which a level of service must or will be provided before it is changed. Second, Interrupt Time (IT) captures durations for which a particular service may be interrupted for whatever reason. To demonstrate the utility of theses constructs this thesis provides a number of examples for how these extensions can be employed in wireless networks to improve QoS.

Les simulations dépendant du temps sont toujours un challenge dans l'industrie, notamment à cause des problèmes posés par les géométries mobiles en termes de CPU et de précision. Cette thèse présente des contributions à certains aspects des simulations en géométrie mobile. Un algorithme de bouger de maillage fondé sur une déformation de maillage sur un grand pas de temps et des changements de connectivité (swaps) est étudié. Une méthode d'élasticité et une méthode d'interpolation directe sont comparées en 3D, démontrant l'efficacité de l'algorithme. Cet algorithme est couplé à un solver ALE, dont les schémas et l'implémentation en 3D sont décrits en détail. Une interpolation linéaire est utilisée pou traiter les swaps. Des cas de validation montrent que les swaps n'influent pas notablement sur la précision de la solution. Plusieurs examples complexes en 3D démontrent la puissance de cette approche, pour des mouvement imposés ou pour des problèmes d'Interaction Fluide-Structure. L'adaptation de maillage anisotrope a démontré son efficacité pour améliorer la précision des calculs stationnaires pour un coût raisonnable. On considère l'extension de ces méthodes aux problèmes instationnaires, en mettant à jour l'algorithme de point fixe précédent grâce à une ananlyse de l'erreur espace-temps fondée sur le modèle de maillage continu. Une parallélisation efficace permet de réaliser des simulations adaptatives instationnaires avec une précision inégalée. Cet algorithme est étendu au cas des géométries mobiles en corrigeant la métrique optimale instationnaire. Finalement, plusieurs exemples 3D de simulations adaptatives en géométries mobiles démontrent l'efficacité de l'approche
Time dependent simulations are still a challenge for industry, notably due to problems raised by moving boundaries, both in terms of CPU cost and accuracy. This thesis presents contributions to several aspects of simulations with moving meshes. A moving-mesh algorithm based on a large deformation time step and connectivity changes (swaps) is studied. An elasticity method and an Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation method are compared on many 3D examples, demonstrating the efficiency of the algorithm in handling large geometry displacement without remeshing. This algorithm is coupled with an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) solver, whose schemes and implementation in 3D are described in details. A linear interpolation scheme is used to handle swaps. Validation test cases showed that the use of swaps does not impact notably the accuracy of the solution, while several other complex 3D examples demonstrate the capabilities of the approach both with imposed motion and Fluid-Structure Interaction problems. Metric-based mesh adaptation has proved its efficiency in improving the accuracy of steady simulation at a reasonable cost. We consider the extension of these methods to unsteady problems, updating the previous fixed-point algorithm thanks to a new space-time error analysis based on the continuous mesh model. An efficient p-thread parallelization enables running 3D unsteady adaptative simulations with a new level of accuracy. This algorithm is extended to moving mesh problems, notably by correcting the optimal unsteady metric. Finally several 3D examples of adaptative moving mesh simulations are exhibited, that prove our concept by improving notably the accuracy of the solution for a reasonable time cost

Topicality of the problem. Wireless WAN technologies which can provide multimedia services to customer in most cases are implemented by the commercial providers of voice services. Thus technologies are expensive in development of the Hot-Spots, where volatile expanded concentration of customers may be observed. For such purposes the main alternative technologies are the IEEE 802.11. In modern telecommunications industry the expansion of the IEEE 802.11 networks is one of the fastest growing segment of the telecommunications market. This technology has quickly found a significant place and popularity to provide the typical services of Internet in business, home networking, and etc. Growing evolution of Internet technologies determines transmitted data flows to take a shape of specific real time multimedia flows features. For such conditions the IEEE 802.11 general technology was not adapted. It is important to develop the new operation methods based on IEEE 802.11 without changing main standard specification. This method lets to adopt an existing in market equipment of IEEE 802.11 for multimedia or voice flows. Plačiajuostės licencijuojamų dažnių bevielės technologijos, kurios paprastai skirtos vartotojams teikti komercines multimedijos ir balso paslaugas, yra per brangios vystant prieigos tinklus, kuriuose sutinkama didelė vartotojų koncentracija. Dėl to šios technologijos dažniausiai naudojamos tik komercinių balso paslaugų tiekėjų. Labiausiai tinkama alternatyva – yra IEEE 802.11 technologijos, kurių naudojimas modernių telekomunikacijų tinklų išplėtimui įvairiose tipinėse sąlygose yra pastebimai auganti telekomunikacijų rinkos dalis. Abstract:
This thesis studies the modelling for the non-linear and non-stationary systems. In a highly non-stationary environment, not only the model coefficients but also the model structure should be adapted with time. A number of novel on-line modeling approaches are proposed in this thesis. The proposed approaches are validated using several benchmark signal processing applications including time series prediction, noise cancellation and channel equalization. First, a novel tunable radial basis function network is proposed. in which the number of nodes (or the model size) of the network is fixed and a new structured node is used to replace the worst performing node whenever the current network does not fit the input data. Two schemes are proposed to optimize t.he structure of the new node: a powerful version based on the quantum particle swarm optimization algorithm and a fast version based on the "gradient search" approach. Secondly, a new online multiple modelling approach is proposed for nonstationary systems. The proposed multimodel approach is based on two level structures of linear sub-models. The advantage of the proposed method is that it is very fast, making it particularly suitable for real time applications. Finally a new adaptive channel equalizer is developed based on minimum biterror- rate. A key issue in the minimum bit-error-rate equalizer is how the probability density function of an associated signed decision variable can be estimated on-line. In the proposed equalizer, a novel online probability density function based on Gaussian mixture model is derived, which has significant better performance than existing approaches.

Abstract:
Adaptability is an intrinsic property of software systems that require adaptation to cope with dynamically changing environments. Achieving adaptability is challenging. Variability is a key solution as it enables a software system to change its behavior which corresponds to a specific need. The abstraction of variability is to manage variants, which are dynamic parts to be composed to the base system. Run-time variability realizes these variant compositions dynamically at run time to enable adaptation. Adaptation, relying on variants specified at build time, is called anticipated adaptation, which allows the system behavior to change with respect to a set of predefined execution environments. This implies the inability to solve practical problems in which the execution environment is not completely fixed and often unknown until run time. Enabling unanticipated adaptation, which allows variants to be dynamically added at run time, alleviates this inability, but it holds several implications yielding system instability such as inconsistency and run-time failures. Adaptation should be performed only when a system reaches a consistent state to avoid inconsistency. Inconsistency is an effect of adaptation happening when the system changes the state and behavior while a series of methods is still invoking. A software bug is another source of system instability. It often appears in a variant composition and is brought to the system during adaptation. The problem is even more critical for unanticipated adaptation as the system has no prior knowledge of the new variants. This dissertation aims to achieve anticipated and unanticipated adaptation. In achieving adaptation, the issues of inconsistency and software failures, which may happen as a consequence of run-time adaptation, are evidently addressed as well. Roles encapsulate dynamic behavior used to adapt players representing the base system, which is the rationale to select roles as the software system's variants. Based on the role concept, this dissertation presents three mechanisms to comprehensively address adaptation. First, a dynamic instance binding mechanism is proposed to loosely bind players and roles. Dynamic binding of roles enables anticipated and unanticipated adaptation. Second, an object-level tranquility mechanism is proposed to avoid inconsistency by allowing a player object to adapt only when its consistent state is reached. Last, a rollback recovery mechanism is proposed as a proactive mechanism to embrace and handle failures resulting from a defective composition of variants. A checkpoint of a system configuration is created before adaptation. If a specialized bug sensor detects a failure, the system rolls back to the most recent checkpoint. These mechanisms are integrated into a role-based runtime, called LyRT. LyRT was validated with three case studies to demonstrate the practical feasibility. This validation showed that LyRT is more advanced than the existing variability approaches with respect to adaptation due to its consistency control and failure handling. Besides, several benchmarks were set up to quantify the overhead of LyRT concerning the execution time of adaptation. The results revealed that the overhead introduced to achieve anticipated and unanticipated adaptation to be small enough for practical use in adaptive software systems. Thus, LyRT is suitable for adaptive software systems that frequently require the adaptation of large sets of objects.

Even though the e-learning is becoming increasingly popular in the academic environment, the quality of synchronous e-learning video is still substandard and significant work needs to be done to improve it. The improvements have to be brought about taking into considerations both: the network requirements and the psycho- physical aspects of the human visual system. One of the problems of the synchronous e-learning video is that the head-and-shoulder video of the instructor is mostly transmitted. This video presentation can be made more interesting by transmitting shots from different angles and zooms. Unfortunately, the transmission of such multi-shot videos will increase packet delay, jitter and other artifacts caused by frequent changes of the scenes. To some extent these problems may be reduced by controlled reduction of the quality of video so as to minimise uncontrolled corruption of the stream. Hence, there is a need for controlled streaming of a multi-shot e-learning video in response to the changing availability of the bandwidth, while utilising the available bandwidth to the maximum. The quality of transmitted video can be improved by removing the redundant background data and utilising the available bandwidth for sending high-resolution foreground information. While a number of schemes exist to identify and remove the background from the foreground, very few studies exist on the identification and separation of the two based on the understanding of the human visual system. Research has been carried out to define foreground and background in the context of e-learning video on the basis of human psychology. The results have been utilised to propose methods for improving the transmission of e-learning videos. In order to transmit the video sequence efficiently this research proposes the use of Feed- Forward Controllers that dynamically characterise the ongoing scene and adjust the streaming of video based on the availability of the bandwidth. In order to satisfy a number of receivers connected by varied bandwidth links in a heterogeneous environment, the use of Multi-Layer Feed-Forward Controller has been researched. This controller dynamically characterises the complexity (number of Macroblocks per frame) of the ongoing video sequence and combines it with the knowledge of availability of the bandwidth to various receivers to divide the video sequence into layers in an optimal way before transmitting it into network. The Single-layer Feed-Forward Controller inputs the complexity (Spatial Information and Temporal Information) of the on-going video sequence along with the availability of bandwidth to a receiver and adjusts the resolution and frame rate of individual scenes to transmit the sequence optimised to give the most acceptable perceptual quality within the bandwidth constraints. The performance of the Feed-Forward Controllers have been evaluated under simulated conditions and have been found to effectively regulate the streaming of real-time e-learning videos in order to provide perceptually improved video quality within the constraints of the available bandwidth.

Abstract:
When subjects are presented with distorted visual feedback of their hand during a goal-directed movement (i.e. subjects view a cursor representing their hand that is rotated from their hand’s actual position while reaching in a virtual reality environment), they typically adapt their movements so that the cursor is brought to the target, thus reducing reaching errors. In addition to motor adaptation, it has recently been shown that reaching with distorted visual feedback of the hand results in sensory changes, such that proprioceptive estimates of hand position are shifted in the direction of the visual feedback (Cressman and Henriques 2009). The current study looked to establish how quickly these sensory changes arise while training to reach with distorted visual feedback of the hand. Additionally, by comparing sensory to motor changes across time, we looked to determine the relationship between their underlying processes. Subjects trained to reach to a single visual target while seeing a cursor that was aligned with their actual hand position (50 trials: aligned reach training), or rotated 30° clockwise (CW) relative to their actual hand position (150 trials: rotated reach training). Reach errors and proprioceptive estimates of felt hand position were assessed following the aligned reach training trials and at 7 different times during the rotated reach training trials by having subjects reach to the target without visual feedback, and provide estimates of the position of their hand relative to a visual reference marker respectively. Results revealed a slow change in proprioceptive estimates over the course of reach training with the rotated cursor relative to estimates after the aligned reach training, and in fact, significant sensory changes were not observed until after 70 trials. In contrast, reach adaptation showed a much steeper increase and significant adaptation after a limited number of reach training trials with a rotated cursor. These different time courses suggest that proprioceptive recalibration and reach adaptation arise due to separate neural processes.

Abstract:
Aim: The aim of this work is to study the role that culture plays in business relationships between the Netherlands and Sweden. Further, the effects of time and trust on the business relationships are also investigated. The investigation entails whether there are cultural differences between the two countries and how those differences are managed. Method: The research is conducted by a qualitative approach with the use of primary and secondary data. The empirical study is conducted through semi-structured interviews participated by seven Dutch and six Swedish employees from an organization with business operation in the Netherlands and Sweden. Interviews involve one face-to-face meeting and all others are done through Skype due to time, location and cost constraint. Scientific theory is compared against the empirical findings and the coded themes are discussed in analysis. Results and conclusions: The national culture dimensions of Hofstede are compared with the empirical findings and this study supports that the four national culture dimensions of Hofstede’s; Power Distance, Individualism, Femininity and low and middle Uncertainty Avoidance correspond with the description of the Dutch and Swedish interviewees behavior. These national characteristics are observed to have influence in the cross cultural business relationship between the employees in the Netherlands and the employees in Sweden. The two largest cultural difference are in the way the Dutch communicate compared with the Swedes and the perception on pace of work. Although both parties work in different countries, they interact with each other frequently by phone, Skype and face to face meetings due to the fact that they share common customers. The common customers are managed through the local country operation such as Sweden and also at the headquarters level in the Netherlands. As such, the frequent communication results in the development of a working relationship between the Dutch and Swedish colleagues. The efforts to adapt to each other’s cultural differences further increases the trust level in each other's working method in order to serve their customers better. Suggestions for future research: The limitation of the research is that it focuses on one company which belongs to one specific industry. Therefore integrating participants from different companies within the same industry or across industries could result in a dissimilar result. The shortcoming is addressed by suggesting that for future research, this study should be replicated in different industries in the Netherlands and Sweden. Contribution of the thesis: This research contributes to the improvement of business relationships in multinational companies and managers can implement these improvements. The primary consequence of night shift work is a misalignment of the endogenous circadian pacemaker with the inverted sleep-wake cycle. This study evaluated the efficacy of a judicious schedule of light exposure on circadian adaptation to night work. Fifteen night shift workers (mean age +/-S.E.M.: 41.8 +/- 1.8 years) were studied for 3 weeks in their work environments under one of two experimental conditions. Treatment group participants underwent an intervention including bright light in the workplace, while control group participants were studied in their habitual light environments. The efficacy of the intervention was evaluated in the laboratory via constant routines. Following the intervention, treatment group subjects displayed a mean phase delay of (+/-S.E.M.) -9.32 +/- 1.06 hours and full entrainment to the night-oriented schedule while control group subjects displayed a phase delay -4.09 +/- 1.94 hours and a partial entrainment (F(1,30) = 11.33, p = 0.002). The results of this study suggest a means of alleviating the difficulties associated with night shift work with control of the overall pattern of light exposure.

La symétrie parfaite que nous expérimentons subjectivement en observant l'espace qui nous entoure est, dans une certaine mesure, une illusion. La cognition visuospatiale, comme indiqué par les tâches de bissection de lignes, est généralement biaisée à gauche chez les sujets sains et à droite suite à des lésions de l'hémisphère droit causant la Négligence Spatiale Unilatérale (NSU). Ces biais peuvent être modulés et l'adaptation prismatique (AP) a démontré sa capacité à réduire les symptômes de la NSU et à induire des comportements similaires à la NSU chez les individus sains. La question de savoir comment ce type d'adaptation sensorimotrice module la cognition spatiale est encore débattue. L'objectif de cette thèse était d'utiliser des approches comportementales et physiologiques, pour examiner les mécanismes sous-jacents des effets de l'AP sur la cognition visuospatiale d'individus sains. Dans une 1ère étude comportementale, nous avons observé la présence d'une dynamique temporelle des effets survenant après l'AP. Suite à ce premier résultat, nous avons testé sur une période de temps plus longue les effets faisant suite à l'AP déviant la vision vers la droite ou la gauche, et nous avons dévoilé, dans une 2ème étude, des dynamiques temporelles différentes en fonction de la direction de l'AP. Dans une 3ème étude, nous avons utilisé la stimulation magnétique transcrânienne pour étudier la physiologie sous-tendant la modulation visuospatiale efficacement induite par l'AP. Les résultats de cette thèse appellent à un raffinement des modèles actuels de l'action de l'AP sur la cognition visuospatiale
We are functionally and structurally asymmetric. The perfect symmetry we subjectively experience through vision of the space around us is, to some extent, an illusion. Visuospatial cognition, as indexed by performance on line bisection tasks, is generally biased leftward in healthy individuals and pathologically rightward after right brain damage causing unilateral spatial neglect (USN). These biases can be modulated and prism adaptation (PA) is capable of both alleviating USN symptoms and inducing a rightward shift (the so-called “neglect-like behavior”) in healthy individuals. How this type of sensorimotor adaptation modulates spatial cognition is still debated. The goal of this thesis was to use both behavioral and physiological approaches to investigate the underlying mechanisms of PA’s effects on visuospatial cognition in healthy individuals. In a first behavioral study we found the presence of a temporal dynamic in PA after-effects. Based on this first finding we tested, over a longer period of time the PA after-effects following both right and leftward PA and unveiled, with the second study, different temporal dynamics depending on PA direction. In a third study we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to investigate the physiology underlying the effective visuospatial modulation induced by PA. The results of this thesis call for a refinement of the current models of PA action on visuospatial cognition

Earth mean surface temperature has increased by 1 °C since the industrial revolution, and this has already had considerable effects on animal and plant species. Ecological responses to the warming climate – often facilitated via phenotypic plasticity – are ubiquitous. However, even though evolution can occur rapidly there are only few examples of genetic adaptation to climate change. In my thesis, I used a near-natural system to study if and how organisms have adapted to 30 years of warming, and how this has affected competitive species interactions. I investigated Baltic Sea populations of the aquatic snails Galba truncatula and Theodoxus fluviatilis, which had been subjected to cooling water discharge from power plants, resulting in water temperatures 4 to 10 °C higher than in the surrounding sea. G. truncatula had high upper thermal limits and large acclimation potential. This plasticity may have helped the species to survive under the new conditions, allowing evolution through natural selection to take place. I found that the populations of the two thermal origins had diverged in SNP markers associated with warmer temperature, whereas divergence in selectively neutral markers was mainly related to geographical distance. Adaptation occurred from standing genetic variation, emphasizing the importance of genetic diversity and population size in enabling the persistence of populations. Changes in thermal sensitivity of growth and survival were subtle yet significant, and complied with theoretical models of thermal adaptation in ectotherms. At the community level, pre-adaptation to warmer conditions aided the native T. fluviatilis when competing with the alien Potamopyrgus antipodarum. However, interspecific competition limited the snails most in those traits favored under warming, highlighting the challenge of adapting to different selecting forces during global change. The persistence of species and populations under climate change depends on several factors - plasticity allowing for initial survival, evolvability in allowing the genetic changes, and species interactions affecting the new ecological niches. The results of my thesis indicate that persistence under climate change is possible when these factors align, but the relative roles of ecology and plasticity may explain why there are so few observed instances of evolution in response to climate change.

D’autre part, les humanoïdes sont sous-actionnés dans le sens où la position et l’orientation ne sont pas directement contrôlées par un moteur. Ces deux aspects, le plus souvent étudiés séparément dans la littérature, sont envisagés ici dans un même cadre. En outre, la génération d’un mouvement complexe impliquant à la fois des tâches de manipulation et de locomotion, étudiée habituellement sous l’angle de la planification de mouvement, est abordée ici dans sa composante réactivité temps réel. En divisant le processus d’optimisation en deux étapes, un contrôleur basé sur la notion de pile de tâches permet l’adaptation temps réel des empreintes de pas planifiées dans la première étape. Un module de perception est également conçu pour créer une boucle fermée de perception-décision-action. Cette architecture combinant planification et réactivité est validée sur le robot HRP-2. This thesis focuses on realization of tasks with locomotion on humanoid robots. Thanks to their numerous degrees of freedom, humanoid robots possess a very high level of redundancy. On the other hand, humanoids are underactuated in the sense that the position and orientation of the base are not directly controlled by any motor. These two aspects, usually studied separately in manipulation and locomotion research, are unified in a same framework in this thesis and are resolved as one unique problem. Moreover, the generation of a complex movement involving both tasks and footsteps is also improved becomes reactive. By dividing the optimization process into appropriate stages and by feeding directly the intermediate result to a task-based controller, footsteps can be calculated and adapted in real-time to deal with changes in the environment. A perception module is also developed to build a closed perception-decision-action loop. This architecture combining motion planning and reactivity validated on the HRP-2 robot. Two classes of experiments are carried out. In one case the robot has to grasp an object far away at different height level. In the other, the robot has to step over an object on the floor. In both cases, the execution conditions are updated in real-time to deal with the dynamics of the environment: changes in position of the target to be caught or of the obstacle to be stepped over

Explicit and implicit processes play a role in visuomotor adaptation. (Bond & Taylor, 2015; Werner et al, 2015). The purpose of the current experiment was to investigate the potential contributions of explicit and implicit processes to visuomotor adaptation when awareness was manipulated directly and indirectly. To manipulate the degree of awareness directly, participants were assigned to a Strategy or No-Strategy group, in which they were made aware or remained unaware of the distortion respectively. They were then further subdivided into groups to train with a large (60°), medium (40°) or small (20°) visuomotor distortion, such that participants could become aware of the distortion indirectly with increasing sizes. All participants performed a reaching task to three targets with a cursor that was rotated clockwise relative to their hand by the assigned degrees, and then completed a series of no-cursor reaches without visual feedback to establish the contribution of explicit and implicit processes to visuomotor adaptation. Within the no-cursor reaching trials, the contribution of explicit and implicit processes to visuomotor adaptation were determined by having subjects reach (i) with any strategies they had gained during training (explicit + implicit processes), and (ii) as they did before training with the cursor rotation (implicit processes). Our results showed that the contribution of implicit processes to visuomotor adaptation was greater in the No-Strategy group compared to the Strategy group. Moreover, implicit processes took time to develop, and decayed following a 5-minute break. In contrast, the contribution of explicit processes was greatest in the Strategy group, and increased with rotation size in the No-Strategy group. Explicit contributions also remained consistent over Blocks, as well as when re-tested following a 5-minute break. Thus, the results of the current experiment indicate that there are notable differences in explicit and implicit contributions to visuomotor distortions depending on if, and how participants become aware of the perturbation. The results also highlight the importance of instructions when evaluating reaching performance in aftereffect trials, as they can modulate reaching errors observed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of gender, time since diagnosis, and the family environment on the psychosocial adaptation of cancer patients. This study was important because there is a deficit in the literature investigating the effects of the family environment on psychosocial adaptation in male and female cancer patients with diverse diagnoses. This study measured psychosocial adaptation by the patient's ability to adjust to cancer-related stressors in the areas of social relationships, involvement in health care, psychological well-being, household and work related duties, and family relationships. The family environment was measured by the patient's perceived level of cohesion, expressiveness, and conflict in the family.The study's sample consisted of 149 stage I or II cancer patients over the age of 50 with no prior cancer diagnosis, recurrence, or metastases. Participants completed a set of questionnaires, including the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale and the Family Relationship Index. The combination of gender, time since diagnosis, and the family environment, with demographic variables held constant, was significant and accounted for nearly one-third (27 %) of the variance in cancer patients' psychosocial adaptation. Results showed that the family environment is a significant predictor of psychosocial adaptation in cancer patients. Gender and time since diagnosis were not significantly related to psychosocial adaptation. Implications from this study are offered.

The increasing use of interactive multimedia applications over the Internet has created a problem of congestion. This is because a majority of these applications do not respond to congestion indicators. This leads to resource starvation for responsive flows, and ultimately excessive delay and losses for all flows therefore loss of quality. This results in unfair sharing of network resources and increasing the risk of network ‘congestion collapse’. Current Congestion Control Mechanisms such as ‘TCP-Friendly Rate Control’ (TFRC) have been able to achieve ‘fair-share’ of network resource when competing with responsive flows such as TCP, but TFRC’s method of congestion response (i.e. to reduce Packet Rate) is not ideally matched for interactive multimedia applications which maintain a fixed Frame Rate. This mismatch of the two rates (Packet Rate and Frame Rate) leads to buffering of frames at the Sender Buffer resulting in delay and loss, and an unacceptable reduction of quality or complete loss of service for the end-user. To address this issue, this thesis proposes a novel Congestion Control Mechanism which is referred to as ‘TCP-friendly rate control – Fine Grain Scalable’ (TFGS) for interactive multimedia applications. This new approach allows multimedia frames (data) to be sent as soon as they are generated, so that the multimedia frames can reach the destination as quickly as possible, in order to provide an isochronous interactive service. This is done by maintaining the Packet Rate of the Congestion Control Mechanism (CCM) at a level equivalent to the Frame Rate of the Multimedia Encoder.The response to congestion is to truncate the Packet Size, hence reducing the overall bitrate of the multimedia stream. This functionality of the Congestion Control Mechanism is referred to as Packet Size Truncation (PST), and takes advantage of adaptive multimedia encoding, such as Fine Grain Scalable (FGS), where the multimedia frame is encoded in order of significance, Most to Least Significant Bits. The Multimedia Adaptation Manager (MAM) truncates the multimedia frame to the size indicated by the Packet Size Truncation function of the CCM, accurately mapping user demand to available network resource. Additionally Fine Grain Scalable encoding can offer scalability at byte level granularity, providing a true match to available network resources. This approach has the benefits of achieving a ‘fair-share’ of network resource when competing with responsive flows (as similar to TFRC CCM), but it also provides an isochronous service which is of crucial benefit to real-time interactive services. Furthermore, results illustrate that an increased number of interactive multimedia flows (such as voice) can be carried over congested networks whilst maintaining a quality level equivalent to that of a standard landline telephone. This is because the loss and delay arising from the buffering of frames at the Sender Buffer is completely removed. Packets sent maintain a fixed inter-packet-gap-spacing (IPGS). This results in a majority of packets arriving at the receiving end at tight time intervals. Hence, this avoids the need of using large Playout (de-jitter) Buffer sizes and adaptive Playout Buffer configurations. As a result this reduces delay, improves interactivity and Quality of Experience (QoE) of the multimedia application.

Abstract:

Critical networks require defence in depth incorporating many different security technologies including intrusion detection. One important intrusion detection approach is called anomaly detection where normal (good) behaviour of users of the protected system is modelled, often using machine learning or data mining techniques. During detection new data is matched against the normality model, and deviations are marked as anomalies. Since no knowledge of attacks is needed to train the normality model, anomaly detection may detect previously unknown attacks.

In this thesis we present ADWICE (Anomaly Detection With fast Incremental Clustering) and evaluate it in IP networks. ADWICE has the following properties:

(i) Adaptation - Rather than making use of extensive periodic retraining sessions on stored off-line data to handle changes, ADWICE is fully incremental making very flexible on-line training of the model possible without destroying what is already learnt. When subsets of the model are not useful anymore, those clusters can be forgotten.

(ii) Performance - ADWICE is linear in the number of input data thereby heavily reducing training time compared to alternative clustering algorithms. Training time as well as detection time is further reduced by the use of an integrated search-index.

(iii) Scalability - Rather than keeping all data in memory, only compact cluster summaries are used. The linear time complexity also improves scalability of training.

We have implemented ADWICE and integrated the algorithm in a software agent. The agent is a part of the Safeguard agent architecture, developed to perform network monitoring, intrusion detection and correlation as well as recovery. We have also applied ADWICE to publicly available network data to compare our approach to related works with similar approaches. The evaluation resulted in a high detection rate at reasonable false positives rate.

The primary objective of this research was to develop and implement a new approach to on-line adaptive radiation therapy (ART) in which daily imaging, plan adaptation and radiation delivery are temporally integrated and performed concurrently. The advantages of this approach are: reduction of treatment time compared to conventional on-line ART; ability to perform a complete plan re-optimization with minimal extension of treatment time; ability to detect and correct for intra-fractional patient motion. This work was motivated by an initial study which compared four radiosurgery techniques. This study was the first quantitative analysis of the correlation between patient anatomy and the quality of treatment plans produced by different radiosurgery techniques. A number of different relationships, both qualitative and quantitative, were discovered between patient anatomy and dosimetric parameters for different techniques. The results were used to successfully predetermine the optimal radiosurgery technique based on patient anatomy. The first step in developing a new approach to on-line ART involved accelerating plan adaptation (re-optimization) using direct aperture optimization (DAO). A series of techniques for adapting the original treatment plan to correct for the deterioration of dose distribution quality caused by the anatomical deformations were investigated. Through modification of the DAO algorithm the optimization search space was reduced and the plan adaptation was significantly accelerated. Next, a new approach to on-line ART was proposed and investigated, in which accelerated plan adaptation and radiation delivery were integrated together and performed concurrently. A fundamental advantage of this approach is that most of the plan re-optimization was performed during radiation delivery, so the time spent adapting the original plan did not significantly increase the overall treatment time. Finally, daily imaging, accelerated plan adaptation and radiation delivery were all temporally integrated using an integrated Linac/Cone Beam CT system. Intra-fractional patient images were used to successfully re-optimize the original treatment plan in near real-time to account for anatomy deformations. This thesis concludes that integration of daily imaging, plan adaptation and radiation delivery for near real-time ART is both feasible and advantageous. With further advances in related technologies, it promises to become a part of clinical practice in the near future.

The weekly time course of adaptation of Heart rate variability (HRV) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) characteristics were examined over 4-weeks of intensive endurance training in 17 sedentary subjects (35.8 +/- 10.0 yrs). Five-minute ECG and breathing recordings were obtained at rest at spontaneous breathing (SP) and at paced breathing rates of SP+4 (M4) and SP-4 (P4) breaths/minute. Spectral power components of HRV were computed from the RR interval sequences; amplitude and phase of RSA were computed from the sinusoid fitted to the instantaneous heart rate within each breath. RSA sensitivity was obtained from the slope of the RSA amplitude versus breathing frequency relationship. Four weeks of training caused significantly increased in VO2max (37.3 +/- 4.4 versus 40.0 +/- 5.4 ml/kg/min; (p < 0.01); a significant decrease in DBP (p < 0.001); a slight decrease in SBP (p < 0.08), and max HR slightly decreased (P < 0.06). None of these variables were changed significantly in control subjects. No change in resting HR was found after training (74 +/- 14 versus 74 +/- 7 bpm). Pre versus post-training results in total and high frequency spectral powers (ms2) of HRV taken at SP were as was RSA amplitude. A significant reverse correlation was found between RSA-amplitude and breathing frequency (r = 0.40). Results suggest a trend towards an increased gain in the amplitude of RSA for varying breathing frequencies after training. In conclusion, four weeks of intensive endurance training may significantly increase maximal aerobic power and provide some health related benefit such as a decrease in diastolic pressure, without concurrent changes in resting heart rate or its modulation by cardiac vagal activity.

Robust estimation methods have been successfully applied to the problem of power system state estimation in a real-time environment. The Schweppe-type GM-estimator with the Huber psi-function (SHGM) has been fully installed in conjunction with a topology processor in the EEF utility, headquartered in Fribourg, Switzerland. Some basic concepts of maximum likelihood estimation and robust analysis are reviewed, and applied to the development of the SHGM-estimator. The algorithms used by the topology processor and state estimator are presented, and the superior performance of the SHGM-estimator over the classic weighted least squares estimator is demonstrated on the EEF network. The measurement configuration of the EEF network has been evaluated, and suggestions for its reinforcement have been proposed.

The Naval Ocean Research and Development Activity (NORDA) has adapted the Loral Instrumentation Advanced Decommutation system (ADS 100) as a portable maintenance system for one of its remotely deployable buoy systems. This particular buoy system sends up to 128 channels of amplified sensor data to a centralized A/D for formatting and storage on a high density digital recorder. The resulting tapes contain serial PCM data in a format consistent with IRIG Standard 106-87. Predictable and correctable perturbations exist within the data due to the quadrature multiplexed telemetry system. The ADS 100 corrects for the perturbations of the telemetry system and provides the user with diagnostic tools to examine the stored data stream and determine the operational status of the buoy system prior to deployment.

This essay examines the adaptation of The French Lieutenant’s Woman; proclaiming that it is based on the same core of meaning as the novel. This core, or interiority, of the art work, is the freedom which Sarah Woodruff presents. The interiority is immanent within the novel as well as the film. The freedom that Sarah presents creates gaps in time and is mainly freedom from time. From an exterior perspective though, these art works look different. The exteriority is visualized and described by being denominated as different narrative levels. In the film Mike falls in love with Sarah as an escape from his own time, one that is characterized by more lenient moral views than those prevalent in the Victorian Age. This present-day character is not, of course, in the novel but is invented by Harold Pinter as part of a metaphor for Fowles’ metafictional stance. In the novel, freedom is partly represented by an extradiegetic narrative level and suggested in various comments made by the apparent author of the work: John Fowles. This essay highlights the contrasts between the fictive world (on a hypodiegetic level), and the real world (on a diegetic level). By doing this, this essay suggests a motive for Pinter’s “narrative innovation” as a “brilliant metaphor” for Fowles´ novel. With these contrasts we find that the restraints of a seemingly open society (the 1980s in which Pinter was writing the screenplay) are able to contain an inner, rather implicit, restraint for the individual of the 1980s. The longing for freedom is triggered as soon as man is deprived of freedom, irrespective of how and when. Sarah is an escape from Victorian Age for Charles, at the same time as she is an escape from the 1980s for Mike. On the whole, Sarah is an escape from the linearity of all time. Freedom is immanent with both of the artworks, yet they are completely different, seen from outside.

In this thesis, we use the methods of statistical physics to provide quantitative insights into the behavior of biological systems. In the first half of the thesis, we use equilibrium statistical physics to develop a phenomenological model of how the hydrophobic effect impacts the structure of proteins, and in the second half, we study the phenomenon of adaptation and Darwinian selection from the standpoint of nonequilibrium statistical physics. It has been known for a long time that the hydrophobic effect plays a major role in driving protein folding. However, it has been challenging to translate this understanding into a predictive, quantitative theory of how the full pattern of sequence hydrophobicity in a protein helps to determine its structure. Here, we develop and apply a phenomenological theory of the sequence-structure relationship in globular protein domains. In an effort to optimize parameters for the model, we first analyze the patterns of backbone burial found in single-domain crystal structures and discover that classic hydrophobicity scales derived from bulk physicochemical properties of amino acids are already nearly optimal for prediction of burial using the model. Subsequently, we apply the model to studying structural fluctuations in proteins and establish a means of identifying ligand-binding and protein-protein interaction sites using this approach. In the second half of the thesis, we undertake to address the question of adaptation from the standpoint of physics. Building on past fundamental results in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, we demonstrate a generalization of the Helmholtz free energy for the finite-time stochastic evolution of driven Newtonian matter. By analyzing this expression, we show a general tendency in a broad class of driven many-particle systems toward self-organization into states formed through reliable absorption and dissipation of work energy from the surrounding environment. We demonstrate how this tendency plays out in the familiar example of Darwinian competition between two exponentially growing self-replicators. Subsequently, we illustrate the more general mechanism by which extra dissipation drives adaptation by analyzing the process of random hopping in driven energy landscapes.

The Division of Computer Engineering at Linköping's university is currently researching the possibility to create a highly parallel DSP platform, that can keep up with the computational needs of upcoming standards for various applications, at low cost and low power consumption. The architecture is called ePUMA and it combines a general RISC DSP master processor with eight SIMD co-processors on a single chip. The master processor will act as the main processor for general tasks and execution control, while the co-processors will accelerate computing intensive and parallel DSP kernels.This thesis investigates the performance potential of the co-processors by implementing matrix algebra kernels for QR decomposition, LU decomposition, matrix determinant and matrix inverse, that run on a single co-processor. The kernels will then be evaluated to find possible problems with the co-processors' microarchitecture and suggest solutions to the problems that might exist. The evaluation shows that the performance potential is very good, but a few problems have been identified, that causes significant overhead in the kernels. Pipeline mismatches, that occurs due to different pipeline lengths for different instructions, causes pipeline hazards and the current solution to this, doesn't allow effective use of the pipeline. In some cases, the single port memories will cause bottlenecks, but the thesis suggests that the situation could be greatly improved by using buffered memory write-back. Also, the lack of register forwarding makes kernels with many data dependencies run unnecessarily slow.

This descriptive correlational and longitudinal study was designed to assess the changes in cognitive appraisal of emotions and coping strategies which myocardial infarction (Ml) patients used at two points in time. Additionally, the variables of cognitive appraisal of emotions were investigated for their relationships to coping strategies. A convenience sample of 21 confirmed first MI patients was selected from coronary care units (CCU) of four hospitals in western Canada. Participants completed the Emotion Appraisal Scale, the Revised Ways of Coping checklist as well as an information sheet. Overall, the participants experienced a wide range of the four appraisal types of threat, harm, challenge and benefit. Challenge emotions were the most frequent appraisal type at both interviews. Initially-, benefit emotions were the least frequent appraisal type, while harm emotions were the least frequent at the second period. While results indicated changes, no significant changes were found in the four emotion appraisals of threat, harm, challenge and benefit over time. The complexity of emotions experienced reflects the multifacated nature of the MI situation influencing patients in early phases of recovery. The participants used a variety of coping strategies which are related to emotion-focused and problem-focused coping to manage the demands of their MI. Most of the participants used all eight available types of coping. The strategies of seeking social support, distancing and positive reappraisal were the most predominant types of coping at both interviews. The strategies of self-controlling, planful problem-solving and accepting responsibility were moderately used, while escape-avoidance and confrontive coping were the least used types of coping at both times. The findings suggest that coping with a cardiac event is a complex process. The MI crisis present the patients with multiple tasks which require a combination of coping strategies. At the initial period, a significant relationship was found between threat emotions and planful problem-solving coping. Harm emotions were significantly and positively correlated with accepting responsibility, planful problem-solving and confrontive coping. Similarly, challenge emotions correlated with seeking social support and positive reappraisal coping. Significant relationships were found between benefit emotions and two forms of coping: confrontive and seeking social support coping. At the second period, only two significant correlations were found: benefit emotions significantly correlated with self-controlling and accepting responsibility. The findings suggest that a heart attack is appraised as moderately stressful by first MI patients in early phases of recovery. The MI patients' perception or understanding of the contextual factors affect appraisal of harm, threat, benefit and challenge emotions which in turn influence the choice of coping strategies.

This essay explores the adaptation process in ​The Gap of Time ​by Jeanette Winterson, a novel basedon​TheWinter’sTaleb​yWilliamShakespeare.Itisadiscussionandanalysisofthe novel; put in contrast to the play, and an exploration of the different emerging elements and themes in ​The Gap of Time.​ The most prevalent themes in the novel are abandonment, the power of jealousy, and alienation leading to self-invention. By exploring the novel in light of adaptation theories this essay will illustrate how Winterson exposes these themes. A comparative reading of the play and the novel makes it possible to discover various points in the plot where the adaptation process contributes to a different perspective on some of the characters in the story. In addition, the author has a personal connection to abandonment and loss due to being adopted as a child. This may also influence the narrative in the novel. Whilst jealousy is primarily focused upon in the play, the novel uses abandonment as its driving force instead, which is what this essay is focusing on. This in turn leads to self-invention as a tool to cope with loss, as expressed in the novel. Arguably there are other perspectives arising from the major themes, such as alienation and to some extent faith, which is also mentioned in this essay. In conclusion, the divergence between the novel and the play is fundamentally seen in character development.
Denna uppsats har för avsikt att utforska adaptionsprocessen i “The Gap of Time” av Jeanette Winterson som är en adaption av “The Winter’s Tale” av William Shakespeare. Det är en diskussion och analys av romanen, i jämförelse med pjäsen, samt ett utforskande av tematiska inslag i “The Gap of Time”. De mest allmänt förekommande inslagen är exempelvis övergivenhet, hur svartsjuka påverkar oss, samt främlingskap och självuppfyllande. Genom att utforska romanen i ljuset av olika adaptionsteorier så har uppsatsen som syfte att genomlysa hur Winterson fångar dessa olika tematiska inslag i sitt narrativ. En komparativ läsning av romanen och pjäsen gör det möjligt att upptäcka olika vändpunkter i berättandet som gör att läsaren får ett annat perspektiv på de olika karaktärerna. Det skall tilläggas att författaren har en personlig referens till övergivenhet eftersom hon själv är adopterad. Detta kan ha påverkat berättandet i romanen. Det drivande tematiska inslaget i pjäsen är svartsjuka, men i romanen är övergivenhet det som står i centrum, vilket denna uppsats främst handlar om. Detta i sin tur leder till självuppfyllande som ett verktyg för att hantera en förlust eller övergivenhet, vilket framgår i romanen. Min tes är att det också växer fram andra perspektiv ur de tematiska inslagen, så som främlingskap och religiös övertygelse, vilket också nämns i denna uppsats. Slutsatsen är att den grundläggande avvikelsen mellan romanen och pjäsen främst ses i förändringsprocessen hos de olika karaktärerna i berättelsen.

The system's state observation is one of the most important problem in control theory, and it becomes extremely challenging when the system model is not entirely known. For linear systems the problem is solved by using Luenberger observer in a deterministic framework and by Kalman filter in a stochastic framework, while for nonlinear systems, the observation problem is still a research topic. The aim of this thesis is to give a framework, in which the adaptation problem, relative to the model unknowns, can be performed by system identification techniques. In particular, in this thesis we develop and implement adaptive observers design, that uses "universal approximator" to perform the adaptation problem. Moreover, we present simulations on the performance of the proposed observer.

Background: There currently exists a vast amount of literature concerning chronic illness self-management, however the developmental patterns and sustainability of self-management over time remain largely unknown. This paper aims to describe the patterns by which different chronic illness self-management behaviors develop and are maintained over time. Method: Twenty-one individuals newly diagnosed with chronic illnesses (e.g., diabetes, rheumatism, ischemic heart disease, multiple sclerosis, chronic renal disease, inflammatory bowel disease) were repeatedly interviewed over two-and-a-half years. The interviews were conducted in Sweden from 2006 to 2008. A total of 81 narrative interviews were analyzed with an interpretive description approach. Results: The participants’ self-management behaviors could be described in four different developmental patterns: consistent, episodic, on demand, and transitional. The developmental patterns were related to specific self-management behaviors. Most participants took long-term medications in a consistent pattern, whereas exercise was often performed according to an episodic pattern. Participants managed health crises (e.g., angina, pain episodes) according to an on demand pattern and everyday changes due to illness (e.g., adaptation of work and household activities) according to a transitional pattern. All of the participants used more than one self-management pattern. Conclusion: The findings show that self-management does not develop as one uniform pattern. Instead different self-management behaviors are enacted in different patterns. Therefore, it is likely that self-management activities require support strategies tailored to each behavior’s developmental pattern.

Over the last decade or more, chronic illness research has consistently found that the lineaer relationship between knowledge and behaviour or between behaviour change and improved health outcomes does not exist. Furthermore, the link between behaviour and health status is not as strong as the link between illness-specific efficacy belier and health status. Strategies to increase confidence in illness-specific behaviours have gradually assumed more importance in improving health outcomes. Strategies to improve behaviour-specific efficacy belief can assist individuals to change their behaviour by influencing behavioural choices, effort and persistence with task man demands. Concomitantly, it has been suggested that there is a positive relationship between efficacy belief and psychosocial functioning. It is unclear as to whether this empirical evidence also applies to chronic illness conditions with a complex self-care regimen. The degree to which a more general level of confidence, or efficacy belief, can also contribute to psychosocial functioning is unknown. The focus of this study was to examine the relative impact of general and illness-specific efficacy expectations on psychosocial adaptation to illness over nine months. The study measured illness-specific efficacy beliefs when it was expected that they were still developing.
The illness-specific beliefs were compared to the purportedly more stable general efficacy belief. This longitudinal study employed an exploratory predictive design to measure efficacy beliefs in the natural setting. Data were collected at entry to the study, at three and nine months Participants included adults from three chronic illness groups: Arthritis (n= = ), diabetes type 1 (n = 104) and type 2 (n = 122). The self-report questionnaires used collect the data were three illness-specific efficacy belief measures, general self-efficacy and the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale. The dependent variable of interest was psychosocial adaptation to illness. Multiple regression analysis provided evidence of between-group differences in the positive contribution of general and illness-specific efficacy beliefs to psychosocial adaptation for chronic illness groups with different regimen attributes. The variables best able to predict psychosocial adaptation to illness over time, after being adjusted for perceived level of stress and general self-efficacy (belief in abilities in general), were illness-specific efficacy beliefs. A general efficacy belief contributed to the illness adaptation process initially but its influence reduced as the influence of illness-specific beliefs increased. Repeated measures MANOVA confirmed the stability of general efficacy belief. The contribution of this study to current knowledge of self- -efficacy theory is its application to self-management programs for chronic illness groups. The findings suggest that the more stable general efficacy belief has a role in psychosocial adaptation to chronic illness during the period when illness-specific efficacy beliefs, targeted by self-management programs, are still developing.

Abstract The timing growth and reproduction are critical to the fitness of plants and animals. The timing also has an important role in local adaptation. Locally adapted plants may have different responses to photoperiod and other environmental cues and genes or alleles behind underlying differences may differ between populations. The molecular genetics and physiology of flowering of the plant molecular biology model organism Arabidopsis thaliana is being intensively studied, and this offers a good opportunity to study the genetic basis of flowering time variation in related non-model species. The closely related perennial species Arabidopsis lyrata provides an interesting comparison to A. thaliana because of its different ecology, mating system and life history. The influence of sampling designs on clustering methods was analyzed using simulations and microsatellite data in the selfing A. thaliana. It was found that sample size has a large effect on the resulting number of clusters and sampling too few individuals per locality could lead to a severe underestimation of the real number of subpopulations. Patterns of sequence variation in flowering time genes and association between polymorphisms at FRI (and FLC) and flowering time was studied in A. thaliana and in A. lyrata to find out whether the genes were responsible for flowering time differences between and within natural populations. In A. thaliana there was no significant association between polymorphisms at FLC and FRI and flowering time. In A. lyrata the FRI gene was polymorphic for an indel associated with flowering time variation within two Northern European populations, suggesting that the indel (or a linked polymorphism) was involved in flowering time variation. However, FRI did not explain the flowering time differences between A. lyrata populations, and other loci must be involved. Patterns of diversity and divergence at flowering time related loci were compared against a set of random reference loci to examine the roles of selection and demography. Sequence variation in the studied A. lyrata populations departed from the standard neutral equilibrium model and it has been influenced by recent historical events, most likely bottlenecks. The level of silent and synonymous polymorphisms in flowering time genes was highly reduced and this can be likely explained by selective sweeps at flowering time genes
Tiivistelmä Kasveilla kukkimisen ajoittaminen suotuisaan ajankohtaan on hyvin tärkeää suvullisen lisääntymisen kannalta. Kukkimisen oikealla ajoituksella on myös tärkeä rooli kasvien sopeutumisessa paikallisiin olosuhteisiin. Kukkimisaikamuunteluun vaikuttavat useimmiten lukuisat geenit sekä ympäristötekijät, jotka voivat vaihdella alueellisesti ja populaatioiden välillä. Vaikka kukkimiseen ja kukkimisaikaan vaikuttavia tekijöitä tunnetaan jo hyvin, luonnonpopulaatioiden muuntelun ja paikallisen sopeutumisen geneettinen tausta on huonommin tunnettu. Väitöstutkimus keskittyy Arabidopsis-populaatioiden paikalliseen sopeutumiseen tarkastelemalla kukkimisajan muuntelua ja siihen vaikuttavia geeneettisiä tekijöitä. Tutkimuksessa käytetyt geneettiset aineistot perustuvat osin neutraaleihin merkkigeeneihin (mikrosatelliittimuunteluun), ja osin sekvenssien nukleotidimuunteluun. Väitöstutkimuksessa on simulointien avulla selvitetty populaatiosta analysoitavien yksilöiden lukumäärän merkitystä populaatiorakenteen selvittämisessä itsesiittoisella lituruoholla (Arabidopsis thaliana). Tulosten mukaan on hyvä analysoida useampia yksilöitä paikallisista populaatioista, sillä liian pienet otoskoot voivat johtaa ryhmien määrän aliarvioimiseen. Koalesenssisimulaatiot osoittavat idänpitkäpalon (Arabidopsis lyrata) populaatioiden poikkeavan tasapainotilasta ja populaatioissa tapahtuneen populaatiokoon muutoksia (ns. pullonkaulailmiö). Tutkimuksessa havaittiin sekvenssimuuntelun olevan alhaisempaa kukkimisaikageeneissä kuin referenssigeeneissä todennäköisesti positiivisen valinnan vaikutuksesta. We optimize secret key rates (SKRs) of weak coherent pulse (WCP)-based quantum key distribution (QKD) over time-varying free-space optical channels affected by atmospheric turbulence. The random irradiance fluctuation due to scintillation degrades the SKR performance of WCP-based QKD, and to improve the SKR performance, we propose an adaptive scheme in which transmit power is changed in accordance with the channel state information. We first optimize BB84 and decoy state-based QKD protocols for different channel transmittances. We then present our adaptation method, to overcome scintillation effects, of changing the source intensity based on channel state predictions from a linear autoregressive model while ensuring the security against the eavesdropper. By simulation, we demonstrate that by making the source adaptive to the time-varying channel conditions, SKRs of WCP-based QKD can be improved up to over 20%.

In modern day communication systems, there is a constant demand for increase in transmission rates. This is however limited by the bandwidth limitation of the channel. Inter symbol interference (ISI) imposes a great threat to increasing data rates by degrading the signal quality. Equalizers are used at the receiver to compensate for the losses in the channel and thereby greatly mitigate ISI. Further, an adaptive equalizer is desired which can be used over a channel whose response is unknown or is time-varying. A low power equalizing solution in a moderately attenuated channel is an analog peaking filter which boosts the signal high frequency components. Such conventional continuous time linear equalizers (CTLE) provide a single degree of controllability over the high frequency boost. A more complex CTLE has been designed which has two degrees of freedom by controlling the high frequency boost as well as the range of frequencies over which the boost is applied. This extra degree of controllability over the equalizer response is desired to better adapt to the varying channel response and result in an equalized signal with a wider eye opening. A robust adaptation technique is necessary to tune the equalizer characteristics. Some of the commonly used techniques for adaptation of CTLEs are based on energy comparison criterion in the frequency domain. But the adaptation achieved using these techniques might not be optimal especially for an equalizer with two degrees of controllability. In such cases an eye opening monitor (EOM) could be used which evaluates the actual signal quality in time domain. The EOM gives an estimate on the signal quality by measuring the eye opening of the equalized signal in horizontal and vertical domain. In this thesis work a CTLE with two degrees of freedom with an EOM based adaptation system has been implemented.

Abstract Arabidopsis lyrata is a close outcrossing relative of Arabidopsis thaliana, the model organism of plant physiology and molecular biology. I studied variation in flowering time and the factors shaping the variation within and between A. lyrata populations in different environments. The role of the two important proximate factors determining flowering time, day length and temperature, were studied in climate chambers. The southern A. lyrata populations were found to flower in high frequency and quicker than northern A. lyrata populations in all studied environments, but the reaction of northern populations on long day length was found to be stronger than that of southern populations. Differences in vernalization requirement between A. lyrata populations were found in outdoor common garden, but in the climate chambers the results of vernalization experiments were not consistent. Strength and direction of selection on flowering time and other life history traits were studied in alpine and lowland A. lyrata populations in Scandinavia. Differences in selection were found both between populations and between years. Grazing sheep caused high levels of damage in inflorescences in the alpine population. In the lowland population there was less herbivory, caused by insects and hares. The difference in selection on flowering traits in the two study populations might be partly caused by selective grazing. Completely outcrossing mating system in A. lyrata is due to well developed self-incompatibility system. However, biparental inbreeding is likely to exist in natural populations and it may lead to spatial structuring of genetic variation within populations. I studied the effects of biparental inbreeding on components of fitness in A. lyrata in three different environments. I found inbreeding depression after sib-mating to be substantial. Stressful environment reduced the overall performance of the plants, but had no effect on the magnitude of inbreeding depression. A literature survey indicates that the observed levels of inbreeding depression in self-incompatible A. lyrata were higher than those of self-compatible species. This suggests that self-compatible species have purged some of their genetic load. The genetic basis of flowering time variation in A. lyrata can be further studied by using A. thaliana molecular tools.

Abstract:
The vision of automated driving demands a highly available system, especially in safety-critical functionalities. In automated driving when a driver is not binding to be a part of the control loop, the system needs to be operational even after failure of a critical component until driver regain the control of vehicle. In pursuit of such a fail-operational behavior, the developed design process with software redundancy in contrast to conventional dedicated backup requires the support of automatic configurator for scheduling relevant parameters to ensure real-time behavior of the system. Multiple implementation methods are introduced to provide an automatic service which also considers task criticality before assigning task to the processor. Also, a generic method is developed to generate adaptation plans automatically for an already monitoring and reconfiguration service to handle fault occurring environment.
