Abstract:
The Clenshaw–Curtis method in discretizing a Fredholm integral operator is applied to solving the confined time of arrival operator eigenvalue problem. The accuracy of the method is measured against the known analytic solutions for the noninteracting case, and its performance compared against the well-known Nystrom method. It is found that Clenshaw–Curtis's is superior to Nystrom's. In particular, Nystrom method yields at most five correct decimal places for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, while Clenshaw–Curtis yields eigenvalues correct to 16 decimal places and eigenfunctions up to 15 decimal places for the same number of quadrature points. Moreover, Clenshaw–Curtis's accuracy in the eigenvalues is uniform over a determinable range of the computed eigenvalues for a given number of quadrature abscissas. Clenshaw–Curtis is then applied to the harmonic oscillator confined time of arrival operator eigenvalue problem.

Abstract:
The stability of a dynamical system can be indicated by eigenvalues of its underlying mathematical model. However, eigenvalue analysis of a complicated system (e.g. the heart) may be extremely difficult because full models may be intractable or unavailable. We develop data-driven statistical techniques, which are independent of any underlying dynamical model, that use principal components and maximum-likelihood methods to estimate the dominant eigenvalues and their standard errors from the time series of one or a few measurable quantities, e.g. transmembrane voltages in cardiac experiments. The techniques are applied to predicting cardiac alternans that is characterized by an eigenvalue approaching −1. Cardiac alternans signals a vulnerability to ventricular fibrillation, the leading cause of death in the USA.

The paper deals with eigenvalues and normalized eigenfunctions for a Strum-Liouville eigenvalue problem. The technique we have used is based on applying a Adomian decomposition method (ADM) to our eigenvalue problems. Doing some simple mathematical operations on the method, we can obtain ith eigenvalues and eigenfunctions one at a time. The computed results agree well with those analytical results given in the literature.

Abstract:
In this paper, the regional eigenvalue-clustering robustness problem of linear discrete singular time-delay systems with structured (elemental) parameter uncertainties is investigated. Under the assumptions that the linear nominal discrete singular time-delay system is regular and causal, and has all its finite eigenvalues lying inside certain specified regions, two new sufficient conditions are proposed to preserve the assumed properties when the structured parameter uncertainties are added into the linear nominal discrete singular time-delay system. When all the finite eigenvalues are just required to locate inside the unit circle, the proposed criteria will become the stability robustness criteria. For the case of eigenvalue clustering in a specified circular region, one proposed sufficient condition is mathematically proved to be less conservative than those reported very recently in the literature. Another new sufficient condition is also proposed for guaranteeing that the linear discrete singular time-delay system with both structured (elemental) and unstructured (norm-bounded) parameter uncertainties holds the properties of regularity, causality, and eigenvalue clustering in a specified region. An example is given to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed sufficient conditions.

Abstract:
A vibrating pylon, modeled as a waveguide, with an attached point mass that is time-varying poses a numerically challenging problem regarding the most efficient way for eigenvalue extraction. The reason is three-fold, starting with a heavy mass attachment that modifies the original eigenvalue problem for the stand-alone pylon, plus the fact that the point attachment results in a Dirac delta function in the mixed-type boundary conditions, and finally the eigenvalue problem becomes time-dependent and must be solved for a sequence of time steps until the time interval of interests is covered. An additional complication is that the eigenvalues are now complex quantities. Following the formulation of the eigenvalue problem as a system of first-order, time-dependent matrix differential equations, two eigenvalue extraction methods are implemented and critically examined, namely the Laguerre and the QR algorithms. The aim of the analysis is to identify the most efficient technique for interpreting time signals registered at a given pylon as a means for detecting damage, a procedure which finds application in structural health monitoring of civil engineering infrastructure.

In this paper, the partial eigenvalue assignment problem of gyroscopic second-order systems with time delay is considered. We propose a multi-step method for solving this problem in which the undesired eigenvalues are moved to desired values and the remaining eigenvalues are required to remain unchanged. Using the matrix vectorization and Hadamard product, we transform this problem into a linear systems of lower order, and analysis the computational costs of our method. Numerical results exhibit the efficiency of our method.

Abstract:
Eigenvalue based spectrum sensing can make detection by catching correlation features in space and time domains, which can not only reduce the effect of noise uncertainty, but also achieve high detection probability. Hence, the eigenvalue based detection is always a hot topic in spectrum sensing area. However, most existing algorithms only consider part of eigenvalues rather than all the eigenvalues, which does not make full use of correlation of eigenvalues. Motivated by this, this paper focuses on multiantenna system and makes all the eigenvalues weighted for detection. Through the analysis of system model, we transfer the eigenvalue weighting issue to an optimal problem and derive the theoretical expression of detection threshold and probability of false alarm and obtain the close form expression of optimal solution. Finally, we propose new weighting schemes to give promotions of the detection performance. Simulations verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:
The controller design for linear time-invariant state space systems seems to be straightforward and well established. This is not true for static output feedback control, which is still a challenging task. This paper deals with controller design based on eigenvalue assignment. We consider the placement of distinct as well as multiple real eigenvalues or complex conjugate pairs. The desired eigenvalue configurations are characterised in terms of algebraic divisibility of the characteristic polynomial of the closed-loop system. We also consider the problem of partial eigenvalue placement, where not all eigenvalues are fixed by feedback. Degrees of freedom in the controller design are used for the minimization of various matrix norms of the feedback gain matrix.

Abstract:
The present work introduces a methodology to obtain a discrete time state space representation of an electrical network using the nodal [G] matrix of the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) solution. This is the first time the connection between the EMTP nodal analysis solution and a corresponding state-space formulation is presented. Compared to conventional state space solutions, the nodal EMTP solution is computationally much more efficient. Compared to the phasor solutions used in transient stability analysis, the proposed approach captures a much wider range of eigenvalues and system operating states. A fundamental advantage of extracting the system eigenvalues directly from the EMTP solution is the ability of the EMTP to follow the characteristics of nonlinearities. The system's trajectory can be accurately traced and the calculated eigenvalues and eigenvectors correctly represent the system's instantaneous dynamics. In addition, the algorithm can be used as a tool to identify network partitioning subsystems suitable for real-time hybrid power system simulator environments, including the implementation of multi-time scale solutions. The proposed technique can be implemented as an extension to any EMTP-based simulator. Within our UBC research group, it is aimed at extending the capabilities of our real-time PC-cluster Object Virtual Network Integrator (OVNI) simulator.

Abstract:
The eigenvalue moment method (EMM), developed by Handy and Bessis is examined from a Euclidean time reformulation. This alternative approach offers a more elegant and rigorous analysis than the conventional EMM theory. We will look at finite matrix analogues for the Euclidean time dependent problem H'F(x,t) = dt^x.t), analyzed from a moments problem perspective. This will enable the generation of converging upper and lower bounds to the "ground state" eigenvalue without the necessity of a discretization ansatz as is the case in conventional EMM theory.

Abstract:
[EN] One of the most important targets in nuclear safety analyses is the fast and accurate computation of the power evolution inside of the reactor core. The distribution of neutrons can be described by the neutron transport Boltzmann equation. The solution of this equation for realistic nuclear reactors is not straightforward, and therefore, numerical approximations must be considered. First, the thesis is focused on the attainment of the solution for several steady-state problems associated with neutron diffusion problem: the $\lambda$-modes, the $\gamma$-modes and the $\alpha$-modes problems. A high order finite element method is used for the spatial discretization. Several characteristics of each type of spectral problem are compared and analyzed on different reactors. Thereafter, several eigenvalue solvers and strategies are investigated to compute efficiently the algebraic eigenvalue problems obtained from the discretization. Most works devoted to solve the neutron diffusion equation are made for the approximation of two energy groups and without considering up-scattering. The main property of the proposed methodologies is that they depend on neither the reactor geometry, the type of eigenvalue problem nor the number of energy groups. After that, the solution of the steady-state simplified spherical harmonics equations is obtained. The implementation of these equations has two main differences with respect to the neutron diffusion. First, the spatial discretization is made at level of pin. Thus, different meshes are studied. Second, the number of energy groups is commonly bigger than two. Therefore, block strategies are developed to optimize the computation of the algebraic eigenvalue problems associated. Finally, an updated modal method is implemented to integrate the time-dependent neutron diffusion equation. Modal methods based on the expansion of the different spatial modes are presented and compared in several types of transients. Moreover, an adaptive time-step control is developed that avoids setting the time-step with a fixed value and it is adapted according to several error estimations.

Due to environmental concerns, there is a trend to be less dependent on fossil fuels. This is leading to an increased usage of distributed energy resources in power systems. For the control of distribution networks, an idea has recently been proposed, that shows promising features for several control problems in distribution. This research project demonstrates the adjacency algorithm, including the communication structure for implementing consensus where each agent exchanges information with its immediate neighbours. The adjacency algorithm is demonstrated for three applications; namely voltage control, frequency control using battery reserve energy and the implementation of market clearing for distribution prosumers.

Abstract:
The research work presented in this thesis concern to the stability analysis of linear time-delay systems with low-order controllers. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part of the thesis focus on the study of linear SISO (single-input/single-output) systems with input/output delays, where the feedback loop is closed with a controller of PID-type. Inspired by the geometrical approach developed by Gu et al. we propose an analytical method to find the stability regions of all stabilizing controllers of PID-type for the time-delay system. Based on this same approach, we propose an algorithm to calculate the degree of fragility of a given controller of PID- type (PI, PD and PID).The second part of the thesis focuses on the stability analysis of linear systems under an NCS (Networked System Control) based approach. More precisely, we first focus in the stabilization problem by taking into account the induced network delays and the effects induced by the sampling period. To carry out such an analysis we have adopted an eigenvalue perturbation-based approach. Finally, in the third part of the thesis we tackle certain problems concerning to the behavior of the zeros of a certain class of sampled-data SISO systems. More precisely, given a continuous-time system, we obtain the sampling intervals guaranteeing the invariance of the number of unstable zeros in each interval. To perform such an analysis, we adopt an eigenvalue perturbation-based approach.

Abstract:
Formulation of linear time invariant (LTI) models of a nonlinear system about a periodic equilibrium using the harmonic domain representation of LTI model states has been studied in the literature. This thesis presents an alternative method and a computationally efficient scheme for implementation of the developed method for extraction of linear time invariant (LTI) models from a helicopter nonlinear model in forward flight. The fidelity of the extracted LTI models is evaluated using response comparisons between the extracted LTI models and the nonlinear model in both time and frequency domains. Moreover, the fidelity of stability properties is studied through the eigenvalue and eigenvector comparisons between LTI and LTP models by making use of the Floquet Transition Matrix. For time domain evaluations, individual blade control (IBC) and On-Blade Control (OBC) inputs that have been tried in the literature for vibration and noise control studies are used. For frequency domain evaluations, frequency sweep inputs are used to obtain frequency responses of fixed system hub loads to a single blade IBC input. The evaluation results demonstrate the fidelity of the extracted LTI models, and thus, establish the validity of the LTI model extraction process for use in integrated flight and rotor control studies.

Abstract:
This chapter was originally presented to a mixed audience of physicists and mathematicians with some basic working knowledge of random matrix theory. The first part is devoted to the solution of the chiral Gaussian unitary ensemble in the presence of characteristic polynomials, using orthogonal polynomial techniques. This includes all eigenvalue density correlation functions, smallest eigenvalue distributions, and their microscopic limit at the origin. These quantities are relevant for the description of the Dirac operator spectrum in quantum chromodynamics with three colors in four Euclidean space-time dimensions. In the second part these two theories are related based on symmetries, and the random matrix approximation is explained. In the last part recent developments are covered, including the effect of finite chemical potential and finite space-time lattice spacing, and their corresponding orthogonal polynomials. This chapter also provides some open random matrix problems.

Abstract:
This paper uses Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) techniques to apply regional eigenvalue assignment constraints to a dynamic state-feedback controller design for discrete-time systems with vanishing nonlinear perturbations. The controller design also incorporates the H∞ performance criterion. The regional eigenvalue assignment place the eigenvalues of the linear part of the system in two distinct regions, one region for the controller eigenvalues and one region for the observer eigenvalues, in such a way that the state estimation error goes to zero significantly faster than the state reaches steady state.

Abstract:
Abstract The multiple scale method is applied to analyze bifurcations from a double zero eigenvalue of general multiparameter dynamical systems. Due to the coalescence of the eigenvalues, the Jacobian matrix at the bifurcation is nilpotent. This entails using time scales with fractional powers of the perturbation parameter. The reconstitution method is employed lo obtain a second-order o.d.e. in the unique unknown amplitude. It coincides with Bogdanova-Arnold’s normal form for the bifurcation equation. Referring to an example, the present approach and the classical center manifold plus normal form method are compared. Finally, the mechanical behavior of a non-conservative two d.o.f. system is studied.

Abstract:
In this paper, we consider the problem of feedback controller design via eigenvalue assignment for systems of linear delay differential equations (DDEs). Unlike ordinary differential equations (ODEs), DDEs have an infinite eigenspectrum and it is not feasible to assign all closed-loop eigenvalues. However, we can assign a critical subset of them using a solution to linear DDEs in terms of the matrix Lambert W function. The solution has an analytical form expressed in terms of the parameters of the DDE, and is similar to the state transition matrix in linear ODEs. Hence, one can extend controller design methods developed based upon the solution form of ODEs to systems of DDEs, including the design of feedback controllers via eigenvalue assignment. We present such an approach here, illustrate using some examples, and compare with other existing methods.

Abstract:
The eigenvalue problem plays a central role in the dynamic and buckling analyses of engineering structures. In practice, one is interested in only a few dozens of the eigenmodes of a system of thousands of degrees of freedom within a particular eigenvalue range. For linear symmetric eigenproblems, [K]{x} = λ[M]{x}, the eigensolutions are well behaved. The recommendations are subspace iteration or the Lanczos method working with [A] = [K-λ0 M]−1 where λ0 is the middle of the eigenvalue range of interest. Subspace iteration gets both eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Lanczos gives the approximate eigenvalues which can easily be improved by inverse iteration to obtain the eigenvectors as by-products. For real nonsymmetric or complex symmetric linear eigenprohlems and polynomial eigenproblems, the eigensolutions may be defective. All classical methods, including subspace iteration fail. We recommend to use the Lanczos method to obtain the approximate eigenvalues of interest and to improve them by a new variance of inverse iteration, one vector at a time, and to get the independent generalised vectors as hy-products. We develop solution method for the special case that the approximate eigenvalue is indeed exact rendering a set of singular linear equations which can not be solved by existing algorithms.

Abstract:
This article demonstrates the comparative possibility of constructing indicators of critical and crash phenomena in the volatile market of cryptocurrency and developed stock market. Then, combining the empirical cross-correlation matrix with the Random Matrix Theory, we mainly examine the statistical properties of cross-correlation coefficients, the evolution of the distribution of eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors in both markets using the daily returns of price time series. The result has indicated that the largest eigenvalue reflects a collective effect of the whole market, and is very sensitive to the crash phenomena. It has been shown that introduced the largest eigenvalue of the matrix of correlations can act like indicators-predictors of falls in both markets.

Abstract:
From positions, attained by modern theoretical physics in understanding of the universe bases, the methodological and philosophical analysis of fundamental physical concepts and their formal and informal connections with the real economic measuring is carried out. Procedures for heterogeneous economic time determination, normalized economic coordinates and economic mass are offered, based on the analysis of time series, the concept of economic Plank's constant has been proposed. The theory has been approved on the real economic dynamic's time series, related to the cryptocurrencies market, the achieved results are open for discussion. Then, combined the empirical cross-correlation matrix with the random matrix theory, we mainly examine the statistical properties of cross-correlation coefficient, the evolution of average correlation coefficient, the distribution of eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of the global cryptocurrency market using the daily returns of 15 cryptocurrencies price time series across the world from 2016 to 2018. The result indicated that the largest eigenvalue reflects a collective effect of the whole market, practically coincides with the dynamics of the mean value of the correlation coefficient and very sensitive to the crisis phenomena. It is shown that both the introduced economic mass and the largest eigenvalue of the matrix of correlations can serve as quantum indicator-predictors of crises in the market of cryptocurrencies.

Abstract:
Recently the statistical characterizations of financial markets based on physics concepts and methods attract considerable attentions. The correlation matrix formalism and concept of multifractality are used to study temporal aspects of the Ukraine Stock Market evolution. Random matrix theory (RMT) is carried out using daily returns of 431 stocks extracted from database time series of prices the First Stock Trade System index (www.kinto.com) for the ten-year period 1997-2006. We find that a majority of the eigenvalues of C fall within the RMT bounds for the eigenvalues of random correlation matrices. We test the eigenvalues of C within the RMT bound for universal properties of random matrices and find good agreement with the results for the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices—implying a large degree of randomness in the measured cross-correlation coefficients. Further, we find that the distribution of eigenvector components for the eigenvectors corresponding to the eigenvalues outside the RMT bound display systematic deviations from the RMT prediction. We analyze the components of the deviating eigenvectors and find that the largest eigenvalue corresponds to an influence common to all stocks. Our analysis of the remaining deviating eigenvectors shows distinct groups, whose identities correspond to conventionally identified business sectors. Comparison with the Mantegna minimum spanning trees method gives a satisfactory consent. The found out the pseudoeffects related to the artificial unchanging areas of price series come into question We used two possible procedures of analyzing multifractal properties of a time series. The first one uses the continuous wavelet transform and extracts scaling exponents from the wavelet transform amplitudes over all scales. The second method is the multifractal version of the detrended fluctuation analysis method (MF-DFA). The multifractality of a time series we analysed by means of the difference of values singularity stregth (or Holder exponent) ®max and ®min as a suitable way to characterise multifractality. Singularity spectrum calculated from daily returns using a sliding 250 day time window in discrete steps of 1. . . 10 days. We discovered that changes in the multifractal spectrum display distinctive pattern around significant “drawdowns”. Finally, we discuss applications to the construction of crushes precursors at the financial markets.
