Abstract:
The area of the Classical Karst is roughly defined by a triangle with Ljubljana, Trieste and Rijeka as its vertices. This is the area where the first scientific studies of karst phenomena were conducted. Two sub-regions that particularly attracted researchers are presented. Kras/Carso plateau with the Škocjan caves and the underground course of the Reka river. The groundwater flow of Reka-Timavo is characterised by high recharge variability of allogenic inflow of Reka River and flow restrictions in the upper part of subterranean flow, which control regional backfloodings observed in cave systems. The recharge area of Ljubljanica Springs is known for a cascading series of poljes in intermediate cave systems. The area has been in focus of hydrological studies for over a century, but many phenomena have been resolved in the last decade based on results of continuous autonomous monitoring in the last decade. Key words: Classical Karst, Kras, Škocjanske Jame, Reka-Timavo system, Ljubljanica Recharge Area, Polje. IZVLEČEK Območje Klasičnega krasa v grobem objema trikotnik z Ljubljano, Reko in Trstom v ogliščih.

Abstract:
The response of coastal systems to global acidification depends strongly on river inputs, which can alter the total alkalinity (AT) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in seawater. The northern Adriatic Sea (NAd) is a shallow continental shelf region that currently receives about 15% of the total freshwater input in the Mediterranean Sea, where the role of riverine discharges on the carbonate system has been poorly studied. In particular, river discharges can alter the carbonate system in the sea, affecting both the equilibrium chemistry and biological processes. For the main rivers flowing into the NAd (the Po, Adige, Brenta, Piave, Livenza, Tagliamento, Isonzo, Timavo and Rižana), data were collected for the pH, concentrations of the total alkalinity (AT), Ca2+ and Mg2+ and the isotopic ratio of stable carbon in the dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC). The DIC fluxes were estimated using the THINCARB (THermodynamic modeling of INOrganic CARBon) model for the compilation of the AT and pH data. The results show that the total transport of the AT in the rivers was 205 Gmol yr−1 while the transport of the DIC was 213 Gmol yr−1, of which about 70% was from the Po River. About 97% of the DIC in the river waters was in the form of bicarbonates. The high Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios indicate that dolomite weathering is predominant in the Adige, Piave, and Livenza river basins, while lower ratios in the Timavo and Rižana rivers indicate a greater proportion of calcite. The mean δ13C-DIC value was estimated to be −10.0 ± 1.7 ‰, a value nowadays considered typical for the DIC flux inputs in oceanic carbon cycle modeling. The DIC flux depends on the mineral weathering and biological activity in each river basin. However, these natural processes can be modified by anthropogenic disturbances that should be better quantified.

Abstract:
The study of the different hydrogeological compartments is a prerequisite for understanding and monitoring different fluxes, thereby evaluating the environmental changes in an ecosystem where anthropogenic disturbances are present in order to preserve the most vulnerable groundwaters from contamination and degradation. In many karst domains in the Mediterranean, areas groundwaters and surface waters are a single system, as a result of the features that facilitate the ingression of waters from surface to subsurface. This is also the case for the Classical Karst hydrostructure, which is a carbonate plateau that rises above the northern Adriatic Sea, shared between Italy and Slovenia. The main suppliers to the aquifer are the effective precipitations and the waters from three different rivers: Reka/Timavo, Soča/Isonzo and Vipava/Vipacco. Past and ongoing hydrogeological studies on the area have focused on the connections within the Classical Karst Region aquifer system through the analysis of water caves and springs hydrographs and chemographs. In this paper, the authors present new combined data from major ions, oxygen, hydrogen and strontium stable and radiogenic isotopes which have allowed a more complementary knowledge of the groundwater circulation, provenance and water-rock interactions. All the actions occurred in the framework of the European project HYDROKARST.

Abstract:
Interspecific interactions between surface and subterranean species may be a key determinant for species distributions. Until now, the existence of competition (including predation) between these groups has not been tested. To assess the coexistence and potential role of interspecific interactions between surface Gammarus fossarum and subterranean Niphargus timavi, and to determine their micro distributions, we conducted a series of field and laboratory observations. We aimed to determine: (1) species substrate preference, (2) whether the presence of G. fossarum influences the habitat choice of N. timavi, and (3) possible predation effects on micro habitat choice of small juveniles. Throughout a small river in SW Slovenia, N. timavi was predominantly found in leaf litter and gravel, but rarely in sand. In the sand however, we exclusively found juveniles. In contrast, surface G. fossarum sheltered mainly in leaf litter. A similar, body size dependent, micro distribution was observed in G. fossarum, where small individuals were generally found in gravel and sand. The presence of G. fossarum affected the micro distribution of juvenile, but not adult, N. timavi. In the laboratory we observed predation and cannibalism in both species. Niphargus timavi, however, appeared to be a more efficient predator than G. fossarum. In particular, juvenile N. timavi were most vulnerable to preying by adults of both species. This probably affected the distribution of juvenile N. timavi that chose finer substrates when placed with adult individuals in an aquarium with granules of different size. To understand the distribution of subterranean species, the summed effect of intraspecific interactions, as well as surface – subterranean species interactions, in particular between individuals of different size, should be taken into account.

Abstract:
2007/2008

Abstract:
2011/2012

Abstract:
--- The aim of the present research was to study the cellular architectural features of the thymus´ cervical and thoracic segments in alpaca fetuses (Lama pacos), and provide accurate information to the knowledge of this organ. For such purpose, 10 alpaca fetuses aged 41-188 days were collected, dissected and histologically analyzed. The most important results shown that the thymus´ anlage, at 40 days of age, had an acinar architectural morphology infiltrated by a few lymphoid cells and surrounded by mesenchymal cells. At 60 days of age, the anlage of cervical region appeared as a lymphoid “follicle” with a dense population of thymocites, whereas the thoracic region had a cystic appearance with short trabecular projections toward the anlage´s inner zone. At 100 days of fetal age, first differentiation between cortex and medulla was evident in the posterior cervical and thoracic segments, where the thymic parenchyma started to have well-defined trabecular projections, giving it an appearance of pseudolobullations. Also, at 130 days of age a little differentiation between the cortex and medulla in the anterior cervical segments was observed. At 165 days of fetal age, all the cervical and thoracical segments shown a well-defined lobular arrangement in the cortex and medulla. Thymic cap remained mainly as a double cellular layer of lax connective tissue. Subcapsular and trabecular blood vessels shown fenestrated endothelium. Erythroblastic cells in the peripheral subcapsular and cortical zones since 100 days were observed. Hema-thymic barrier started to be arranged since 60 days. Hassal´s medullar corpuscle at 100 days, as well as the epithelial reticular cellular barrier in the cortical-medullar zone since 130 days were seen. Key Words: Alpaca, fetus, thymus, thymocite, Hassal´s corpuscle.

Abstract: Thymus is the primary lymphoid organ responsible for differentiation of Tlymphocytes. This process is dependent of thymic microenvironment integrity and coordinated migration of hematopoietic precursors by chemokines and extracellular matrix elements. However, the literature shows that deep alterations in thymus microenvironment with modifications in thymocyte development may occur such as result of some pathological disorders. In this study we analyzed the atrophy induction and alterations in thymic microenvironment in three different models of thymus atrophy. We studied two models of infectious diseases, P.brasiliensis and P.berghei, and a metabolic disorder, alloxan induced diabetes. We have observed thymus atrophy in all models with different alterations levels in thymus microenvironment elements. Important molecules associated with intrathymic migration were been altered with significant modifications in extracellular matrix elements, chemokines and their specific receptors. Besides, ex vivo migration was altered in thymus atrophy induced by pathogenic agents, but no alterations were observed in diabetic mice suggesting that different pathological conditions studied, leads to singular alterations in thymus compartment. The modifications in thymic molecules observed in our models, suggest impaired thymus functionality and alterations in thymocyte migration patterns These alterations can lead T cell maturation imbalance with consequences in Tlymphocyte immune response.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract In many oil and gas provinces not only in Russia, but throughout the world, carbonate strata make up a significant portion of the sedimentary cover, and large accumulations of hydrocarbons are associated with them. However, the purposeful study of them as reservoirs for hydrocarbons in our country practically began only in the post-war years. In the special petrography laboratory carbonate rocks composing various stratigraphic complexes of almost all oil and gas provinces of the Soviet Union were studied, and in particular, Paleozoic carbonate strata of the Timan-Pechora province, Ural-Volga region, Belarus, Kazakhstan, ancient Riphean-Cambrian formations of Yakutia and relatively young strata of the Late Cretaceous of the northeastern Ciscaucasia. Carbonates are widespread sedimentary rocks. A very significant part of them was formed in the conditions of vast shallow-water marine epicontinental basins. A large number of works are devoted to the study of such deposits. However, issues related to the conditions of formation of carbonate sediments and their postsedimentary changes cannot be considered resolved, as well as the classification of the rocks themselves. The analyzed field is the Osvanyurskoye one. It was discovered in 2007. The field is located in the north-east of the European part of the Russian Federation, 2 km from Usinsk in the Komi Republic. The field is a part of the Timano-Pechora oil and gas province and it is a mature field (fig. 1). The objective was a 2.5m thick layer of the Serpukhov horizon.

de Caritat, Patrice, Brent McInnes, and Stephen Rowins. Towards a heavy mineral map of the Australian continent: a feasibility study. Geoscience Australia, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.11636/record.2020.031.

Full text
Abstract:
Heavy minerals (HMs) are minerals with a specific gravity greater than 2.9 g/cm3. They are commonly highly resistant to physical and chemical weathering, and therefore persist in sediments as lasting indicators of the (former) presence of the rocks they formed in. The presence/absence of certain HMs, their associations with other HMs, their concentration levels, and the geochemical patterns they form in maps or 3D models can be indicative of geological processes that contributed to their formation. Furthermore trace element and isotopic analyses of HMs have been used to vector to mineralisation or constrain timing of geological processes. The positive role of HMs in mineral exploration is well established in other countries, but comparatively little understood in Australia. Here we present the results of a pilot project that was designed to establish, test and assess a workflow to produce a HM map (or atlas of maps) and dataset for Australia. This would represent a critical step in the ability to detect anomalous HM patterns as it would establish the background HM characteristics (i.e., unrelated to mineralisation). Further the extremely rich dataset produced would be a valuable input into any future machine learning/big data-based prospectivity analysis. The pilot project consisted in selecting ten sites from the National Geochemical Survey of Australia (NGSA) and separating and analysing the HM contents from the 75-430 µm grain-size fraction of the top (0-10 cm depth) sediment samples. A workflow was established and tested based on the density separation of the HM-rich phase by combining a shake table and the use of dense liquids. The automated mineralogy quantification was performed on a TESCAN® Integrated Mineral Analyser (TIMA) that identified and mapped thousands of grains in a matter of minutes for each sample. The results indicated that: (1) the NGSA samples are appropriate for HM analysis; (2) over 40 HMs were effectively identified and quantified using TIMA automated quantitative mineralogy; (3) the resultant HMs’ mineralogy is consistent with the samples’ bulk geochemistry and regional geological setting; and (4) the HM makeup of the NGSA samples varied across the country, as shown by the mineral mounts and preliminary maps. Based on these observations, HM mapping of the continent using NGSA samples will likely result in coherent and interpretable geological patterns relating to bedrock lithology, metamorphic grade, degree of alteration and mineralisation. It could assist in geological investigations especially where outcrop is minimal, challenging to correctly attribute due to extensive weathering, or simply difficult to access. It is believed that a continental-scale HM atlas for Australia could assist in derisking mineral exploration and lead to investment, e.g., via tenement uptake, exploration, discovery and ultimately exploitation. As some HMs are hosts for technology critical elements such as rare earth elements, their systematic and internally consistent quantification and mapping could lead to resource discovery essential for a more sustainable, lower-carbon economy.
