Abstract:
Tim Winton is an Australian writer whose male characters often defy the traditional concept of masculinity. As for the notion of femininity, however, this kind of defiance is not displayed. In this essay, I study the presentation of the female protagonists in The Riders in order to illustrate this point, bearing in mind the Australian social and cultural context that surrounds them. Winton’s fictional women, no matter whether they are strong or weak, are normally depicted according to female archetypes. This leads to their negative portrayal as ambivalent beings, thus making them unreliable and even dangerous, as is the case of Jennifer and Irma. In contrast, Billie is a positive female character. She, who is also significantly a child, combines both feminine and masculine qualities. It is precisely this characteristic that enables her to be her father’s protector.

Abstract:
This article argues that in postcolonial and post-secular Australia, a country in which Christianity has been imported from Europe in the process of colonization in the eighteenth century by the British Empire, institutional Christianity is waning in influence. However, the article argues, Australian culture has a capacity for spiritual awareness provided it is expressed in language and idioms arising from the Australian context. R. S. Sugirtharajah’s concept of vernacular hermeneutics shows that a contemporary novel, The Shepherd’s Hut by Tim Winton, expresses Australian spirituality saturated with the images and values of the New Testament, but in a non-religious literary form.

Abstract:
Through a reading of Australian non-Indigenous author Tim Winton and his novel The Riders, this essay seeks to shake to the very roots white-settler understandings of identity and belonging. The essay treads respectfully into the field of Australian identity, recognizing that Indigenous people’s ancient and sacred relationship with country and the formation of treaties with the nation, are now rightfully central on national agendas. However, this essay asks the following question: what are the ontological grounds upon which respectful dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians might occur, after such violent and traumatic history? The essay explores the possible grounds for an evolving dialogue, one which will be necessarily intersectional: (post)colonial, spiritual/ontological and material. Further, the essay identifies “spirituality” and “ontology” as broad denominators for religion, speculating on a (post)colonial ontology which centers on home and (un)belonging. White-settler Australians, this essay argues, must confront deep ontological issues of brokenness if they are to take part meaningfully in future dialogues. Scully, the protagonist of The Riders, finds himself far from home and stripped of almost all the markers of his former identity: as Australian, as husband, and as a man in control of his life. The novel probes (un)belonging for this individual descendent of colonial Australia, as trauma engulfs him. Further, it will be argued that The Riders prefigures the wider, potentially positive aspects of a post-colonial ontology of (un)belonging, as white-settler Australians come to enunciate a broken history, and ontological instability. Such recognition, this essay argues, is a preliminary step towards a fuller post-colonial dialogue in Australia.

Abstract:
Industrial, residential and commercial noise levels are to be maintained for acoustic comfort living conditions. Sound annoyance is a sensation of discontentment linked with any driving force from machines or a circumstance. It is certain that, noise can harm human hearing capacity and brain neuron cells. Novelty of this study was the design of window air conditioner with modified heat exchanger coils with phase change material and water were used as refrigerants. Noise and vibration assessment of the constructal designed window air conditioner (CDWAC) and normal window air conditioner (NWAC) with the conventional vapor compression system was carried out. The noise levels, daily exposure noise level, noise criteria levels of the developed window air conditioner was found to be satisfactory according to the British Standard 4142 and noise at work regulations 1789. The noise criteria for the CDWAC with phase change material and water exhibited a better performance around 50 dB whereas the NWAC with vapor compression system was around 60 dB. For normal window AC the RMS value is about 0.62 and constructal window AC is about 0.38. peak amplitude was observed as 0.346 m/s2 in the CDWAC whereas it was about 0.512 m/s2 for NWAC compressor. The amplitude of vibration is very nominal in between 2 to 2.5 s in CDWAC and the peak variation is same as in 1.5 s. Results reveal that the noise and vibration performance of the construction designed window air conditioner was better than the NWAC. HIGHLIGHTS The design of constructal window air conditioner was an attempt to minimize one of the disorders or imperfections in the system that is the noise level created by the air conditioner during its operation Noise and vibration analysis of constructal designed window air conditioner was studied in comparison with the normal window air conditioner Vibration analysis was carried out through the experimental investigation Time domain analysis and spectral analysis of both the air conditioners were performed and the curves were plotted for better understanding of the performances of both the air conditioners in connection with vibration during operation In sum, it is found that constructal law based design of window air conditioner performs better than the normal window air conditioner GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

Abstract:
retinal image is a crucial window for the clinical observation of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, or other correlated diseases. Retinal vessel segmentation is of great benefit to the clinical diagnosis. Recently, the convolutional neural network (CNN) has become a dominant method in the retinal vessel segmentation field, especially the U-shaped CNN models. However, the conventional encoder in CNN is vulnerable to noisy interference, and the long-rang relationship in fundus images has not been fully utilized. In this paper, we propose a novel model called Transformer in M-Net (TiM-Net) based on M-Net, diverse attention mechanisms, and weighted side output layers to efficaciously perform retinal vessel segmentation. First, to alleviate the effects of noise, a dual-attention mechanism based on channel and spatial is designed. Then the self-attention mechanism in Transformer is introduced into skip connection to re-encode features and model the long-range relationship explicitly. Finally, a weighted SideOut layer is proposed for better utilization of the features from each side layer. Extensive experiments are conducted on three public data sets to show the effectiveness and robustness of our TiM-Net compared with the state-of-the-art baselines. Both quantitative and qualitative results prove its clinical practicality. Moreover, variants of TiM-Net also achieve competitive performance, demonstrating its scalability and generalization ability. The code of our model is available at https://github.com/ZX-ECJTU/TiM-Net.
