Baines Alarcos, M. Pilar. "She lures, she guides, she quits : Femile characters in Tim Winton's "The Riders"." Journal of English Studies 8 (May 29, 2010): 7. http://dx.doi.org/10.18172/jes.146.

Abstract:
Tim Winton is an Australian writer whose male characters often defy the traditional concept of masculinity. As for the notion of femininity, however, this kind of defiance is not displayed. In this essay, I study the presentation of the female protagonists in The Riders in order to illustrate this point, bearing in mind the Australian social and cultural context that surrounds them. Winton’s fictional women, no matter whether they are strong or weak, are normally depicted according to female archetypes. This leads to their negative portrayal as ambivalent beings, thus making them unreliable and even dangerous, as is the case of Jennifer and Irma. In contrast, Billie is a positive female character. She, who is also significantly a child, combines both feminine and masculine qualities. It is precisely this characteristic that enables her to be her father’s protector.

Abstract:
This article examines the character values contained in the children's story series "Little Abid Balita Cerdas & Saleh" by the Cordoba Kids Team. This children's story series consists of seven stories that tell the commendable behavior of a child named Abid. This character can be a role model for children, especially toddlers in planting character in a family. By using a qualitative descriptive method, the character values contained in this children's story can be found, in relation to their representation in everyday life. The approach used in this study is the objective approach proposed by Abrams. Through this approach, the character values contained in the seven series of children's stories will be seen through text structure analysis. Through the structure of the text, the character values of the characters can be revealed. These values include: divinity (religion), tolerance, honesty, compassion, generosity, respect for parents, courtesy, and cooperation. These character values are very important in the pillars of children's character formation. These character values are also a form of strengthening children's literacy in the family, especially at the age of toddlers.

Abstract:
Abstract Tim O’Brien’s Vietnam-based The Things They Carried has been criticized for exclusively depicting the painful and traumatic experiences of the American soldiers in the war zone. Despite the limited number of Vietnamese characters in the novel, and despite their relegation to the role of powerless and voiceless onlookers, their presence shows the degree of the power imbalance between Vietnam and America. This article demonstrates how O’Brien infused sentiments in his stories to emphasize his opposition to the war and his concern for the dignity of the Vietnamese people. O’Brien asserts that the main purpose of the United States’s invasion was to make Vietnam a learnable and controllable place. Through his critique of the United States’s imperial ambitions in Vietnam, O’Brien provides a representative voice for the people of Vietnam to share their sufferings from an unjust war.

Abstract:
AbstractIn general beginner-level cosplayer and common people think that in cosplay events, cosplayers pklay as fictional and non-fictional characters from America or Japan. However, a similar event charged this perception somewhat. In Hellofest, cosplayers not only play as characters from Japan or America, but also from Indoensia. In this event, one can find cosplayers posing as characters inspired from wayang talesOf Course, this changes the principal meaning of cosplay itself. Cosplay is the art of playacting, not unlike theatre, as in cosplay can be considered as a part of urban art. To popularize this urban event, the wayang character "Limbuk" was created. This serves not only as a critic for cosplay in general, but it also serves as a solution for cosplayers with rotund bodies who are concerned with their body shapes. It also helps preserve the wayang tradition in this globalization era, while introducing this female punakawan to the peopleUsing qualitative reserach method with the grounded theory and phenomenology approaches, as well as supported by several theories, such as the post-modern theory, the writers tried to conceptualize the cosplay of the awayang character " Limbuk" for theatrical shown in Jakarta.

"A Postdramatic Engagement with Robinsonade Motifs in Tim Crouch’s I, Caliban." Porównania 25 (December 15, 2019): 101–12. http://dx.doi.org/10.14746/por.2019.2.6.

Full text
Abstract:
Tim Crouch’s I, Caliban is a postdramatic adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest included in a collection titled I, Shakespeare in which he recreates Shakespeare’s most marginalised characters. The focus in this sequel adaptation is on Caliban who tries to survive after Prospero and all others have left the island. Different from the representation of Caliban in postcolonial reworkings of Shakespeare’s play, Caliban, in this work, is not preoccupied with taking revenge. Instead, he emphasises the need for social interaction as he has been left alone on his island. Drawing on former structural comparisons of The Tempest and Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe based on their common themes such as the island setting, master-servant relationship, colonial expansion, and power politics, the aim of this paper is to discuss Crouch’s adaptation as a transformation of common motifs of the Robinsonade in its attempt to respond to the ideologicalformations of Shakespeare’s text. Among such transformations, the concept of survival, for instance, is handled from the native’s viewpoint in Crouch’s work. Instead of the figure of the stranger who finds life on an unknown land difficult to cope with, this time, the native turns into a captive on the island though it is a familiar setting. Another motif used in an alternative manner is isolation, which is not presented as fuel for civilisation but as Caliban’s psychological trauma, which he explores through storytelling as a postdramatic element. Apart from the narration, the play demonstrates other uses of postdramatic elements to suggest an isolated figure on an uninhabited island like the use of objects such as toy boats and tape of sea sounds. Instead of seeing Crouch’s work as a postcolonial response to Shakespeare’s work, this paper will try to investigate how the use of island setting and the theme of isolation can make it closer to a Robinsonade. By this means, it will also try to ask whether an adaptation could also be read in relation to a work that is not intended as its source text.

Abstract:
Narrative is the primary aspect of literary work. The quality of work is represented by narrative. In prose and drama, they both involve story and characters to present events in narrative. The writer chose to analyze narrative functions because the writer wanted to examine the validity of Propp’s theory which considers character’s action as fundamental element of narrative structure. In this research, the writer aimed to find out the narrative functions by analyzing character’s action and to know how the functions are depicted in the movie of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. The reason of this movie is analyzed since Sleepy Hollow movie had never been analyzed by other researchers. In analysis, the writer used Vladimir Propp’s model since it emphasizes character’s action as fundamental element of narrative structure. This research used formal method which excludes discussions concern with the creator as the main subject of research. the result showed that Sleepy Hollow movie is constructed by 25 functions such as interdiction, violation, reconnaissance, delivery, complicity, villainy, lack, mediation, beginning counteraction, departure, the first function of the donor, the hero’s reaction, provision or receipt of a magical agent, guidance, struggle, initial misfortune or lack is liquidated, return, pursuit, rescue, unrecognized arrival, difficult task, exposure, transfiguration, punishment, and wedding.

Abstract:
Chromosomal substitution lines of wheat variety Timstein (Tim) into the genetic background of variety Chinese Spring (CS) were used to evaluate the chromosomal location of genes controlling carbon isotope discrimination (Δ), photosynthesis rate (PR), stomatal conductance (SC), and grain yield. The experiment was carried out in the field at Shahrekord University Research Station. Considerable variation was observed among the substitution lines and between the parents for all traits. Chinese Spring had smaller values for the characters under study than Timstein. Significant correlations were found for grain yield with PR (r = 0.556) and Δ (r = 0.619). The substitution line CS (Tim2B) was significantly different from CS for Δ (P < 0.01). The substitution of homeologous group 3 chromosomes produced significant differences from the recipient variety for PR. Substitution lines CS (Tim3A), CS (Tim3B), CS (Tim4B), and CS (Tim1D) were significantly different from CS for SC. Genomic comparisons indicated that genome B had higher values of all four characters compared with the A and D genomes. Homeologous effects of genomes were documented for Δ and PR only and not for SC and grain yield.

Not long ago, the actor and playwright Tim Robbins directed a production in New York and Los Angeles calledEmbedded. The play is strange, but nowhere more so than in one, infamous scene: a black mass in honor of the deceased political philosopher Leo Strauss, conducted by candlelight by advisers to President Bush in the run-up to the Iraq war. Characters who are transparent representations of Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz and Condoleezza Rice masturbate with abandon, all the while yelping “hail Leo Strauss!” beneath an outsized portrait of his face. The scene reaches a climax with this verbal ejaculation from “Woof” (Wolfowitz): “I'm hard! I'm rock hard!”

Abstract:
Tim Supple’s 2006 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been hailed by some critics as the successor of Peter Brook’s revolutionary 1970 version, a vision that changed perceptions of the play and became a classic in the history of its performance. Supple’s Midsummer uses about half of Shakespeare’s English text, with the rest translated into Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Sanskrit and Sinhala. It maintains the plot and characters intact, although it includes elements of local theatrical traditions in music, dance, martial arts and acrobatics. The production defies attempts at classification, since it presents features of “foreign” Shakespeare plays yet it braids the Indian-language dialogues into Shakespeare’s original English and extends the alienation effect of a foreign language production to audiences throughout the world. The international success of this production since it premiered in Britain as part of the 2006-07 Royal Shakespeare Company’s Complete Works Festival at Stratford is meaningful beyond considerations of aesthetic and theatrical value. The present paper discusses Tim Supple’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream within the contexts of foreign Shakespearean performance and intercultural theatre, and it analyses the contribution of the production to current debates about the importance of Shakespeare as international cultural capital.

Abstract:
This article looks at aspects of the genealogy of the prose poem. It does so by tracing correspondences, across a range of texts, in the ways by which characters and writers record themselves ‘profoundly sensible’ of an ‘awful parenthesis that had suspended them’, as De Quincey put it, in a place and in a moment of time. The experience of insulation, sequestration, and deep recesses, and then the looping together of ideas of suspension, trance, and syncope are witnessed at work in texts by Dickens, De Quincey, Baudelaire, Henry Mayhew, and Tim Dee, with patterns of influence or similarity discerned therein that are all suggestive of the prose poem's dynamics of containment and extension. Reference is made to representations of this involving both city and field, and to the poetic styles, including parallelism, that work to evoke encroaching and receding horizons.

Abstract:
The traditional hematinic oral powdered herbal drug (Haematol-B) from Ogbomoso, Nigeria had been characterized in terms of its botanical constituents, ascorbic acid and mineral elements composition, but there is inadequate information on the pharmacognostic properties of the ten herbal materials for its formulation. Therefore the objective of this study was to evaluatethe bark and wood anatomy (as appropriate) of seven of these herbs with a view to highlighting the diagnostic markers for their authentication. Following the conventional anatomical procedures of transverse sectioning (TS) and tissue maceration (TIM), a total of 21 characters were drawn from the barks (root or stem as appropriate) of the seven woody species studied, while 41 characteristics of the wood in the roots of three of the species were compiled using TS, transverse longitudinal sectioning (TLS), radial longitudinal sectioning (RLS) and TIM techniques. Staining, mounting and microscopic examinations followed, and the observed features were taxonomically described in accordance with the provisions of International Association of Wood Anatomists. Their diagnostic values among the medicinal herbs studied were also explored. The bark anatomical features that can be used to diagnose the species studied were those of the secondary cortex, phloem rays, axial parenchyma, sclereids and resin ducts. The wood anatomical markers included features of the vessels in the TS and variable ray characteristics in the TLS. The two artificial keys constructed from discontinuities in qualitative and quantitative anatomical features of the barks and the wood are useful tools for avoiding misidentification of the herbal materials studied.

Abstract:
Disney stories and characters have delighted international audiences for nearly nine decades, but as The Walt Disney Company has sought to reach new markets in the twenty-first century, Disney's live theatrical productions have served a unique and powerful ambassadorial function in which body and representation play vital roles. In 1997, Julie Taymor's production of The Lion King, which is inspired by several cultural traditions, opened on Broadway to critical and popular acclaim. The musical has since been translated into six languages and has played in over a dozen productions around the world. While the characters are animals, The Lion King is a human fable, and Taymor was determined that audiences see the fictional animals and real, live humans at the same time–what she termed the “double event.” With her unique vision as a guide, she enlisted an international creative team: film co-director Roger Allers and co-writer Irene Mecchi as book writers, Rhodesia-born Brit Richard Hudson as set designer, Michael Curry as puppet co-designer, Garth Fagan as choreographer, and a handful of diverse composers and lyricists to create the score–Elton John and Tim Rice, Lebo M, Hans Zimmer, Mark Mancina, and Taymor herself.Despite consciously postmodern, internationalist, and postcolonial aims–which have earned both economic and political rewards–the creative process, product, and reception have not arrived without challenges, complications, and criticism. This paper examines how The Lion King attempts to harness animal, racial, theatrical, and commercial power for diverse audiences in a global age.

Abstract:
AbstractSince the late 1980 s, poets from the US and, to a lesser extent, the UK have increasingly featured superheroes in their work, mostly appropriating iconic figures along the lines of Batman or Superman and exploring some aspect of their personality (e. g., Batman’s relationship to Robin, Superman’s loneliness) in dramatic monologues. The prevailing if not sole account of this phenomenon argues that these characters provide a shared mythology to a generation of writers to whom biblical and classical references are no longer readily available. It also ties the superheroes’ provenance exclusively to the medium of comics. This latter point, in particular, is open to debate, insofar as since the late 1980 s, superheroes are, more than ever, part of media franchises that treat comic books as but one among many outlets. The present article hence views the superheroes in poetry not so much as an appropriation of comic book but of transmedia characters. Simon Armitage’s seminal poem “Kid” (1992), for instance – a diatribe by Robin directed at Batman’s dismissal of him – resonates as much with the 1960 s TV series or Tim Burton’s Batman films (1989, 1992) as with the dark knight’s reinvention at the hands of comic book writers such as Frank Miller or Alan Moore. At the same time, the article aims to locate the place of the seemingly insular genre of poetry within a “convergence culture” that disseminates superheroes in the media ecology. Evidently, the “superhero poems” are not licensed creations that partake in officially sanctioned transmedia networks. Neither, however, are they a product of fandom and participatory culture. Instead, I would suggest that poetry here tentatively engages with the media culture that has factored into its marginalization during the past decades.

The paper focuses on the powerful interrogation of the audience’s agency as staged in two very different works that, despite their distance in terms of genre and cultural milieu, both call into question essentially normative notions of gender and nation: Between the Acts (1941) by Virginia Woolf and England (2007) by Tim Crouch. In Woolf’s last novel, the process of writing and reading ambiguously frames the fragmentary staging of an eccentric village pageant on Englishness and its literary heritage. Indeed, the equivocal mise en scène of characters as readers/actors/spectators in the crucial ‘interval’ between the two world wars lends itself well to an inter-disciplinary investigation of the critical predicament underlying those slippery and delusive participatory claims. Crouch’s acclaimed piece England is instead strategically positioned at the intersection of multiple ‘ways of seeing’ and multiple ‘ways of doing things with words’ by conflating the ‘site specifics’ of visual arts with the ‘empty space’ of theatrical experience. As such it urges the audience to ‘see’ the dubious ties between local, ‘g/local’, and globalised spaces and thus to face the invisible national, sexual and socio-normative ‘scripts’ that condition their responses at large.

Abstract:
AbstractWith its combination of gestures and music, instrumental sections, a narrator who occupies most of the composition, and two characters who sing for very short sections while acting and dancing for the rest of the piece, Monteverdi’s Combattimento defies genre definition. Starting from Tim Carter’s reading of the composition as a salon entertainment and responding to Suzanne Cusick’s call for the untangling of Combattimento’s multiplicity of meanings, this article investigates Combattimento in its ritualisation and performance of mutually defining relations that are mediated by the social and ideological implications of its immediate performance space, the salon – or portego, in Venetian dialect – the main entertainment hall of Venetian palaces. Using this as a key framework, the article explores the Combattimento’s associations with Venice itself as the broader performance space. Within that context, the choice of a particular episode from Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata for Monteverdi’s composition – with its mixture of love and violence, assimilation and confrontation, personal identity and agency, history of winners and history of victims1 – proves as crucial to seventeenth-century Venice, at the crossroads between Western and Islamic civilisations, as it does for today’s culture.

Abstract:
Abstract Readers may infer that literary characters are sympathetic or unsympathetic based on the perceived phonetics of character names. Drawing on brand name literature in marketing, we investigate whether Slovene and English speakers can identify sympathetic and unsympathetic characters in Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist based solely on their names, despite being unfamiliar with the novel. Both Slovene and English speakers can make this distinction, suggesting that sound symbolism may help communicate Dickens’s intended characterizations. Dickens’s documented focus on creating meaningful names suggests the sound symbolism in his characters’ names is likely intentional. These findings are relevant to the translating convention of preserving proper names, which leaves spelling intact (given similar alphabets). Preserving the original names in translation may be justified for readers fluent enough to perceive the original name sounds. However, not altering character names in translation may sometimes lead to different phonetic perceptions, which alter the sound symbolic meaning.

Abstract:
AbstractThis essay takes as its starting-point the post-2016 Refugee Crisis, which it considers to have been caused not so much by unmanageable migration as by excessive border control. It then uses Julia Kristeva’s figures of the ‘abject’ and ‘deject’ and Tim Ingold’s related conceptions of ‘containment’ and ‘exposure’ to explore some ways in which borders shape conceptions of nationhood and of identity. It goes on to explore Vicky Featherstone’s production of Zinnie Harris’ How to Hold Your Breath (Royal Court, 2015) and the Isango Ensemble’s A Man of Good Hope (Young Vic, 2016) as examples of representations of migrants and migration from a position of settled, white privilege. It then takes up the challenge of the chorus in A Man of Good Hope to ‘tell the other stories’ of the nationless, which it does partly by tracing the trajectories of easily-overlooked characters in A Man of Good Hope and then in dialogue with Zodwa Nyoni’s play Nine Lives (Leeds Studio, 2014). It finds in Nyoni’s play ways in which bounded conceptions of identity can be productively troubled by the figure of the migrant and identity thereby reframed not as the experience of containment within borders, but as a consequence of movement across them.

Abstract:
The gamma irradiation can promote the agronomic characters of plant. This study aims to obtain putative mutant genotype of the 3rd generation Samosir local shallot (M1V3), which highly yields. The study used the augmented design in which 8 mutant genotypes of Samosir local shallot from the 2nd generation after gamma (γ)-ray treatment were planted along with untreated. The differences between the irradiation plants and untreated were tested by t-test: Similarity distance and dendrogram were analyzed using the hierarchical cluster. The results showed that almost all the mean values made by all quantitative agronomic character changes in the M1V3 populations were higher than those made in M1V2. The expected high heritability value with a broad coefficient of genetic diversity was found in the character of fresh and dried bulb’s weight resulted from genotype populations treated with γ rays irradiation with doses 3, 4 and 5 Gy. High heritability values were also found in the fresh weight and dry weight of bulb in genotype populations treated with doses 1 and 2 Gy with moderate genetic diversity coefficients. Selection based on the dried bulb’s weight from each mutant genotype population with a selection intensity of 30 % was obtained 39 genotypes that showed the highest selection index. The highest number of genotypes were selected from the application of γ-rays with a dose of 1 to 2 Gy, each of 10 genotypes. Therefore, application at the dose of 1 - 2 Gy in M1V3-generation for Samosir local shallot can still improve the yielding character through breeding to archive shallot in national. HIGHLIGHTS The low doses (1 to 5 Gy) of gamma rays increased the growth and yield of shallots in the third generation The dose at 2 Gy of gamma ray resulted in the highest plant length, number of tillers, number of bulbs, fresh- and dry weight of bulbs in mutant M1V3 of Samosir local shallot The results found that 38 of 39 shallot mutants had greater characters compared to the control The application of 1 - 2 Gy gamma rays on local shallots in the third generation can be used as an effort to increase the yield character GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

Abstract:
Abstract In the Anglophone sphere, according to popular and most academic understandings, the term “ideograph” is regarded as an unproblematic synonym of 漢字 hànzì ‘Chinese character.’ On graphological grounds, i.e. as applied to writing systems, it can easily be shown that the concept of “ideograph” is both theoretically incoherent and practically unfeasible (McDonald 2016); while historically it is clear that the notion was founded on an imperfect understanding of Chinese characters as a writing system, and grew out of a European obsession with the notion of a “universal character” at a particular historical moment (Mungello 1985; Saussy 2001). Nevertheless the concept has become deeply embedded in European understandings of Chinese language and culture, to the extent that it is, in effect, a valuable conceptual possession of Western modernity (Bush 2010), and promoted alike by those with a detailed knowledge of Chinese writing, such as H. G. Creel (1936), as by those in blissful ignorance of it, like Jacques Derrida (1967/1976). In the Sinophone sphere, while for most practical purposes, as well as in a large proportion of scholarly work, more grounded understandings of Chinese characters as a writing system operate either implicitly or explicitly, the traditional emphasis on characters as a link between civilization and the cosmos (O’Neill 2013), as well as a long tradition of pedagogical “just so stories” about the construction of individual characters (e.g., Zuo 2005), provide a key point of contact with Western notions of the “ideograph” as symbolizing not a word, but an idea or an object. The situation may thus be described involving a type of inversion of the phenomenon of faux amis or “false friends,” where two different words are understood as being more or less synonymous; or alternatively as an example of Lydia Liu’s (2004) notion of a cross-lingual “supersign” where two comparable terms exercise an influence on each other across linguistic and cultural boundaries. This article will attempt to trace the genealogy of these complex and overlapping notions, and see what differing understandings of Chinese characters have to tell us about notions of cultural specificity, cultural production, and cross-cultural (mis-)communication in the contemporary globalized world.

Sharing the sources of Southeast Asian folklore and folk literature, magical fairy tales of Vietnam and Laos have many similarities in a motif of building orphan characters. Applying structural theory in fairy tales with immutability and changes, the structure of the story is described by a series of events “signs help to make a schematic comparison of the structure of various tales,” (Propp, 1968, p.25) the article studies the magical fairy tale Tam and Cam of Vietnam and the Golden Turtle of Laos to see the similarities and differences in the motif of building orphan characters. The similarities in the motif of building orphan characters such as: story structure, character system, incarnation motif, unique object motif, magical force motif show the common cultural space of the region. However, the difference in the situation of the story and the use of magical forces and elements in the story show the customs, belief characteristics, artistic tastes and cultural identity of each nation.

Abstract:
The experiment was carried out to study the effect of irrigation and weeding regime on growth, yield and yield contributing characters of lentil. The experiment was laid out in a split-split plot design with three replications. Four levels of irrigation viz. control or no irrigation (I0), one irrigation (I1), two irrigation (I2) and three irrigations (I3) and three weeding regime viz. control weeding (W0), one weeding (W1) and two weedings (W2) were used. Irrigation had significant effect on all the growth, yield and yield contributing characters. The highest TDM , CGR and all the yield contributing characters like plant height, number of branches plant-1, number of pods plant-1, number of effective pods plant-1, number of seeds plant-1, number of filled seeds plant-1, 1000-seed weight and stover yield were obtained from three irrigations (I3) and consequently it produced the highest seed yield. Effect of weeding regime was significant in respect of on the growth, yield and yield contributing characters. All the yield contributing characters except non-effective pods plant-1 were found the best when two weedings were done and as a result it produced the highest seed yield. With some exception two weedings showed highest values of TDM, CGR and other growth character. Finally the results suggest that three irrigations with two weedings are better practices to get higher growth and yield of lentil.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jesnr.v7i2.22225 J. Environ. Abstract:
Girls enter school more mathematics ready than boys. By the time they graduate from high school, however, females have been outdistanced by males in the number of higher-level mathematics courses taken and in the results of crucial tests, such as the mathematics portion of the Scholastic Achievement Test (American Association of University Women 1991). They are also much less likely to pursue majors and careers that relate to mathematics.

Abstract:
Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 (CZ) nanorods are successfully synthesized by glycol-assisted hydrothermal method using zirconium oxychloride, cerium nitrate and urea, with the presence of sodium hypochlorite. The products are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectra. The catalytic oxidation characters about Pd/CZ three-way catalyst (TWC) prepared with different loads of Pd are also investigated. The results show that the as-prepared Pd/CZ has excellent catalytic oxidation character to CO.

Abstract:
The microstructural characters and refining property of Al-Ti-C grain refinement alloy prepared by ultrasound coupling method were studied by analytical means such as SEM, and the reaction synthesis mechanism of Al-Ti-C grain refinement was discussed. Experimental results show that the Al-Ti-C alloy refiner using “thermite reduction method” under high-energy ultrasound was prepared experimentally. Its microstructure character is that master alloy has smaller size of TiC, its quantities are larger and are dispersed. Melt reaction is generally that the source of titanium releases Ti atoms under high temperature of ultrasonic. Ti atoms react with aluminum to generate TiAl3, and react with carbon to generate TiC.
