Abstract:
W pierwszej części zasady te zostaną wyliczone i omówione, w drugiej zaś wyprowadzone zostaną wnioski związane z teologią i praktyką katolicką. Paul Tillich, one of the greatest Protestant theologians of the twentieth century, is the creator of an original theological system in which Christology plays a central role. Although the theologian was reluctant to use the term “mediation”, in his work he presented Christ as the Mediator of revelation and salvation. Tillich's Christology is a valuable source of reflection on what mediation is and on what principles it should be understood and presented in theology. This article presents the principles of shaping the theology of mediation based on the thought of Tillich. In the first part, these principles will be listed and discussed, and in the second part, conclusions related to Catholic theology and practice will be drawn. Tillich's thought in this regard turns out to be a valuable contribution to the ecumenical dialogue, since the topic of mediation has been one of the main fields of the catholic-protestant dispute since the Reformation.

Abstract:
Paul Tillich did not consider photography to be a form of art and, therefore, rarely talked about it. In this paper, I discuss what he said publicly about photography in relationship to Tillich’s own understanding of art and in conversation with some of his contemporaries in Europe. This discussion will include reasons as to why he was reluctant to admit photography to be art and how his thoughts could have been changed. Premised upon the belief that Tillich’s theological analysis of art is still relevant for contemporary theological discussions of art, this paper will try to situate Tillich’s theology of art in the midst of the visual culture of the early 20th century. I will further make two related claims: (1) there were moments of his intellectual career when Tillich could have reflected on photography in a deeper way; (2) the examination of Tillich’s reluctance can be fruitful for future theological reflection on photography.

Abstract:
Since last account of the genus Aspidistra Ker Gawler (1822: 628) in Vietnam reported 43 species (Tillich 2014), at least 25 additional species were discovered and described in this country (Averyanov & Tillich 2014, 2015, 2016, Vislobokov et al. 2014a, 2014b, 2016, Leong-Skornickova et al. 2014, Olivier 2015, Ly & Tilllich 2015, Vislobokov 2015, 2016, Averyanov et al. 2016). Meanwhile, the diversity of the genus in Vietnam and allied countries remains insufficiently inventoried. One more new species of Aspidistra, named here as A. letreae was discovered recently in central Vietnam. This species is described and illustrated with data on its ecology, phenology, tentative relations, distribution and expected conservation status. The new species somewhat resembles Aspidistra truongii Averyanov & Tillich (2013: 108), A. obtusata Vislobokov (2016: 694) and Aspidistra zhangii Averyanov, Tillich & Nguyen in Averyanov et al. (2016: 62), but differs clearly by a series of morphological features noted below.

Abstract:
In his foundational work on the problems of anxiety and self-affirmation, The Courage to Be, Paul Tillich refers to the twentieth century as an age of anxiety. He describes the century as an era in which humankind has become deeply and disturbingly aware of the threats of meaninglessness and spiritual nonbeing. This anxiety, Tillich asserts, has become a central theme for modern artists and writers, whose works have frequently depicted humankind and society as teetering on the brink of an ontological and spiritual abyss. As Tillich was aware, however, the concept of anxiety did not magically appear in literature in the year 1900. Although Tillich considers the anxiety of meaninglessness to be paramount in the present day, he gives extensive treatment to other anxieties (for example, the anxieties of guilt and death) that deeply concerned writers in earlier times. Tillich mentions T. S. Eliot, Camus, and Sartre, but he also hails Flaubert and Dostoyevsky as explorers of the “deserts and jungles of the human soul.” Another nineteenth-century novelist, who should not have passed without notice, escaped Tillich's attention: Herman Melville.

Abstract:
The work of Paul Tillich is strongly influenced by the philosophy of Friedrich Schelling. Tillich’s doctorate in philosophy, defended in 1910 at the University of Breslau evidences his interest in this author. Entitled "The History of Religion in Schelling's Positive Philosophy," the 1910 thesis was only published in 1974, in English, with translation by Victor Nuovo. Although it is a text of his youth, it already enunciates a style of writing that will accompany the later maturation of Tillich’s work, with themes that will be deepened along his trajectory, such as the importance of history, mythology, the search for identity, the symbol of the fall, the incarnation and depth of the Christian message as revelation of the possibility of harmonization between humanity and the Absolute. The present article presents a summary of Tillich’s thesis, with specific considerations that identify elements that will later be developed by Tillich, and is the result of an IC project (Scientific Initiation) coordinated by the main author of this article and accompanied by the student who provided the translation of the 1910 thesis.

Abstract:
The similitude between anxiety and death is the starting point of Paul Tillich's analysis from The Courage To Be, his famous theological and philosophical reply to Martin Heidegger's Being And Time. Not only Tillich and Heidegger are concerned with the connection between anxiety and death but also other proponents of both existentialism and nihilism like Friedrich Nietzsche, Emil Cioran and Lev Shestov. Tillich observes that "anxiety puts frightening masks" over things and perhaps this definition is its finest contribution to the spectacular phenomenology of anxiety. Moreover, Tillich has some illuminating insights about the anxiety of emptiness and meaninglessness, which are important for the history of the existential philosophy. It is interesting how the protestant theologian tries to answer to Heidegger: while the German philosopher asserted that we must avoid fear and we have to embrace anxiety as a route to personal authenticity, Tillich notes that we should transform anxiety into fear, because courage is more likely to "abolish" fear.

The article deals with the specifics of the application of well-known Protestant theologian Paul Tillich postulates of existentialist and existentialist symbolism in the practice of creating his three-volume work 'Systematic Theology'. It is emphasized that these postulates play in the teaching of P. Tillich 'auxiliary', and mainly 'educate' rather than a system-role, that they played in the existential analytics by M. Heidegger, or the philosophy of Karl Jaspers.

Abstract:
Following Paul Tillich, the article sketches the basic lines of a systematic theology of modern culture in the age of religious pluralism. It begins with a brief reconstruction of the systematic foundations of Tillich’s theory of culture from the 1919 draft Rechtfertigung und Zweifel. Then, the systematic problems of Tillich’s theology of culture, which primarily concern his concept of religion, are discussed. In order to resolve these difficulties, it is proposed to understand religion as a self-referential, self-aware, and in itself structured communication event, as well as to dispense with a general concept of religion, as Tillich advocates it. On this basis, the concluding third section of the paper elaborates basic features of a systematic theology of culture which takes up Tillich’s intention, giving it not only a different justification, but also a different direction.

Abstract:
This study seeks to evaluate Paul Tillich's theological bases for affirming the validity and compatibility of the many understandings of reality, especially as they bear on important issues in the theology of religions. This will be done by addressing two related problems in Tillich's approach to the religious. The first has to do with difficulties in suggesting that Tillich's theology of religions is pluralist, because some of his statements seem to reflect an 'absolutist' stance and others a 'universalist' one. We discuss relevant theological definitions of Tillich's and his observations of other religions and their important concepts to show that he does not claim superiority for Christianity a priori. Despite his observation of certain unique features of Christianity, he does not put forward criteria from Christianity and show that other religions do not satisfy them. His criteria, actually, are formal and derive from (1) his larger definition of religion as ultimate concern, (2) the type-determining elements of religion, and (3) the nature of religious symbols. Tillich's concept of religion indicates his pluralist stance by reason of its identification and treatment of 'motives' present in the 'prereligious and religious life" of humans, including secular movements which have a religious source. The type-determining elements, namely the sacramental, the mystical and the ethical, are seen as uniting differently to embody themselves in various forms in the concrete religions, thereby providing a religious typology that would facilitate understanding in intra-religious and inter-religious contexts. This typology therefore affirms the uniqueness of every religion, and the important role of historical and cultural determinants in the making of the special forms. So Tillich's apologetic intent, which drives him to show Christianity as having actualised the various typological elements, despite distortions which Christianity, like any other religion, cannot avoid, is that of demonstrating the nature and dynamics of religion from one example, namely Christianity, rather than that of claiming Christian superiority.

This research aims to analyze the peculiarity of Paul Tillich's concept of faith. To do that, the focus is put on three concepts: ultimate concern, being grasped and Inconditional. Based on the analysis of these three concepts, it is possible to define what faith is, and what, in Tillichs point of view, faith is not. In this analytical task, special attention is given to the of the concept of faith as something simultaneously human and divine, and to how real faith relates with several concepts which are the base of Tillich's theology and philosophy, among whose are stressed: culture, religion, revelation, correlation method, religious symbols and ontological reason. Also a treatment of the concepts of idolatrous faith and of absolute faith is developed. Finally, the distinction between the realms of faith and reason, the last conceived in its technical sense, and the harmonious relation between faith and ontological reason are presented.

This research aims to analyze the way that the theologian and philosopher Paul Tillich (1986-1965) applied the phenomenology in the elaboration of his own theology and which are the implications of this for the theological method. In his Systematic Theology, Tillich developed the method called critical phenomenology and stated this is the most appropriate method for the analysis of the theological concepts. However, the presence of phenomenology in the tillichian thoughts is previous of his ST. During the period since the ending of the First World War until the last years of the 1920, Tillich took over a revisionist stance in relation to his previous period and established important dialogs with the phenomenological school, mainly the school of Edmund Husserl. These dialogs became evident in the appropriation of the intentionality of conscious and the intuition of essences did by the theologian. Nevertheless, Tillich appropriated of the husserlian phenomenology in the critical way and he rejected, as the theologian has claimed, the ahistorical realism adopted by Edmund Husserl. For Tillich, the form and substance aren’t dissociable and therefore becomes necessary a method which values both poles. In this context, the theologian proposed the union of a critical element to the pure phenomenology, and later, in his ST, the idea of a critical phenomenology. The union of the critical and intuitive elements in the Tillich thought constitutes as the basis and the innovator aspect of his phenomenology. Comprehend this appropriation of the phenomenology by the theologian is fundamental for a rigorous understanding about the totality of his work as well as the possibilities to application of his phenomenological method for the current days.

Abstract:
This introduction presents Tillich’s notion of the justification of the doubter as a modern attempt to answer the Lutheran Christian problem of assurance. It explains the rationale of the book: to understand where Tillich landed, theologically, after the First World War, and how he got there. After locating the book within Tillich scholarship, the unique approach is indicated: attending to Tillich’s theological roots, interrogating his autobiographical narrative, making the early sermons central, and uncovering untranslated early German material for an English-language audience. Furthermore, the problematic ambiguities of Tillich’s personal life are considered. The introduction concludes with an overview of the book’s chapters.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Tillich’s Moabit sermons (1912–13), apologetic evenings, and memorandum Kirchliche Apologetik. In his memorandum, Tillich calls for apologetics as an answer to the decline of the church. Tillich hopes to demonstrate atheistic monism’s philosophical error, the abyss of its autonomy, leading towards the insight that the paradox of thought (that thought alone comes to its end) is the paradox of Christianity, that thought requires foundation in Christianity. Thus the doubter is convinced, but not justified. In Tillich’s Moabit sermons, the answer to doubt is Christ, the image of God in the soul.

Abstract:
The development of rotary claws in tiller machines has been evaluated using actual equipment and analysis based on the discrete element method (DEM), which is an effective method for modeling the movement of granular materials. The required functions of the rotary claw are to break the soil into small pieces and plow the soil flat. However, evaluation by testing using actual equipment is difficult for precise measurements, and a considerable amount of time is required for one test. Additionally, DEM simulations have difficulty reproducing the soil behavior owing to the large number of parameters that determine their accuracy. Therefore, a comparison with the experimental results is necessary when determining DEM parameters. This research aims to develop a soil clod recognition method and an evaluation system for evaluating tractor performance. The evaluation system was designed to measure the soil shape before and after tilling with a 1/4-scale tillage claw. To capture the changes in the soil shape and distribution and size of the soil clods, we developed an image processing method. This method uses pointcloud data obtained from a depth camera to calculate the difference before and after tilling. The experimental parameters were the soil moisture content and claw rotation speed. Their effects on the formation and decomposition of the soil clods were evaluated. To confirm the feasibility of the results obtained from the proposed evaluation system, DEM simulations were performed under identical conditions to compare the distribution and size of the soil clods and changes in soil shape. The experimental results showed that the location, number, and size of scattered soil clods varied with the moisture content of the soil, and rotational speed of the claw. Based on the experimental results, a comparison was made with the results of the DEM analysis to clarify the differences between the two. The developed model experiment system for soil clods and the image processing method made it possible to quantitatively compare soil dispersal between the experiment and the DEM, which may accelerate the search for parameters for the DEM to reproduce the tilling.

Levy, Avraham, Clifford Weil, and Wojtek Pawlowski. Enhancing the Rate of Meiotic Crossing-Over for Plant Breeding. United States Department of Agriculture, January 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2009.7696532.bard.

Abstract:
Meiotic recombination contributes to the generation of biodiversity as well as to genome stability, ensuring the proper segregation of homo logs during meiosis. It is also an essential step in the process of plant breeding. It generates the diversity needed by the breeder for selection of novel varieties. In this project, we have collaborated towards the goals to identify and characterize key genes involved in meiotic recombination. In addition we have shown how some of these genes can be used, through loss of function, or through overexpression, to enhance homologous recombination in Arabidopsis and in maize. Our main achievements can be summarized as follows: 1- To establish a collection of mutants, in Arabidopsis and in maize for candidate genes. In Arabidopsis, insertion mutants were isolated in the following genes: AtMSHI, AtMSH4, AtMSH5, AtMLH3, AtPHSl, and mutants in the Mre11/Rad50/Nbs1 complex. In maize, the TILLING system was established and enabled to isolate mutants in candidate genes, such as Rad2l-4a, Sgo2, and Aml. In addition, we generated phs 1 mutant alleles as well as mutants in the Mre11/Rad50/Nbs1 complex. No mus8l mutants have been found thus far. 2- We showed that mutants in AtMLH3 have decreased rates of crossover, suggesting that overexpression of these genes may enhance crossover. Mutants in AtMSHlhad no effect and mutants in AtMSH4 and 5 showed sterility. Overexpression of these genes might also enhance crossover. The effect of other mutations on crossovers in maize is still being investigated. 3- We showed that overexpression of AtMLH1, RecG and RuvC under a meioticspecific promoter enhances meiotic crossover in Arabidopsis. The effect of PHSloverexpression on crossover is expected to be determined soon. 4- New tools have been developed and perfected to study the recombination genes effect on meiotic crossovers. This includes antibodies, cDNAs and fusion proteins.

Schuster, Gadi, and David Stern. Integrated Studies of Chloroplast Ribonucleases. United States Department of Agriculture, September 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2011.7697125.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Gene regulation at the RNA level encompasses multiple mechanisms in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, including splicing, editing, endo- and exonucleolytic cleavage, and various phenomena related to small or interfering RNAs. Ribonucleases are key players in nearly all of these post-transcriptional mechanisms, as the catalytic agents. This proposal continued BARD-funded research into ribonuclease activities in the chloroplast, where RNase mutation or deficiency can cause metabolic defects and is often associated with plant chlorosis, embryo or seedling lethality, and/or failure to tolerate nutrient stress. The first objective of this proposal was to examined a series of point mutations in the PNPase enzyme of Arabidopsis both in vivo and in vitro. This goal is related to structure-function analysis of an enzyme whose importance in many cellular processes in prokaryotes and eukaryotes has only begun to be uncovered. PNPase substrates are mostly generated by endonucleolytic cleavages for which the catalytic enzymes remain poorly described. The second objective of the proposal was to examine two candidate enzymes, RNase E and RNase J. RNase E is well-described in bacteria but its function in plants was still unknown. We hypothesized it catalyzes endonucleolytic cleavages in both RNA maturation and decay. RNase J was recently discovered in bacteria but like RNase E, its function in plants had yet to be explored. The results of this work are described in the scientific manuscripts attached to this report. We have completed the first objective of characterizing in detail TILLING mutants of PNPase Arabidopsis plants and in parallel introducing the same amino acids changes in the protein and characterize the properties of the modified proteins in vitro. This study defined the roles for both RNase PH core domains in polyadenylation, RNA 3’-end maturation and intron degradation. The results are described in the collaborative scientific manuscript (Germain et al 2011). The second part of the project aimed at the characterization of the two endoribonucleases, RNase E and RNase J, also in this case, in vivo and in vitro. Our results described the limited role of RNase E as compared to the pronounced one of RNase J in the elimination of antisense transcripts in the chloroplast (Schein et al 2008; Sharwood et al 2011). In addition, we characterized polyadenylation in the chloroplast of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and in Arabidopsis (Zimmer et al 2009). Our long term collaboration enabling in vivo and in vitro analysis, capturing the expertise of the two collaborating laboratories, has resulted in a biologically significant correlation of biochemical and in planta results for conserved and indispensable ribonucleases. These new insights into chloroplast gene regulation will ultimately support plant improvement for agriculture.

Rosendal Jensen,, Niels, Malene Engsig Brodersen, and Naya Hansen. Evalueringsrapport. Steiner HF. Aarhus Universitet, DPU, November 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.7146/aul.498.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract:
