The ca. 1600–1580 Ma time slice is recognised as a significant period of magmatism and deformation throughout eastern Proterozoic Australia. Within the northern Yorke Peninsula, this period was associated with the emplacement of multiple phases of the Tickera Granite; an intensely foliated orange granite, a white leucogranite and a red granite. These granites belong to the broader Hiltaba Suite that was emplaced at shallow crustal levels, throughout the Gawler Craton. Geochemical and isotopic analysis suggests these granite phases were derived from a heterogeneous source region. The orange and red granites were derived from the Donington Suite and/or the Wallaroo Group metasediments with slight contamination from an Archean basement. The white leucogranite is sourced from a similar but slightly more mafic/lower crustal source. Phases of the Tickera Granite were emplaced synchronously with deformation that resulted in development of a prominent northeast trending structural grain throughout the Yorke Peninsula region. This fabric is a composite of two fold generations; early isoclinal folds that were refolded by later open upright folds. Isoclinal folding may have occurred during the ca. 1730–1690 Ma Kimban Orogeny, or just prior to emplacement of the Tickera Granite at ca. 1597–1577 Ma. The upright fold generation was contemporaneous with the emplacement of the Tickera Granite. The Yorke Peninsula shares a common geological history with the Curnamona Province, which was deformed during the ca. 1600–1585 Ma Olarian Orogeny, and resulted in development of early isoclinal (recumbent) folds overprinted by an upright fold generation, a dominant northeast–trending structural grain and spatially and temporally related intrusions. This suggests an apparent correlation with the geological history of the Curnamona Province, and that the Olarian Orogeny may have also affected the southeastern Gawler Craton. Constraint on the timing of the earlier isoclinal fold generation in the Yorke Peninsula will allow further understanding of the similarities between the two regions.

This chapter details the making of the Sousa Band. When the modern Marine Band makes its annual tours, it travels as a representative of the Marine Corps, but their 1891 outing was to be a commercial enterprise. Every bandsman was granted leave from the military and then personally contracted to former Minnesota secretary of state David Blakely. As a result, from April 1 to May 3, 1891, the band functioned as a civilian ensemble. Performances would not be free, nor would they be spread evenly across the country. Venues were instead selected on the basis of the band's likely draw, and ticket prices were negotiated with local managers. This was to be a commercial enterprise with David Blakely at the helm.

This chapter looks at Venizelos's first steps as head of government in Athens. They showed that he was determined to secure a solid majority, enabling him to implement his program, starting with constitutional revision. Rebutting the hostility of the Ottomans, for whom as the architect of enosis he was deeply suspect, he appointed a government of five ministers of whom only two had served in previous parliaments. This was new blood. Action on the constitution was held up by a major row in parliament (itself with constitutional implications) over the question of dissolution of the assembly, which Venizelos requested. The King granted this, leading to new elections which the old political parties boycotted, thus cutting their own throats. The old party leaders, Theotokis, Rallis and others, had underestimated the new prime minister, who secured an impressive majority. Young deputies such as Kafandaris, elected on Rallis's ticket, soon followed Venizelos, joining the liberal party.

In 1971, outgoing Governor Nunn handpicked Tom Emberton to be the Republican candidate for governor and Host to run for lieutenant governor. At that time, the two offices were elected separately, so the two men were not on the same ticket. Emberton lost to Democrat Wendell Ford, and Host lost to Democrat Julian Carroll. After his defeat, Host decided to return to the private sector and established Jim Host & Associates. The Lexington Tourist and Convention Commission also hired him to serve as its executive director and tasked him with obtaining an urban renewal grant for downtown Lexington that would include the construction of a convention center, arena, hotel, and retail shopping mall. Host became the executive director of the Lexington Center Board, which developed plans for the new complex. He convinced University of Kentucky president Otis Singletary to move UK basketball games downtown to the new arena, oversaw the bidding process to construct the site, convinced Hyatt to build a hotel at the location, and oversaw the building of Rupp Arena, the mall, and the Heritage Hall convention center.
