Abstract:
With the availability of fast internet and convenient imaging devices such as smart phones, videos are becoming increasingly popular and important content on social media platforms recently. They are widely adopted for various purposes including, but not limited to, advertisement, education and entertainment. One important problem in understanding videos is thumbnail generation, which involves selecting one or a few images, typically frames, which are representative of the given video. These thumbnails can then be used not only as a summary display for videos, but also for representing them in downstream content models. Thus, thumbnail selection plays an important role in a user’s experience when exploring and consuming videos. Due to the large scale of data, automatic thumbnail generation methods are desired since it is impossible to manually select thumbnails for all videos. In this paper, we propose a practical thumbnail generation method. Our method is designed in a way that will select representative and high-quality frames as thumbnails. Specifically, to capture semantic information of video frames, we leverage the embeddings of video frames generated by a state of the art con-volutional neural network pretrained in a supervised manner on external image data, using them to find representative frames in a semantic space. To efficiently evaluate the quality of each frame, we train a linear model on top of the embeddings to predict quality instead of computing it from raw pixels. We conduct experiments on real videos and show the proposed algorithm is able to generate relevant and engaging thumbnails.

Abstract:
In this paper, we propose a partial decoding method with limited memory usage for high-speed thumbnail extraction. The proposed method performs a partial inverse transform and a partial intra prediction in order to reconstruct pixels for intra prediction and thumbnails. Thereafter, the reconstructed pixels at the bottom and right line of the block are stored in the line buffer and the thumbnail buffer without being stored in the decoded picture buffer with full resolution. H.264/AVC, HEVC and VP9 video codecs have different coding structures, prediction and transforms; however, the proposed algorithm can be applied to the corresponding codecs in the same manner. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we implemented the proposed algorithm for H.264/AVC, HEVC and VP9. We found that the thumbnail extraction time of the proposed method decreased by 66% in H.264/AVC, 52% in HEVC and 48% in VP9 as compared to the full decoding method.

Abstract:
Thumbnail image is widely used in electronic devices to help the user to scan through original high resolution images. Hence, it is essential to represent the thumbnail image correspondingly to the original image. A blur image should not appear to be a clear image in thumbnail form, where this situation might mislead the perceptual analysis of user. The main purpose of this research work is to develop a downsampling algorithm to create a thumbnail image which includes blur information. The proposed method has three stages involved to obtain the proposed output thumbnail, which are preliminary processes, blur detection, and lastly image downsampling. For preliminary processes, Sobel first-order derivatives, gradient magnitude, and gradient orientation are determined. In blur detection stage, local maximum, local minimum, and gradient orientation are ultilized to calculate the edge width. The thumbnail image with blur information is generated using the average edge width map as a weightage to integrate blur information. This proposed method has achieved satisfying results and has high potential to be applied as one of the thumbnail generation options for photo viewing.

Abstract:
Thumbnail image with blurry edge information has attracted much attention in recent years. Thumbnail image, which is a tiny version of the original image, enables user to scan through a large proportion of image data for elimination of blurry image or picking up a sharp and a nice image in user’s perspective. The thumbnail image is being utilized commonly in camera, smart phone, and other computing devices. In this paper, a method to embed blurry edge information in thumbnail images is proposed. This method is straight forward and simple to be implemented in electronic products. The image will undergo edge width measurement process by finding the local maximum and local minimum locations based on its edge magnitude. This is obtained after the implementation of horizontal and vertical first order derivatives of the original high resolution input image. The blur edges will be emphasized by utilizing edge width information during downsampling process to enable users to identify blurry edge image distinctively. Experimental results show a satisfactory outcome in embedding blurry characteristics of the original image to thumbnail image on the proposed method.

Abstract:
Purpose Many aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems require the use of an external display that is represented via a visual modality. It is critical to evaluate and understand visual–perceptual processing in individuals with disabilities who could benefit from AAC. One way to evaluate how individuals process visual materials is through research-based automated eye-tracking technologies that obtain a fine-grained stream of data concerning gaze paths of visual attention. Method The current study examined how individuals with autism spectrum disorder ( n = 13), Down syndrome ( n = 13), intellectual and developmental disabilities ( n = 9), or typical development ( n = 20) responded to a spoken prompt to find a thumbnail-sized navigation key within a complex AAC display, including a main visual scene display (VSD) and a navigation bar of four thumbnail-sized VSDs. Stimuli were presented on a monitor containing automated eye-tracking research technology that recorded patterns of visual attention. Results Participants across groups spent more time fixating on a target thumbnail VSD navigation image after the presentation of the spoken cue to look at the target, compared to before the presentation of the spoken cue; they also spent more time looking at the target thumbnail VSD than the other thumbnail-sized VSDs in the navigation bar after the cue. Discussion Participants were able to locate the target thumbnail VSDs, even within the context of a visually complex AAC display. Implications for the design of AAC displays and for assessment of comprehension are discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis establishes the evidential value of thumbnail cache file fragments identified in unallocated space. A set of criteria to evaluate the evidential value of thumbnail cache artefacts were created by researching the evidential constraints present in Forensic Computing. The criteria were used to evaluate the evidential value of live system thumbnail caches and thumbnail cache file fragments identified in unallocated space. Thumbnail caches can contain visual thumbnails and associated metadata which may be useful to an analyst during an investigation; the information stored in the cache may provide information on the contents of files and any user or system behaviour which interacted with the file. There is a standard definition of the purpose of a thumbnail cache, but not the structure or implementation; this research has shown that this has led to some thumbnail caches storing a variety of other artefacts such as network place names. The growing interest in privacy and security has led to an increase in user’s attempting to remove evidence of their activities; information removed by the user may still be available in unallocated space. This research adapted popular methods for the identification of contiguous files to enable the identification of single cluster sized fragments in Windows 7, Ubuntu, and Kubuntu. Of the four methods tested, none were able to identify each of the classifications with no false positive results; this result led to the creation of a new approach which improved the identification of thumbnail cache file fragments. After the identification phase, further research was conducted into the reassembly of file fragments; this reassembly was based solely on the potential thumbnail cache file fragments and structural and syntactical information. In both the identification and reassembly phases of this research image only file fragments proved the most challenging resulting in a potential area of continued future research. Finally this research compared the evidential value of live system thumbnail caches with identified and reassembled fragments. It was determined that both types of thumbnail cache artefacts can provide unique information which may assist with a digital investigation. ii This research has produced a set of criteria for determining the evidential value of thumbnail cache artefacts; it has also identified the structure and related user and system behaviour of popular operating system thumbnail cache implementations. This research has also adapted contiguous file identification techniques to single fragment identification and has developed an improved method for thumbnail cache file fragment identification. Finally this research has produced a proof of concept software tool for the automated identification and reassembly of thumbnail cache file fragments.

Powell, Natasha. "Supporting the design process of distributed and collocated multidisciplinary design teams through tag and thumbnail based organization of design documents." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/37199.

Full text
Abstract:
In the multidisciplinary design process, design documents are used to help support a team's design and mediate any misunderstandings that occur. Current methods of organizing such design documents are either difficult to keep up to date physically with their digital versions, or inhibit distributed users access to important comparative information. Digital tag and content thumbnail-based document organization is presented as a possible alternative. The effects of tag-based document organization on the manner in which collocated and distributed design teams categorize, review and search design documents and resolve design misunderstandings were compared to the effects of traditional physical (the pin up walls of project rooms)&digital (shared digital file folders) document organization. Student participant design teams were assembled. These teams were observed organizing a provided set of design documents and develop a design solution as a team using either tag-based or traditional physical or digital document organization. Team members were given retrieval tests to compare search times between methods of document organization. User feedback on organization preferences were collected and used to develop a conceptual prototype of a document organization interface supportive of the multidisciplinary design process. Though the quantitative results did no clearly favor tag-based organization, observational results and user comments were in support of the capabilities tag-based organization provides.

Fidan, Guven. "Identifying The Effectiveness Of A Web Search Engine With Turkish Domain Dependent Impacts And Global Scale Information Retrieval Improvements." Phd thesis, METU, 2012. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12614116/index.pdf.

Abstract:
This study investigates the effectiveness of a Web search engine with newly added or improved features in Web search engine architecture. These features can be categorized into three groups: The impact of link quality and usage information on page importance calculation
the use of Turkish stemmer for indexing and query substitution
and, the use of thumbnails for Web search engine result visualization. As Web search engines have become the primary means for finding and accessing information on the Internet, the effectiveness of Web search engines should be evaluated on the idea of how effectively and efficiently they assist users achieve a query, which defines performance criteria rather than the pure precision and recall measures developed among basic information retrieval roles. In this thesis, we propose three distinguishing features to increase the efficiency of a Web search engine: The impact of link quality and usage information on page importance calculation outperforms classical hyperlink graph based methods notably, such as PageRank. The use of the Turkish stemmer for indexing and query substitution has remarkable improvements on Web relevance when used in a mixed framework with normal and stemmed forms. Finally, we have observed that users are able to find the most relevant results by using webpage thumbnails in the queries with decreased precision score values, despite their preferred search engine gazing behavior is much attributed.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to compare methods that predict whether an image has suggestive content, such as pornographic images and erotic fashion. Using binary classification, this work contributes to an internet environment where these images are not seen out of context. It is, therefore, necessary for user experience improvement purposes, such as child protection, publishers not having their campaign associated with inappropriate content, and companies improving their brand safety. For this study, a data set with more than 500k images was created to test the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) models: NSFW model, ResNet, EfficientNet, BiT, NudeNet and Yahoo Model. The image classification model EfficientNet-B7 and Big Transfer (BiT) presented the best results with over 91% samples correctly classified on the test set, with precision and recall around 0.7. Model prediction was further investigated using Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanation (LIME), a model explainability technique, and concluded that the model uses coherent regions of the thumbnail according to a human perspective such as legs, abdominal, and chest to classify images as unsafe.
