Abstract:
This book is a continuation of Thucydides' books on the Archidamian War, providing an introduction (on Thucydides' history and on the Peloponnesian War), Greek text with selective critical apparatus and facing translation, and a commentary which should be useful not only to specialists but also to readers who know little or no Greek, and which assumes no previous acquaintance with Thucydides. Matters of text and language are discussed when necessary, but the emphasis is on the war which formed Thucydides' subject matter and on the way in which he has chosen to treat the subject.

Abstract:
The great number of set speeches in Thucydides’ work reflects the importance of the art of persuasion in his world, but also exhibits an awareness of the limitations of that art. Far from suggesting straightforward explanations, in their multifarious, dynamic relation to their narrative contexts, immediate or remote, Thucydides’ speeches create a dialectical historiography. Their diversity regarding a series of criteria (speakers, audiences, themes, communicative situations, impact, way of introduction, stylistic choices) is sometimes concealed by the uniformity of language and common ideological presuppositions. While indirect discourse allows for more authorial control, direct speeches combine particular points of view with considerations on general matters. The openness and ambiguity of Thucydides’ rhetorically formulated statement on his method of composing his speeches is in alignment with his effort to keep nothing more than is necessary or helpful (for his purposes) from the original speeches.

Hutchinson, G. O. Chaereas Lives (Chariton 5.8.1–3). Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198821717.003.0021.

Abstract:
A climactic point in Chariton contrasts with the passage of Heliodorus considered in the previous chapter. The language of theatre is used in both; but Chariton orchestrates an almost operatic complication of characters with contrasting feelings. Rhythm brings out the complication with pointed ingenuity. The account culminates in wry extremity on the king of Persia: love overcomes all. Thucydides is again an important layer, but all is turned in the direction of ingenious intricacy sharply mastered. It is also seen how rhythm helps to highlight exceedingly forceful links in language which run through the novel. Thus rhythm promotes structure on a large scale as on a small one.

Abstract:
A climactic non-rhythmic passage from a novelist is analysed, to show its difference from Chariton, and more especially from the passage in the next chapter. The passage is climactic, part of the great finale of Heliodorus’ novel. The language flows without rhythmic stopping-points, and perhaps even seeks to compensate for the absence of rhythm with arresting complication of expression and thought. Thucydides is the basis for developments which are obscure in meaning and recall in stylistic balance other prose of the fifth and fourth centuries. The writing is far from the sharpness of Chariton, to which rhythm makes such a contribution.

Abstract:
For many readers, the perspectives of Plato and Thucydides are fundamentally incompatible. Plato’s authentic philosophers allegedly occupy an unchanging world of intellectual forms or ideas. Thucydides’ world is passionate and disrupted. If we agree with these assessments, we find two authors speaking such different languages that prospects for dialogue between them seem impossible. I want to challenge that conclusion by suggesting that we can read Thucydides and Plato more dialogically. I try to show how each author opens possibilities for dialogic engagement with his own text and then indicate areas of plausible exchange between them. This interactive reading avoids the binary frames of reference of abstract and illusory peace or ongoing and inescapable war, drawing attention to experiences in need of continued intellectual negotiation and opening spaces for practical improvement. Beyond expanding our understanding of these authors, such mutual readings help us to appreciate their contributions to conversational political theory.
