Stagner, Jessica P. "INVESTIGATION OF THE MONTY HALL DILEMMA IN PIGEONS AND RATS." UKnowledge, 2013. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/psychology_etds/31.

Abstract:
In the Monty Hall Dilemma (MHD), three doors are presented with a prize behind one and participants are instructed to choose a door. One of the unchosen doors is then shown to not have the prize and the participant can choose to stay with their door or switch to the other one. The optimal strategy is to switch. Herbranson and Schroeder (2010) found that humans performed poorly on this task, whereas pigeons learned to switch readily. However, we found that pigeons learned to switch at level only slightly above humans. We also found that pigeons stay nearly exclusively when staying is the optimal strategy and when staying and switching are reinforced equally (Stagner, Rayburn-Reeves, & Zentall, 2013). In Experiment 1, rats were trained under these same conditions to observe if possible differences in foraging strategy would influence performance on this task. In Experiment 2, pigeons were trained in an analogous procedure to better compare the two species. We found that both species were sensitive to the overall probability of reinforcement, as both switched significantly more often than subjects in a group that were reinforced equally for staying and switching and a group that was reinforced more often for staying. Overall, the two species performed very similarly within the parameters of the current procedure.

Abstract:
Ambulance hall is a significant station during emergency treatment. Patients need to be transferred from ambulance cars to the hospital’s building in the hall. Eligible performance of ventilation system to supply satisfied thermal comfort and healthy indoor air quality is very important. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation as a broadly applied technology for predicting fluid flow distribution has been implemented in this project. There has two objectives for the project. The first objective is to make comparison between the three CFD software which consists of ANSYS Fluent, Star-CCM+ and IESVE Mcroflo according to CFD modeling of the baseline model. And the second objective is to build CFD modeling for cases with difference boundary conditions to verify the designed ventilation system performance of the ambulance hall. In terms of simulation results from the three baseline models, ANSYS Fluent is conclusively recommended for CFD modeling of complicated indoor fluid environment compared with Star-CCM+ and IESVE Microflo. Regarding to the second objective, simulation results of case 2 and case 3 have shown the designed ventilation system for the ambulance hall satisfied thermal comfort level which regulated by ASHRAE standard with closed gates. Nevertheless, threshold limit value of the contaminants concentration which regulated by ASHRAE IAQ Standard cannot be achieved. From simulation results of case 4.1 to 4.3 shown that the designed ventilation system cannot satisfy indoor thermal comfort level when the gates of the ambulance hall opened in winter. In conclusion, measures for decreasing contaminants concentration and increasing indoor air temperature demanded to be considered in further design.

Goldberg, Tatjana. "Maud Powell, Marie Hall & Alma Moodie : a gendered re-evaluation of three violinists." Thesis, City University London, 2015. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/14997/.

Full text
Abstract:
Music as a reflection of a wider culture provides a fruitful area in which to investigate the complex relationship between gender, sexuality and culture. Bearing in mind that many accounts of the changes in Western violin playing concentrate almost entirely upon male virtuosi this thesis investigates the extent to which gender and the corresponding socially constructed identity influenced how pioneer female violinists are seen in the history of the violin. In particular, this thesis investigates the lives and careers of the American Maud Powell, Australianborn Alma Moodie and Briton Marie Hall in order to establish their role in promoting then-contemporary music, as well as considering their contribution to the history of early recordings and in the case of Maud Powell, her significance in the development of the solo recital. At the dawn of the twentieth century these women captivated the public with their artistry. Moreover, they inspired, collaborated and premiered important then-contemporary violin works. Powell’s and Hall’s progressive outlook also embraced the new technology of recording, recognising its importance for the popularisation of art music. However they were assigned, at best, second place by historians. Therefore this research, by a modification of the traditional, patriarchal estimations of their legacy, aims for a more profound assessment of their merits as players and a re-evaluation of their place in the history of the violin.

Abstract:

Languages & Linguistics, 2007. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/40752.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation consists of a critical component, 'Memoir-Writing and the Post-Colonial Southeast Asian Subject' and a creative piece titled Across Three Languages, Two Lands: A Life Narrative. Critical Component: Stuart Hall's definition of the individual as a subject underpins the critical component of my dissertation. Hall, working with Foucault's concept of subjectivity, states that 'the subject is produced within discourse ... It must submit to its rules and conventions, to its dispositions of power/knowledge' (Hall, 1997a, p. 55). For the purpose of this dissertation, I focus on cultural and social influences that impact on the post-colonial subject of Southeast Asia during the time period covered in the life narrative. In terms of cultural discourse, I investigate the adoption of English over the individual's native language, and by inference culture, as one's first language. In the area of social discourse, I look into the influence of nationalism in the context of Malaysia and Singapore. My investigation is carried out through an analysis of Maxine Hong Kingston's Woman Warrior. The Return by K.S. Maniam and Among the White Moonfaces by Shirley Lim. Through the creative component, I strive to do two things: narrate a personal story and in it, portray aspects of social history. The critical essay provides explanations for a more cogent reading of the life story. In addition the essay brings another facet of understanding to the postcolonial experience, one from the Southeast Asian point of view. Creative Component: Across Three Languages, Two Lands: A Life Narrative is the life story of the protagonist, Leong Kah Yan. Yan was born into a traditional Cantonese/Chinese family and grew up in newly independent, post-colonial Malaysia, in the 1960s and 1970s. Being Chinese and educated in English resulted in her subsequent marginalisation when Malaysia switched to privileging the Malays in the country's version of nationalism. Her migration to Singapore in the late 1970s coincided with the country plunging into vigorous nation-building and brought questions of delineation between nation and self. In addition, there was also the personal struggle between the role of English and her native language and culture in her life. Coming to terms with all these factors brought resolution to a certain degree. With awareness that each factor had left an indelible mark on her identity, Van's reconciliation is a middle ground where the individual is comfortable amidst communal and nationalistic demands. Impens, Yuri. "The public realm of covered food halls as the driver of a sense of place and conviviality : A case study of three covered food halls in Rotterdam." Thesis, KTH, Urbana och regionala studier, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-214666.

Full text
Abstract:
In the modern consumer economy, experience is playing an increasingly important role. We are looking to buy a special but authentic experience, in particular when it comes to food consumption. These developments have led to a resurface and reinvention of the traditional covered market hall. New versions of the conventional concept have been created, and these covered food halls put emphasis on creating an attractive public realm for the visitor. However, the different versions of the covered food halls have different public realms with varied effects on the sense of place and conviviality for the visitor. The aim of this research is to find out what the drivers of the public realm of the modern covered food hall are, and to analyze how these influence, and can possibly improve the sense of place and conviviality. Three case studies of new covered food halls in Rotterdam provided valuable insights. From the theories it became apparent that there are four drivers of the public realm when it comes to the creation of a sense of place and conviviality: economical, social, cultural and political. The case studies showed the same result, however it has come to show that the tangible public realm is first and foremost the result of the intangible organization behind the covered food halls, relating to the political driver of the public realm. The structure and the aim of the organization determine the other 3 drivers, resulting in the physical structure of the public realm, and the activities that take place in the space. Within the physical realm, elements such as personalization, flexibility and transparency have shown to be crucial to create a sense of place and conviviality. The organization behind the hall also influences the activities that take place inside and around the hall. In order to possibly improve the public realm of the covered food hall, it is therefore important to start with finding a fitting organization for the aims and goals the covered food halls has as part of the public realm.

Capel, Pierre. "Coulomb breakup of halo nuclei by a time-dependent method." Doctoral thesis, Universite Libre de Bruxelles, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2013/ULB-DIPOT:oai:dipot.ulb.ac.be:2013/211186.

Full text
Abstract:
Halo nuclei are among the strangest nuclear structures.

They are viewed as a core containing most of the nucleons

surrounded by one or two loosely bound nucleons.

These have a high probability of presence at a large distance

from the core.

Therefore, they constitute a sort of halo surrounding the other nucleons.

The core, remaining almost unperturbed by the presence

of the halo is seen as a usual nucleus.

The Coulomb breakup reaction is one of the most useful

tools to study these nuclei. It corresponds to the

dissociation of the halo from the core during a collision

with a heavy (high Z) target.

In order to correctly extract information about the structure of

these nuclei from experimental cross sections, an accurate

theoretical description of this mechanism is necessary.

In this work, we present a theoretical method

for studying the Coulomb breakup of one-nucleon halo nuclei.

This method is based on a semiclassical approximation

in which the projectile is assumed to follow a classical trajectory.

In this approximation, the projectile is seen as evolving

in a time-varying potential simulating its interaction with the target.

This leads to the resolution of a time-dependent Schrödinger

equation for the projectile wave function.

In our method, the halo nucleus is described

with a two-body structure: a pointlike nucleon linked to a

pointlike core.

In the present state of our model, the interaction between

the two clusters is modelled by a local potential.

The main idea of our method is to expand the projectile wave function

on a three-dimensional spherical mesh.

With this mesh, the representation of the time-dependent potential

is fully diagonal.

Furthermore, it leads to a simple

representation of the Hamiltonian modelling the halo nucleus.

This expansion is used to derive an accurate evolution algorithm.

With this method, we study the Coulomb breakup

of three nuclei: 11Be, 15C and 8B.

11Be is the best known one-neutron halo nucleus.

Its Coulomb breakup has been extensively studied both experimentally

and theoretically.

Nevertheless, some uncertainty remains about its structure.

The good agreement between our calculations and recent

experimental data suggests that it can be seen as a

s1/2 neutron loosely bound to a 10Be core in its

0+ ground state.

However, the extraction of the corresponding spectroscopic factor

have to wait for the publication of these data.

15C is a candidate one-neutron halo nucleus

whose Coulomb breakup has just been studied experimentally.

The results of our model are in good agreement with

the preliminary experimental data. It seems therefore that

15C can be seen as a 14C core in its 0+

ground state surrounded by a s1/2 neutron.

Our analysis suggests that the spectroscopic factor

corresponding to this configuration should be slightly lower

than unity.

We have also used our method to study the Coulomb breakup

of the candidate one-proton halo nucleus 8B.

Unfortunately, no quantitative agreement could be obtained

between our results and the experimental data.

This is mainly due to an inaccuracy in the treatment

of the results of our calculations.

Accordingly, no conclusion can be drawn about the pertinence

of the two-body model of 8B before an accurate reanalysis of these

results.

In the future, we plan to improve our method in two ways.

The first concerns the modelling of the halo nuclei.

It would be indeed of particular interest to test

other models of halo nuclei than the simple two-body structure

used up to now.

The second is the extension of this semiclassical model to

two-neutron halo nuclei.

However, this cannot be achieved

without improving significantly the time-evolution algorithm so as to

reach affordable computational times.

Kim, Gil. "THREE ESSAYS ON EXCHANGE RATE ECONOMICS." UKnowledge, 2009. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_diss/752.

Full text
Abstract:
A country’s economy is becoming more and more dynamic and complicated in its scale and mobility. So, the concerns of exchange rate economics have become more popular. My research interest is in international economics with its major factor, exchange rates and other macroeconomic variables. Chapter 1 presents a brief introduction of the three studies. Chapter Two investigate the role of exchange rate changes with particular attention to international capital flows. With liberalization of capital movements, international capital movements became free and unrestricted in many emerging market economies as well as developed countries. Using a Vector Auto-regressive (VAR) model for a small open economy in which the endogeneity of exchange rate changes is fully taken into account, I find that capital movements are more likely to be a cause of output fluctuations and current account deficits in developing countries than a channel of equilibrium changes. I also find that domestic currency depreciation is far more likely to be contractionary on domestic output in developing countries than in developed countries. Interestingly, the trade balance improves after depreciation regardless of its output consequence. These findings suggest that there are important differences between developed and developing economies in the way capital movements and exchange rate changes affect and are affected. Chapter Three demonstrates the dynamic relationship between the current account and the real exchange rate in response to permanent and temporary shocks using structural VAR models for seven developed countries and five developing countries. Special focus is given to the issue of the stationarity of the current account. Capital flows are also included to capture external shocks as well as potential structural breaks due to financial liberalization. I find that the results for unit root tests for the current account are ambiguous. By testing two different VAR models, each taking an opposing stance on the stationarity of the current account, I conclude that responses based on a stationary current account are a better fit to the current theoretical view than those based on a nonstationary current account process. Additionally, the real exchange rate and the current account are positively correlated under a permanent shock while two variables are negatively correlated under a monetary shock. I also find that real exchange rate is an endogenous variable, which is not closely related to the temporary factors that affect the current account in the short run. Chapter Four examines the long-run mean reverting behavior of the real exchange rates with its six different definitions for 27 economies using annual data from 1974 to 2003. I find that Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) holds better, and the half-life of the real exchange rates is shorter when the wholesale price index, rather than consumer price index, is used as price level measure. Somewhat surprisingly, there is no evidence that PPP holds better with trade-weighted real exchange rates than with bilateral ones regardless of the price index used. Strong evidence for PPP emerges only with the use of Im, Pesaran, and Shin (2003) panel tests but not with the Levine, Lin, and Chu (2002).

Amjad, Asma. "Exchange coupling in molecular magnets: Zero, one and three dimensions." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2013. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5755.

Full text
Abstract:
Molecular magnets with different dimensionality, whether they are zero-dimensional single-molecule magnets (SMM) or one-dimensional single-chain magnets (SCM) are very interesting, since they allow probing the fundamental aspects bordering quantum and classical physics at the nanoscale level. This dissertation covers experimental studies of two Mn-based exchange-coupled molecule-based magnets and two Co-based single-chain magnets, using both dc Hall-effect magnetometry and electron paramagnet resonance (EPR) techniques. In these multi-dimensional systems, the spin of the molecule exhibits quantum mechanical behavior at low temperature. It is quite interesting to observe the effect of magnetic exchange interactions on the magnetic properties of various complexes; hence they strongly affect the magnetic behavior. In this dissertation, the research is initiated with the study of low-magnetic-nuclearity molecules, starting with a spectroscopic study of a significantly anisotropic Mn(IV) monomer. At low temperature the molecule possesses easy-plane type anisotropy of a remarkable magnitude. Although the molecule is not a single-molecule magnet, the remarkable anisotropy can initiate synthesis of newer and better molecular magnets with Mn(IV) as the main building block. Furthermore, the interplay between the magnetic anisotropy and the inter-ion exchange interactions (J) within the molecule are probed for a dimer and a trimer where the magnetic core is comprised of two and three ions respectively. In the Mn-based case of the dimer, the low coupling between the atoms leads to significant state mixing, thus making it impossible to assign the individual spin states to the dimer or to the respective individual Mn(II) ions. In the case of the trimer, lowering of the symmetry achieved by fine tuning of the inter-ion exchange interactions leads to relieving of frustration in the antiferromagnetic (AF) triangular Mn(III) system, resulting in a well defined ground state and significant zero field splitting. Also a clear hysteretic behavior observed in this system demonstrates its SMM nature at low temperature. Finally, high-field high-frequency magnetic and spectroscopic studies performed on two cobalt-based SCMs reveal that formation of magnetic domains by exchange interactions within the chain are strongly influenced by thermal fluctuations. The chain possesses a uniaxial anisotropy with the quantization axis lying along the length of the chain. Moreover it is shown that modulation of the magnitude of inter- and intra-chain interactions results in a three-dimensional dynamics in one of the samples. Interestingly, detailed dc magnetic studies show a tunable crossover between one- and three-dimensional magnetic dynamics as a function of temperature and/or magnetic field sweep rate. Our voyage through several molecular systems of different dimensionality have allowed us to expand our understanding of the role of exchange interactions on the magnetic behavior in molecular magnetism.

Abstract:
Maintenance cost is one of the important issues in railway heavy haul operations. For the iron-ore company LKAB, these costs are mainly associated with the reprofiling and changing of the wheels of the locomotives and wagons. The main reason for the wheel damages is usually surface initiated rolling contact fatigue (RCF) on the wheels. The present work tries to enhance and improve the knowledge of the vehicle-track interaction of the Swedish iron-ore freight wagons and locomotives used at Malmbanan. The study is divided into two parts. Firstly, it is tried to get into the roots of RCF using the simulation model of the iron ore wagon (Paper A). Secondly, the study is focused on predicting wear and RCF on the locomotive wheels also via a dynamic simulation model (Paper B).In the first paper, some key issues of the dynamic modelling of the wagons with three piece bogies are first discussed and then parameter studies are carried out to find the most important reasons of wheel damages. These parameter studies include track design geometry, track irregularities, wheel-rail friction level, cant deficiency and track stiffness. The results show a significant effect of the friction level on the amount of RCF risk.As the locomotive wheel life is much shorter than that of the wagons, LKAB has decided to change the locomotive wheel profile. Two final wheel profiles are proposed; however, one had to be approved for the field tests. In the second paper, the long term evolution of the two profiles is compared via wear simulation analysis. Also, the RCF evolution on the wheel profiles as a function of running distance is discussed. The process is first carried out for the current locomotive wheel profiles and the results are compared with the measurements. Good agreement is achieved. Finally, one of the proposed profiles is suggested for the field test because of the mild wear and RCF propagation.

A Kondo lattice Hamiltonian for arbitrary total angular momentum J is formulated using a pseudofermion representation and without addition of RKKY interaction terms. An Hartree-Fock treatment is applied, and both variational and Green's function methods are used to calculate physical quantities from the linearized Hamiltonian. The Kondo phase is represented by finite hybridization. Magnetic ordering is examined via ordering vectors, but coexistence with the Kondo phase is not allowed. Phase diagrams are produced in S=1/2 and J=3/2 with second-order transitions at Kondo-paramagnetic and magnetic-paramagnetic boundaries, and first order transitions between Kondo and magnetic phases. Various coupling strengths are explored. Magnetic phases found include antiferromagnetism, ferromagnetism, and spin-density wave ordering of both commensurate and incommensurate varieties. In S=1/2, the magnetic phase exhibits a spike in critical temperature at half-filling. In J=3/2, the Kondo phase is reentrant at weaker coupling but not at stronger coupling.

In Chapter 1 the constructivist approach to language acquisition is introduced in general terms and contrasted with the more traditional nativist standpoint. Within the constructivist fr-amework no sharp distinction between words and grammar is maintained and it is proposed that children learn all aspects of their language gradually, by drawing upon general cognitive abilities. Evidence supporting this approach with respect to early syntactic development of English speaking children is reviewed. Chapter 2 focuses on morphology. First, it introduces the inflectional system of Polish nouns, and then, reviews various accounts of both the development of morphology in children and morphological processing in adults. In the end, based on the description of the system and the literature review, it is concluded that morphology is best viewed as an emerging interface between form and meaning, that morphological patterns emerge gradually, and that effects of similarity and frequency are crucial for this process. The following empirical chapters are set to test these claims. The goal is also to find answers to some 'open questions concerning the application of the usage-based model to complex inflectional systems, in particular: whether early inflectional patterns are restricted in their specifications of use, and whether their generalization is based on pairs of inflections, rather than single inflections. Chapter 3 presents a corpus study of a two-year-old child's speech. The main aim is an analysis of productivity in the use of inflections by the child and a critical discussion of various attempts at measuring morphological productivity in naturalistic data is offered. A series of carefully controlled comparisons of the child with her mother permits the conclusion that the child's use of inflections was indeed lexically more restricted than that of the adult. Chapter 4 offers a continuation of naturalistic analyses, focusing on syntactic diversity in the use of noun inflections. A measure of contextual diversity based on a computational approach to corpus psycholinguistics is applied and some issues concerning this application are discussed. The measure indicates that the child's use of inflections is also contextually restricted as compared to her mother. Chapters 5 and 6 report experimental studies, both involving a nonce word elicitation task and two age groups: 2;6 and 3;6 year oIds. The first study shows that the production of a particular inflectional form may be easier or more difficult depending on which other form serves as a departure point. The second study supplements these results, showing that whether a given form is an easy or difficult departure point may be partly determined by which form is the target. Similarity between various inflections seems to play an important role when children attempt to switch between forms. Also, effects of contexts (constructions) in which departure point forms were introduced and in which target forms were elicited were identified. Chapter 7 summarises the main findings, their theoretical implications and considers some directions for future research.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the pre-design documentation from the renovation of three historic theaters located in Detroit, Michigan. Two theaters hired architectural firms to produce a pre-design document. The third theater utilized a design-build approach to renovation. Interviews were conducted to review the approach and final outcomes. It became evident through the analysis of the documentation and interviews that it was beneficial in the renovation of a historic theater to have a comprehensive predesign process that identifies: the nature of the pre-design document, the nature of the client, the nature of the pre-design team, and the scope of work and time available. It also became apparent that the organizational approach that would apply to most any document for a heritage building should follow the Problem Seeking format of: Form, Function, Time and Economy. Utilizing this format for a pre-design record should yield a document that is concise, comprehensive and flexible.

Abstract:
Abstract The central goal of this study was to study how contrastive accent is realised phonetically in three regional varieties of Standard Spoken Finnish. Speakers from the Oulu, Turku and Tampere regions produced unaccented and contrastively accented versions of the target words. Fundamental frequencies and segment durations were measured in all the target words, and in the contrastively accented versions also the temporal distance of the F0 peak from word onset. In the unaccented words, F0 fluctuations were very small, indicating once more that in Finnish, too, mere word stress is not realised tonally. In the words with CV.CV(X) structure, the lengthening of segment durations due to stress was restricted to the initial syllable in Tampere, whereas in Oulu and Turku the lengthening extended to the second syllable. The width of the fall-rise F0 pattern realising contrastive accent was in all word structures widest in the Oulu variety, and the narrowest in the Tampere variety. In the Turku variety CV.CV(X) words, the F0 peak occurred further away from word onset than in any other words investigated. The differences in segment durations among the varieties were similar in the unaccented words and in the contrastively accented ones, with one exception: the duration of V1 in the unaccented CV.CV(X) words was the same across the varieties, but in the contrastively accented CV.CV(X) words the duration of V1 was shorter in the Turku variety than in the other varieties. The durational ratio of V1 and V2 in the Turku variety – as in the Oulu variety – was different from the durational ratio in the Tampere variety: in Turku and Oulu V2 had a longer duration than V1, whereas in Tampere V1 had a longer duration than V2. This confirms earlier observations that Turku and Oulu belong to regions in which the V2 of CV.CV(X) words is half-long (longer than V1), but Tampere does not. However, the present study shows that the relative half-long duration of the V2 of CV.CV(X) words is achieved differently in Turku and Oulu: in Turku through the short duration of V1, but in Oulu through the long duration of V2

Abstract:

/

Several atomic nuclei and hypernuclei can be modelled as three-body structures: e.g. two-neutron halo nuclei, such as 6He, and other nuclei, such as 12C and 9Be.

Indeed 6He can be represented as a three-body system, made up of a core (an alpha particle) and two weakly bound valence neutrons. The 12C nucleus can be studied as a bound system formed by three alpha particles, while the 9Be nucleus can be described as the binding of two alpha particles and one neutron.

In these typical examples, the alpha particles are clusters of nucleons. They have an internal structure that must be taken into account because of the Pauli principle.

The most realistic models are the "microscopic models". In these models, all the nucleons are taken into account, and the Pauli antisymmetrisation principle is fully respected. However, the application of the "microscopic models" is limited in practice, because they require too many laborious calculations.

Therefore, in order to greatly simplify the calculations, "semi-microscopic models" are developed. In those models, the clusters of nucleons are treated as ("structureless") pointlike particles. The models then consist in determining the effective potentials between the clusters, and in using them in three-body models.

In the present work, we have developed "semi-microscopic models". The effective potentials between the clusters are directly obtained from the interactions between nucleons (according to the two-cluster RGM). These potentials are "nonlocal", and depend on the energy of the interacting clusters. The non-locality is a direct consequence of the Pauli principle and the exchanges of nucleons between the clusters. The energy-dependence of the potentials turns out to be a drawback in three-body models. Therefore, the effective potentials are transformed into energy-independent potentials, which can be used in three-body models. The "semi-microscopic models" are much simpler and faster than the "microscopic models". They provide the three-body bound-state wave functions (i.e. the spectroscopic properties and the structure) of light nuclei and hypernuclei. Such wave functions are also the basic ingredient that will be used in future reactions models.

This work aims propose a three-phase rectifier boost half-controlled, with power factor correction, that makes use variable duty cycle control techniques, in order to reduce the harmonic content of current in low frequency. The proposed converter operates in a discontinuous current conduction mode, this way, the input current is naturally corrected. Moreover, due to the conduction mode, the converter presents entry in conduction of switch with null current, thus decreasing, the losses by switching. Initially, are presented theoretical studies of the topology in question and, through of graphs and equations, the harmonic distortion imposed by operation due constant duty cycle is verified. Functions that allow permanently the variation of duty cycle, during a network cycle, are presented. These functions have as main objective minimize the harmonic distortion in the input current, with focus in the 5th harmonic component. Simulation results demonstrate efficacy of techniques by variable duty cycle control and indicate a reducing of harmonic content of current. Experimental results demonstrate a reducing around 18% for operation with constant duty cycle. The use of variable duty cycle provides a reducing around 13%, resulting in an increase of the power factor.

Firstly, I regard part of messages that gave by significant others as the entrance to explore our mutual relationship. Then I transform my feelings and understandings of the relationships to stories through the form of illustration books. Secondly, I build a house with cement, and put for illustration books into the house. Using space to secure myself and my memories with significant others. A numerical analysis is performed for the three-dimensional, turbulent flow of air in a thyristor valve hall located at the Dorsey Converter Station, owned and operated by Manitoba Hydro. The goal of this analysis was to determine the configurations that result in increased air-side cooling effectiveness in the valve hall. The governing equations are solved using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code CFX-5. This computer code uses a finite volume method of solution and is based on a finite element approach for representing the geometry. The effects of inlet and outlet opening geometry, inlet air mass flow rate, and inlet air angle on the thermal performance for the air-side cooling of the thyristor valve hall geometry are examined.

This dissertation presents vision-based systems for monitoring model breakwater armour structures. These model breakwater armour structures are subjected to wave simulations in model halls. The goal of this research was to produce a system that is able to detect changes in the model breakwater armour structure. These changes are detected autonomously or semi-autonomously depending on the method being used. The proposed systems are intended to replace the current flicker technique method, which is subject to human error. This dissertation reviews common image processing methods for monitoring changes in three dimensions. This review refines the search to two techniques, namely the stereopsis and fiducial methods. Each method approaches the problem differently. The stereo method treats the entire structure as a holistic 2.5D volume and shows changes in this volume. In the fiducial method special fiducial targets are attached to key areas on the breakwater armour units. The targets are tracked to compute displacement vectors.

This thesis presents the development of three-phase permanent-magnet synchronous motor drives with linear Hall-effect sensors. Having the higher resolution, linear Hall-effect sensors can reduce the cost of the drive. After comparing digital Hall-effect sensors with linear Hall-effect sensors, the linear Hall-effect sensors are chosen to detect the required rotor position for permanent-magnet synchronous motor vector control. By adopting voltage space vector pulsed-width modulation, the utility rate of the dc-link voltage can be improved and the motor harmonics can be reduced. Meanwhile, introducing direct-axis voltage compensation in the speed closed-loop control, operating efficiency can be improved and current harmonics can be reduced without current feedback. This system uses a 16-bits digital signal processor, dsPIC30F4011, as the control core. The system is able to operate at 1000rpm with 100-watt dc generator as a load. By using digital Hall-effect sensors and six-step trapezoidal speed closed-loop control, the a-phase current harmonic is 31.83%. Whereas, in speed closed-loop control with linear Hall-effect sensors and voltage space vector pulsed-width modulation, the a-phase current harmonic distortion decreases 12.45%, and is decreased further to 9.72% through direct-axis voltage compensation mentioned above. Reduction in current harmonics of the motor has been verified experimentally.

Debris flow is composed of grain, sand and water, and occurs in mountainous area where large amount of loose deposit and str- ong run-off can be mixed. Debris flow behaves like nonewtonian fluid, for example, Ba- gnold model is suitable for granular flow and Bingham fluid is applied to mud flow. This research emphasis on fluids which pos- sess a yield stress. From previous researches(Bagnold,1989), the boundary layer is very thin for large scale debris flow, most of flow region is under weak stress area. We assume, debris flow is incompressible fluid. This research neglects erosion, deposition and change of concentration. Firstly, let debris flow through a channel with varying wid- th and bottom, then we can solve all the velocity components. D- ebris flow is found to deposit more in deeper and narrower area. Transmitted and reflected waves are found near narrowing region. After debris flow stops, the bottom becomes smoother. Substracting physical boundary through Tong- Mem map, we use coordinate transformation method which solve Laplace equation w- ith boundary element method, to find flow net for our computati- on. Governing equations are transformed to new coordinate system . The numerical scheme is applied on rectangular, trapezoid, tr- iangular and parabolic channel. Finally, we simulate debris flow at the headwater vallery of Tong-Men.

This thesis aims to develop a Three-Level Bi-Directional Half-Bridge Series-series Resonant Converter for DC micro-grid. Using dual resonant tanks, all components at the primary and secondary sides are the same. The clamped diode and capacitor with three-level circuit architecture can provide an appropriate current path to achieve zero-voltage switching on power switches. By using digital control method, both voltage across the primary side and the secondary side of the resonant tanks approach three-step square wave. In other words, the voltage stress of transformers, resonant tanks, power switches, and other components can be equalized to half of the input voltage and half of the output voltage. The dual resonant tanks designed according to the specifications of Three-Level Bi-Directional Half-Bridge Series-series Resonant Converter, that can operate in Region-1 and Region-2, ranges up to 380V input voltage, can adjust output voltage from 300V to 400V and can output at a constant 5A current. In order to verify that this architecture can reduce voltage stress, the voltage rating of the power switches is selected only 300V. This thesis also discusses about the voltage equalization capability of the three-level architectures. A digital signal processor (DSP) chip is used as the digital controller of this converter. The measured efficiency can be up to 95% under different load conditions.

Abstract:
We present the results of a new and high sensitivity study of the neutral hydrogen (HI) gas in three early type edge-on spiral galaxies, NGC 4157, NGC 3600 and NGC 2683. All three galaxies reveal HI disks that extend nearly or more than twice the length of the optical disk, which ubiquitously reveal asymmetries and warps. We model each galaxy using a three-dimensional kinematic model to derive the empirical parameters of the density distribution functions and rotation curves. A Gaussian function is unanimously found to best represent the density distribution in the plane of the galaxies. We also find that there is in fact a thick HI disk extending into the halo of two of three of these galaxies with scale heights on kpc. scales. This gas suggests the existence of two separate widespread components: a thin, high intensity disk component, normally rotating, and a vast, low intensity halo component, rotating at slower velocities with respect to the disk. This vertical velocity gradient is perhaps our most significant finding in addition to the discovery of the two new HI halos. We also find an unevenly distributed small-scale component of the gas in the form of shell-like and filamentary structures that extend from the disk into the halo. In all three systems we find unique kinematic and structural peculiarities including an HI disk extending four times the optical disk, a declining rotation curve, a companion, expanding bubbles, disk warps, etc. Several physical parameters are derived such as neutral hydrogen and dynamic masses, systemic velocities, HI radii, HI halo masses, etc. All of our findings are investigated and discussed in depth for each of the three galaxies.

This thesis aims to develop a bi-directional half-bridge three-level series resonant converter for high-voltage DC micro-grid. The use of a three-level circuit topology can reduce the device stresses and electromagnetic interference. The clamped diode and capacitor can provide an appropriate current path to achieve zero-voltage switching on power switches. By modulating frequency appropriately, the resonant tank can be operated in SRC region and achieve bi-directional power conversion. With the switching method developed in this thesis, the circuit has a characteristic of transformer decoupling like LLC-SRC region. It achieves quasi-zero-current switching to reduce the switching loss. Synchronous rectifier is also implemented to reduce conduction loss on the secondary side. A laboratory prototype of bi-directional half-bridge three-level series resonant converter was designed and tested for high-voltage applications. The circuit specifications are 3-kW rated power, 1-kV input voltage, and 3 A output current. A digital signal processor (DSP) chip is used to realize the digital controller of this converter. The measured efficiency can be up to 96% under different load conditions.
