Abstract:
The Royal Throne inside Amarinthara Winictchai Throne Hall built during the early Rattanakosin Period (1782-present day) in Thailand is considered as the utmost essential furniture of the Royal Hall. Due to the fact that it is used for special state occasions as well as royal ceremonies, the Royal Throne was designed and constructed with an exquisite traditional Thai architectural design based on the concept of kingship and cosmology. According to this particular concept, the Royal Throne symbolizes Mount Meru, which is believed to be the center of the universe based on the perception of Thai culture in the past, on top of which Indra, the lord of all gods and goddesses, is residing. Hence, it is believed that whenever the King sits on the Royal Throne he ideally represents Indra whose throne is at the center of the universe. It is a way of expressing the greatness of the Kings power as Deva Raja or the Lord of Universe. The designing of the Royal Throne inside Amarinthara Winictchai Throne Hall is considered to be an important sample of furniture of the Grand Palace that entirely conveys the notion of cosmology and kingship. Since then, this design concept based on kingship and cosmology and even some of the design elements that signify such concept have been included as part of the design of other Throne Halls (Phra Raja Atsana) until today in order to preserve the iconology of kingship originated from the ancient royal Thai tradition which reflects the unique identity of Thai nation.

Rotaru, Marina Cristiana. "Uses of the Throne Hall in the former Royal Palace in Bucharest from 1947 to 2019: a social semiotic perspective." Swedish Journal of Romanian Studies 3, no. 1 (April 17, 2020): 188–205. http://dx.doi.org/10.35824/sjrs.v3i1.20432.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate, from a socio-semiotic perspective, the manner in which the political regimes installed after the forced abdication of King Mihai I (on 30 December 1947) used the Throne Hall in the former royal palace in Bucharest to meet their own needs. In December 1947, Romania was illegally turned from a constitutional monarchy into a popular republic, with the help of the Red Army. Then, the popular republic was transformed into a socialist republic, in fact, a communist dictatorship. In December 1989, the communist regime collapsed and was replaced by a post-communist one, a regime which did not seem willing to leave behind the communist ideological legacy, manifest, in the 1990s, in the brutal repression of anti-government protesters in University Square in Bucharest, or in the Romanian Mineriads of 1990 and 1991. The political regimes that succeeded to power after 1947 deprived the Throne Hall of its monarchic symbolism and used it in ways incongruent with its inherent function, albeit for official purposes. The manner in which the communist regime made use of this particular place is indicative of its intent and success in reinventing traditions or adapting older traditions to its ideological goals, in order to alienate Romanians from their recent past, in disrespect for the nation’s heritage. Although the former royal palace was completely transformed into a national museum of art after 1990, a cultural institution meant, by its very purpose, to save at least part of the nation’s memory, political decision makers ignored the symbolism of a national museum such as the National Museum of Art of Romania, known to many Romanians as the former royal palace. In bewildering, yet not unprecedented fashion, the Throne Hall has been recently used, by the Romanian government, as a dining hall in a series of events that preceded the takeover of the presidency of the EU Council by Romania in January 2019. We claim that the government’s decision can be circumscribed to Jean Baudrillard’s concept of consumerism, characterized by the rule of sign value as a status symbol. In addition, Jan Blommaert’s and Barbara Johnstone’s taxonomies further the argument that the Throne Hall is not a mere space, but a place, its function having been perverted by both ideological manipulation and aggressive consumerism.

Abstract:
Varakhsha hillfort is located in the Bukhara oasis (Uzbekistan). From the 6th to 8th c., it was the residence of the rulers of Bukhara Sogd. Archaeological investigations of the Varakhsha were carried out in the late 1930s, and then later in 1947 and 1949–1954. During the excavations of the palace, wall paintings were discovered in the Red (Hindu) and East (Blue) Halls (7th–8th c.). In the East Hall, the center of the art composition on the south wall was dominated by a massive figure of a ‘king’ with a golden sword, seated on a throne with protomas of winged camels. Depicted next to him was a group of five people sitting on their knees — the king's family. The elder man is making an offering to the fire on an altar. On the base of the altar, there is a male figure, seated on a throne in the form of a lying camel. This figure represents Vretragna, the Avestan deity of Victory. Mythogenically, Vretragna is close to the Vedic god of thunder Indra. In Avesta, Vretragna appears in various guises: a Bactrian camel; the bird of prey Varagn; a man with a golden sword. In Sogdian iconography, the image of the Bactrian camel is most often associated with Vretragna. The characters of the murals in the Blue Hall (the king’s family) bring offering to the fire lit in tribute to the deity — to Vretragna. The central figure of this composition was identi-fied by V.A. Shishkin as a king. In our opinion, it rather depicts Vretragna. This is implicitly indicated by the protomas of the throne in the form of winged camels and by the image of ‘the king with the golden sword’. The walls of the Red Hall of Varakhsha were decorated with a scene of hunters riding elephants. Each elephant was ridden by a servant-mahout and a lord, whose figure would be disproportionately large. They are slaying huge monsters. According to researchers, an image of the Sogdian deity Adbag is repeated here. The epithet ‘Adbag’ — ‘Supreme deity’ is associated with Ahuramazda. B.I. Marshak and A.M. Belenitsky note, that here Adbag-Ahuramazda is likened to Indra riding a white elephant. It seems to us quite probable that such an epithet could be applied to various gods of a high status. Notably, it could be Vretragna depicted here, who is akin to Indra. We think that the image of Vretragna held a special place in the visual arts of Varakhsha, as the patron deity of the Bukhar-Khudat dynasty. He was depicted in the center of the com-position in the Blue Hall in his Avestan hypostasis, and in the Red Hall he was depicted in the form of Indra.

During excavations at the Great Palace at Amarna, three large floor-paintings were found in the area known as the North Harim. Two of the pavement designs are published here for the first time. All three were connected by a painted pathway of captives. Study of the painted pavements, together with plans of the Great Palace and other New Kingdom palaces, suggests that the room called the Main Hall may have been a throne room.

Abstract:
When King Sunjong acceded to the throne in 1907, Injeongjeon Hall and Seonjeongjeon Hall of Changdeokgung Palace were refurbished and renovated. The two halls were transformed into audience area for the king and Daejojeon Hall was rebuilt to become the largest area in the palace that could perform various functions including the king’s state affairs, education, and leisure.</br>In the 1910s, the Painting of Phoenixes was installed in Injeongjeon Hall, and Japanese industrial crafts and European Japonisme furnitures were placed here and in Seonjeongjeon Hall by political intentions of the Japanese government, bringing a forced modernity to the palace. European and Chinese crafts were also brought to the palace. In 1920, Daejojeon Hall was renovated and European furniture, imported in the late 19th century at the beginning of Joseon’s modern diplomatic relations, was arranged to complete a European style audience hall for the king. Qing-style furniture and enamelware were also chosen for the palace as they were suitable for the spacious rooms and new lifestyle of using chairs and tables. The Qing-style was mostly Peranakan style, favored by Chinese immigrants to the Southeast Asia who were important customers for the late 19th century Qing artisans. On the other hand, traditional court paintings were continued by painters such as Yang Kihoon and Kim Gyujin who tried to maintain the tradition while accepting modernity even though Joseon was occupied by Japan at the time. Moreover, painters provided designs for craftsmen who made products that lay foundations for modern craftworks. The early 20th century interior designs at Changdeokgung Palace accommodated the political and social circumstances and the distinct characteristics of the space, and consequently created new values of modernity and cultural diversity particular to Korea.

Abstract:
The name of the town, Jangsan-gun (Gyeongsan-si), was officially given in 757. In 927, at the Battle of Gongsan Dongsu, Wang Geon was defeated by Gyeon Hwon of the Later Baekje. However, the residents of Gyeongsan cooperated with Goryeo. As a reward, Wang Geon changed the name of Jangsan-gun to a better meaning. Jangsan-gun (Jangsanseong) does not know its exact location. However, it was revealed that the site of Gyeongsan City Hall during the Joseon Dynasty was the seat of the Goryeo Dynasty. It was also analyzed that this place would be the site of Jangsan Fortress. The transition of Gun-hyeon of Jangsan-gun of Goryeo began with the Taejo period. Jangsan-gun was transferred to Donggyeong Yusugwan Gyeongju in February 1018 (9th year of King Hyeonjong). In 1172 (the 2nd year of King Myeongjong), Gammu was dispatched. When King Chungseon took the throne, Jangsan-gun was changed to Gyeongsan-hyeon to avoid the king's name. This was December 1308. In 1317 (4th year of King Chungsuk), Gyeongsan-hyeon was said to be the hometown of Il-yeon and became Gyeongsanhyeonryeonggwan. In 1390 (2nd year of King Gongyang), it was elevated to Gyeong san-g un as it was said to be the hometown of King Gongyang's queen.

Abstract:
This article tells about the main stages of the biography of the famous Scandinavian painter Prince Eugene, a representative of the Bernadotte dynasty, who left a noticeable mark on the history of Swedish culture. Having no prospects of ever taking the royal throne, Eugene, after receiving the traditional upbringing and education for the heir to the throne, devoted himself to the study of painting. Having experienced the serious influence of the French Impressionist masters of the last third of the 19th century during his studies in Paris, he worked fruitfully in various genres for a long time, leaving an extensive creative legacy: his brush owns not only numerous canvases presented both in leading museums in Sweden and world-class collections (the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum), but also monuments of monumental painting — in particular, frescoes in the Stockholm City Hall and the Royal Drama Theater. The activity of Prince Eugene as a representative of the Swedish royal court during the period on the eve of the dissolution of the Swedish-Norwegian union is a significant research interest. Prince Eugene made certain efforts to preserve the unity of Sweden and Norway by popularizing such ideas in the Norwegian creative environment, where he had wide acquaintances and a certain popularity and was even proposed by such famous figures of Norwegian culture as K. Hamsun and B. Bjornson as a possible candidate for the role of king of Norway. The prince-artist is also noteworthy as a public figure who held anti-Nazi positions during the period before and during World War II: he not only condemned the policies of the Third Reich, but also criticized Swedish public figures who expressed sympathy for the actions of the Nazi regime in Germany. Nowadays, the extensive creative heritage of Prince Eugene is on display in the collection of the art museum located in his estate Waldemarsudde in Stockholm, where he lived and worked for most of his life and where he was buried after his death.

Abstract:
In the Monty Hall Dilemma (MHD), three doors are presented with a prize behind one and participants are instructed to choose a door. One of the unchosen doors is then shown to not have the prize and the participant can choose to stay with their door or switch to the other one. The optimal strategy is to switch. Herbranson and Schroeder (2010) found that humans performed poorly on this task, whereas pigeons learned to switch readily. However, we found that pigeons learned to switch at level only slightly above humans. We also found that pigeons stay nearly exclusively when staying is the optimal strategy and when staying and switching are reinforced equally (Stagner, Rayburn-Reeves, & Zentall, 2013). In Experiment 1, rats were trained under these same conditions to observe if possible differences in foraging strategy would influence performance on this task. In Experiment 2, pigeons were trained in an analogous procedure to better compare the two species. We found that both species were sensitive to the overall probability of reinforcement, as both switched significantly more often than subjects in a group that were reinforced equally for staying and switching and a group that was reinforced more often for staying. Overall, the two species performed very similarly within the parameters of the current procedure.

Abstract:
Ambulance hall is a significant station during emergency treatment. Patients need to be transferred from ambulance cars to the hospital’s building in the hall. Eligible performance of ventilation system to supply satisfied thermal comfort and healthy indoor air quality is very important. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation as a broadly applied technology for predicting fluid flow distribution has been implemented in this project. There has two objectives for the project. The first objective is to make comparison between the three CFD software which consists of ANSYS Fluent, Star-CCM+ and IESVE Mcroflo according to CFD modeling of the baseline model. And the second objective is to build CFD modeling for cases with difference boundary conditions to verify the designed ventilation system performance of the ambulance hall. In terms of simulation results from the three baseline models, ANSYS Fluent is conclusively recommended for CFD modeling of complicated indoor fluid environment compared with Star-CCM+ and IESVE Microflo. Regarding to the second objective, simulation results of case 2 and case 3 have shown the designed ventilation system for the ambulance hall satisfied thermal comfort level which regulated by ASHRAE standard with closed gates. Nevertheless, threshold limit value of the contaminants concentration which regulated by ASHRAE IAQ Standard cannot be achieved. From simulation results of case 4.1 to 4.3 shown that the designed ventilation system cannot satisfy indoor thermal comfort level when the gates of the ambulance hall opened in winter. In conclusion, measures for decreasing contaminants concentration and increasing indoor air temperature demanded to be considered in further design.

Goldberg, Tatjana. "Maud Powell, Marie Hall & Alma Moodie : a gendered re-evaluation of three violinists." Thesis, City University London, 2015. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/14997/.

Full text
Abstract:
Music as a reflection of a wider culture provides a fruitful area in which to investigate the complex relationship between gender, sexuality and culture. Bearing in mind that many accounts of the changes in Western violin playing concentrate almost entirely upon male virtuosi this thesis investigates the extent to which gender and the corresponding socially constructed identity influenced how pioneer female violinists are seen in the history of the violin. In particular, this thesis investigates the lives and careers of the American Maud Powell, Australianborn Alma Moodie and Briton Marie Hall in order to establish their role in promoting then-contemporary music, as well as considering their contribution to the history of early recordings and in the case of Maud Powell, her significance in the development of the solo recital. At the dawn of the twentieth century these women captivated the public with their artistry. Moreover, they inspired, collaborated and premiered important then-contemporary violin works. Powell’s and Hall’s progressive outlook also embraced the new technology of recording, recognising its importance for the popularisation of art music. However they were assigned, at best, second place by historians. Therefore this research, by a modification of the traditional, patriarchal estimations of their legacy, aims for a more profound assessment of their merits as players and a re-evaluation of their place in the history of the violin.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Between the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century the British Museum acquired as part of its cuneiform collections 120 economic tablets from Uruk dating to the Seleucid period; they belong to what has been described as “the most spectacular Hellenistic archives available today”. This book offers an analysis of the collection, accompanied by text editions. The approach adopted is to explore the documents in three main thematic sections: arable land, urban properties, and temple prebends. The administrative texts have been treated as a group. Particular attention is paid to the role played by specific families, individuals or groups in each area of interest, as well as to shedding new light on the ownership patterns and business strategies that characterised the activities of the parties to the documents.

Peacock, Thomas Love. Headlong Hall. Edited by Nicholas Joukovsky. Cambridge University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9781139344241.

Full text
Abstract:
Thomas Love Peacock (1785‒1866) is one of the most distinctive prose satirists of the Romantic period. The Cambridge Edition of the Novels of Thomas Love Peacock offers the first complete text of these works to appear for more than half a century. Headlong Hall (1816), Peacock's earliest work of dialogic and satirical fiction, was the most popular of his tales during his lifetime and considered his signature novel. An episodic plot and a country house setting provide the framework for a sparkling intellectual comedy that embraces music, gastronomy, philosophy, politics, craniology, painting, and landscape gardening. This edition supplies an authoritative text and a comprehensive introduction tracing the genesis, composition, publication, reception, and revision of the novel. Extensive explanatory notes throw light on the Welsh backdrop to the fiction as well as on the literary, political, social, and intellectual contexts of Peacock's innovative topical satire.

Zeidenstein, Sondra, and Kirsten Moore. Learning About Sexuality: A Practical Beginning. Population Council, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/pgy1996.1007.

Full text
Abstract:
“Learning About Sexuality: A Practical Beginning” is divided into three main parts. The first includes approaches that program staff, activists, and researchers are taking to understand people’s experiences of sexuality. The second explores the explicit and implicit links among health-seeking behavior, contraceptive practice, reproductive health, and sexuality. The chapters in part three focus on activities that challenge entrenched attitudes and behavior about sexuality that have real and potentially harmful effects on women’s and men’s reproductive health. The book features program and research work in all regions of the world with women, men, girls, and boys. The chapters are written by authors from over a dozen countries, with over half the contributions coming from developing countries. Collectively, these chapters represent an exploration of the relationship of sexuality to reproductive health, contraceptive practice, and overall well-being. For all their variety of place, approach, and focus, a number of common themes emerge.

Harriss-White, Barbara. The Green Revolution and Poverty in Northern Tamil Nadu: a Brief Synthesis of Village-Level Research in the Last Half-Century. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/steps.2020.001.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1972 and 2014, in Northern Tamil Nadu (NTN), India, the Green Revolution (GR) in agriculture was studied through five rounds of village-level studies (VLS). Over the decades, the number of villages dwindled; from 11, rigorously and randomly selected (together with a ‘Slater’ village first studied in 1916), through to a set of three villages in a rural–urban complex around a market town, to one of the original eleven, in the fifth round. During the reorganisation of districts in 1989, the villages sited on the Coromandel plain shifted administratively from North Arcot, a vanguard GR district, to Tiruvannamalai, described then as relatively backward. A wide range of concepts, disciplines, scales, field methods and analytical approaches were deployed to address i) a common core of questions about the economic and social implications of technological change in agriculture and ii) sets of other timely questions about rural development, which changed as the project lengthened. Among the latter was poverty.

Monckton-Smith, Jane, Hannana Siddiqui, Sue Haile, and Alexandra Sandham. Building a temporal sequence for developing prevention strategies, risk assessment, and perpetrator interventions in domestic abuse related suicide, honour killing, and intimate partner homicide. University of Gloucestershire, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46289/rt5194yt.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to develop understanding of the interactions between perpetrators of coercive control and intimate partner stalking, and their victims, and how these interactions may be linked to escalating and de-escalating risk of serious harm or homicide. This is a qualitative study, and we interpret our data using the lens of coercive control as described and understood in UK definitions, and the work of Stark (2009). The overall aim is to use the principles of temporal sequencing to organise the behavioural data into a sequence and organise the sequence into stages that represent potential escalating risk - the further along the sequence, the higher the risk of serious harm, with opportunities at every stage to halt the progression. Three pilot tools were developed for professionals in the areas of Intimate Partner Homicide, Domestic Abuse related Suicide and Honour Killing.

Addressing commercial sexual exploitation of women and children through prevention and reintegration approaches: Lessons from Bangladesh and India. Population Council, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/sbsr2022.1036.

Full text
Abstract:
The Global Estimates of Modern Slavery report of 2021 stated that 6.3 million people were in situations of forced commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) on any given day worldwide. Asia and the Pacific region (which includes South Asia) were host to more than half of the global total of forced labor, including those in CSE. Bangladesh is one of the three main countries of origin for trafficked persons in South Asia. India has been identified as a source, destination, and transit location for trafficking of forced labor, including CSE. Though governments in both countries have made commitments to prevent and combat trafficking and CSE of women and children, critical gaps in implementation remain, along with inadequate victim care. The Global Fund to End Modern Slavery in partnership with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation supported pilot-testing of three prevention and reintegration projects to address CSE of women and children in Bangladesh and India. The Population Council undertook a study to assess and compare the acceptability of these projects. Using qualitative methods, the study focused on examining intervention coherence, affective attitude, self-efficacy, and perceived effectiveness of the interventions.

Full text
Abstract:
"In this Research Insights paper, we challenge the assumption that team members perceive similar levels of psychological safety and consider how different patterns of psychological safety matter for team effectiveness. Based on data from 278 intact senior leadership teams, our results provide three key insights: More than half (62%) of senior leadership teams in our sample demonstrated significant variability around their team’s psychological safety. We identified six prototypical patterns of psychological safety among teams, with only one representing a shared view of psychological safety. Other patterns represented dissenting views of greater or less psychological safety. Patterns of psychological safety matter for team effectiveness. Teams whose members report greater agreement around psychological safety exhibit some of the highest levels of performance and lowest levels of interpersonal conflict. Based on these findings, we consider important implications for how leaders can cultivate psychological safety in their teams."

Full text
Abstract:
In early 2022, the Agricultural Policy Research in Africa (APRA) Programme of the Future Agricultures Consortium (FAC), in partnership with the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network and Foresight4Food, held an e-Dialogue series: Towards an Equitable and Sustainable Transformation of Food Systems. This followed an earlier, highly successful series organised with the same partners in the second half of 2020 on What Future for Small-Scale Farming? The latest series included three online Zoom sessions led by APRA over January-March 2022 on topics including COVID-19 and its effects on local food systems and rural livelihoods, and transition pathways and strategies for supporting more equitable and resilient food systems in Africa. These virtual events were designed to replace an international conference that was part of APRA’s original end-of-programme plan, before the COVID-19 crisis prevented large, physical gatherings. The three e-Dialogues brought together APRA researchers and expert commentators from across sub-Saharan Africa, as well as a wider audience. The objective of these dialogues was to examine evidence and lessons from APRA’s six-year collaborative research programme (2016-22) analysing the dynamics of agricultural commercialisation processes, agrarian change and rural transformation in the region. This report looks at their impact, what worked well, and what could have been improved.

Xin, Wu, and Xue Tao. The efficacy and safety of neuromodulation in refractory epilepsy: a systematic review and network meta-analysis. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, April 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.4.0042.

Full text
Abstract:
Review question / Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of different neuromodulation applied to the refractory epilepsy and provide a better choice for clinical practice. Condition being studied: Epilepsy is a frequent neurologic illness defined by bursts of hypersynchronized neural network activity that afflict about 1% of the global population. Unfortunately, roughly 30% of people with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) continue to experience seizures despite three anti-seizure drugs. In most cases, resective surgery, as the first-line treatment for DRE, is considered a curative therapy for achieving long-term seizure-free status, but about half of patients are not candidates for surgery due to a variety of factors such as multiple/diffuse/widespread seizure foci, epileptic foci arising from eloquent, primary generalized epilepsy, or patients unwilling to undergo surgery. Neuromodulation, albeit palliative, is an important alternative treatment for these individuals to prevent or decrease ictal episodes, which can affect the nervous system in a variety of ways.

Save the Children, Civil Society Agriculture Network (CISANET), and the Institute of Development Studies, November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2022.079.

Full text
Abstract:
A review of evidence was conducted to understand the trends and determinants of malnutrition and identify interventions and programmes that improved maternal and child nutrition in Malawi. While children are less malnourished than two decades ago, one in three children remains stunted (37%) and 63% are anaemic. Children born from younger and less educated mothers, or from poorer rural households are more likely to be malnourished. One in ten children are born with a low birth weight (< 2.5kgs), with nearly half of them stunted by age two. The main causes of malnutrition include recurring sickness, poor infant and young child feeding and hygiene practices and low use of health and nutrition services, influenced by a wide range of factors, including food insecurity, poverty, gender inequality and food taboos. Programme evaluations and intervention trials have shown mixed results but overall highlight the need to address the multiple underlying drivers of malnutrition, rather than focus on one intervention.
