Abstract:
In recent years, patients’ expectations are becoming higher in terms of esthetic dentistry. Having the ideal smile is becoming a purpose as the appearance of stars and famous persons have been undoubtedly improved through smile correction. Peg-shaped lateral incisors are a common dental form aberration which could distort the smile and may hamper patient psychology because of the smaller shape and size in disharmony with other teeth. Three-quarter ceramic veneers are a mini-invasive approach which could solve the esthetic problem of peg-shaped teeth and ensure patient’s satisfaction. The present paper was about a clinical case with peg-shaped lateral incisors treated with three-quarter ceramic crowns. It would also highlight the preparation particularities.

Abstract:
Plackett-Burman designs and three quarter fractional factorial designs are both well established in the statistical literature yet have never been combined and studied. Plackett-Burman designs are often non-regular and are thus subject to complex aliasing. However, Plackett-Burman designs have the advantage of run-size efficiency (over the usual 2^(k) factorials) and taking three quarters of a Plackett-Burman design further improves this benefit. By considering projections of these designs, we constructed a catalog of designs of resolution V and ranked by D-efficiency.

Burston, John. "The kinematic effects of three quarter and full length foot orthoses on anterior knee pain sufferers when walking and descending stairs." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2013. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/9770/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Patellofemoral pain is a common disorder whose aetiology is complex often being described as multifactorial, increased load of the patellofemoral joint is often attributed to foot function. Foot orthoses are commonly prescribed for this condition; however the mechanisms by which they work are poorly understood. Previous studies using single segment foot models have hypothesised that it may be control of the midfoot which hold the key to understanding orthotic control. Over the last decade biomechanical analyses has advanced so it has become possible to divide the foot into segments, however no previous studies have investigated the use of orthoses on different segments of the foot when shod. The overall aim of this study was to investigate the differences seen in the kinematics and kinetics of the lower limb between a patellofemoral pain group and a group of normals when using a standardised orthosis prescription during walking and descending a step. Method: Initially fifteen healthy subjects had foot orthoses moulded to their feet, they were asked to walk at a self-selected pace and complete a 20cm step down; comparisons were made between sandals and shoes, plus two different orthoses. Kinematic and kinetic data were recorded using 10 Oqus cameras and 4 AMTI force platforms. The shoe data from the 15 healthy subjects was re-analysed and used as a control group to compare against 15 subjects diagnosed with patellofemoral pain. The foot was modelled using the calibrated anatomical systems technique (CAST) fixing the marker set directly on the feet and shoes of normal subjects which permitted comparisons of excursions between the shoes and sandals and the effects of the orthoses. Results 1: Similar changes in the pattern of movement were seen between the shoe and the sandals conditions with and without the orthoses; the shoes reduced the excursions recorded except the transverse plane of the rearfoot. At the knee maximum extension was increased and maximum flexion at toe off was reduced by the orthoses. Initial Conclusions: Expectedly the shoes reduced the range of motion over the sandal condition in most planes; however the similar effects seen with the orthoses in both types of footwear suggesting it was acceptable to use shoes in the later study. Results 2: Significant differences were seen between the healthy subjects and the patellofemoral pain subjects at the foot and the knee. Both orthoses produced statistically significant results at the foot. In addition there was a significant reduction in the knee coronal plane moment range during the forward continuum phase of step down; this was attributed to a change in the ground reaction force as there were no changes reported in the kinematics of the knee. Conclusions: The method of placement of the markers was able to detect small changes within the foot segments. This study identified potentially important differences between the patellofemoral pain subjects and the normals in both the knee and foot segments. However due to the lack of pain during the walking and step down trials it could not be determined if the changes were due to pain avoidance mechanisms or if they were causative factors. Many of the changes produced by the orthoses tended to be local to the foot, except for the knee coronal plane moment range during the forward continuum phase of step down. To the authors knowledge this work is unique in its investigation of the motion of foot segments while shod and confirmed the clinically held belief it is essential to consider footwear when prescribing orthoses to patients. The use of foot mechanics could be of interest to further research and may help to define sub-populations within this condition.

Lenoir, Henri. "Le côté méconnu des visages émotionnels : perception des expressions faciales émotionnelles selon différents angles de vue." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Paris Cité, 2023. https://wo.app.u-paris.fr/cgi-bin/WebObjects/TheseWeb.woa/wa/show?t=4384&f=52463.

Full text
Abstract:
Emotional facial expressions play an important role in social interaction by facilitating nonverbal communication of an emotional state. They are recognized in everyday life from different viewpoints, and not just from full face views. However, different viewpoints do not offer the same information on expressions. We therefore measured the performance, response speed and error rate, of participants who had to identify emotional facial expressions as quickly as possible from different viewpoints: full face, three-quarters, or profile. Profile views gave slower response times with static images, but not with videos, indicating that the dynamic nature of the expressions seen in the videos may compensate for poorer profile visibility. Performance was generally better with three-quarter views, regardless of the number of viewpoints used in an experiment, which may be because three-quarter views provide the most information on expressions. A positivity effect, i.e. the fact that a positive emotion such as happiness is recognized more quickly than a negative emotion such as anger, was found from full face and right three-quarter views, whereas a negativity effect (opposite effect) was found from left three-quarter views. The fact that the viewpoint affects the positivity effect is difficult to explain by a cognitive bias in favour of positive emotions, but rather by a greater saliency of the different emotions depending on the viewpoint. The viewpoint effects affecting left and right three-quarter views could be explained by hemispheric differences according to emotional valence: an advantage of right views for happiness linked to a left-hemisphere superiority, and, conversely, an advantage of left views for anger linked to a right-hemisphere superiority. However, this three-quarter asymmetry disappeared by reversing the images horizontally. Moreover, it was never observed for fear. Rather, these asymmetries may depend, at least partially, on motor asymmetry in facial expression only for certain emotions. In an experiment with older controls or patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease, the advantage of positive emotions was also only found for certain viewpoints, which is against a socio-emotional hypothesis of a positive age-related advantage. As for altered performance for fear, sometimes mentioned in Alzheimer's disease, it was found here only for full face views, which amplifies a phenomenon already found in older control adults and younger adults. These viewpoint effects might be linked to perceptual effects reflecting a difficulty in extracting the important characteristics necessary to recognize certain emotions from different viewpoints. This 'angular' difficulty would depend on the type of emotion, and therefore perhaps on the location of the characteristic traits of each emotion, and it would increase with age, due to a perceptual decline. Finally, an experiment with models wearing facemasks showed that identifying facial expressions was more difficult when wearing a facemask, especially for older people, and especially in profile. Altogether, our results suggest that the use of viewpoints in emotional facial expression perception experiments is not only advantageous ecologically, but also from a theoretical and methodological standpoint

Abstract:
The present thesis is a compendium of three research articles produced between 2015 and 2019. The three articles are different contributions based on compositional statistical methodology and statistical inference of genetic 2/2 relatedness. In the first work of this thesis, we review the classical graphical methods used to detect relatedness and introduce the analysis of Compositional Data for relatedness research. In the second article, we propose the analysis of identity by state genotype sharing data instead of the classical identity by state allele sharing data. The third article finishes the thesis with the development of the likelihood ratio approach to infer three-quarter siblings in genetic databases. To illustrate all the results of this doctoral thesis we use genetic markers from worldwide human population projects such as the Human Genome Diversity Project and the 1000 Genomes Project, as well as from a local prospective human cohort of the Genomes of Catalonia (GCAT)

Abstract:
Many ecological studies and conservation policies are based on field observations of species, which can be affected by systematic variability introduced by the observation process. A recently introduced causal modeling technique called 'half-sibling regression' can detect and correct for systematic errors in measurements of multiple independent random variables. However, it will remove intrinsic variability if the variables are dependent, and therefore does not apply to many situations, including modeling of species counts that are controlled by common causes. We present a technique called 'three-quarter sibling regression' to partially overcome this limitation. It can filter the effect of systematic noise when the latent variables have observed common causes. We provide theoretical justification of this approach, demonstrate its effectiveness on synthetic data, and show that it reduces systematic detection variability due to moon brightness in moth surveys.

Aromolaran, Adebayo, and Milu Muyanga. Impact of COVID-19 on Food Systems and Rural Livelihoods in Nigeria – Round 2 Report. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/apra.2020.019.

Full text
Abstract:
This study provides insights from a second survey assessing COVID-19 impacts on agricultural commercialisation, food and nutrition security, labour and employment, and well-being in rural Nigeria. Data for round 2 (R2) were collected between September and October 2020, from 109 households that were interviewed in mid-July (R1). Households were drawn from a stratified random sample from three Local Government Areas in Ogun State and two in Kaduna State. This survey data is complemented by insights from seven in-depth key informant interviews. This analysis compares COVID-19 effects in the second quarter and the third quarter of 2020, which corresponds to the first and second 3-month periods after Nigeria’s countrywide lockdown was put in place.

Full text
Abstract:
In the December 2022 Summary of Economic Projections (SEP), the median projection for four-quarter core PCE inflation in the fourth quarter of 2025 is 2.1 percent. This same SEP has unemployment rising by nine-tenths, to 4.6 percent, by the end of 2023. We assess the plausibility of this projection using a specific nonlinear model that embeds an empirically successful nonlinear Phillips curve specification into a structural model, identifying it via an underutilized data-dependent method. We model core PCE inflation using three components that align with those noted by Chair Powell in his December 14, 2022, press conference: housing, core goods, and core-services-less-housing. Our model projects that conditional on the SEP unemployment rate path and a rapid deceleration of core goods prices, core PCE inflation moderates to only 2.75 percent by the end of 2025: inflation will be higher for longer. A deep recession would be necessary to achieve the SEP’s projected inflation path. A simple reduced-form welfare analysis, which abstracts from any danger of inflation expectations becoming unanchored, suggests that such a recession would not be optimal.

Gómez Loscos, Ana, Miguel Ángel González Simón, and Matías José Pacce. Short-term real-time forecasting model for spanish GDP (Spain-STING): new specification and reassessment of its predictive power. Madrid: Banco de España, March 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.53479/36137.

Full text
Abstract:
The predictive power of short-term forecasting models was impaired by the increased volatility observed in most economic indicators following the outbreak of COVID-19. This paper sets out a revision of the Spain-STING model (one of the tools used by the Banco de España for short-term forecasts of quarter-on-quarter GDP growth) with a view to improving its predictive power in the wake of the pandemic. In particular, the revision entails three main changes: (i) the correlation between the indicators included in the model and the estimated common component is now coincident for all of the indicators, rather than leading in the case of some of them; (ii) by using a stochastic process to model the variance in the estimated common component, such variance may now vary over time; (iii) the set of indicators has been revised in order to include only those that provide the most relevant information when it comes to predicting post-pandemic GDP growth. These modifications yield a substantial improvement in the predictive power of Spain-STING in the post-pandemic period, and maintain such predictive power for the pre-pandemic period.

Abstract:
This report presents a summary of findings emerging from the second round of a three-wave rapid assessment led by the Agricultural Policy Research in Africa (APRA) Programme of the Future Agricultures Consortium (FAC) in October-November 2020 to examine how COVID-19 is affecting food systems and rural livelihoods in eight countries – Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It builds on a set of phone-based household surveys and key informant interviews conducted in those countries in June-July 2020, which served as the baseline for this research.1 APRA will continue to monitor the situation as the response to the pandemic unfolds through the third round of data collection and analysis planned for the first quarter of 2021.
