Abstract:
This chapter situates Schuonian Perennialism within the larger discursive tradition of essentialist, religious universalism through a comparison with Friedrich Schleiermacher. It thus argues that Frithjof Schuon, and those writing within his orbit, made a Copernican turn away from Ibn ‘Arabi’s hierarchical cosmology to one of cosmic pluralism united by a Schleiermacherian notion of a transcendent and universally valid religious a priori, or “religion as such.” To clearly demonstrate this turn, Ibn ‘Arabi’s discourse is here historicized in relation to the polemical thought of Ibn Ḥazm (d. 1064). Like Ibn Hazm, Ibn ‘Arabi claims that the Jews were guilty of textual corruption (taḥrīf al-naṣṣ) and not simply a corruption of meaning (taḥrīf al-maʿānī) as implied in Perennialist discourse. Rather than the soteriological power of their religions, Ibn ‘Arabi holds that the salvation of the People of the Book is metaphysically determined by their submission to Muhammad’s prophetic authority.

Abstract:
Edward Shils was an important figure in twentieth century social theory, and a true transatlantic thinker who divided his time between the University of Chicago and the U.K. He was friends with many important thinkers in other fields, such as Michael Polanyi and Saul Bellow. He became known to sociologists through his brief collaboration with Talcott Parsons, but his own thinking diverged both from Parsons and conventional sociology. He developed but never finalized a comprehensive image of human society made up of personal, civic, and sacred bonds. But much of his thought was focused on conflicts: between intellectuals and their societies, between tradition and modernity, ideological conflict, and conflicts within the traditions of the modern liberal democratic state. This book explores the thought of Shils, his relations to key figures, his key themes and ideas, and his abiding interests in such topics as the academic tradition and universities. Together, the chapters provide the most comprehensive picture of Shils as a thinker, and explain his continuing relevance.

Abstract:
This book offers a new theoretical perspective on the thought of the great fifteenth-century Egyptian polymath, Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī (d. 1505). In spite of the enormous popularity that al-Suyūṭī’s works continue to enjoy amongst scholars and students in the Muslim world, he remains underappreciated by western academia. This project contributes to the fields of Mamluk Studies, Islamic Studies, and Middle Eastern Studies not only an interdisciplinary analysis of al-Suyūṭī’s legal writing within its historical context, but also a reflection on the legacy of the medieval jurist to modern debates. The study highlights the discursive strategies that the jurist uses to construct his own authority and frame his identity as a superior legal scholar during a key transitional moment in Islamic history. The approach aims for a balance between detailed textual analysis and “big picture” questions of how legal identity and religious authority are constructed, negotiated, and maintained. Al-Suyūṭī’s struggle for authority as one of a select group of trained experts vested with the moral responsibility of interpreting God’s law in society finds echoes in contemporary debates, particularly in his native land of Egypt. At a time when increasing numbers of people in the Arab world have raised their voices to demand democratic forms of government that nevertheless stay true to the principles of Sharīʿa, the issue of who has the ultimate authority to interpret the sources of law, to set legal norms, and to represent the “voice” of Sharīʿa principles in society is still in dispute.

Abstract:
The Eclogues, Georgics, and Aeneid abound with plants, yet much Vergilian criticism underestimates their significance beyond attractive background detail or the occasional symbolic set-piece. This work joins the growing field of nature-centred studies of literature, looking head-on at Vergil’s plants and trees to reveal how fundamental they are to an understanding of the poet’s outlook on religion, culture, and mankind’s place within the world. The first half of the book explores the religious and more diffusely numinous aspects of Vergil’s plants, from awe–inspiring sacred groves to divinely promoted fields of corn, showing how both cultivated and uncultivated plants fit within and help to shape the complex landscape of Vergilian (and, more broadly, Roman) religious thought. In the second half, the focus moves to human interactions with plants from the perspectives of both cultivation and relaxation, exploring the love–hate relationship with vegetation which sometimes supports and sometimes contests the human self-image as the world’s dominant species. Combining a series of close readings of a wide range of passages with the identification of broader patterns of association, this book reveals and celebrates the complexity and variety of Vergilian flora.

Abstract:
This Handbook seeks to explore John Henry Newman with critical appreciation and to assess the large amount of secondary literature. In so doing, it does not intend to protect his legacy but to examine his life, writings, thought, and significance from the different perspectives and disciplines of philosophy, theology, history, education, and literature. Newman himself thought that the attempt to acquire a deeper understanding of things called for more than a single disciplinary perspective. Although a scholar in any particular field works within her boundaries, it is engagement across those boundaries that the present volume seeks to promote while at the same time providing a critical engagement with current scholarship in specific fields. The Handbook does not seek to merge incommensurable readings of Newman into a governing viewpoint and no particular school of thought is privileged. Instead, the volume reflects a broad range of perspectives and methodological assumptions to move all towards deeper understanding.
