Abstract:

1897 veröffentlichte der Abel’sche Kunstverlag in Christiania (Oslo) das Kartenalbum Fra Finmarken mit Darstellungen und Texten, die vom Leben und der Natur in Nordnorwegen inspiriert sind. Während die Bilder von Agnes Thorsen (1862–1955), Gründerin, Schulleiterin und Lehrerin an der privaten Mittelschule Nordstrand, angefertigt wurden, sind die Textfragmente Zitate zeitgenössischer Autoren. Fra Finmarken ist Thorsens einzige eigenständige Publikation. Mein Artikel widmet sich dem Hintergrund und der Rezeptionsgeschichte sowie dem gesellschaftlichen und kunsthistorischen Kontext ihres Werks. Ich diskutiere, wie Nordnorwegen im Album dargestellt ist, und zeige, wie Thorsens Bilder in einen Dialog mit den zitierten Texten treten.

Abstract:

Filmmaker Karen Thorsen gave us James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket, the award-winning documentary that is now considered a classic. First broadcast on PBS/American Masters in August, 1989—just days after what would have been Baldwin’s sixty-fifth birthday—the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1990. It was not the film Thorsen intended to make. Beginning in 1986, Baldwin and Thorsen had been collaborating on a very different film project: a “nonfiction feature” about the history, research, and writing of Baldwin’s next book, “Remember This House.” It was also going to be a film about progress: about how far we had come, how far we still have to go, before we learn to trust our common humanity. But that project ended abruptly. On 1 December 1987, James Baldwin died—and “Remember This House,” book and film died with him. Suddenly, Thorsen’s mission changed: the world needed to know what they had lost. Her alliance with Baldwin took on new meaning. The following memoir—the second of two serialized parts—explores how and why their collaboration began. The first installment appeared in the sixth volume of James Baldwin Review, in the fall of 2020; the next stage of their journey starts here.

Abstract:

ABSTRACTThe two gun schooners Axel Thorsen and Skjøn Walborg were launched in 1810 and initially served as patrol ships with the task of protecting merchant vessels leaving Archangel from British attacks during the Napoleonic wars. Following the peace of 1815, the Norwegian authorities interpreted Russian activities in Finnmark, northern Norway, with considerable suspicion and, in 1816, Axel Thorsen was sent north to remove the Russian settlers from the area and to demolish their buildings. In 1817 and 1818, Skjøn Walborg replaced Axel Thorsen on the same mission. The two vessels also carried out a cartographic programme in the far north. In 1831 and 1832 there was an epidemic of cholera in Archangel, and the two ships acted to prevent vessels from that port docking in northern Norway. In 1864, Axel Thorsen was engaged by Adolf Nordenskiöld on his expedition to Svalbard while Skjøn Walborg was used by Graf Walburg-Ziel and Baron von Heuglin on their expedition to Svalbard in 1870. Both vessels were heavily engaged in sealing and hunting walrus at Novaya Zemlya from 1869 until both were crushed in the ice and lost in 1872.

Abstract:

Species delimitation is of critical importance in systematics and biological and conservation research. The general-lineage species concept, which defines species as separately evolving metapopulation lineages, considers multiple lines of evidence to identify lineages and delimit species boundaries. Here, we apply the general-lineage concept to the New Zealand endemic Myosotis petiolata Hook.f. (Boraginaceae) species complex, to test its usefulness in the New Zealand Myosotis L. species radiation. We aimed to determine whether the complex contains separately evolving lineages to assess the criteria of monophyly, distinct genotypic clusters and fixed morphological differences by using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and morphological data. The use of multiple criteria to identify separately evolving lineages within the M. petiolata complex was effective, but the different criteria were satisfied to varying degrees. Species rank is recommended for each of the currently recognised varieties as Myosotis pottsiana (L.B.Moore) Meudt, Prebble, R.J.Stanley & Thorsen (comb. & stat. nov.), M. pansa (L.B.Moore) Meudt, Prebble, R.J.Stanley & Thorsen (comb. & stat. nov.) and M. petiolata Hook.f. (North Island individuals only). A new allopatric subspecies, M. pansa subsp. praeceps Meudt, Prebble, R.J.Stanley & Thorsen (subsp. nov.), is also described. The distinguishing morphological characters and conservation status of each species are discussed. In addition, the low genetic diversity revealed in our population genetic analyses, coupled with few, fluctuating, disjunct populations, underscores the conservation priority of these three rare endemic New Zealand species.

The natural distribution of Steatogenys ocellatus Crampton, Thorsen & Albert 2004, is expanded here with a specimen collected near Puerto Leguízamo (Colombia) in the Río Putumayo at the Colombian–Peruvian border. This record, the first for this species in Colombia, expands its geographical distribution within the Amazon basin to a new watershed. Furthermore, this is the first time S. ocellatus has been recorded in a white water system.

Abstract:

SummaryThe effect of nitrogen (N2) microbubbles on platelets resembles that of common platelet agonists with respect to aggregation (Thorsen T et al., Undersea Biomed Res 1986; 13:289-303). In the present study we examined the effect of microbubbles on platelet secretion of preloaded 14C-serotonin. We demonstrate that stirring of platelet-rich plasma with N2-microbubbles causes a loss of single platelets that is associated with secretion. However, secretion did not increase above baseline values until after 20 min of microbubble exposure, when platelet aggregation had reached 40%. After that time the secretion rate increased. There was no correlation between secreted serotonin and the degree of platelet aggregation. Although no 14C-serotonin secretion occurred in presence of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), microbubble-induced platelet aggregation was only marginally reduced. Epinephrine alone caused significant platelet aggregation but no 14C-serotonin secretion and it enhanced N2-microbubble-induced platelet aggregation and secretion; ASA completely prevented secretion under these circumstances but failed to abolish the enhancement of aggregation compared with microbubbles alone. Earlier studies have shown that platelets adhere to the bubble surfaces (Thorsen T et al., Undersea Biomed Res 1987; 14:45-59). The results in the present study indicate that non-adhering platelets in the bulk phase are not activated by means of autocrine stimulation through dense granule material.

This essay discusses the discursive formations surrounding the legalization of pornography in Denmark in the late 1960s. The focus of the essay is the question of the changing cultural positions of both sexuality and religion in this period when both fields underwent a significant politicization. The essay stresses how visual artists took up sexuality and religion in their works, particularly as seen in the case of situationist artist Jens Jørgen Thorsen in his repeated reworking of a sexualized Christ figure.

Abstract:

The three main aims of this study were to circumscribe the Myosotis australis R.Br. group, determine the taxonomic utility of pollen characters, and delimit species and revise their taxonomy using macro-morphological and palynological data. The M. australis group is here recircumscribed to comprise two species, M. saxatilis Petrie (Marlborough and Otago, New Zealand) and M. australis. Myosotis australis is a widespread, morphologically variable species with two subspecies. M. australis subsp. australis comprises all Australian and most New Zealand specimens, including M. mooreana Lehnebach, M. lytteltonensis (Laing & A.Wall) de Lange, and several white- or yellow-flowered tag-named taxa from New Zealand, whereas M. australis subsp. saruwagedica (Schltr. ex Brand) Meudt, Thorsen & Prebble, comb. et stat. nov. is endemic to New Guinea. The M. australis group can be distinguished from all other ebracteate-erect Myosotis plants sampled to date, including the Australian endemic, M. exarrhena F.Muell., by a suite of characters, i.e. included anthers, calyx with both retrorse and hooked trichomes, rosette leaf trichomes retrorse abaxially and oblique to the midrib adaxially, and leaf length:width ratio of >2:1. Other characters can distinguish the group from M. discolor Pers., M. arvensis (L.) Hill, and M. umbrosa Meudt, Prebble & Thorsen respectively. Pollen characters were not useful for species delimitation within the M. australis group, but they can help distinguish several species outside it, including natural hybrids of M. australis and M. exarrhena in Australia. Myosotis australis, M. saxatilis and M. exarrhena are included in the taxonomic treatment, whereas introduced species M. discolor and M. arvensis are included in the key only.

The experiments presented here follow up a previous investigation (Nina Grønnum Thorsen "Intonation and text in Standard Danish", J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 77, 1985, 1205-1216) and were designed to show whether a sequential fundamental frequency lowering of individual sentence components is present in a semantically, but not syntactically, coherent sequence (a text), when the number of sentences exceeds three. The results show that such a sequential lowering may appear, though it is not evenly distributed across the text. However, the textual intonation contour is sensitive, not only to the number of sentences that make up the text, but also to the length of individual sentence components.

Abstract:

A taxonomic revision of southern hemisphere bracteate-prostrate forget-me-nots (Myosotis L., Boraginaceae) is presented here. The group comprises mostly species endemic to New Zealand plus the South American Myosotis antarctica Hook.f. (also Campbell Island) and M. albiflora Hook.f. The statistical analyses of morphological data from herbarium specimens reported here support recognition of five main subgroups on the basis of habit. Excluding the M. pygmaea Colenso species group (M. antarctica, M. brevis de Lange & Barkla, M. drucei (L.B.Moore) de Lange & Barkla, M. glauca (G.Simpson & J.S.Thomson) de Lange & Barkla, and M. pygmaea), which is being treated elsewhere, 14 species are recognised in the following four remaining subgroups: (1) creeping-species group: M. matthewsii L.B.Moore, M. chaffeyorum Lehnebach, M. spatulata G.Forst., M. tenericaulis Petrie, and M. albiflora; (2) cushion-species group: M. uniflora Hook.f., M. pulvinaris Hook.f., and M. glabrescens L.B.Moore; (3) M. cheesemanii + M. colensoi species group: M. cheesemanii Petrie and M. colensoi J.F.Macbr.; and (4) M. lyallii species group: M. lyallii Hook.f. and new species M. retrorsa Meudt, Prebble & Hindmarsh-Walls. New species Myosotis umbrosa Meudt, Prebble & Thorsen and M. bryonoma Meudt, Prebble & Thorsen do not fit comfortably within these subgroups. Myosotis elderi L.B.Moore is treated as M. lyallii subsp. elderi (L.B.Moore) Meudt & Prebble. For each of the 14 species revised here, a key to species, descriptions, phenology, distributions, maps, illustrations, specimens examined and notes are provided. Some specimens examined do not fit within these species and require additional comparative studies, including with certain ebracteate-erect species, before taxonomic decisions can be made. Future research on these and other southern hemisphere Myosotis should incorporate the morphological data presented here, with additional genetic, cytological, pollen, and other data in an integrative systematic framework.

A two-generation experiment on local Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) populations from different geographical regions. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 1722–1728. Spawning time (onset of spawning) in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) was monitored in an experimental setup and combined with modelled spawning time estimates from the wild. The experiment broodstock were collected from several geographical areas and kept in a common environment. Their spawning times in 2004 were compared with the spawning times of their daughters in 2009 and 2010. Daughter spawning time was highly correlated with that of the mother, indicating genetic regulation of spawning time. However, large individual variation in spawning time was observed. The modelling data suggests a north-south gradient in onset of spawning along the Norwegian coast, driven by differences in temperature, i.e. later dates of spawning in the north.

Abstract:

News curation tool Storify is a publication platform for journalism and news now used by diverse mainstream media, (including ABC News, The Times, Al Jazeera and The Washington Post), news wire services (Associated Press and Agence France-Presse), and news generators (the White House, United Nations and World Bank, to name a few) to curate and publish ‘social stories’ online. Within the journalism classroom, Storify is recognised as having value in enabling students to produce news stories based on social content while also challenging them to assess content, consider agendas and develop news consumption and storytelling skills (Mihailidis & Cohen, 2013; Thorsen, 2013; Sacco & Bossio, 2014). Its use raises issues that go to the heart of journalism ethics, including questions over repurposing of material, relationships to sources, use of non-elite or vulnerable voices, source selection and the need to check veracity. This requires educators to revisit the need for skill development in selection and verification of content. This article examines five lessons learned in the use of Storify in a journalism class newsroom as a tool to curate breaking news about the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and how these lessons have altered teaching practice.

Abstract:

Introduction: Total cystoprostatectomy (TCP) causes many changes in the postoperative quality of life leading to psychological, physical, social and sexual repercussions that are difficult to manage. This study aims to describe the postoperative quality of life of elderly Tunisian men who had a TCP as a result of a bladder cancer. Methods: A descriptive quantitative study was conducted with 40 cystoprostatectomized men. Data collection tools were the Stoma-quality of life (QOL) questionnaire of Prieto, Thorsen, and Juul (2005) translated and validated to the Arabic language, and the Arabic version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF5) questionnaire validated by Shamloul, Ghanem and Abou-Zeid (2004). Results: 77.5% of participants had a very low quality-of-life score. All dimensions of quality of life—body image, physical, psychological, family and social life, and sexuality—were affected. In addition, all participants have suffered from severe sexual impotence after surgery. Conclusion: Counselling pre and postoperatively needed to facilitate the postoperative transition and ensure a better quality of life related to the health of men with bladder cancer. Abstract. Mesospheric gravity wave (GW) momentum flux estimates using data from multibeam Buckland Park MF radar (34.6° S, 138.5° E) experiments (conducted from July 1997 to June 1998) are presented. On transmission, five Doppler beams were symmetrically steered about the zenith (one zenith beam and four off-zenith beams in the cardinal directions). The received beams were analysed with hybrid Doppler interferometry (HDI) (Holdsworth and Reid, 1998), principally to determine the radial velocities of the effective scattering centres illuminated by the radar. The methodology of Thorsen et al. (1997), later re-introduced by Hocking (2005) and since extensively applied to meteor radar returns, was used to estimate components of Reynolds stress due to propagating GWs and/or turbulence in the radar resolution volume. Physically reasonable momentum flux estimates are derived from the Reynolds stress components, which are also verified using a simple radar model incorporating GW-induced wind perturbations. On the basis of these results, we recommend the intercomparison of momentum flux estimates between co-located meteor radars and vertical-beam interferometric MF radars. It is envisaged that such intercomparisons will assist with the clarification of recent concerns (e.g. Vincent et al., 2010) of the accuracy of the meteor radar technique.

La présente étude vise à décrire la qualité de vie postopératoire d’hommes tunisiens âgés ayant subi une CPT à cause d’un cancer de la vessie. Méthodologie : Il s’agit d’une étude descriptive quantitative, menée auprès de 40 hommes cystoprostatectomisés. Les instruments de mesure utilisés sont : le questionnaire Stoma-Qualité de vie (Stoma-QOL) de Prieto, Thorsen et Juul (2005), traduit et validé en arabe, ainsi que la version arabe du questionnaire de l’index international de la fonction érectile (IIEF5), validée par Shamloul, Ghanem et Abou-Zeid (2004). Résultats : 77,5 % des participants obtiennent un score de qualité de vie médiocre. Toutes les dimensions de la qualité de vie sont touchées, à savoir l’image corporelle, physique et psychologique, la vie familiale et sociale, et enfin, la sexualité. En outre, tous les participants ont souffert d’impuissance sexuelle grave après l’intervention. Conclusion : Le counseling pré et postopératoire s’avère nécessaire pour faciliter la transition après l’opération et assurer aux hommes ayant subi une CPT à cause d’un cancer de la vessie une meilleure qualité de vie liée à la santé. Abstract Until relatively recently, the standard-of-care (SOC) treatment for pancreas cancer was not appreciably superior to best supportive care in prolonging life, and potentially new treatment strategies had a relatively modest bar to surmount. New combination regimens have emerged and novel therapies should therefore be compared against the current SOC. However, in preclinical development of novel agents, efficacy is frequently compared against vehicle control and less commonly against cytotoxic chemotherapy. Furthermore, virtually all studies of cytotoxic chemotherapy for PDA in mice have used gemcitabine (gem) monotherapy as standard-of-care, although this is no longer the standard for this disease. One of the current standard regimens, gem+nab-paclitaxel, cannot be given in mice without inducing immune responses because of the incorporation of human albumin in developing the taxol nanoparticles. The other new standard, FOLFIRINOX, is a complex 4-agent regimen that includes a 46-hour continuous infusion component that has been prohibitively challenging to deliver to animals. We have now built an appropriate dosing regimen incorporating these 4 agents that required a deliberate, step-by-step, program of empiric testing of the drugs, first, one at a time, then in various doublets and triplets, and, finally, as a whole regimen. The studies included close clinical evaluations and serial blood tests to follow complete blood counts (CBC). We have incorporated this regimen as the new SOC in our Murine Clinical Trials Program (MCTP). We propose that this mur-FOLIFIRINOX regimen should represent the new standard for murine studies. Abstract:

In many languages, fundamental frequency shows a marked decrease utterance-finally or phrase-finally. Ladefoged (1982) generalises that ‘in nearly all languages the completion of a grammatical unit such as a normal sentence is signaled by a falling pitch’. Bolinger (1978) also writes that ‘the most widely diffused intonational phenomenon seems to be the tendency to “go down at the end”’. These sorts of abrupt decreases which affect only the end of the utterance (known as FINAL LOWERING) are distinct from gradual decreases in fundamental frequency over the course of the entire utterance (known as DECLINATION). Bolinger (1978) notes the same distinction, characterising it as the difference between ‘a rapid downward motion at the very end, usually if not always associated with a terminal accent’ and ‘downward drift from a high beginning’. Final lowering as distinct from declination is documented in Japanese by Poser (1984) and by Pierrehumbert & Beckman (1988); in English by Liberman & Pierrehumbert (1984); in Dutch by Gussenhoven & Rietveld (1988); in Danish by Thorsen (1985); in Yoruba by Connell & Ladd (1990) and by Laniran (1992); and in Kikuyu by Clements & Ford (1981) (although not all authors use the exact terminology presented here).Analyses of final lowering range from attributing final lowering to changes in tonal categories (discussed below in §4) to attributing final lowering to compression of the pitch range in the last section of the sentence (discussed below in §5.1). Tone languages provide an interesting testing ground for analyses of final lowering. Careful experimental study, controlling for the position of a tone from the beginning and from the end of a sentence, is one way to begin to sort out the effects of various factors such as declination and final lowering on fundamental frequency.

Abstract:

Abstract A defining characteristic of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is its robust desmoplastic reaction that promotes tumor progression and protects PDA from treatment. As a major component of the extreme microenvironment, hyaluronan (HA) is synthesized by the hyaluronan synthase (Has) family of enzymes and secreted in excess by both epithelial cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). We have previously described the role of HA in binding water and swelling to create vessel-crushing interstitial gel-fluid pressures and its function as a biophysical barrier. However, HA also acts by signaling through a wide range of specific receptors that can drive proliferation, migration and invasion. In an effort to understand the role of HA in PDA development and pathogenesis, we developed a KPC mouse model of autochthonous pancreas cancer in which Has2 is conditionally deleted in tumor epithelial cells (TECs). We demonstrate that Has2-deficient epithelial cells produce little to no HA and altered the dense microenvironment. We also found that deletion of Has2 leads to an increase in overall survival and a striking reduction in metastasis. We have further investigated the cell autonomous functions of Has2, associated with 3D invasion and activation of oncogenic signaling pathways in TECs. These data implicate a potential Achilles’ heel in PDA, whereby HAS2 is required to maintain a highly metastatic phenotype involving both non-cell and cell autonomous mechanisms.
