Abstract:
This book is the first anthology of perspectives on the future of text, one of our most important mediums for thinking and communicating, with a Foreword by the co-inventor of the Internet, Vint. Cerf and a Postscript by the founder of the modern Library of Alexandria, Ismail Serageldin. In a time with astounding developments in computer special effects in movies and the emergence of powerful AI, text has developed little beyond spellcheck and blue links. In this work we look at myriads of perspectives to inspire a rich future of text through contributions from academia, the arts, business and technology. We hope you will be as inspired as we are as to the potential power of text truly unleashed. Abstract:
The yearbook on European integration, compiled by the Institute of European Politics in Berlin, has documented the process of European integration in an up-to-date and detailed way since 1980. The result is a unique record of contemporary European history over a 41 year period. The 2021 edition of the yearbook continues this tradition. In approximately 100 contributions related to their main research subjects, the book’s authors portray the events of European politics in the period 2020–21 and inform the reader about the work of European institutions, the development of the EU’s policy areas, Europe’s role in the world and European policy in the EU’s member states and candidate countries. Abstract:
Most of the democratic transitions that have occurred in human history took place in ancient Greece. Thanks to Mogens Hansen’s and Thomas Nielsen’s monumental Inventory of Archaic and Classical Period Poleis (augmented by Josiah Ober and his Stanford colleagues), a fascinating data set documenting ancient Greek political transitions now exists. But the data present an extraordinary challenge to empirical research, because so much remains unknown about so many poleis. Furthermore, and very importantly, one cannot treat missing information as if it were caused by chance destruction of records. The objectives of this chapter are threefold: first, to illustrate the feasibility of useful statistical analysis, even when applied to data as uncertain in origin and/or interpretation as those from ancient Greece; second, to provide additional evidence of the value of a systematic database, such as that derived from Hansen and Nielsen’s work; third, to contribute to literature on political transition in ancient Greece.

Abstract:
Abstract Last ten years showed that he could live that principle as well as write a great symphony about it. He died at sixty-six, hardworking to the end. His funeral was a great public event, like Verdi’s , but it would not be until after World War II that his music, so unlike any other in sound and personality, came to be known abroad. There is a world of difference between Nielsen’s first concerto for violin (1911), a work whose first and second movements are full of momentum and flavor but whose leisurely finale tends to disappoint in public performance (it is just fine on recordings), and the ones for flute (1926) and clarinet (1928). By 1916 and the great Fourth Symphony, The Inextinguishable, Nielsen had turned from a strong, assured, and skillful composer with a distinctive voice into a tone poet and musical dramatist in the grip of singular and astonishing fantasies. His works from the 1920s can be full of rage (the gun battle of the timpani in The Inextinguishable is an anticipation of this), and they mean to disturb. Nielsen would have understood Dylan Thomas’s “Do not go gentle into that good night” very well.

Abstract:
Shazia Zaman of the University of Canterbury and Andrew D. Abell of the University of Adelaide devised (Tetrahedron Lett. 2011, 52, 878) a polyethylene glycol-tagged Ru catalyst that is effective for alkene metathesis in aqueous mixtures, cyclizing 1 to 2. Bruce H. Lipshutz of the University of California, Santa Barbara developed (J. Org. Chem. 2011, 76, 4697, 5061) an alternative approach for aqueous methathesis, and also showed that CuI is an effective cocatalyst, converting 3 to 5. Christian Slugovc of the Graz University of Technology showed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2011, 52, 2560) that cross metathesis of the diene 6 with ethyl acrylate 7 could be carried out with very low catalyst loadings. Robert H. Grubbs of the California Institute of Technology designed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 7490) a Ru catalyst for the ethylenolysis of 9 to 10 and 11. Thomas R. Hoye of the University of Minnesota showed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 2141) that the allyl malonate linker of 12 was particularly effective in promoting relay ring-closing metathesis to 13. Amir H. Hoveyda of Boston College designed (Nature 2011, 471, 461) a Mo catalyst that mediated the cross metathesis of 14 with 15 to give 16 with high Z selectivity. Professor Grubbs designed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 8525) a Z selective Ru catalyst. Damian W. Young of the Broad Institute demonstrated (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 9196) that ring closing metathesis of 17 followed by desilylation also led to the Z product, 18. Thomas E. Nielsen of the Technical University of Denmark devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 5188) a Ru-mediated cascade process, effecting ring-closing metathesis of 19, followed by alkene migration to the enamide, and finally diastereoselective cyclization to 20. In the course of a total synthesis of (–)-goniomitine, Chisato Mukai of Kanazawa University showed (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 1796) that even the very congested alkene of 22 smoothly participated in cross metathesis with 21 to give 23. En route to leustroducsin B, Jeffrey S. Johnson of the University of North Carolina protected (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 3206) an otherwise incompatible terminal alkyne as its Co complex 24, allowing ring closing methathesis to 25.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the socio-political background and music of the cantata Streik bei Mannesmann (1973) that was initiated by Wolfgang Florey and written by various young musicians such as Niels Frederic Hoffmann and Thomas Jahn, as well as the then-established composer Hans Werner Henze. It demonstrates that the creation of the collectively composed cantata must be traced back to the so-called ‘proletarian turn’: the turn, around 1970, from the New Left to the Old Left that affected not only the New Leftist activists, but also politicized musicians including those involved in the Mannesmann cantata. In light of the opposed objectives of the New Left and the new Old Left — the former fought for improving the living and working conditions of workers; the latter aimed at developing an anti-hierarchical youth culture and new lifestyles — the music reveals a remarkable stylistic split that reflects the ideological split between both Leftist camps.
