Abstract:
In the article the motive of the music of the moon in K. D. Balmont’s poetry is researched on the material of his poems, prose and aesthetic articles. Its symbolic value and evolution in books of the early, mature and late periods are explored. The following conclusions are drawn. In the early lyric poetry of Balmont the moon is associated with the oxymoronic motive of the ‘sounding silence’. This motive is determined by the principal role of psychologism in the early poems of the symbolist, the ‘sounding silence’ emphasizes the state of the inner world of the hero, who is always detached from reality and is reflecting on the essence of life and death. The connection of the motive of the ‘sounding silence’ with gothic symbolic range is considered, which is characteristic for the first books by Balmont. In his mature lyrical poetry, the moon is associated with the theme of music, which has a lot of connotations. Firstly, the music of the moon correlates with the traditional motives of poetry and art. In the book Let’s be Like the Sun the world is on the line between lunar silence and melody of strings, which the poet uses to play his odes to the orb of the night. But in mature poetry in the books Only Love. Seven-color Flower, Liturgy of the Beauty. Hymns of the Elements and Sonnets of Sun, Honey and Moon. The song of worlds lunar music is connected with themes of fairy tale, magic, love, dream and phantasy, but at the same time with motives of the illusion, unfeasible reveries, death, specularity and ghostliness. Particular attention is paid to the connection between the motive of lunar music and the philosophy of music of the senior symbolist and his spontaneous mythology. No less important is the functioning of this motive in the poem The Moon, dedicated to the cosmogonic myth of the creation of the world, where moon music is related to the themes of archaic mythology and the motives of initiation, death, rebirth and transformation into a deity.

Abstract:
Since the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia in 2019, several cities have been blocked to prevent the expansion of the infection. This qualitative study aimed to determine the motives of urban residents for visiting urban green spaces during the epidemic (especially within the context of the city blockade), and what might weaken these motives. In total, 47 residents (17 men and 30 women) were recruited from Chengdu, in China, to participate in interviews. A thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview data. According to the results, the motives of the respondents were divided into strong motives and weak motives. These strong motives for visiting UGS can be divided into four themes: “A place for health”, “Escape”, “Social support”, and “A safe and important place for outdoor activities”. Residents classified as the weak motive primarily considered the reasons of “Keep distance with others”, “Potential infection risk” and “Seek compensation”. The results of this study are significant for current and future urban management, green space planning, and social well-being.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop a measurement scale to assess work motives for hospitality employees utilizing McClelland’s theory of needs as the theoretical underpinning. Design/methodology/approach Both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to achieve the study purpose. First, individual interviews were conducted to explore employee work motives and develop work motive scale items. Second, data from a self-administered paper questionnaire, completed by 388 respondents, were used to validate the developed scale. Findings Four themes were identified which reflect employees’ perspectives of hospitality jobs and culture: the job itself, need for affiliation, need for achievement and need for power. The developed scale, consisting of 22 items, was found to be reliable and valid in assessing work motives. Research limitations/implications The majority of participants were entry-level employees; therefore, the developed scale may not be useful when assessing work motives of individuals not in front-line positions. Future research could extend the measurement model to investigate work motives of individuals in managerial positions. In addition, future research could assess work motives as antecedents of employee organizational behaviors and attitudes. Practical implications The developed scale could be used as a selection tool to assess applicants’ work motives, thereby assisting employers in making effective hiring decisions. Originality/value This study contributes a new reliable and valid measurement scale developed specifically to address the unique work motives desirable for individuals seeking employment in the hospitality industry.

Abstract:
The article considers the possibility to interpret motive and concept as two parallel ways of pre-predicative matter of internal speech incarnation. Lev Vygotsky’s doctrine about thought and word, which arose in the philosophical context of neo-Kantianism and dialectics peculiar to the beginning of the 20th century, creates the possibility of such interpretation. The primacy and substantiality of art’s content before its incarnation was recognized and declared by such thinkers and poets of The Silver Age as Andrey Bely and Boris Pasternak. The word “matter” itself was a working concept in the aesthetic reflections of Pasternak. In his own work, invariant themes were embodied in both narrative and lyrical modality, and in the form of reasoning. Generic boundaries, thus, shown their permeability and, therefore, a conventionality. On the other hand, the adjacent status of artistic and theoretical ways of speech was realized in the search of the formal school of poetics in 1920s. Boris Tomashevsky in his classical textbook of poetics interpreted the “theme” as an atom of “matter”. In the status of thematic units, that is, units of “matter” division, the scientist considered both the plot and the motive. With this, he stated the possibility of two paths to dispose thematic elements: fabulous story based on causal- temporal relationships, and without fable. On the second way, according to Tomashevsky, lyrical works emerge, and it also generates dialectics of theoretical reasoning. This allows to consider theoretical reasoning as a parallel method of organizing thematic material – “matter”. Concepts are joined in the propositions exactly the same as the motives are combined in the plots. Additional similarity of concepts and motives is created by the only systemic way of their existence, established by such researchers as, on the one hand, Lev Vygotsky, on the other, Vladimir Propp. So there is a prospect of parallel systematization of categories: motive, concept, plot, proposition, and others related to them. Reference to the experience of literature shows that the thematic elements of the matter can be embodied both as concepts and as motives even within one work. The example is the “Word of Law and Grace”, in which the themes of Law and Grace, first, are revealed in the conceptual comparison, and secondly, are embodied in the images of Hagar and Sarah from the Old Testament. So clearly appears concurrency of concepts and motives as ways of realization of thematic “matter”.

Abstract:
The article reviewed the main cinematic techniques, themes and motives used by J. Val del Omar for the lyrical conceptualization of the image of the city in the film “Vibrations of Granada” (1935) and analyzed their semantics. It demonstrates how the documentary narrative splits into pure representation and an area of allegorical tension, supported by key metaphors as sources of expanded motives. The metaphor of the Garden of Eden represents Granada as an image of Paradise; the use of the motive of water as the main element of drama contributes to the actualization of philosophical semantics and in combination with the green filter through which the film is projected, forms the fabulous-onyric character of the narrative; the visual motive of verticality created by camera angles, editing, etc, acquires the axiological meaning of the city's spiritual aspiration upward. It is revealed that the film’s style was influenced by the optics of cinematic impressionism, the R. Flaherty’s documental aesthetics and the poetic images of F. Garcia Lorca. This artistic program permits consideration of the film as an ethnographically and existentially accentuated version of the films of the “city symphony” of the 1920s and 1930s.

Cherkasova, E. A. "The uncompleted cycle about poetry as theurgy in Vl. Solovyov’s lyrical poetry of the second half of the 1890s." Solov’evskie issledovaniya, no. 4 (December 15, 2020): 20–33. http://dx.doi.org/10.17588/2076-9210.2020.4.020-033.

Abstract:
The author examines the inter-connections of subjects and motives in ten poems which Solovyov wrote in the second half of the 1890s. The method of motive analysis shows that those works bear the mark of a verse unity making an uncompleted cycle. It appears that Solovyov’s poems during that period can be related not only to his aesthetic and philosophical works but also to the lyrical pieces of earlier poets. Thus, it is shown that ten poems belong to the tradition of A.A. Fet, K.K. Sluchevsky, A.N. Maykov, V.A. Zhukovsky and Ya.P. Polonsky. It is suggested to call this uncompleted cycle “Poetry as theurgy”. A brief review is proposed of the aesthetic and philosophical ideas which are important to understand the general theme canvass of the cycle. The common theme and cross-cutting motives of twelve poems forming that cycle are defined. It is suggested to consider that the lyrical mystery theme is common to all the poems of that cycle. It is shown that the prophetic motive and images/symbols of nature and of the poet as prophet can be traced throughout the whole of the cycle. The conclusion is that Solovyov has created a series of poems which, through their themes and motives, prolong and complete each other, thus offering an uncompleted cycle of poetry as theurgy. From the point of view of its structure and content, that cycle is typical of the literary epoch when it was composed, being a continuation of the classical tradition while at the same time creating a new tradition, that of the symbolists.

Niemczyk, Jerzy, Aleksandra Sus, Kamil Borowski, Bartosz Jasiński, and Katarzyna Jasińska. "The Dominant Motives of Mergers and Acquisitions in the Energy Sector in Western Europe from the Perspective of Green Economy." Energies 15, no. 3 (January 31, 2022): 1065. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/en15031065.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the research, the results of which are used in this publication, was to identify the motives for mergers and acquisitions in the energy sector after the introduction of green economy elements in Western Europe. The mentioned region is the group of countries where changes related to the move to green energy are most visible (in addition to some countries from other regions, such as Singapore, New Zealand, or countries of the Arabian Peninsula). The research assumed the hypothesis that over the years since the Paris Conference the themes of mergers and acquisitions have changed from motives close to the views related to energy generation in traditional systems (black energy in large, monopolistic systems) to motives close to green energy (the research hypothesis). This was confirmed in the research, as business risk diversification (defined as diversification of the power sources from black to green) was the most popular M&A motive. In addition to emphasizing the direction of changes in the M&A motives, the authors of this study decided to check whether since 2015 (when the Paris Conference was organized) the motives behind the M&A transactions conducted by companies operating in the electrical energy generation sector have changed, making their motives close to the green energy dominant in Western Europe. Apart from verification of the abovementioned hypothesis, the aim of the research was to check whether there are any characteristic directions of changes in M&A motives across companies from particular Western European countries. The motives are changing from positional approaches to motives closer to resource approaches (green economy). The research used a critical analysis of the literature on the subject, a study that used desk research based on openly available sources and our own analytical tool developed for the needs of this analysis, which is the transformation of the concept of analysis of the M&A motives proposed in K. Borowski’s research: “The strategic development of the technology companies. The mergers and acquisitions perspective”.

Abstract:
Antonio Carlos Gomes (1836-1896) is considered one of the most important Brazilian composers and was the first New World composer whose work was accepted in Europe. His opera Fosca, though, was never discussed in depth and should be recognized as an important work in the history of the nineteenth century Italian opera for its skillful use of themes and motives. The Brazilian composer and musicologist Mario de Andrade presented a study of the principal themes in 1936, in commemoration of the centennial of Carlos Gomes' birth, but there is no record of a thorough study that shows the magnitude of Carlos Gomes' application of his motivic and thematic technique in this work.In this document, the author identifies the principal themes and motives, and demonstrates how the composer systematically used them to enhance the drama and lend coherence to the work as a whole. Gomes, in Fosca, used the technique to such extent that every major character in the opera has a minimum of one theme related to him or her. The leading role Fosca has many themes to represent her different feelings throughout the opera. There are also themes representing specific feelings between two people, and themes related to the chorus as well. Gomes uses his themes to contribute to the drama as active psychological elements and not simply as ornamentation. The recurring themes in Fosca are easily heard and recognized, but this does not mean that Gomes used them in a rudimentary or merely mechanical manner. Gomes' simplicity proves to be a useful tool in ensuring musical and dramatic continuity, offering us an idea of his broader goal as a musical dramatist.

Abstract:
In the contemporary world that undergoes constant changes, theatre is changing with certain pace as well. It is only natural as it is an integrant, inseparable part of the society and its make-up. New theatre groups are being established ? some of them last longer and turn into steady regulars on the stage, others are more short-lived due to a variety of factors (art, financial or personal ones). The development of the groups in question could help us outline some of the current tendencies in the theatre world and could contribute to getting a broader and fuller understanding of it.

Abstract:

Chang, Chian-Yeun. "Towards a culturally identifiable architecture." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39934.

Full text
Abstract:
This study proposes a systematic approach for investigators to judge how architecture of a given cultural group can be considered as culturally identifiable. More specifically, it proposes the steps in unveiling the relationships between chosen core elements of cultural distinctness and various design patterns. The suggested sources of core elements are political, social/behavioral, and economic influences on architectural design and approaches to create architectural signs. It is presupposed that a design pattern is considered culturally identifiable when important core elements are communicated via noticeable signs. The communication is perceived from a semiotic analogy of architectural signs, whereby the importance of one core element over the other is identified by the investigator through research into the cultural context under study. A case study on China's architecture is presented to illustrate these steps and test the proposed hypotheses. The steps are so designed that testing the relevance of core elements to architectural signs is essential. Forty-six sample buildings selected from China served as stimulus materials in the case study. These building patterns were rated as different types of signs on the basis of the core elements elicited from China's present-day culture. These buildings also were judged in a survey by forty-four Chinese students and their spouses at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University who represent samples of overseas Chinese laypersons. The findings show that survey results deviated significantly from the semiotic results as laypersons considered traditional architecture most representative of Chinese identity. The semiotic results show that culturally identifiable designs are the hybrid forms of traditional and modern architecture. Most laypersons ignored the relationships between their perception of distinct identity in architecture and core elements of economic meanings and sign-creation approaches. This deviation implies a significant cultural lag in perceiving distinct identity between professionals and laypersons, and led to modification of the presupposed hierarchical importance of core elements. Through the case study and findings, this research illustrates the procedure by which investigators can determine from a specific range of cultural elements the most effective means of communication of identity. It enables the inclusion of core elements of popular culture in comparing various design patterns and in differentiating built forms of one culture from that of others. The study ends with the factors and suggestions that are related to communication of Chinese identity in architecture.

Abstract:
This interdisciplinary thesis investigates the Action Painting movement using rhetorical theories and models with the intent of producing a higher level of understanding of the paintings and increasing their approachability. A brief history of nonobjective painting, the technique of automatism, and the Action Painting movement is given. Following this, the semiotic character of the visual elements within Action Paintings is discussed and their behavior catalogued through descriptive analysis, using Kenneth Pike's theory of tagmemics. The work culminates in a comparison of painted gestures to conversational implicatures and guidelines are given for establishing meaningful and relevant dialogues with the paintings, presupposing the importance of an intangible context as defined by the reconstruction of authorial intent and anticipated readership.

The article reveals the characteristic features of Sylvia Plath`s short prose based on the analysis of stories “Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams”, “The Daughters of Blossom Street”, “Mary Ventura and The Ninth Kingdom” and others: the major themes of loneliness and lack of connection, autobiographical motives, the intensity of narrative, fragmentation and metaphoricity.

Abstract:
In the literature of the last decade, new motives have appeared, which form “value centers” in the “ideological outlook” of modernity, to use the words by M. Bakhtin. They define the problems of modern Russian literature. But turning to them does not show acquisitions, but rather an intensive search, the need for which is great. Literature as a sphere of social consciousness records the dramatic lack of certain existential landmarks of modern man. The article contains an attempt to identify some of these value centers that can provide modern man with social and ontological guidelines. Among them are the problem of time, historical themes, nostalgia, and the search for the image of a modern leader.

The focus of this paper addresses themes of neoliberalism, university commercialization and marketing, architecture school identity formation as a representational practice through social media, and the role of image curation and its production in contemporary architecture. This paper emerged after hearing the phrase ‘buyer’s motive,’ which explained what schools needed to consider for attracting students to their programs at a conference by Ruffalo Noel Levtiz on recruitment, marketing, and retention in higher education in the United States. The use of the word, ‘buyer’, instead of ‘student’, or ‘prospective student’, or ‘learner’ seemingly transformed the production of engaged education to its passive consumption.

Evaluation methods are many, and each teacher chooses the most suitable methods for his students. This article describes traditional evaluation methods, but also modern methods that include the use of modern digital applications. Students more simply accept the use of applications that make assessment in the form of a game, which encourages them to be more attentive, but simultaneously and responsible towards the themes learned. As a conclusion, combining traditional and modern digital methods increases the effectiveness of learning and motivates students towards better learning.

Abstract:
The fascination with oriental decorative and applied objects contributed to the emergence of a new artistic trend in European culture called chinoiserie. As a result of the synthesis of Chinese decorative iconography with European themes and motifs, the most diverse interpretations of Chinoiserie appeared in the interior decoration. Taking into account their wide variability, the author examines the most common artistic genres of chinoiserie in the architectural and decorative design of interiors with reference to Russian and French examples.

Hillestad, Torgeir Martin. The Metapsychology of Evil: Main Theoretical Perspectives Causes, Consequences and Critique. University of Stavanger, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.31265/usps.224.

Abstract:
The purpose of this text or dissertation is to throw some basic light on a fundamental problem concerning manhood, namely the question of evil, its main sources, dynamics and importance for human attitudes and behaviour. The perspective behind the analysis itself is that of psychology. Somebody, or many, may feel at bit nervous by the word “evil” itself. It may very well be seen as too connected to religion, myth and even superstition. Yet those who are motivated to lose oneself in the subject retain a deep interest in human destructiveness, malevolence and hate, significant themes pointing at threatening prospects for mankind. The text is organized or divided into four main ordinary chapters, the three first of them organized or divided into continuous and numbered sections. A crucial point or question is of cause how to define evil itself. It can of cause be done both intentional, instrumental and by consequence. Other theorists however have stated that the concept of evil exclusively rests on a myth originated in the Judean-Christian conception of Satan and ultimate evil. This last argument presupposes evil itself as non-existent in the real rational world. It seems however a fact that most people attach certain basic meaning to the concept, mainly that it represents ultimately bad and terrible actions and behaviour directed toward common people for the purpose of bringing upon them ultimate pain and suffer. However, there is no room for essentialism here, meaning that we simply can look “inside” some original matter to get to know what it “really” is. Rather, a phenomenon gets its identity from the constituted meaning operating within a certain human communities and contexts loaded with intentionality and inter-subjective meaning. As mentioned above, the concept of evil can be interpreted both instrumental and intentional, the first being the broadest of them. Here evil stands for behaviour and human deeds having terrifying or fatal consequences for subjects and people or in general, regardless of the intentions behind. The intentional interpretation however, links the concept to certain predispositions, characteristics and even strong motives in subjects, groups and sometimes political systems and nations. I will keep in mind and clear the way for both these perspectives for the discussion in prospect. This essay represents a psychological perspective on evil, but makes it clear that a more or less complete account of such a psychological view also should include a thorough understanding or integration of some basic social and even biological assumptions. However, I consider a social psychological position of significant importance, especially because in my opinion it represents some sort of coordination of knowledge and theoretical perspectives inherent in the subject or problem itself, the main task here being to integrate perspectives of a psychological as well as social and biological kind. Since humans are essential social creatures, the way itself to present knowledge concerning the human condition, must be social of some sort and kind, however not referring to some kind of reductionism where social models of explanation possess or holds monopoly. Social and social psychological perspectives itself represents parts of the whole matter regarding understanding and explanation of human evil. The fact that humans present, or has to represent themselves as humans among other humans, means that basically a social language is required both to explain and describe human manners and ways of being. This then truly represents its own way or, more correctly, level or standard of explanation, which makes social psychology some sort of significant, though not sufficient. More substantial, the vision itself of integrating different ontological and theoretical levels and objects of science for the purpose of manifesting or make real a full-fledged psychological perspective on evil, should be considered or characterized a meta-psychological perspective. The text is partially constructed as a review of existing theories and theorists concerning the matter of evil and logically associated themes such as violence, mass murder, genocide, antisocial behaviour in general, aggression, hate and cruelty. However, the demands of making a theoretical distinction between these themes, although connected, is stressed. Above all, an integral perspective combining different scientific disciplines is aimed at.
