Abstract:
This article explores some features of an international ‘third way’ movement which, in theory and in practice, impacts on centuries-old traditions of communal life and the belief in autonomous agency – traditions which motivate individual participation in society and underpin liberal conceptions of education. The article uncovers some of the hopes and aspirations of third way discourse by examining the work of one of its leading proponents, Anthony Giddens, and reviewing related social policy implementation in the United States, Britain and especially New Zealand. The following are argued as problematic for education: the nature of ‘community’ that underpins commitment to third way values; the way in which individual subjectivity is shaped in response to that community; and the diminishing of the social space in which such changes might be meaningfully critiqued. With a particular focus on New Zealand's policy environment, the article argues that third way is an intensification of neoliberalism under the rhetoric of social democracy, and concludes with a vision of a different kind of third way – not a singular path to a predefined destination, but a journey that embraces difference and antagonism as an essential feature of social life.

Abstract:
Aquinas’s Five Ways are often presented as standard cosmological arguments for God’s existence. They tend to be anthologized and presented independently of the metaphysical thought that informs them. Thus, when Aquinas deploys technical metaphysical issues in his articulation of the ways, the contemporary reader may have trouble interpreting them correctly. This is particularly the case when Aquinas uses terminology familiar to a contemporary reader that nevertheless should be understood within the context of Aquinas’s own metaphysical thought. The Third Way is particularly challenging in this respect since it trades on modal notions that are familiar within a post-Leibnizian philosophical context but do not carry the same philosophical connotations. With that in mind, I propose to present a reading of the Third Way that is rooted within Aquinas’s own metaphysical thought and is defensible as an argument for God’s existence.

Abstract:
As I write (Spring 2012) I am aware that I have been a member of the Mathematical Association for fifty years. I joined during the annual conference in 1962 when Dr Combridge was the main figure in the society. The highlight was a session at the conference (at King's College, London) by Geoffrey Matthews showing how matrices might be introduced into the school curriculum. Some treated this as hilarious, others as a signpost to the future. My friend Frank Budden and I regarded it as a premature ploy, which, we thought, might not tum out to be such a good idea. We subsequently wrote a successful book Mathematics through Geometry (1964) arguing in detail why the modem mathematics revolution—which was then gathering pace—might end in tears. We identified spatial imagination as the heartland of mathematics, and contrasted it with a denial of spatial imagination in the abstract calculi which were all the vogue at the time.

Abstract:
The article focuses on François Perroux’s work at the second half of the 1940s, at the moment when he redefines his third-way ideas in terms of a liberal interventionist perspective. The point of departure is an interpretation of Perroux’s intellectual trajectory during the interwar period, as a way of understanding how his investigations in the field of national income and planning finally became an essential part of his third-way perspectives, previously formulated in corporatist terms but partially reshaped in the immediate postwar period. Particular attention is paid to the institutional work led by him on national accounts in the first years of the Institut de Science Économique Appliquée. Refusing to analyze Perroux’s contribution in terms of eclecticism, the article attempts to critically illuminate complementarities and continuities in the author’s analytical framework between the interwar and postwar periods.

Abstract:
“The Third Way” concept is still widespread all over the world. Growing socio-economic uncertainty makes the authors revise the concept. In the course of discussion with other authors they introduce a synergetic vision of the problem. That means in the first place changing a linear approach to the economic research for a non-linear one.
