Lee, Yu-Kang. "The Third Way : a Taiwanese case?" Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24817.

Full text
Abstract:
The Third Way started as an Anglo-American ideological and political venture. It was soon followed by major European leaders, among other worldwide government heads of state, who sought to boost their electoral support and address a resolution to the consequences of globalisation. Despite criticism by academics and commentators for lacking content and substance, the Third Way appeared to be rather successful in recruiting allies, especially among Western democracies. Unlike other nations in East Asia, Taiwan is involved with this arguably prominent political project of the 21st century. A comprehensive review on the global Third Way/Middle Way debate centred on its historical importance and worldwide influences as well as on the left versus right issues is presented to provide background knowledge on the Third Way. By reviewing the policy-learning/transfer, lesson-drawing, and ideological diffusion literature, the theoretical basis of this study is provided. The discussion focuses on President Chen Sui-bian’s reasoning behind the adoption of this Anglo-American ideology and how it was adapted to correspond with Taiwan’s social and political environment. Taiwan as an example of lesson drawing prior to the Third Way is examined through the emergence of a modern Chinese state. The previous ‘Third Way’ cases of Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek are regarded as significant examples in the art of synthesising Eastern and Western ideologies which illustrate the historical substance of political learning and diffusion during the modernisation of China. In order to understand the politics of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government, the language of the New Taiwan Middle Way is analysed. Through an examination of a wide range of political speeches, and texts from President Chen and his allies, the rhetoric of the New Taiwan Middle Way is uncovered to reveal its true meaning. Since the left and right are not so salient in Taiwan as they are in Europe, independence and unification issues replace and left vs. right debate. Analysis of social welfare development in Taiwan during the 1990s and forward is made, with particular interest focusing on whether the unprecedented case of the DPP government based on the Third Way ideas is associated with a new perspective towards welfare development.

Schreiber, Leon Amos. "The third way in Brazil? Lula's presidency examined." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/17971.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study identifies the way in which Brazil was able to achieve significant economic and social development during the Presidency of Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva from 2003 to 2010. The element which makes the achievement of this development extremely interesting is the fact that it was engineered by a traditionally radical Leftist party, the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT – Workers’ Party) within the context of the globalized world economy. Throughout much of its existence, the PT has called for a radical socialist transformation of Brazilian society. However, once it came to power, it not only rejected radical positions, but acquiesced fully with the constraints placed upon it by global capital. Thus, in addition to describing the process of development in Brazil, this study also attempts to account for the way in which it was achieved. This is done by postulating that the Lula (as he is commonly referred to) administration was successful in solidifying Brazilian economic fundamentals, as well as in significantly reducing poverty and inequality in one of the most unequal societies in the world, because it adopted Third Way economic and social policies. It is argued that, even though there were few clear indications from the government that it regarded itself as following the Third Way, a practical examination of Lula’s economic and social policies indicate that they overwhelmingly conform to the prescripts of the Third Way.

Williams, Tamara Lynn. "Third route kids : a new way of conceptualizing the adult third culture kid experience." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43936.

Full text
Abstract:
The current conceptualization of Adult Third Culture Kids (TCKs) is challenged and reconceptualised as Third Route Kids (TRKs) through both an extensive analysis of the current literature on TCKs and through an ethnographic study of four adult TCKs. The study involved utilizing thematic analysis of focus groups with four TCKs. Six themes were identified: The Problematics of Being Asked Where You are From, Relationship with Self, Relationship with Others, Relationship with Society, TCK Culture, and Global Awareness. These findings are integrated with current research on TCKs. They also challenge the current conceptualization of culture and cultural sensitivity that is utilized in counselling psychology. Suggestions for future research are also made.

Hewitt, Andy. "Art and counter-publics in Third Way cultural policy." Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2012. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/5679/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the UK, over the past decade, the rhetoric of ‘Third Way’ governance informed cultural policy. The research sets out how the agenda for cultural policy converged with priorities for economic and social policy, in policies implemented by Arts Council England, in the commissioning of publicly funded visual art and within culture-led regeneration. Hence visual art production was further instrumentalized for the purposes of marketization and privatization. The practice-based research examines the problems issues and contingencies for visual art production in this context. Public sphere theory is used to examine ideas of publics and publicness in Third Way cultural policy context, in state cultural institutions and programming. Using Jürgen Habermas’ conception of the public sphere, the research proposes that cultural policy functioned as ‘steering media’, as publicity for the state to produce social cohesion and affirmative conceptions of the social order, i.e. the management of publics. In contrast, public sphere theory is concerned with societal processes of opinion formation, of selfforming, deliberating and rival publics. The research also applies theories of the public sphere to the theories of art and participation associated with socially-engaged art practice - theories that articulate art in relation to its publics. While socially-engaged artists have produced new modes of art practice that have shifted arts ontology, the research points to how Third Way cultural policy was quick to seize upon socially-engaged art for its own agenda. Public sphere theory informed the strategies and tactics of the Freee art collective (Dave Beech, Andy Hewitt, Mel Jordan) in the production of publicly-funded artworks. The artworks were a means to test the hypothesis and to find evidence by intervening in Third Way cultural policy with alternative ideas. Freee’s public spherian art proposes new modes of participative art to counter Third Way cultural policy - a ‘counter-public art’.

Alejandro, González-Lario. "Zainichi beyond the third way : towards a transnational identity." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/19480/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the end of the Pacific War, the existence of the Korean minority in Japan (Zainichi Koreans) has been trapped in a monolithic dichotomy of Koreanness and Japaneseness. In this situation, Zainichi Koreans faced the dilemma of whether to become full citizens of Japanese society through naturalisation and abandon their Korean ethnicity or to maintain either of their Korean legal affiliations (colonial Korean registration, Chôsen register, or South Korean citizenship) and their status of foreign resident as a means of claiming their Koreanness. In the late 1970s, Kim Tong-Myung proposed an alternative to the monolithic dichotomy in his articulation of the ‘Third Way’, which aimed at transcending nationalist discourses by advocating a new subjectivity for the younger generations as simply Zainichi. This study questions the Third Way discourse by criticising its failure to address the actual diversity within the Zainichi community. Furthermore, through the examination of a new set of empirical data collected from qualitative research methods involving participant observation as well as semi-structured and in-depth interviews, this work presents new insights into the question of the Zainichi identity. Focusing on the impact of ethnic education in the formation of an ethnic identity in third and fourth generation Zainichi individuals, this study analyses the similarities and divergences in the identity formation process of twelve Zainichi participants from four different educational backgrounds: Chôsen schools, South Korea-oriented Kenkoku school, extracurricular Minzoku Gakkyû courses, and Japanese public schools. In addition, the analysis of participants’ interpretations and conceptualisations of their own existence with respect to Japan and the Korean Peninsula permits the elaboration of a new theory that highlights the dynamism and the fluidity of Zainichi identities, which overcome traditional, nationalist discourses and seek new ways of transnational belonging.

Abstract:
In 1922, the Bolshevik government expelled some 160 prominent intellectuals from Russia. Numbered among these were many of the leaders of the Religious Renaissance which had flourished since the turn of the century. They advocated a "third way": neither for the Tsarist regime nor the Bolsheviks; neither for Capitalism nor Communism; neither for Materialism nor Idealism; rather, they promoted personalist, spiritual development (Godmanhood ), Christian economic ethics (Sobornost'), and a path to knowledge informed by reason, but guided by faith (Religious-Philosophy ). Forced to join the Russian diaspora, these religious philosophers continued to advance their movement with the help of the Young Men's Christian Association. Largely at the initiative of Nikolai Berdyaev (1874--1948), they also began to interact with the French intellectual milieu in Paris in order to develop inter-confessional and cultural understandings. Although Russian religious-philosophy suffered a certain decline following World War Two, many of their writings had returned to the USSR. As Soviet intellectuals discovered these works, they gradually began to revolt against dialectical materialism, and aspire to recover the religious-philosophical tradition. In 1988, this Return was at last made possible, and religious-philosophy has been enjoying a second renaissance which continues unabated today.

McCafferty, Patricia. "Working the 'third way' : New Labour, employment relations and Scottish devolution." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2004. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1537/.

Full text
Abstract:
Labour’s election victory in 1997 was heralded as a new era, the dawn of a Third Way, a novel attempt to chart a unique political course overcoming the perceived limitations of both New Right and Old Labour. In this thesis, I explore that era of New Labour generally and, in particular, the impact of the Third Way on working lives. Key to my analysis is New Labour’s attempt to synthesise oppositional interests, in particular those of capital and labour. This involves a crucial rhetoric of flexibility, competitiveness and partnership. My research explores the rhetoric of New Labour in relation to the reality of this new force in power. It does this by: drawing out key features in the development of New Labour, especially its relation to Old Labour; examining central elements of New Labour ideology; arguing that Scotland should be seen as central to the transition from Old to New Labour; utilising a case study of industrial relations developments in a major electronics factory in the West of Scotland and, to a lesser extent, key developments in public sector employment. My main finding is that where New Labour’s ideology promises positive benefits, the form of its implication has negative impacts for workers. Since I take New Labour as a process, my thesis concludes with a more speculative exploration of possible future developments, both in relations to New Labour’s role in them, and their possible impact on the New Labour project.

Abstract:
AbstractThe aim of this essay is to identify English out-of-school activities among students with an immigrant background to find out to what extent English out-of-school activities have an impact on the students’ results at the National Test of English. An additional aim is to find out if English out-of-school activities are a way of integration outwards or vice versa if the lack of English out-of-school activities is a sign of integration inwards. The present study is based upon a questionnaire with closed questions, which was filled in by 54 third graders enrolled in the Child and Recreation Programme. The informants are divided into two groups, one of which is a control group of native Swedish students. The study showed a tendency that students with an immigrant background who are not involved in English out-of-school activities obtain lower grades in English and that they integrate inwards by using their native language on the Internet, listening to music and watching films from their home country. Furthermore, the study showed that there is a slight difference between native Swedish students and students with an immigrant background as regards computer habits. Keywords: English out-of-school activities, integration, third language acquisition, informal learning, computer habits, National Test of English, the third culture

Turk, Duygu. "A Critical Evaluation Of The Third Way And Its Reflections On Turkish Politics." Master's thesis, METU, 2005. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12606562/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to provide a critical evaluation of the Third Way and its reflections on Turkish politics. The Third Way emerged in the late 1990s with a claim to provide an alternative both to the old social democracy of welfare state period and to neo-liberalism. Based on a specific account of the radically changed world, the Third Way has maintained that the new conditions have rendered the old conceptualizations, as well as the old political positions, invalid. In this sense, this thesis argues that the re-definitions of the state and society relationship, the citizenship and the global order that the Third Way theory pursue have become the hegemonic notions of the current political context. It also claims that the Third Way can be considered as a product of the common attempts maintained by various approaches to complement the competitive market mechanism with social solidarity based on a socially inclusive strategy. The reflections of the Third Way on current Turkish political atmosphere are assessed in the thesis as further proofs of the hegemonic position that the Third Way occupies.

Holmes, Alison Ruth. "Third way and new liberalism : responding to globalisation at the domestic/international frontier." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2005. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1779/.

Full text
Abstract:
The self-identified intellectual currents known in Britain as New Liberalism and the Third Way can be seen as domestic political responses to two periods of 'globalisation' - understood here as a specific type of transformational change occasioned by simultaneous technological, economic, social and political shift. The resulting changes in perceptions of time, speed and distance alter political and popular understandings of relations between local, national and international, and between society, state and economy. It is also indicative of a shift in the development of the state; from the 'premodern' to the 'modern' in the first timeframe, and the 'modern' to a new stage that could be termed 'global' more recently. New Liberalism and the Third Way were both developed as elite-led, domestic, synthesising political philosophies in the face of an electoral threat brought about by societal change and external economic challenge. These examples suggest that the current globalisation debate is flawed as it treats as a single phenomenon different aspects of change and fails to recognise the implications of the similarities between these two periods. There is no suggestion that there are only two periods of change only that systemic change is qualitatively different. International Relations as an academic discipline is responding inadequately because of a reluctance to overcome the tendency to downplay links between domestic and international spheres and levels of state development. By comparing these specific periods of transformation and their political ideologies in the British context, this thesis will explore the relationship between international and domestic political ideology at times of such change and suggest that the result is a specific kind of transitional politics born of both innovation and necessity. Finally, while this kind of political engagement has been neglected by international relations, it may prove to be evidence of stages of development in the state.

Abstract:
The passive reliance on ideas to spontaneously emerge within companies is today replaced with more active and continuous ideation management that embraces employees from different functions and knowledge-domains within the company to create and develop ideas. A frequently observed feature in the active management of ideation is the reliance on collaboration and competition mechanisms. These mechanisms use the strength of enabling people to working together towards a shared interest (collaboration) and the power of enabling people to outperform each other in submitting the best idea (competition). The existing research on collaboration and competition in ideation is found inconclusive about their effects as collaboration is stated to both enhance and hamper performance, and as competition is claimed to both drive and reduce performance in ideation. This constitutes a limitation to the management of ideation as it reduces the ability to actively and purposefully guide ideation through a deliberate use of the two mechanisms. The aim of this thesis is to investigate collaboration and competition mechanisms in firm-internal ideation. A multi-methodological approach has been deployed using three different studies: a multiple case study, a survey, and an experiment. This has allowed for the phenomenon of ideation to be studied using different perspectives and for the individual results to be triangulated. The empirical data has been acquired from both industry and experiments with university students. The conducted research has revealed that the inconsistencies on the effects from the two mechanisms are possible to understand and resolve by applying a more detailed level of analysis. When competition is decomposed into components of individual- and group competition, it is found that individual competition drives idea quantity and that it hampers collaboration, whereas group competition instead is found to induce collaboration and to nurture idea quality. This indicates that competition can be used to manage levels of collaboration in ideation, thereby bridging the two mechanisms. This thesis further presents that the individual effects from each of the mechanisms are complementary to each other. This implies that the effect from each mechanism is retained when combined with the other mechanisms, and that the combined effect is equal to, or even greater than, the sum of the individual effects. This combined use is found to drive both ideation efficiency and motivation, and is offering management an interesting third alternative, out of the two mechanisms, of how firm-internal ideation can be managed in a more effective and efficient manner. An analytical framework is included, presenting the interrelationships between the mechanisms, motivation, ideation behavior and the ideation performance.

Abstract:
Historians consider the years between World War I and World War II to be a period of decline for German America. This dissertation complicates that argument by applying a transnational framework to the history of German immigration to the United States, particularly the period between 1919 and 1939. The author argues that contrary to previous accounts of that period, German migrants continued to be invested in the homeland through a variety of public and private relationships that changed the ways in which they thought about themselves as Germans and Americans. By looking at migration through a transnational lens, the author also moves beyond older conventions that merely saw Germanness in language and culture. Instead, the author suggests a framework that investigates race, class, consumerism, gender and citizenship and finds evidence that German migrants not only utilized their heritage to define their Americanness but that German immigrant values, views and norms did indeed fundamentally shape American national identity.

Full text
Abstract:
Many security systems employing different methods have been proposed to protect buried oil pipelines transporting petroleum products from the well head via the refinery to: depots and other receiving stations. Currently there is a security gap in the monitoring of these buried pipelines in real time and in keeping them protected from third party interference. This thesis addresses the problem of monitoring these systems by developing an automated image analysis system with the aid of a low-cost multisensory Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for monitoring of buried pipeline right-of-way (ROW). The method used in this research is based on the identification of threat objects of interest from the video frame sequences of the pipeline right-of-way acquired by the UAV. This is achieved by training the system to recognise objects of interest using trained correlation filters. To determine the geographical location of detected objects, the Video frame sequences captured by the UAV platform were ortho-rectified to form ortho-images which were then mosaicked to form a seamless Digital Surface Model (DSM) covering the test area using a photogrammetry model. The DSM formed from the mosaicking of ortho-images is then emerged with a digital globe for geo-referencing of detected objects. Experiments were carried out on a test field located in United Kingdom and Nigeria, where video and telemetry data were collected, then processed using the techniques created in this research. The results demonstrated that the developed correlation filter was able to detect objects of interest despite the distortions that come with the object image, due to the fact that the expected distortion was compensated for using the training images. When compared with the 6 control points in the digital globe the accuracy of the two-dimension DSM gave a misalignment error of between 2 and 3 metres.

Weltman, David. "The Third Way in English local politics : a discursive analysis of the talk of councillors." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2000. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/34225.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to study the current historical era, when dominant political discourses are suggesting that ideology and ideological politics belong to the past, via a focus on the talk of local politicians. An ideological analysis of councillors' discussion of the current and past political situation in the council and further afield, and their own relation to it, is conducted. In this way, the discursive means through which the end-of-ideology era is practically realised, are highlighted. Of special relevance to this analysis is the Third Way agenda espoused by New Labour and its allies. This recommends the replacement of the traditional agonistic politics of left and right with a consensual, non-political politics. The thesis considers the wider historical conditions and effectiveness of this theory, including its association with the generalised, power-assisted process of political closure.

Kolarz, Peter. "The politics of Anthony Giddens’s social theory : utopian realism and late modern social democracy beyond the Third Way." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2011. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/7373/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis takes a new approach to understanding the works of Anthony Giddens, specifically his theory of structuration, his analysis of late modernity and his political project, the Third Way. It will show that the creation of a reflexive, empowered, late-modern self is not, as a face value reading of his work would suggest, a social reality he describes, but rather a normative goal, with significant political implications. This thesis will trace this goal, as well as its theoretical background to the theory of structuration and to his analysis of late modernity, and will show that his social theory depends strongly on the creation of a political project aimed at realising the creation of this late-modern self. It will also show what the basic characteristics of such a project need to be, in order for his work to be consistent and empirically sound. This thesis will then critique his Third Way, based on those characteristics, and having shown that these are not fulfilled by the Third Way, will then show that this disjuncture is best explained by the non-adversarial character of the Third Way, and provide an outline of an alternative political project based on Giddens's work. This thesis offers a contribution to the critical literature on Anthony Giddens, and also to the literature now emerging, which tries to understand the failures and demise of the Third Way as practiced by governments in the UK and elsewhere, as well as to the debates about what shape centre-left politics in the late modern age might take. This thesis points out some key weaknesses of Giddens's work, most notably a significant disjuncture between his Third Way and previous work, whilst at the same time showing how his previous work can be used successfully to construct centre-left political platforms quite distinct from his Third Way, and rooted in an empirically justified and consistent sociological analysis.

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with the Roman Catholic Order founded by Saint Dominic in 1215. The Order encompasses Friar Preachers, Christian Brothers, Active Religious Sisters, Contemplative Sisters and the Lay Dominicans. Saint Dominic was instrumental in defeating heresy in southern France, which had been brought about by former Christians alienated from the Church and its teachings. During this period, Saint Dominic and his helpers were threatened and abused for challenging heresy and for reconverting former heretics to Christianity. In 1207, Saint Dominic and his helpers met a group of ladies and converted them back to their former ascetic lives as Catholic nuns. The land and shelter acquired for them adjacent to the Church of Saint Mary of Prouille was to become the first established convent for Dominican nuns. Saint Dominic continued his preaching and teaching as the Dominican Order developed, the first English Priory being established in Oxford on 15th August 1221. Within a century, fifty Priories had been set up in the United Kingdom alone. Prior to his death in 1221, Saint Dominic had been instrumental in the establishment of the Rule and Constitution of the Order, which covered liturgy and asceticism and dealt with aspects concerning the government of the Order. The Rule and Constitution of the Order still applies in today. However, the last three decades have seen the Order facing a crisis with continuing falling numbers of entrants from the western World. This dissertation examines the possible causes and effects of such a decline, along with the impact this has had on its present and future continuation as seen by the Dominicans themselves. The author also explores a possible solution to relieve the crisis.

Abstract:
This essay is about the change of the Swedish party Socialdemokraterna (S). It is a very current subject, since many political newspapers write about that the party moves into the political middle. Apparently the party is not what it used to be and that is what this essay will explore and analyze. My purpose is to explore what ideal type answers best to the Social democrats change. The chosen ideal types are neo-liberalism, reformist socialism and the third way. And the materials I use are political programs from 1990, 2001 and 2013. To achieve my purpose I’ve chosen two different methods: 1. Content analysis 2. Idea analysis. Each of them has been very useful and to combine them has proved efficient. The results of the content analysis show that the party in 2001 and 2013 is using a different vocabulary than in 1990. The results of the idea analysis are that the political program from 2013 show that some of the ideas are divergent. For example, a traditional social democratic value is that the working hours should be shorter. But in 2013, the party doesn’t suggest shorter working days and weeks.

This diploma thesis deals with the welfare state. The first chapter describes the characteristics of the welfare state and its possible different types. The second chapter is concerned with the historical background. The third chapter focuses on the relationship of the welfare state to the middle class and potentional risks which development of the middle class brings. Last, the fourth chapter elaborates one of the proposals for a reform of the welfare state. Specifically, it is focused on Gidden's Third way. This concept is first introduced, followed by critical responses, where a reader learns what above all bothers most opponents of this specific programme.

Abstract:
Sociologists, unlike economists or psychologists, generally do not perform practical Institutional roles in organized society. Most of them are employed as scholars and lecturers In academla, while only a minority are employed as 'applied sociologists' in business or public organizations; dealing only with narrow questions which interest their employers, which naturally confines them to their employers' perspective. Thus, according to the mainstream literature, their role is essentially technical, acting as 'methodologists', stripped almost entirely from their sociological qualities. However, academic sociologists do not necessarily remain mere producers of pure basic knowledge since a significant number of them have attempted to exert external influence and to advance practical improvements in accord with the findings of and within their fields of studies, which frequently involve engagement with fundamental theoretical questions. Such activities may be termed 'Public Sociology', following mainly C. W. Mills, Herbert Gans and Michael Burawoy. However, the criteria, the boundaries and the qualities of these activities have almost never been examined systematically before. This thesis constitutes an empirical investigation into the qualities of these practical activities among 25 Israeli university scholars with sociological orientation.

Abstract:
This study investigates the search for the third way in the history of German Christian Democracy. Today, in the United Kingdom, the 'third way' is seen as a new phenomenon, a synthesis of post-war belief in the welfare state and neo-liberal conservatism. Yet it insufficiently acknowledges that the origins of third way thinking, the marriage of social justice with free market economics, of individualism with collective responsibility, are found in the early philosophies of Catholic Social Theory and Protestant Social Ethical Teaching in Germany. This study shows that in the hundred years from the 1840s to the end of the 1940s, there were Catholic and Protestant socio-ethical thinkers and political reformists in Germany who attempted to bridge the philosophical differences between liberalism and socialism, to develop a socio-economic order based on Christian moral values. It will focus on the period 1945-1949, when the CDU was founded as the first interdenominational, Christian party. The study provides the first comprehensive account of the political debates in Christian democratic groups in the Soviet, British, French and American allied occupied zones, also giving equal attention to the contribution from the Protestant wing, alongside the more widely acknowledged role of Catholics in the birth of the CDU. It examines how Christian Democrats envisaged correcting the aberrations of German history, by uniting all social classes and Christian religions in one all-embracing Volkspartei, and transforming party politics from its earlier obsession with sectarian and ideological interests towards a more pragmatic 'third way' programme. The study argues that through the making of its ideology, the CDU modified the nation's understanding of its history, re-interpreted its traditions, and redefined the meaning and perception of established political philosophies. This reveals how the ambiguity of political terminology, and the flexible practice of 'third way' politics, were an invaluable political resource in the CDU's campaign for unity, ideological legitimisation and political power.

Abstract:
From the 1980&rsquo
s onwards a new conceptual framework which will be subsequently called neoliberalism has become hegemonic by transforming and redefining the common sense. In the midst of the world economic crisis in the 1970s which would bring the collapse of Keynesian paradigm, a new political culture promoting the superiority of market-based order has started to emerge. Subsequently during the 1980s, by establishing &lsquo
market-oriented society&rsquo
as the new dominant paradigm, neoliberal hegemony has realized furher seperation of &lsquo
economics&rsquo
from the &lsquo
politics.&rsquo
In this respect, regarding the implementation of neoliberal policies, Great Britain can be considered as a prime example. During the last three decades, political atmosphere of Great Britain has to a large extent been shaped under the influence of neoliberal hegemony that has engendered a significant paradigm shift in the country&rsquo
s political economy. Meanwhile in the rapidly changing political atmosphere of 1980&rsquo
s and 1990&rsquo
s, British Labour Party has also gone through a gradual ideological transformation that culminated in the emergence of New Labour. Despite its initial claim to novelty, since New Labour is itself an actor that is formed during the hegemony of neoliberalism, its possible affiliation with the neoliberal paradigm deserves attention. In this sense, in order to analyse its affiliation with the neoliberal hegemony, this thesis attempts to develop a discursive enquiry into the political economy of New Labour. Consequently, by relying on remarkable findings which indicate the commonalities between New Labour and neoliberalism, this thesis advocates that although being different from the initial neoliberal stance of &lsquo
Thatcherism&rsquo
, New Labour perpetuates neoliberal hegemony insofar it takes neoliberal political economy&rsquo
s basic premises as for granted.

Abstract:
This manuscript is a study of the Thirty-Third Infantry, United States Volunteers, a regiment that was recruited in Texas, the South, and the Midwest and was trained by officers experienced from the Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War. This regiment served as a front-line infantry unit and then as a constabulary force during the Philippine War from 1899 until 1901. While famous in the United States as a highly effective infantry regiment during the Philippine War, the unit's fame and the lessons that it offered American war planners faded in time and were overlooked in favor of conventional fighting. In addition, the experiences of the men of the regiment belie the argument that the Philippine War was a brutal and racist imperial conflict akin to later interventions such as the Vietnam War. An examination of the Thirty-Third Infantry thus provides valuable context into a war not often studied in the United States and serves as a successful example of a counterinsurgency.

Abstract:
This study aims to understand and explain World Bank&rsquo
s changing approach to poverty since 1990. Established as a development institution and as one of the leading members of development community, the World Bank has nearly turned out to be a poverty alleviation institution especially from late 1990s on. This change is a reflection of a process in which the Bank shapes its approach to poverty not only in accordance with its own goals but also in the framework of what happens in wider social, economic and political spheres of which the Bank is a part as a subject that both shapes and is shaped by them to a certain extent. Consequently, a remarkable change is observed in the Bank&rsquo
s approach, and this process of change is investigated in this study in two sub-periods that are characterized by ruptures in continuity. The first period more or less between 1990 and 1997 is characterized by the Bank&rsquo
s neoliberal approach to poverty, which mainly assumes poverty as a complementary element of structural adjustment programs in countries they are implemented. The second period from 1997 up to present is characterized, on the other hand, by a &ldquo
third way&rdquo
approach to poverty which mainly assumes poverty-as-social-exclusion as an indispensable central element of a renewed hegemonic project. In this study, the traces of these ruptures and the continuity in the Bank&rsquo
s approach are followed through their reflections on Turkey by making a close reading of the Bank&rsquo
s documents about poverty in Turkey.

Abstract: This dissertation discusses the social and space dynamics of Paraisopolis Slum, in Sao Paulo, located among mansions and high-level condominiums at the Morumbi burgh. We will study State, Civil Society and Third Sector's attitudes towards this dynamic, trying to relate these three agents. As the State reveals itself unable to supply all the needs of the population, the Third Sector, then, offers services which should be State's duty, like health and education. Civil Society has to ask for these services, offered either by the State or Third Sector. This substitution of the State occurs due to a neoliberal tendency of substitution of the State by the Market also in the sphere of public services. Tax reduction policies are offered to the companies, but these services will not be accessible to all the population, causing segregation. We will observe that in Paraisopolis there are many social projects being developed in order to improve its population's quality of life, but many times the citizens do not have an active participation on these projects and end up just making use of the services provided. There is no research to know which area needs more help. The companies, as a result, have a power upon the use of the territory much greater than the State, which should be in control. Therefore, Third Sector has been raising its activities in the country due to the State's growing absence. Such growth can be verified by the data shown in this paper. Through the field work performed it was possible to verify the physical conditions of the slum, like the site of the constructions and layout of the houses (brickwork or wood, one, two or three floors, etc.), the dwellers' reports and impressions about the place they live, the commercial area, the dynamic of people's moves in its interior and surroundings, the discussions inside the Paraisopolis' Multientity Forum, etc. Another point approached is Sao Paulo's urbanization and the arise of slums with an analysis of their localization in the city, the years they arouse and the difficulty of access to land and habitation by the poorest population, contributing to the horizontal occupation of the city

Abstract:
The dissertation "The Entrepreneurial Education Project of the Empreender Endeavor Institute: a study on public-private partnership presents as central theme the publicprivate relationship in education and its general objective is to analyze the content of the education proposal that bases the courses of entrepreneurship of Instituto Empreender Endeavor, promoted in partnership with public education institutions in Brazil. As for the methodology used to carry out the research, historical materialism represents the theoretical-methodological reference, and documentary analysis is the main tool, based on the work with primary and secondary sources. The theoretical framework of the present research starts from the crises of capitalism of 1970 and 2008 and the resulting process of restructuring the system, which presents Neoliberalism, Productive Restructuring, Globalization and the Third Way as strategies to overcome this framework. At the political-ideological level, both Neoliberalism and the Third Way present the reform of the State based on the mercantile logic as a quality standard, which has allowed the growth of the influence of the private sectors in the direction and execution of public policies, especially in the field social, such as education, which is the focus of this study. However, the neoliberal proposal consists of the broad process of privatization, since the Third Way privileges as a central element the performance of organizations related to the Third Sector. Constituents of this process, Productive Restructuring legitimized forms of work organization that served the interests of capital in crisis, with emphasis on Entrepreneurship, and Globalization enhanced the expansion of restructured capitalism through Networks. In this way, the redefinition of publicprivate boundaries has influenced the content of public education, since the Network of Social Entrepreneurs linked to the Third Sector, such as Instituto Empreender Endeavor, which establishes partnerships with public institutions of education, define the educational content offered to the population. The influence exerted by these private institutions in the public field of education constitutes the problem of this study, which suggests the following question: can the content of the education proposed by the Instituto Empreender Endeavor, through entrepreneurship courses offered in partnership with institutions education, have implications for the democratization of education? In the development of the research it was verified that entrepreneurship dialogues with all the characteristic strategies of the process of capitalist restructuring, contributing to ensure hegemony and consequent reproduction of the system. That is to say, its proposal articulates, at the same time, the apassivamento of the individuals who, faced with the context of economic and social crisis, begin to individually seek the competences demanded by the market and assume the risks of starting their own business to guarantee their survival. In this sense, it is concluded that the entrepreneurship courses of the Instituto Empreender Endeavor promoted in partnership with public institutions of Brazilian education contribute to the deterioration of the principles of a democratic education, providing a single path, the adaptation of the subjects to the demands of the capitalist market, through the incorporation of socio-emotional competences to undertake their own business, a reality that, for most Brazilian entrepreneurs, means the precariousness of living conditions.

Abstract:
This thesis undertakes a comparison of the discursive strategies of New Labour and the German SPD at the turn of the twenty-first century, when both parties engaged in a discourse of the Third Way in order to win over ‘the middle ground of the electorate'.Approaching the two discourses with an interdisciplinary set of analytical tools from linguistic discourse analysis (keyword analysis, metaphor analysis, argumentation analysis, genre analysis) and political science (political culture, comparative politics, morphology of ideologies), I demonstrate the similarities and differences between these discourses at a structural level. Germany and the UK differ widely in their political cultures and institutions as well as in their traditions of political discourse, and I analyse how far these differences manifest themselves in the linguistic strategies employed by the German SPD and the British Labour Party in order to change their ideological identity in the 1990s and early 2000s. In order to describe and compare central features of the discourse of the Third Way in Germany and the UK, the analysis begins at the crossing point of the two discourses: a policy paper that became known as the Schröder-Blair paper. The analysis is then enriched by evaluating three key publications by leading proponents of a Third Way (Giddens (1998) The Third Way, Mandelson and Liddle (1996) The Blair Revolution, Hombach (1998) Aufbruch). The second step focuses on two central party-political text types, ‘party conference speeches' and ‘election manifestos', to demonstrate how they differ in German and English, and which central features of the Third-Way discourse Labour and the SPD employ in these texts to convince the party members and the electorate of their new political orientation. The analysis of the election manifestos also adds a diachronic element, as it contains a corpus-assisted analysis of the election manifestos of Labour and the SPD between 1987 and 2002.

Abstract:
The core support for social democratic parties has long rested in labour union members. That is no less true for the Swedish Social Democratic party (SAP) in relation to the main industrial labour union (LO). The support for SAP among LO-member has however faltered in recent years, and increasingly the core voters are lending their support to the Sweden Democrats (SD), a right-wing populist party. The purpose of this study was to identify possible explanations as to why the core voters have abandoned the party, with an emphasis on the party’s own actions and strategy. The method to achieve this were extensive interviews with experts at LO, through which both pre-existing as well as new modells of explanations were developed and presented. Crucially the factors and models intended to explain this occurrence is thus rooted in an union perspective, since the interviewees are expected to express the clearest analysis of the situation, as well as represent the interests of their members. The study has found a number of possible reasons for the core voter flight. 1) Underlying reasons, i.e changes in the socioeconomic structure, due to among other things urbanisation, increased employment and education opportunities – which has eroded working class consciousness and thus the degree of class voting. Furthermore SAP has exacerbated the situation, either 2) subconsciously by adopting new frames of references and changing the party’s class character, or 3) consciously by pursuing a supra-class strategy in order to maximize votes. Regardless of how or why the party currently lacks its former ability to appeal to its working class base. Furthermore it can in part be ascribed to a prioritizing of strategic aims above ideological ones. However, the party can reverse the trend of core voter flight by refocusing on classic social democratic policies of redistribution, welfare, and class politics.

Abstract:
The arguments concerning the unviability of Social Democracy at the beginning of new century within the context of globalization, and the accusations for its shift towards the New Right/Neo-Liberalism in the case of the Third Way has been criticized in a historico-critical way in this thesis. It is claimed that the insufficiency of these arguments arises from their analysis of Social Democracy merely through policies, or party politics, which have displayed great variety in the evolution of Social Democracy. Their shortage also stems from misunderstandings concerning Social Democracy before 1980, such as that it was against the market economy, that it was a working class ideology, and that it neglected the individual. Against the arguments of unviability and the accusations directed to Social Democracy, the thesis will assert that the theorization of Social Democracy should be based on its principles, such as democracy, progressiveness (movement) and social justice. By focusing on social democratic conception of social justice, this thesis defends that there is continuity within the tradition of Social Democracy, even in the face of globalization and in its encounters with the developments after 1980.

Abstract:
The research examines New Labour’s Third Way policies and the impact New Deal for Communities (NDC) regeneration programme had on participation in health care. This longitudinal study (1998-2007) explores participatory joint working, welfare state, social capacity, health inequalities, citizen involvement and community capacity. It captures the experiences of local community and front-line workers whilst delivering the Health Focus Group (HFG) in the NDC programme. Using action learning reflection techniques, the study analyses a purposeful sample of 15 from the local community, front-line workers, and strategic respondents involved in the NDC health programme. The research demonstrated the NDC did increase participation, joint working and involvement of local actors 1998–2003. The importance of communication, leadership and relationships was recognised as an important catalyst for developing community governance models. The new action learning spaces initiated, designed and delivered 19 new models of joint local clinical, community and complementary health and well-being projects. In 2001, New Labour introduced public private finance initiatives with the Primary Care Trust (PCT) which conflicted with the local actors’ involvement in the participatory joint decision-making. The reconfiguration of health and social care services and the new public health models introduced complex governance and monitoring models, further distancing the local actors from the process. Strategic staff changes in key governance positions also adversely affected the communication and trust established with local actors. The research concluded operational, tactical, and strategic alignment is necessary to maximise joint participation in decision-making.
