Abstract:
This paper investigates the problems facing masters’ students with their thesis writing phases and completion. This research seeks to provide a smart solution that is beneficial, both to the advisor and student(s). Survey and interviews were conducted among masters’ students to determine the challenges facing masters students in the course of their thesis writing phases and completion process. Based on the results of the survey and interviews, a concept model for thesis supervision system (TSS) was developed Providing an automated supervision system might encourage students and ‎advisors to communicate in an efficient way resulting in more quality of thesis outcomes and ‎reducing the delay in thesis process. Moreover, the user interface mimics the TSS process in an interactive way that illustrates how the application would be depicted when designed.

Abstract:
This study which was a descriptive survey, was basically to find out the factors that affected the completion of the masters thesis at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana. The primary purpose of the research was to identify factors that might be hindering masters degree students from completing their theses, thereby either delaying or forgoing the successful completion of the degree. The participants in this study were "Successful Thesis Graduates" (STGs), "All-But Thesis" students (ABTs) who were enrolled between the years 1989 and 1993 and lecturers who served as thesis supervisors within the same period. The five most significant factors identified as obstacles to completion of the thesis in order ofimportance were : (1) lack ofbooks and other relevant materials; (2) lack of financial resources; (3) students' lukewarm attitude or lack of seriousness; (4) supervisors' delay in vetting work submitted by students; (5) students' work demands or combining thesis work with other jobs.

Abstract:
Many universities and colleges in low-income and middle-income countries require a masters dissertation or thesis for as part of postgraduate training, and some colleges offer a 1-year to 2-year diploma of child health as a clinical qualification to enable skills in child health for generalists, or as part of the early phase of paediatric training. This paper describes the stages of doing a research project for such a masters or diploma, and describes in detail how to write a minor thesis. The paper is designed to provide a practical approach for junior researchers, and their supervisors. Colleges differ in their formal requirements of a minor thesis (word count, line spacing, referencing style), but this paper outlines the principles and practical issues rarely covered elsewhere.

Abstract:
It has been established that there are inter-chapter variations regarding metadiscourse use in masters’ thesis. This paper, therefore, investigates the differences and similarities in metadiscourse use between the Introduction and Literature Review (LR) chapters in Sociology masters’ thesis from an English-medium university. The Introduction and LR Chapters of ten theses constituted the corpus for this study. The metadiscursive devices were manually coded, drawing on the modified version of the Hyland’s (2005a) interpersonal model of metadiscourse. It was realized that there are both differences and similarities between the two chapters in terms of metadiscourse use. In the ranking, the interactive and interactional devices, transitions, and hedges respectively recorded the highest frequencies in the two chapters. Besides, there were significant variations across the two chapters in terms of both interactive and interactional subcategories. The findings have implications for the teaching of English for Research Purposes, and the theory of metadiscourse.

Abstract:
In her important work, Hasidism as Mysticism: Quietistic Elements in Eighteenth Century Hasidic Thought, the late Rivkah Schatz-Uffenheimer depicted early eighteenth-century Hasidism as a movement with pronounced ‘quietist tendencies’. In this paper I raise several difficulties with this thesis. These follow from social-activist features of early Hasidism as well as from a selection from the writings of leading early Hasidic masters. I conclude that a major stream of thought in early Hasidim was not quietist in tendency. Finally, I compare the intentions of the masters I cite to some non-quietist themes in Eastern mystical thought.

Full text
Abstract:
There are two copies of each core histone in a nucleosome, however, it is unclear whether post-translational modifications on each molecule function redundantly or if symmetrical modifications are required to properly regulate gene expression. We tried to address this question by breaking nucleosomal symmetry and measuring its impact on gene expression. Our strategy includes re-engineering specific residues at the H3-H3 interface, generating pairs of mutant proteins, which were predicted by computational methods to form obligate heterodimers. Using S. cerevisiae as a model system, we tested the viability of strains with mutant histones, and analyzed the interaction between by co-immunoprecipitation from mononucleosome preparations. We also measured the changes of gene expression in the strains bearing single-tailed or tailless H3 heterodimers. The data suggested that the best computationally-derived H3 pair was frequently, but not exclusively heterodimeric in vivo. In order to obtain a more stringent H3 heterodimer, random mutagenesis was performed on four codons in the original computational design, and then genetic screening of the mutant libraries was performed.

Abstract:
Background Herbal marijuana alternatives (HMA), legal plant products adulterated with synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists, represent a growing public health concern. Only a few case reports describe HMA and synthetic cannabinoid’s clinical toxicity. We describe an outbreak of HMA abuse primarily in the Midwest, the clinical presentation of HMA toxicity, and clinical and forensic testing. Methods During the course of ongoing surveillance for emerging drugs of abuse between November 2009 and August 2010, we retrospectively and prospectively identified a convenience sample comprising 81 cases of abuse of HMA products. Subject demographics, vital signs, lab results and urine were obtained (when available) and tested via gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) analysis. Samples of HMAs and synthetic cannabinoids were also analyzed via GCMS. Results HMA users were predominantly young males who inhaled HMAs. Analysis of their urine detected synthetic cannabinoid parent compound in one subject. GCMS analysis of synthetic cannabinoids established a reference library that confirmed the presence of synthetic cannabinoids in sampled HMA products. Conclusion HMA products were available in head shops, gas stations, and via the Internet. We have confirmed the presence of synthetic cannabinoids in these HMA products. The tachycardia, hypertension, agitation, anxiety, vomiting and hallucinations observed in this convenience sample are not readily explained by the presence of synthetic cannabinoids acting on CB1 and CB2 receptors. Further research must be done on HMA products and their abusers.

Bennett, Jeremy M. "Development of a low bit rate satellite communications system for broardcasting differential GPS corrections : Jeremy M. Bennett." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1996.

Find full text
Abstract:
Differential operation of the Global Positioning System (GPS) has proved to offer superior positioning accuracy over unaided GPS. The nature of Differential GPS (DGPS) requires correction data to be sent from a reference station or a network of reference stations to the GPS user in the field. Since it cannot be assumed that the GPS user is close to a telephone or data line, wireless communications technologies must be used to provide the GPS user with DGPS corrections. As very little crossover work has been done between the GPS experts and the data communications experts, there is a real need for a single source of reference which brings together information on these fields and others which relate to DGPS service provision. The thesis reviews the communications options available for the broadcast of DGPS corrections, reviews the DGPS technologies available, and dimensions a DGPS system which would provide an easily-accessible and affordable DGPS service to GPS users anywhere in Australia. The dimensioned DGPS system is analysed in order to determine the positioning accuracies afforded by that system.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis outlines a research project that investigated the theory and practice of employment relations in a large Australian company, Telstra. The thesis takes its point of departure from the literature that has contended that there has been a 'transformation' of American industrial relations (Kochan et al., 1986). The literature review covers the debates that have developed around these authors' contentions and also coverage of literature that is germane to the research project in the areas of public sector reform and privatisation and employee participation in organisational governance. The research findings are presented in a case study divided into two pm1s. The first of these parts investigates the context of employment relations at Telstra by investigating the policy environment and technological change to which Telstra has been subject. The second case presents the results of research into the conduct of employment relations at Telstra. The research finds that the environment has had a strong impact on employment relations outcomes throughout Telstra's history. Environmental factors have constrained performance to such an extent that moves to a more consultative and pm1icipative approach to industrial relations within the firm have, for the most part, been difficult to implement and have not met expectations.

The form exists long efter the content fades. (Pally, 1991 a: 11) Peter Greenaway's feature films diverge significantly from traditional arthouse and mainstream cinema. While their complex formal structure is supported by intense intellectual content and structurally integrated allegory and symbolism, they have very limited narrative structure or character development. Greenaway has commented that "we expect content and narrative continuity of film and could never conceive of shape and colour being responsible enough to provide coherence" and that "the form exists long after the content fades," indicating his deliberate divergence from other models. Full text
Abstract:
World trade has developed in many ways, both multilaterally and regionally. Consequently, many of the economies in the world have enjoyed rapidlyincreasing economic growths through promoting trade-involved activities and developing more fruitful trade patterns. At the same time, the trade patterns have been focused on acceleration of economic benefits based on a discriminatory scale within a certain region. Since the discriminatory regionalism has been criticised to be inappropriate in terms of full development of global welfare, the economies in the Asia-Pacific region have come to develop the idea of forming a new international organisation, named Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), with ultimate goals of strengthening the GATT-based (now, WTO) multilateral trading system, and open and free trade and investment in the region. Since the successful inaugural meeting of APEC held in Canberra, Australia in 1989, the process to achieve the goals has been accelerated, bearing productive fruits for further evolution of the process. Another productive fruit given from the evolution of APEC is a major motivation for the bilateral economic relationship between Korea(ROK) and Australia rapidly-developed from sharing the membership of APEC. Given the ultimate goal of the APEC process, the two active member economies have shared common interests in pursuing and promoting the process, tightening reciprocal economic links and increasing two-way trade share in the region. The major purpose of the whole research is narrowed down to the investigation of suggestions for further evolution of the APEC process and bilateral economic relationship between Korea and Australia. With this aim, the research problem has been developed as follows: How should APEC facilitate a freer trade environment in the world economy, and how should Korea and Australia promote the bilateral economic relations as member economies in the APEC process? In this thesis, the approach to this problem is mostly relied on how to harden the ties among member economies to achieve the process and to promote the bilateral economic relationship in light of the progressive APEC process. To examine the research problem more precisely, the following research questions were developed in finding out potential solutions to the research problem, they include: 1. What are main features of the world trade patterns today? 2. What are the purposes for the creation of APEC? 3. How far has APEC been evolved? 4. How should the member economies of APEC secure the future evolution of APEC? 5. What are the implications for Korea from APEC? 6. What are the implications for Australia from APEC? 7. What are the suggestions for Korea and Australia to have closer bilateral economic relations in APEC? The data for this research were collected by using the elite interviewing methodology, and validated as well as supplemented through the use of three survey questionnaires. The research findings then were formulated from a combination of the data gathered from the survey questionnaires and interviews, which was analysed through the use of both quantitative and qualitative research design. More specifically, the research strategies of the analytic method and observation were employed to investigate the data of this research project. Regarding the research findings of this research, the indication was investigated on the following four sections, they include: 1. motives, objectives and prospects of APEC; 2. suggested future directions of APEC; 3. the changing bilateral economic relationship between Korea and Australia since the formation of APEC; and 4. likely future economic ties between Korea and Australia

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine Australia's economic relationship with the European Union (EU) countries since 1955 in order to develop a greater understanding of the current situation between them. This is to be completed on two levels. The first being the actual trade relationship between Australia and the EU and the second being the Australian perceptions of this trade relationship. The research problem to be addressed in this research is: How have the development of regional groupings like the European Union impacted on a country's trade? What role does the fear of exclusion play in this relationship? The research questions that address this research problem are: RQ.1) What has occurred in Australia's trade relationship with the EU countries since 1955? RQ.2) How do Australians perceive Europe as a trading partner? RQ.3) How have Australian perceptions of Europe affected economic relations with the EU? Chapter one introduces the background to this research, it outlines the research problem, questions, objectives and the structure of the thesis. Chapter two reviews the relevant literature to this research. The research is based on international relations. A history of the emergence of the international economy is examined, and within this processes of economic and political globalization are assessed. This provides an overview of the processes which have led to the development of this research problem. The main theoretical body to which this research contributes is then examined, this being the process of regionalisation as to whether a tri-polar world will be the norm or if it is a step toward globalization. An examination of the European Union, a regional trade bloc, is then made. The further body of theory to that on regionalisation is then examined being on customs unions, using the EU as an example. An overview of Australia's position in the international economy and the implications of these processes for Australia are then assessed. Finally the literature on Australian relations with the EU is examined. Chapter three outlines the methodological processes of this research. Qualitative analysis is to be performed with some quantitative analysis. An historic approach is taken. Archival analysis, surveys and interviews are used to collect the data. Procedures of data collection and analysis are outlined and ethical procedures are considered. Chapter four presents the findings of the research. The patterns of data pertaining to research question one are first presented, these being the trade statistics between Australia and the EU. Data pertaining to research question two are then presented. Firstly government perceptions of Australia's relations with Europe are detailed. Secondly the portrayal of Europe by the media is outlined. Finally the results of the surveys and interviews are presented giving Australian perceptions of Europe. Chapter five summarises the findings of the research and concludes the research questions and problem. The variation in the reality of the trade pattern between Australia and the EU and the Australian perception of relations with Europe are accounted for given the perception of the Government and the Media. Implications of the research are then given for theory, and suggestions are given for future research,

Abstract:
This paper aims to examine several aspects of Quality Assurance in Australian manufacturing organizations. Firstly, it studies organizations that rely on traditional methods of Quality Control for managing Quality, and one finding is that the management of Quality in Australian organizations has generally not been a central strategy for organizational effectiveness. Secondly, it examines the benefits that effective Quality Assurance can give an organization. The results of the PIMS database were examined, and one finding was that there was strong correlation between relative Quality and business success. It was found that PIMS identifies Quality in terms of "attributes of importance to the customer", which is consistent with "conformance to requirements." Thirdly, the paper examines the implementation of a system of Quality Assurance in terms of Quality policy, Quality culture, managerial commitment to Quality, organization and Quality planning, as many of these are prerequisites for the effectiveness of the Quality Assurance system. Fourthly, the organization with an accredited Quality Assurance system is compared with an organization with a non-accredited system. The Australian Standard AS 3901-1987 /ISO 9001-1987 is examined in some detail, and the influence of the Queensland Government State Purchasing Policy on an organization's decision to implement a Quality Assurance system is examined.

Abstract:
AbstractThe subject of this paper is the basic principles of a martial art that has been perfected over millennia of social strata, skirmishes, and settlements, and is the amalgamation of different cultures and traditions which flourished during the Renaissance. We can learn this art today thanks to the texts written and printed during that period. In his most famous drawing, Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) shows a man drawn inside two geometrical shapes: the square with the center at his groin and the circle with the center at his navel. But there is another possible representation that provides an anthropometric revelation with his center at the solar plexus. That is the man I define as dynamic. Many traces of him may be found in the Masters’ texts and we have magnificent examples of him in daily life: the man who, through performing perfect combat moves, is able to move and “become” a sphere, the “Palla,” or ball, as Camillo Agrippa calls it, with changing circumference and surface. He can move his center within his own body and outside of it, to the palm of his hand, to the blade of his sword, and even to inside his enemy. The dynamic man represents the development upon both the natural man, depicted in a square with his groin at the center and the speculative man, depicted in a circle with his navel at the center. This man creates a sphere around himself, with the solar plexus at its center. He has the ability to move that center to any part of his body, even to his blade and as far as the blade’s end, thus modifying the circumference of his sphere as he pleases. The findings presented here are the fruit of over twenty years of research and practice, reflecting my own progression in the theoretical and practical understanding of Italian martial arts.

Abstract:
The constitution of Bangladesh aims to ensure a discrimination free world guaranteeing women equal access to political and public life. The ratification of CEDAW, adaptation of both MDG and SDG by the government also promote this goal. Dhaka requires an efficient transportation system to ensure the freedom of mobility for all. However, the public buses of Dhaka are insecure, unreliable, congested and unsafe. As a result, the women and children suffer the most while boarding a bus. They have to face both physical and emotional pain. This consequently restricts women's mobility rights. As men are responsible for creating a gender insensitive commuting environment inside public buses, their perceptions on the fact is to be explored. This chapter with the help of the researcher' research data (for Masters' thesis) from 2015-2016, highlights on men's perceptions of commuting environment women experience in public buses in Dhaka city. How these perceptions are shaped as an outcome of hegemonic masculinity is also analysed in this chapter using Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity.

Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to clarify one the most significant misunderstandings of Deleuze and Guattari’s political theory: the difference between their conceptions of ontological anarchism and political anarchism. The author’s thesis is that equating these two kinds anarchism undermines the theory and practice of political anarchism. He also argues more generally that there is no necessary relation between ontological anarchism and political anarchism and, finally, shows the practical and analytic strength of a strictly political theory of anarchism derived from Deleuze and Guattari’s work.

Abstract:
Space engineering students and academics from Cranfield University have developed two space debris mitigation drag sail concepts and three sails are currently in orbit. The sails enable a reduced time to atmospheric re-entry by increasing the natural aerodynamic drag forces acting on the host satellite. Intended to be used on small, low Earth orbit satellites, these sails provide a low-cost solution to achieving compliance with the IADC target of removal from orbit within 25 years of end-of-mission. The LEOniDAS team, comprising one PhD and three MSc students, submitted a proposal to the ESA Fly Your Thesis! parabolic flight campaign to perform microgravity deployment testing on a more scalable and adaptable hybrid design. The project aimed to qualify the new design, provide a better understanding of deployment behaviour in microgravity and allow for a deeper understanding of the effect of deployment on the host satellite. Participation in the programme provided significant educational benefits to the students involved, resulting in three Masters theses and a major input to a PhD thesis, as well as publications and outreach activities. The experiment was presented by the students at the ESA Academy Gravity-Related Training week in January 2021. There followed extensive design, prototyping and assembly work, with regular review and input from ESA and Novespace, culminating in the two-week parabolic flight campaign in October 2021. The planned deployment experiments were successfully completed across all three flights, with the experimenters accumulating a total of more than 30 minutes of microgravity. Data on dynamics of the sail deployments was recorded via high-speed video cameras, accelerometers and torque sensors. This paper will highlight the key scientific and educational achievements of the project, and summarise the lessons learned for the benefit of future participants in this exceptional student opportunity.

"Development and Lessons Learned of New Modular Ship Design Activities for Graduate Education During COVID." In SNAME 14th International Marine Design Conference. Abstract:
This paper describes changes that have been implemented to an obligatory MSc course on advanced ship design techniques at Delft University of Technology. These changes have been brought about due to three separate causes: 1) COVID and virtual learning, 2) the desire to introduce gamification into active teaching and learning of ship design, and 3) changing market needs. These three very different drivers meant that a new design activity had to be developed, which included a new case study, and new teaching methods incorporating both gamification and virtual learning. Two case studies will be discussed. First, a smaller case study will discuss the introduction of a new hybrid format (in-person and virtual participation) game designed to teach students modular design for offshore support vessels (OSVs). This hybrid game was developed by an MSc student and co-author, Laurentiu Lupoae, during an independent research assignment under the supervision of lead author Assistant Professor Austin Kana and ran during the original submarine design project for the fall of 2020. To support this game, a modular design Excel tool was developed and the details will be discussed in the paper. Second, after implementing lessons learned from the first case study, the course design project for the fall of 2021 was redeveloped to cover the design of a small fleet of modular offshore service vessels (OSVs) for offshore wind. The growth of the offshore wind market and industry push towards developing service vessels to support the energy transition, especially in North Sea, were some of the key reasons behind selecting this as a case study for the design project. The structure of the new design project and the bespoke educational design tools developed for the project will be discussed. Both developments were supported heavily by PhD researchers and MSc students working on either an independent research assignment or their MSc thesis. In this sense, both the development of these activities and the execution of them during the course were learning opportunities for the researchers and MSc students. The paper will conclude with lessons learned focused on improving graduate education for masters students studying ship design.

Abstract:
The constant modifications that are done aboard floating units have direct impact on the safety requirements regarding stability. With few exceptions these modifications imply on onboard construction (e. g. process plant upgrade), and the correspondent rise of light ship weight. The consequence will be a negative effect on stability, and because the semi submersible has a very low stability margin, a reduction of the capacity for future modifications that will probably be necessary as well as the ability to deballast to lower drafts. According the Rules applicable the modification of the light ship weight that surpasses a defined limit must be checked through an Inclining Test that can only be executed with the unit in sheltered waters. For a Floating Production Unit (FPU) this test is unfeasible because of the operational procedure (the need to disconnect anchor lines and risers, tow and reconnect) and the production downtime. The alternative is to negotiate with the regulatory bodies a penalty for the light ship modifications that imply in a further reduction on the range of stability and the correspondent capacity of the unit the undergo further and necessary modifications. The motivation of this work is to develop an Inclining Test procedure that can be applied to semi submersible floating production units moored on location, without the need to tow to sheltered waters, which will yield results as accurate as the ones obtained through the conventional Inclining Test, and also accepted by the main Classification Societies. To achieve this it is necessary to first determine the accuracy of the conventional Inclining Test accepted by the Classifications Societies by means of a detailed statistical analysis. Then innovations are proposed in the instruments used to measure de physical parameters, the hydrostatic relation between moment and angle, and the test procedure itself with much better accuracy compared to the conventional procedure. Reliable and tested computational tools are developed to model risers and mooring line forces to determine their effect, and statistical tools are proposed to filter wind and wave influence. The result is an acceptable alternative to the conventional Inclining Test that is consistent with the stability rules that apply, permits a reliable determination of the main stability parameters, reduction on the penalties and consequently further and most necessary modifications aboard. This work is based on the author’s thesis for a Masters Degree at COPPE/UFRJ, currently underway at the Graduate Engineering Project Coordination at Rio de Janeiro Federal University.

Abstract:
Repair of DNA breaks is an essential function in plant cells as well as a crucial step in addition of modified DNA to plant cells. In addition, our inability to introduce modified DNA to its appropriate locus in the plant genome remains an important hurdle in genetically engineering crop species. We have taken a combined forward and reverse genetics approach to examining DNA double strand break repair in plants, focusing primarily on nonhomologous DNA end-joining. The forward approach utilizes a gamma-plantlet assay (miniature plants that are metabolically active but do not undergo cell division, due to cell cycle arrest) and has resulted in identification of five Arabidopsis mutants, including a new one defective in the homolog of the yeast RAD10 gene. The reverse genetics approach has identified knockouts of the Arabidopsis homologs for Ku80, DNA ligase 4 and Rad54 (one gene in what proves to be a gene family involved in DNA repair as well as chromatin remodeling and gene silencing)). All these mutants have phenotypic defects in DNA repair but are otherwise healthy and fertile. Additional PCR based screens are in progress to find knockouts of Ku70, Rad50, and Mre11, among others. Two DNA end-joining assays have been developed to further our screens and our ability to test candidate genes. One of these involves recovering linearized plasmids that have been added to and then rejoined in plant cells; plasmids are either recovered directly or transformed into E. coli and recovered. The products recovered from various mutant lines are then compared. The other assay involves using plant transposon excision to create DNA breaks in yeast cells and then uses the yeast cell as a system to examine those genes involved in the repair and to screen plant genes that might be involved as well. This award supported three graduate students, one in Israel and two in the U.S., as well as a technician in the U.S., and is ultimately expected to result directly in five publications and one Masters thesis.

Abstract:
The central thesis of this paper is that e-learning courses can have a significant impact on English language for specific purposes (ESP) proficiency of mining mechanical engineering students. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of ESP Moodle-based course “English for Mining Mechanical Engineers” and to reveal the results of its experimental approbation. In order to identify the lectures’ and learners’ needs we have applied the survey research. The survey confirmed the greatest demand for Moodle courses that include all the elements of a coherent training manual to provide self-development of engineering students. The interview results contributed to design of author’s ESP course syllabus. The importance and originality of this study are that to approbate the course materials’ effectiveness two approaches have been adopted simultaneously. The first is blended learning method based on e-learning platform applied in the experimental group and the second one is classic in-class instructor-led studying used in a control group. Students’ progress in ESP proficiency has been assessed using the cross assessment method. The experiment has validated the initial hypothesis that the special online courses focused on honing foreign language skills and integrated in the domain of specific professional knowledge have a beneficial effect on students’ communicative competencies in general. There were identified the advantages of self-tuition based on Moodle platform. The Moodle course lets the teachers save considerable in-class time to focus more on communicative assignments. The findings of this study have a number of practical implications in ESP online courses development.
