Abstract:
Understanding the scientific and social structure of a discipline is a fundamental aspect for scientific evaluation processes, identifying trends and niches, and balancing the trade-off between exploitation and exploration in research. In the present contribution, the production of doctoral theses is used as a proxy to analyze the scientific structure of the knowledge area of business organization in Spain. To that end, a complex networks approach is selected, and two different networks are built: (i) the social network of co-participation in thesis examining committees and thesis supervision, and (ii) a bipartite network of theses and thesis descriptors. The former has a modular structure that is partially explained by thematic specialization in different subdisciplines. The latter serves to assess the interdisciplinary structure of the discipline, as it enables the characterization of affinity levels between fields, research poles and thematic clusters. Our results have implications for the scientific evaluation and formal definition of related fields.

Abstract:
With the transition to Industry 4.0, actors in many industries face challenges such as how to successfully implement technical solutions and retain competitiv eadvantages. In the smart waste management sector, many solutions have been presented in how to create effecient sensors but a practical way of comparing these solutions is non-existent. From research within Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and interviews with operators at Scania, we present a clear and effective way of comparing smart waste management sensors with regards to operational effectiveness. Along with this, we present a way to measure  fill volume of garbage containers using monocular depth estimation and compare this to using ultrasonic sensors. Our findings show that depth estimation with deep convolutional neural networks is viable as long as environmental conditions can be controlled, although, we have also found that ultrasonic sensors outperform depth estimation in many metrics and is the desired way of measuring fill level of containers in many applications. Despite this, the results of this research show promise in that depth estimation can be used in conjunction with object recognition models, leading to the obsolescence of ultrasonic sensors in more complex applications.

Qandour, Amro. "Application framework for wireless sensor networks [thesis]." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2012. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/472.

Full text
Abstract:
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are based on innovative technologies that had revolutionized the methods in which we interact with the environment; i.e., through sensing the physical (e.g., fire motion, contact) and chemical (e.g., molecular concentration) properties of the natural surroundings. The hardware in which utilized by WSNs is rapidly evolving into sophisticated platforms that seamlessly integrate with different vendors and protocols (plug-n-play). In this thesis, we propose a WSN framework which provides assistance with monitoring environmental conditions; we focus on three main applications which include: a. Air-quality monitoring, b. Gas-leak detection, and c. Fire sensing. The framework involves four specifications: 1. Over the air programming (OTAP), 2. Network interconnections, 3. Sensors manageability, and 4. Alarm signaling. Their aim is to enhance the internetwork relations between the WSNs and the outside-world (i.e., main users, clients, or audience); by creating a medium in which devices efficiently communicate, independent of location or infrastructure (e.g., Internet), in order to exchange data among networked-objects and their users. Therefore, we propose a WSN-over-IP architecture which provides several renowned services of the Internet; the major functionalities include: live-data streaming (real-time), e-mailing, cloud storage (external servers), and network technologies (e.g., LAN or WLAN). WSNs themselves operate independently of the Internet; i.e., their operation involve unique protocols and specific hardware requirements which are incompatible with common network platforms (e.g., within home network infrastructure). Hybrid technologies are those which support multiple data-communication protocols within a single device; their main capabilities involve seamless integration and interoperability of different hardware vendors. We propose an overall architecture based on hybrid communication technology in which data is transmitted using three types of protocols: 802.11 (Wi-Fi), 802.15.4 and Digimesh (WSN).

Abstract:
AbstractThis brief includes a summary of the Ph.D. thesis entitled “Traffic management in networks with programmable data planes” and supervised by Prof. Antonio Capone. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enables the configuration and operation of communications networks through open software programming interfaces providing an unprecedented flexibility in their dynamic reconfiguration and management. The thesis analyses the opportunities for traffic management provided by the SDN paradigm at different levels. Starting from the programmability at the control plane, we have designed a Traffic Engineering framework operating on the global view offered on top of the controller to proactively configure the network according to traffic measurements while limiting the number of reconfigurations. In order to deal with unexpected conditions such as network failures and congestion, the above centralized, global and proactive approach has been complemented by reactive and distributed approaches based on advanced stateful programmable data planes which enable a self-adaptation according to partial local information yielding to a more prompt and scalable reaction. All the solutions presented in the thesis have been evaluated with software prototypes based on research-oriented or production-ready open-source tools. Some of the extensions developed for these tools have been integrated as official open-source contributions.

Abstract:
AbstractForestry originated as a science under the need to manage forests for timber production in a sustainable way. Since then, sustainability has been broadened to include a variety of values and services recognised as important for human well-being, while at maintaining a relevant productive function. Hence, silviculture exists as a need of humankind and not as a need of forests for their continued existence. Sustainability is obtained by adopting correct silvicultural practices and adjusting the planning in view of the most suitable management able to ensure the goals, for example, carbon balance under climate warming scenarios. National forest inventories provide reliable information that is needed for effective forest policies. This chapter shows area estimates on some variables important for production, such as forest accessibility, presence of roads or tracks, terrain roughness and availability for wood supply (Sect. 8.2). Silviculture practices are actualised by forest utilisation modes, which are also related to timber logging modes. Section 8.3 shows the statistics on these variables as well as those on the growing stock and the biomass annually removed from the forest. Section 8.4 shows the estimates on presence of forest planning or regulations that influence productive aspects of forests. The type of planning may vary consistently due to overlapping authorities protecting forests in Italy, so the presence of planning at different levels was emphasised.

Abstract:
Modern business processes are characterized by a large number of random factors that can affect the characteristics of internal and external processes. The created models use the method of calculating output parameters as an operation with random characteristics of factors that affect the final results. The processes and factors of the project are divided into permanent and random. Random processes are characterized by individual distributions and characteristics. The mathematical model of a business project is formed by a program that performs operations with the characteristics of random factors and risk factors that form the business project. The generated model allows you to calculate financial flows and balances at all stages of the project implementation, and determines various indicators of its effectiveness. To optimize these indicators, it is planned to introduce anti-risk measures. The model allows you to optimize the number of such activities, taking into account their cost and the degree of impact on the project performance indicators. Using the proposed method of analyzing business projects allows you to take into account possible random factors and risk factors and make the most optimal management decisions.

Abstract:
This chapter identifies the main challenges in the transition from engineering to management and discusses how management education may assist in this transition. Mixed methods were used to achieve the above. Initially, two focus groups were conducted, and at a later stage, 126 engineers reported through a questionnaire the most common challenges in the transition from engineering to management and then a few were also interviewed. Results demonstrate that skills such as delegation, communication, convincing, coaching, and guiding others pose important challenges. In relation to the second inquiry, it is proposed that, other than management theory, offering examples, opportunity to practice with feedback, and case-based learning can help minimise the challenges. Also, leadership skills, such as delegation, developing personality, cross-cultural understanding, and managing diversity, can be strategically used to facilitate learning in the field of engineering and better prepare engineers in their transition to management.

Abstract:
Both natural and anthropogenic forces could play significant roles in coastal erosion in Western Taiwan and Central Vietnam's coastlines. Intensive socio-economic development, sea level rise, more frequent and strong intensity of disasters are predicted to occur in a future of global climate change, which poses an urgent need for coastal hazard management strategies. This chapter describes main causes and discusses the applied engineering interventions to reduce coastal erosion at these sites. Hard engineering structures are often constructed in these areas, but they seem to be merely short-term costly solutions and have a negative impact on the coastal environment and its residents. Nature-based solutions and soft engineering approaches are proposed, which seem to be sustainable and less expensive than hard engineering options. These possible future solutions can be applied in coastal settings to meet the principles of sustainable and humanitarian engineering with multiple benefits to reduce the risk and negative impacts on both humans and the environment.

Brown, Jasen, Robert Davinroy, Ivan Nguyen, Aron Rhoads, Nathan Lovelace, Emily Russ, and Jessamin Straub. Tombigbee River : River Miles 81.0-76.0 sediment management study. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), April 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/43942.

Full text
Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, Applied River Engineering Center (AREC), in cooperation with the Operations Branch of the Mobile District, conducted a sediment management study of the Sunflower Bend reach of the Tombigbee River, between River Miles 81.0 and 76.0, near Jackson, AL. The objective of the study was to look at sediment management alternatives to alleviate or eliminate repetitive maintenance dredging. These alternatives involved various river engineering measures including dikes, weirs, channel armoring, disposal armoring, and combinations thereof. A physical Hydraulic Sediment Response model was used to examine the sediment response resulting from these alternatives. During model testing, and after discussions with AREC and Mobile Operations Division staff, a second objective was established to define existing non-erodible bed materials that were located throughout the reach. This was conducted to examine the merits of strategically removing these erosion resistant materials in the river as an additional dredging/excavation alternative. The most favorable alternatives involved removing bedload sand and consolidated clay material from between River Miles 79.1 and 78.0 to improve navigation.

Swan Island : monitoring and adaptive management plan. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/45044.

Full text
Abstract:
Swan Island is a 10.12 ha island located in the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Because of its value as a natural wave break for the town of Ewell on nearby Smith Island, as well as the ongoing erosion and subsidence of the island, in 2019 US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)–Baltimore District placed 45,873 m³ of dredged sediment and planted 200,000 marsh plants. This restoration provided an opportunity to quantify the engineering (that is, resilience) and ecological performance of the island, postplacement. The lack of quantitative data on the performance of natural features such as islands has led to perceived uncertainties that are often cited as barriers to implementation. To address these data gaps, a multidisciplinary collaboration of five government entities identified project objectives and monitoring parameters through a series of mediated workshops and then developed a conceptual model to articulate those parameters and the linkages between them. This monitoring and adaptive management plan (MAMP) documents those monitoring parameters and procedures and can serve as an example for other scales, regions, and research questions. Documenting research and monitoring efforts may help to foster widespread acceptance of nature-based solutions such as islands.

Abstract:
To deliver infrastructure that sustain our communities, economy, and environment, we must innovate, modernize, and even revolutionize our approach to infrastructure development. Change takes courage, but as one starts down the path of innovation, what was once novel becomes more familiar, more established. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is walking this path with our partners through the Engineering With Nature (EWN) Initiative, integrating human engineering with natural systems. The International Guidelines on Natural and Nature-Based Features for Flood Risk Management are the next step toward revolutionary infrastructure development—a set of real-world guidelines to help familiarize us with what was once novel. USACE and collaborators around the world have been building, learning, and documenting the best practices for constructing Natural and Nature-Based Features (NNBF) for decades. The consolidation of these lessons into a single guidance document gives decision-makers and practitioners a much-needed resource to pursue, consider, and apply NNBF for flood risk management while expanding value through infrastructure. Relationships and partnerships are vital ingredients for innovation and progress. The NNBF Guidelines was achieved because of the strong relationships in the nature-based engineering community. The magnitude and diversity of contributors to the NNBF Guidelines have resulted in a robust resource that provides value beyond a single agency, sector, or nation. Similarly, the work of incorporating NNBF into projects will require us to strengthen our relationships across organizations, mandates, and missions to achieve resilient communities. I hope you are inspired by the collaborative achievement of the NNBF Guidelines and will draw from this resource to develop innovative solutions to current and future flood risk management challenges. There is a lot we can achieve together along the path of revolutionary infrastructure development.
