Abstract:
Purpose – This paper draws on a recently completed professional doctorate thesis. The purpose of this paper is to explore how the research process mirrors the area being researched, and underscores the importance of the ability to tolerate ambiguity, in both the research process and in working to protect children. Design/methodology/approach – The doctorate used a constructivist grounded theory approach, and drew on 22 in-depth interviews with social workers and a sample of 20 serious case reviews. Central to the research process were issues of reflexivity and positionality, which were both crucial to the area under exploration. Findings – Central to the thesis on which this paper draws, and the professional doctorate is the notion of balance. Social workers and researchers have to negotiate both getting close to and achieving distance from, the subject of enquiry. Seeking and maintaining balance requires managing a number of dimensions, and the negotiation of ambiguity. Originality/value – This paper explores the complexity of “working the hyphen” of insider-outsider research, and argues that, as in child protection practice, insider-outsider research requires the adoption of strategies to both get close to, and achieve distance from, the subject of enquiry.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate examiner reactions to doctorate of business administration (DBA) theses at an Australian university applying Perry’s structured approach to thesis presentation, which had its origin in the marketing discipline, but is now widely applied to other business disciplines. Design/methodology/approach This paper examines 49 DBA examiner reports relating to 19 DBA theses using the structured Perry approach, with emphasis paid to comments relating to thesis structure and presentation. Only those theses that acknowledged Perry or demonstrated Perry-like characteristics were interrogated. Findings The use of Perry’s structured approach can lead to DBA theses that place excessive emphasis on description rather than practical outcomes, as should occur with a professional doctorate, and also fosters excessive repetition and scaffolding that unduly interferes with the candidate’s “story telling”. Many examiners found theses using Perry’s structured approach problematic, particularly with respect to a lack of integration with the literature and reflection on the findings in relation to previous studies. Research limitations/implications The use of Perry’s structured approach potentially acts as a further barrier to DBA theses, and other professional doctorates by extension, sufficiently differentiating themselves from PhDs. This has implications for the examination of such theses, which are sometimes viewed as lower-quality PhDs instead of professional doctorates. Originality/value Applying a traditional PhD thesis structure, such as the model advocated by Perry with its use of five chapters, to DBA theses potentially exacerbates existing professional doctorate “image” issues, thereby leading to ambiguity for examiners and the candidates themselves.

Abstract:
Maarten de Wilde was awarded his doctorate (cum laude) by the Erasmus University Rotterdam on 15 January 2015 for his thesis on 'Sharing the Pie'; Taxing Multinationals in a Global Market. In his thesis, of which this contribution is a summary, De Wilde sets out a proposal for an alternative, more neutral system for taxing multinationals. His suggestion is that multinationals should be treated as a single taxable entity and granted an allowance for equity capital provided by shareholders. The proposal geographically assigns the tax base in international situations to the countries where the multinational effectively sells its products and services instead of, as is currently the case, to the countries in which its investments are located. Switching to the proposed system would seem attractive for countries and regions, both individually and as a totality, and would boost the investment climate. Abstract:

The aim of this research is to examine graduate students’ needs and preferences for written feedback on academic writing from their lecturers and thesis supervisors. Quantitative method via survey questionnaire was used to collect data from 21 respondents. The data collection involved Master and Doctorate students at a tertiary level institution in Malaysia. The data was analyzed and tabulated using descriptive analysis. Results indicate that graduate students regularly need written feedback on their academic writing and they preferred electronic method to obtain feedback from their supervisors. Findings also indicate that graduate students appreciated feedback which was straightforward, provided clear instructions, directed them to other related resources, and feedback which was detailed or specific. This research filled the gap in literature by providing awareness among thesis supervisors and lecturers on the students’ needs and preference for written feedback on their academic writing. Apart from that, greater understanding of students’ perceived needs for feedback and preferences of feedback is also vital for lectures and thesis supervisors to increase the effectiveness of providing constructive written feedback.

Abstract:
This paper will outline how to prepare for, and write up, a good doctoral thesis. It will review strategies to help candidates through the whole process. It will start by looking at the purpose of a thesis, and the importance of developing good academic and personal support structures for candidates. It will go on to outline the pivotal role of planning and preparation of the structure and content, not only at the start, but by reviewing and amending the plan throughout the process. Some of the common psychological and practical dilemmas and experiences that are likely to unfold during the writing up process will be reviewed and a range of strategies for dealing with these will be provided, including some given by recent doctoral graduates. It will explain the importance of developing a relationship with the supervisory team that supports and facilitates the doctoral candidate’s progress and the importance of complying with departmental/university requirements. The authors also give suggestions about the organisation and structure of a thesis and map out core milestones and a time line which should makes successful completion of a doctorate more likely and less stressful.

Abstract:
As universities become accustomed to the complexities of their art and design faculties, a body of literature has emerged that explores some of the possibilities of a doctorate in the creative arts. In the area of fine art in particular, although not exclusively, there has been a drive towards a purely practice-based thesis. This article argues that the notion of the practice-only thesis is not only an unrealistic illusion that puts pressure on students, but also does not reflect contemporary professional practices. For an art practice to communicate any sort of specific knowledge it must be embedded in a pre-existing and continuously evolving flux of discourse produced through written and spoken language. The American artist Trisha Donnelly’s 2014 Serpentine Gallery exhibition is taken as an example. Critical writing in the art press produces an accepted interpretation, and this is what the artist ‘Trisha Donnelly’ comes to stand for. So artwork that might appear to be producing its meaning autonomously should be seen as a collaborative practice involving the artist together with their professional interpreters. Research students are required to produce a self-contained project which would seem to preclude the incorporation of writing or academic interpretation by others. But it is fundamentally unfair to demand a thesis without any written component since it does not exist in an expanded notion of the contemporary art world.

Abstract This contribution is dedicated to the French philologist Charles Bonnier (1861–1926), who dared to criticize the philological doxa of his time. As a result, Paul Meyer (1840–1917), one of the most influential philologists, refused his thesis at the École des chartes (Paris). Bonnier went to Germany, where he completed his doctorate at the University of Halle under the supervision of Hermann Suchier (1848–1914) ; later on he held teaching positions in England (Oxford, Liverpool). While Bonnier is regarded today as a pioneer of modern scripta research, his ideas and academic career still remain widely unknown.

Main concern of this article is to grasp the interpretative matrix of Hannah Arendt’s doctorate, which, I claim, is the central organising net for her other writings. I call this matrix “cryptotheological defence of the secular world”. In order to show its functionality, I have to determine the character of Arendt’s discourse in relation to theology and philosophy on the basis of her doctoral thesis from 1929. The main attention will be focused on the figure of the neighbour as a singular and the concept of natality. I will show how the critique of theology, often very ironic, serves Arendt to contest the paradigm of the political theology.

Abstract:
With many years of experience as a family therapist I became a researcher and embarked upon a Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice. I had wanted to illuminate the art, craft, and the aesthetics therapy where therapist expertise is creating the space for and architecting a dialogical process. Traditional research methods were too limiting for this project so I created my own bespoke methodology. This paper shows examples of how I have blended reflection on personal and professional experiences and conversational storytelling in writing my doctoral thesis. I discuss details of my methodological journey and articulate these ideas through the creative use of two reflexive dialogues. These illuminate the value of systemic conversation and storytelling, how we make meaning and sculpt our identities.

Abstract:
In this essay, I shall present key points from my dr.phil thesis (Higher Doctorate/Habilitation), Epistemological concerns – querying the learning field from a philosophical point of view (Dohn, 2017).1 The aim is to provide an overview of the thesis and to present its main argument for a form of applied philosophy where philosophy takes on the role of dialogue partner with a voice of its own. By way of illustration, I shall highlight some of the issues I have engaged with in this role as well as the answers which dialogue with other disciplines has led me to as regards these issues. First, I present the field, aim, and structure of the thesis. Second, I explicate what I mean by ‘philosophizing with’ and point out four different ways in which one can undertake this venture. Philosophy may dialogue with many disciplines in many areas; the ones I have engaged with fall within the learning field. To further the comprehensibility of my more specific concerns within this field, in the third section I articulate the philosophical outset from which I speak: With inspiration from Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Wittgenstein and Dreyfus, I hold a view of human existence as being-in-the-world and an approach to knowledge as fundamentally involving tacit aspects. This outset is developed throughout the thesis, in dialogue with other disciplines. In section four, I briefly present the resulting philosophical view of knowledge. In section five, I articulate more specifically a number of the issues within the learning field which have helped me develop this view. Section six conversely summarizes some key points which my philosophizing with on these issues have led me to contribute to the disciplines. I end with a few concluding remarks on concerns to engage with in continuation from the results of my thesis.

In this text, I re-elaborate the narratives and oral speech of some of the social subjects (Guyanese Negroes, Macushi Indigenous and Wapishana, regional Brazilians) about the Rupununi Uprising. The narratives and oral speech of the interviewees on the subject are partially constituted by the fieldwork that originated the Ethnography built as a doctorate thesis in the frontier Brazil-Guyana. The intention is to contextualize, by means of these narratives, the realms of memory that make up the political landscape of the 60s in these two countries, since the political event called Rupununi Uprising, characterized as one of the most polemic period in Guyana’s history. In Brazil, milestones of this decade were the military dictatorship and the leftist movements. In Guyana it is a moment of the process of independence and of secession fights.

Metodologias Ativas. Mentalidades Matemáticas. Representação Social. Matemática. AbstractThe high dropout rate in engineering courses, followed by the "repulse" some students feel when they face the base subjects of Differential and Integral Calculus are frequently based on pre-defined conceptions or incorporated into the teaching of Mathematics and the belief that some that are not born with sufficient ability to learn these subjects. That is the core of this bibliographic survey which aims to position a doctorate research for the purpose of identifying the frailty of research developed in the country involving these themes. A literature survey has been made on Capes' Catalogue of Thesis and Dissertations and on the Brazilian Digital Library of Thesis and Dissertations combining the seven descriptors defined on the doctorate research that expand a former study (Silva, 2019). After the systematic bibliographic survey combining the terms, works were not found, based on these two databases, to the present data, that were related to the seven keywords. Being so, we believe that the path to be taken on the doctorate research may aid the professors that teach the subjects of Differential and Integral Calculus, more specifically the subjects focused on Pre-Calculus, to students in a social vulnerability situations in educational contexts that involve innovative methodologies. Keywords: Pre-Calculus. Active Methodologies. Mathematical Mindsets. Social Representation. Mathematics.

This special issue of the Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences addresses some of the key challenges and new developments of the recent education reforms in Cyprus. The aim of this issue is to give the researchers an opportunity to share their academic studies. First of all, I would like to thank all who have contributed to this issue. There are different focuses. For example, Vasfi Tugun explored the proficiency perceptions and attitudes of the teachers towards Technologies of learning about the tablets in order to integrate the mobile learning technologies and to use the tablet PCs in the educational environments in an efficient way. On the other hand, Cigdem Hursen and Dursun Salaz, determine the effects of authentic childhood games in teaching English. The study group of the research consists of 43 5 year old kindergarten students. The study was carried out in the first semester of 2014-2015 academic year. An experimental method was used in this study to state the effects of teaching English vocabulary through authentic childhood games. There were 22 students in the experimental group and 21 students in the control group. To the experimental group the topics were taught through authentic childhood games. Same topics were taught to the control group through traditional methods. According to the results, it is seen that teaching English vocabulary through authentic childhood games have positive impact on academic success. Also, Deniz Ozcan and Leyla Zaroglu determine the opinions of students training in department of gifted education towards education of gifted individuals. The research was formed and conducted in quantitative design. This study was achieved in spring term in 2014-2015 academic year in Near East University. Twenty six teacher candidates training education department of the mentioned university participated to the research. The teacher candidates formed from first and second grade students. Interview form was used as data collection tool. During interview, when necessary semi structured interview was provided to teacher candidates with additional questions. Each of the questions were prepared to obtain different data. The data firstly were formed as written by researcher on computer then analyzed by using content analysis chosen from quantitative research techniques. Each of the answers that teacher candidates gave, were grouped in terms of similarity and interpreted, also one or two answers that were given to each questions, were presented in the same way. In order to increase the reliability of study, the opinions of specialist were taken into consideration and common points were determined. In addition to these, Zeynep Genc carried out a study on teachers’ candidates. This study was aimed to determine the opinions of students in the department of primary school teaching about preparation and use of materials through teaching practice which is done within Teaching Technologies and Material Designing (TTMD) course in this study. Cigdem Hursen, Ayten Koruroglu, Sultan Bahali and Naziyet Mercan aim of this study is to determine the new trends concerning curricula and instruction. The articles that are published in journals of SSCI and ERIC databases are taken into the scope of this study. The new trends regarding relevant literature are tried to be identified by analysing 3079 articles in total through the content analysis method. Also, the articles that are taken into the scope of the study are limited with the articles published between years of 2005 and 2014.Mukaddes Sakalli Demirok, Meryem Besgul and Basak Baglama aim of this study was to examine postgraduate thesis studies conducted between the years of 2009 and 2014 in special education field in Turkey based on various variables and figure out how many of these thesis is related with hearing disability. A total number of 146 postgraduate thesis have been found in the thesis scanning center of Higher Education Council (YOK) of Turkey. 126 of these thesis were master thesis and 20 of them were doctorate thesis. The results confirm the literature of Psychology as a helping profession, and indentify three cores of helping sense: cure, orientation and mediation. It notes that Psychology is known as plural, parting from modernity own values, based on a model of Binary nature of subjectivity that implies in answer the demands of the hegemonic biomedical and neoliberal speech, which could not see the singularities process of the late modernity, described by Stuart Hall.

Abstract:
Frank Tannenbaum (1893–1969) was a man of many parts. He was brought up by immigrant parents on a New England farm, which may explain his sympathy for small farmers. At the same time, however, he embraced the cause of urban workers and became a Wobbly and an anarcho-syndicalist theorist. In fact, Tannenbaum first made a name for himself as an advocate for the unemployed, the homeless, and the imprisoned—the latter after being jailed for his role organizing those at the bottom of United States urban society. Yet he also studied with John Dewey at Columbia University and got a doctorate at the Brookings Institution with a thesis on the Mexican agrarian reform, inaugurating three decades of engagement with the Mexican Revolution. During this time Tannenbaum became the friend and adviser of ministers and presidents.

Abstract:
The history of Ukrainian and Russian translations of the playwright by Maurice Maeterlinck is full of well-known names like Lesya Ukrainka, Natalia Kobrynska, Valeriy Briussov and Nikolay Minskiy. Nevertheless some aspects of translations show several problems in misunderstanding of the realities of the French text. Our purpose was to make the comparative analysis of the Russian and Ukrainian translations of Ariane et Barbe-Bleue, a key text of the Maeterlinck’s theatre. The linguo-poetic and linguo-aesthetic analysis were used. The study have shown that the Slavonic translators have omitted the onomastic sign Ariadne revealed in the letters of the author to his German translator Friedrich von Oppeln-Bronikowski where the mythic sign is clearly presented in order to make a transvalorization of the mythological intertext. The original results of our study was used for our new translation of the play Ariane et Barbe-Bleue for the Ukrainian readers published in 2007 then our analysis was developed in the doctorate thesis dedicated to the mythological intertext in the first theatre by Maurice Maeterlinck and in the chapter of our thesis of doctor of science devoted to the study of Greek mythology in the poetry of the Belgian Nobel Prize winner.

Abstract:
Citation practice provides justification for arguments and allows a writer to indicate a rhetorical gap for her/his research and adopt a tone of authority. Claims must be supported with evidence, and writers must demonstrate an understanding of approaches and knowledge in their fields of specialisation, in order to persuade the examiners that the thesis is worthy of the award of a doctorate (Thompson, 2005b). Candidates need to keep the adequate interpersonal relationship with the immediate audience (the examiners). They have to evaluate the previous research in an area of study and to be respectful with previous claims from authorities in the disciplines. They also need to position themselves in relation to other disciplinary members and highlight their individual claims. This paper investigates contrastively how interactional resources of citation and, in particular reporting verbs, are deployed in the literature review chapters of PhD theses written in English and in Spanish.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate/explore the possibilities of nationwide networked electronic theses in Japan. Design/methodology/approach – The main points of the revised degree regulations, the activities of related organizations corresponding to the revised degree regulations, and the future direction of networked electronic theses which can be realized due to the network of institutional repositories are described and explained. Findings – In Japan, following the revision of the degree regulations, nationwide electronic thesis networks will be formed, which are rarely observed in other countries, and an infrastructure will be constructed, by which institutional repositories in Japan can be harvested by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. A well-established community of institutional repositories has enabled this achievement to take place. Originality/value – Very few national laws and regulations oblige a person who has been conferred a doctorate to publicize the thesis through the internet. There are only a few countries where the standard for metadata was established and metadata harvesting using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting is being performed, providing one-stop services through portal sites. Therefore, this case study on the possibilities of nationwide networked electronic theses attributable to policies and the innovations of the repository network in Japan can provide useful information not only for persons in charge of digitizing dissertations but also for those concerned about open access generally.

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the range of classification of variation coefficient in experiments with sugarcane. For this study, some of the variables that are mostly used by researchers of the culture were considered. The data was obtained after extensive bibliographical revision from scientific journals, data base from the improvement program of sugarcane from the Federal University of Viçosa, master dissertations, doctorate thesis and technical reports. Classification ranges were proposed according to the Costa method, in which is based the use of a median and pseudo-sigma. The variables tons of stalks per hectare and tons of pol per hectare presented the highest ranges of the classification of the coefficients of variation, while the variable percentage of sucrose presented the lowest range. All of the variables presented specific ranges of classification, showing the need to consider, in the classification of coefficients of variation, the nature of the variable being studied.

Abstract The natural soil used in filling the embankment of the road communications is characterized by the following factors: humidity, porosity, toughness. For certain factor values that describe the soil state is distinguished a certain soil behavior under the influence of the external forces applied through static or dynamic mechanical means. In this study are presented the numeric simulation results of the soil-compactor interaction based on the complex and nonlinear rheological model proposed by the author in the result of the elaborated doctorate thesis, that follows the real soil characteristics (elastic, dissipative and plastic) on those of the compaction equipment (with a single vibrating roll). The model was harmonised and granted in accordance with the results obtained from the processing of the experimental data. For the simulation model was used the specialized software package Matlab (Simulink, SimMechanics). The obtained results revealed the real behavior of the equipment and its action on the compacted soil.

Abstract:
The Council of Sufi Orders under The State Fatwā Department of Negeri Sembilan recognizes the legitimacy of the Naqshabandiyyah ʿĀliyah Shaykh Nāẓim al-Qubrūṣī Sufi order in 2018, accordance to sufism epistimology. However, a doctorate thesis passed in 2020 entitled “The Thought of Sheikh Nāẓim al-Qubruṣī according to the Ahl al-Sunnah Wa al-Jamāʿah” claims a possibility that Shaykh Nāẓim’s belief contradicted the Ahl al-Sunnah Wa al-Jamāʿah beliefs. This was due to the use of the word “unity” found in the books of Shaykh Nāẓim, his acceptance and belief in waḥdah al-wujūd, and the connection of these two notions with pantheism. To ascertain this claim, this research re-assessed the three notions mentioned above. This study analysed each thesis paragraph that claims the existence of “unity,” waḥdah al-wujūd, and pantheism ideas. Then, this research returns to the original speech of Shaykh Nāẓim to look at the full context of the meaning. This research also applied the lexical-semantic approach and academic views. In the debate on waḥdah al-wujūd, this research compares Shaykh Nāẓim with the writings of Imam al-Junayd and Imam al-Ghazālī. It also referred to Sufi scholars’ definitions of Sufistic terms such as ittiḥād. Regarding to the issue of pantheism, this research discovered authentic sources showing that Shaykh Nāẓim rejected this view. After conducting a critical analysis of the thesis, this research roots out that accusation of supporting the idea of “unification” resulted from a lack of in-depth understanding of the “unity” word. The accusation of waḥdah al-wujūd also occurs due to the misunderstanding of maqām al-fanā’s concept. While the accusation of pantheism occurs due to the author's ineptness to differentiate between the Sufi school and pantheism. In conclusion, the allegation that Shaykh Nāẓim holds views that contradict the Ahl al-Sunnah is an invalid claim.

Abstract:
The article considers the history of creation of a previously unpublished work by E.M. Meletinsky, preceding the first draft of his doctorate thesis and monograph “The hero of fairy tale”. A typewritten copy of it was preserved among the documents seized during the scholar’s second arrest in 1949 and later donated to the library of Petrozavodsk University. During his time as a post-graduate student in the Central Asian University (then-name of National University of Uzbekistan) Meletinsky was already interested in historical poetics and folklore studies. That resulted in the “Fairytale plots in question about their everyday meaning” article. The fact that it was the first ever Meletinsky’s work on fairy tales is obvious not only from the documents and memoirs of Meletinsky himself, but from the very structure of the article: in the first chapters the author, taking a problem posed by A.N. Veselovsky in “The poetics of plots” – “to check Russian data about the third sibling, the little fool, the cinderwench against other people’s fairy tales” – as a basis, dwells extensively the motif of the youngest sibling in world fairy tales and the history of studying it, but in the last chapter he moves to the analysis of another motif – the tales about a “poor orphan”. Namely that motif, being in stadia way older, takes centre stage not only in the 1948 thesis, but in all of Meletinsky’s works on fairy tales prior to the second arrest, both published and unpublished.

Abstract:
The main aim of the present study is to build knowledge and understanding regarding the linguistic use of hedging by Malaysian speakers of English in academic spoken discourse and, more specifically, doctorate students presenting their thesis in the candidature defense. It looks not only to describe the specific nature of spoken academic hedging in Malaysia but to make inroads into identifying cultural factors that shape the way this hedging takes place. To realize these aims, a corpus-based investigative case study that used both quantitative and qualitative methods was used. Transcriptions of candidature defenses and semi-structured interviews regarding the nature of doctoral candidature defense were used to gather the data. The study found that national culture and the dynamic power distance in the educational culture surrounding the defense had an effect on the interpersonal hedging used by Malaysian speakers and the gap in hedging use between panel members and candidates. Disciplinary culture was also observed to influence hedging, specifically in referencing other work and testing theory to build an argument.

Abstract:
AbstractThis book unfolds different moments that occur during the research work carried out by PhD students. It explains the topics, standpoints, what kind of relationship can be stablished with the thesis director, writing issues, the publications to be made, oral presentation in seminars and congresses, taking a stand in research and the researcher’s commitments. This anti-manual goal is to stablish a bond between personal experience, conditioned by writing and the institutional context, and the research process as a whole, in which the doctorate students often feel lost. Neves, Risale. "From Thesis to Teaching: The Practice of Using Rocks in Architecture and the Challenge of "Making it Different"." Key Engineering Materials 848 (June 2020): 157–64. http://dx.doi.org/10.4028/www.scientific.net/kem.848.157.

Abstract:
About 20 years ago, the lack of knowledge of the Brazilian architects about the use of rocks as natural materials was being commented which may have contributed to the problems of the stone coatings of buildings in several cities, compromising their original features and the beauty of many works. Professionals did not seek technological data on rocks and students were not instructed on such subjects in classrooms. The choice of these materials was supposedly empirical. Between 2010 and 2012 it was possible to obtain access to information about the contents of materials teaching in the architecture courses of Brazil, and also to inquire whether or not there was knowledge by architects active in the market on the subject, interviewing 64 professionals in 13 states from the country. The architects would be authors of architectural projects of large buildings and responsible for the materials specifications. Conclusion: there is no teaching directed to the use of rocks in Architecture in the country courses and architects never learned formally about such subject, fact that justified in a doctorate thesis proposal, the creation of the first discipline on the subject in the Course of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Pernambuco, UFPE, Brazil.

Abstract:
Brazil is the main receiver of Syrian nationals seeking for asylum in Latin America. In spite of the distance from Syria comparatively to European countries, Brazil is often chosen as a destiny country due to two main reasons: the humanitarian visa granted to people affected by the instability in Syria, that demands less requirements than a regular visa, and the possibility of acquiring a working permit even before the refuge status is granted. However, Syrian refugees/refuge seekers face challenges in accessing labor market due to language barriers, difficulties in proving previous professional qualifications and the discrimination against refugees of arab origin. The public sphere is by law responsible for promoting integration policies for refugees, and has covered issues such as juridical assistance for this population, but doesn’t have clear actions in integrating refugees in the labor market. The organized civil society realizes a valorous work in this sense, with many initiatives to assist refugees inserting in the labor market, such as language courses, resume creating and raising of awareness to companies about the hiring of refugees. Since these institutions don’t count on enough financial support from the public sphere, they vastly rely on volunteer workforce, which despite being very helpful, many times is not specialized in dealing with refuge issues. By performing a qualitative review of literature in the subject, extracted from books, articles, journal articles, doctorate thesis, bachelor thesis and newspaper databases both in Portuguese and in English, this research intends to figure out how the civil society organizations are assisting Syrian refugees to integrate in the labor market in Brazil, filling the gap left by the public power, and often suffering from overburdening.
