Levy, Foster, Rebecca Pyles, Celia Szarejko, and Linda Wyatt. "Developing an Electronic Repository for Undergraduate Theses." DigitalCommons@University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2012. https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/nchchip/160.

Abstract:
Undergraduate honors theses represent an intellectual asset that a university should recognize and manage as such. However, when theses were submitted exclusively in print copies, the work often faded into obscurity, forgotten by all but the student and mentor. While theses for advanced degrees have been accessible for many years via interlibrary loan or abstract services, similar access options have been unavailable for undergraduate theses because these works are most often associated with and maintained by the institutional honors program without involvement or support from the institution’s library system. At best, an index of undergraduate theses might be available to the public, but print copies—often the only versions of theses—are traditionally housed in honors and are difficult, if not impossible, to obtain. As undergraduate honors theses have become more commonplace and as online access to research has become virtually universal, honors programs do a disservice to their students, faculty, and the public if they do not provide access to the original scholarship produced by undergraduates. Furthermore, introducing undergraduates to electronic publication provides educational value by exposing them to the publishing demands they will likely encounter in their future education and professional careers. Two additional benefits to students are that an electronic publication saves the student time and expense in producing their final work and, most importantly, makes their work available worldwide to potential research partners and employers. An electronic thesis repository provides several instruction-based opportunities to advance learning. For example, courses within an honors college often enroll students from a variety of disciplines. In research methods courses, students can easily examine examples of theses to familiarize themselves with the writing styles and formatting in their discipline. Similarly, in a colloquium-style course that addresses diverse topics, students can use the repository to become familiar with research approaches and writing styles outside of their discipline; this is a particular advantage for undergraduates because, as they progress in their course of study and certainly once they begin graduate or professional programs, they rarely have time for this type of cross-disciplinary interaction. In addition, faculty in diverse disciplines can assign repository reviews, either in courses or when mentoring honors students, to demonstrate the level of scholarship expected in honors thesis work. Although these goals could be accomplished using hard copies, our current students are more comfortable with and more likely to access electronically available materials. East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has made undergraduate theses available to the campus community and general public through an electronic repository and catalog maintained by the university library. The electronic system we implemented and others of similar quality provide a user interface developed for manuscript submission, review, and approvals. This type of system takes students’ research experience to a final level of completion and assures that they learn how to navigate a process analogous to manuscript submission. Because adapting our institution’s system for graduate theses and dissertations was not a feasible option and we could find no general guidelines to direct our efforts, we developed our own undergraduate honors thesis repository, and we hope that our efforts in this process will provide insights and guidelines for other institutions.

Fang, Yi. "Theses on information imperfection, market failure and remedy." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24560.

Full text
Abstract:
The theses focus on the market failure induced by information imperfection. We study this type of market failure separately in the context of corporate equity finance and long-term bilateral transactions. In the equity finance market, adverse selection may arise due to the asymmetric information of firms’ value. It has been argued that firms, in response to the inefficiency induced by adverse selection, may signal their unobservable values through choices of equity flotation methods. In the context of UK open offers and rights offers, we provide evidences for this signalling hypothesis. We find that information content significantly falls after both rights offers and open offers, which suggests resolution of asymmetric information with equity offers. Our result suggests there exists a non-pooling equilibrium through firms’ choices of equity flotation methods and that open offers are employed by good firms to signal quality to the public. Besides, with the measures of information content of trades, we establish some patterns of adverse selection in London SEAQ. Information content of trades is related to trade size. Small trades are not informative, while median trades and large trades are informative. For the comparison between purchases and sales, large purchases are more informative than large sales, while median purchases are less informative than median sales. These results suggest informed traders handle large purchases and large sales with different strategies, and that market makers are less harsh to traders with positive private information. We set up a hypothesis of the pattern of human intermediation in London SEAQ: human intermediation works in a “carrot” format when private information is more costly to obtain and adverse selection is more severe; it works in a “stick” format when information of a stock can be generated for less less cost and market makers face fewer threats from informed trading. In most long-term bilateral trading relationships, transaction parties have to make investments which are geared towards their partners. Once the investments are sunk, a party can not rely on market to discipline his partner, and his investments return will be vulnerable to expropriation. This problem, known as the hold-up problem, will discourage parties from making socially desirable investments. We reconsider the hold-up problem by allowing a party to separately invest in his outside option in order to capture its value. We find that after considering this investment option, the hold-up problem is potentially more severe than previously observed. Parties to a transaction may make investments which are not productive from a social point of view. More importantly, the inefficient investment may even crowd out relationship specific investments, which may result in relationship-breaking in a highly productive relationship.

Abstract:
The ability to extract figures and tables from scientific documents can solve key use-cases such as their semantic parsing, summarization, or indexing. Although a few methods have been developed to extract figures and tables from scientific documents, their performance on scanned counterparts is considerably lower than on born-digital ones. To facilitate this, we propose methods to effectively extract figures and tables from Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs), that out-perform existing methods by a considerable margin. Our contribution towards this goal is three-fold. (a) We propose a system/model for improving the performance of existing methods on scanned scientific documents for figure and table extraction. (b) We release a new dataset containing 10,182 labelled page-images spanning across 70 scanned ETDs with 3.3k manually annotated bounding boxes for figures and tables. (c) Lastly, we release our entire code and the trained model weights to enable further research (https://github.com/SampannaKahu/deepfigures-open).
Master of Science
Portable Document Format (PDF) is one of the most popular document formats. However, parsing PDF files is not a trivial task. One use-case of parsing PDF files is the search functionality on websites hosting scholarly documents (i.e., IEEE Xplore, etc.). Having the ability to extract figures and tables from a scholarly document helps this use-case, among others. Methods using deep learning exist which extract figures from scholarly documents. However, a large number of scholarly documents, especially the ones published before the advent of computers, have been scanned from hard paper copies into PDF. In particular, we focus on scanned PDF versions of long documents, such as Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs). No experiments have been done yet that evaluate the efficacy of the above-mentioned methods on this scanned corpus. This work explores and attempts to improve the performance of these existing methods on scanned ETDs. A new gold standard dataset is created and released as a part of this work for figure extraction from scanned ETDs. Finally, the entire source code and trained model weights are made open-source to aid further research in this field.

Olivier, Aletta Petronella. "Authorial voice as a writing strategy in doctoral theses." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/65596.

Full text
Abstract:
Voice is not a new concept in writing; however, it is relatively new in the field of academic writing. The main aim of this research is to determine how voice as a social construct is understood and perceived by doctoral students and supervisors from the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences at a South African university. The focus is on the challenges of exhibiting an authorial voice in doctoral writing in particular, with the aim of informing a pedagogical framework of voice that might serve as a foundation for further development of an instructional framework. The term ‘voice’ started to appear in North American composition writing in the mid-1960s as a mark of self-discovery, individualism, and expressivism. However, the emergence of social constructivism led to a marked decrease in the emphasis on individual voice in favour of regarding voice as socialised and constructed. The post-2000 voice era became more nuanced and established a definite niche for voice in academic discourse. The three approaches that influenced written voice most significantly are individualised voice, powered by the expressivist approach; socialised voice, which embraces voice as multi-dimensional and dialogic and embedded in Bakhtin’s heteroglossia; and voice as empowerment, represented by the Academic Literacies Approach. Except for its historic evolution the notion of voice was impacted by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as a theory of language. Two partially operationalised models, grounded in social constructivism and SFL, provided the substance for designing a heuristic framework for voice: the Engagement Framework, situated in the Appraisal Framework of Martin and White (2005) and Hyland’s (2008a) model of stance and engagement. With the decline of the expressivist approach a number of theoretical and empirical studies propagating a pedagogical approach started to appear. Although these studies validate the need for a visible voice pedagogy, voice has yet to be operationalised as student friendly pedagogical tool. The following research questions guided the research: 1. How is authorial voice theorised in linguistics and applied linguistics? 2. Has the notion of ‘voice’ been adequately operationalised in academic writing contexts? 3. What guidance on developing a voice pedagogy is found in the scholarly literature on writing instruction in higher education? 4. How is the notion of voice understood by supervisors and doctoral students? A qualitative case study was conducted to determine the understanding and perceptions of voice by supervisors and doctoral students by means of semi-structured interviews. The data were systematically analysed and coded using qualitative content analysis. The qualitative data analysis software program ATLAS.ti.2 was used for this purpose. The data yielded four main categories: 1. Assumptions about voice as non-negotiable in doctoral writing; 2. Enablers of voice; 3. Impediments of voice, confirming voice as complex and unstable; 4. Opinions on voice as construct that substantiated gaps in the literature. As the findings point to a need for a pedagogy of voice these categories were translated into parameters for a pedagogy of negotiated voice. The pedagogical model integrates the theory-based heuristic as well as pedagogical attempts at measuring voice and the findings of the empirical study.

Delost, Matthieu. "Analyse théorique et numérique pour des problèmes quasistatiques régularisés de contact avec frottement." Nice, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004NICE4112.

Abstract:
Our interest lies in the bilateral contact between a deformable elasto-visco-plastic solid and a rigid foundation, with Tresca or Coulom friction law. Existence results (and uniqueness results for Tresca law) for associated variational problems are classical. Nevertheless, they are not valid anymore in the frame of aour study, for we have regularized a term in the inequations. We first present the physical background and the mathematical tools related to the problems. We then settle a constructive method for the analysis of variational inequalities involving a regularized convex term. Thus, we obtain existence and uniqueness results, asymptotic convergence results and approximation result concerning theoretical numerical analysis. Then we apply those results to bilateral contact problems involving Tresca or Coulomb friction law. Finally, we present numerical results, in which we compare two ways to compute time discretization and we study the influence of different parameters on the calculus of solutions

Abstract:
This thesis examines the construction and deconstruction of home. These poems explore this theme largely through the poet's relation to geography and the natural world of the Great Lakes region, friends and family, experiences centered in human interconnectedness, traveling, the impact of technology, orientation in a cosmic space, the ways in which culture shapes and reshapes the one living inside it, and how in a 21st century world, one must still seek to show compassion for other living creatures. Through the utilization of metaphor, narrative, and imagination, this thesis journeys from the poet's home of Indiana to her ancestral roots of Ireland before returning to America with a more complex sense of identity as well as a renewed vision for the future.

Uba, Sani Yantandu. "Authorial stance in accounting PhD theses in a Nigerian university." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/18754/.

Full text
Abstract:
Stance has emerged in the literature on academic writing in a major way, and as an important and pervasive mechanism by which academic writers ‘inhabit’ their writing and give it distinctiveness (Baynham, 2011; 2014). In this study, I investigate what linguistic markers of stance accounting PhD authors are more frequently used in Bayero University Kano, Nigeria and what factors might constrain or influence their use. I draw primarily on a corpus-based textual analysis but complement this with a consideration of institutional and disciplinary factors which might explain why the writers investigated write as they do. I employ nine participants: six accounting PhD authors and three accounting PhD supervisors. I compile a corpus of six accounting PhD theses from Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria (BUK corpus), and an accounting sub-corpus: four accounting UK PhD theses (UK corpus) for comparative analysis with the BUK corpus. The result of comparative corpus-based textual analysis between BUK theses shows that there are certain similarities and differences in terms of using stance markers. For example, in terms of similarities all the six authors use higher frequencies of booster than the other categories of stance markers in their result sections; whereas in their conclusion section they all use higher frequencies of hedges than the other categories of stance markers. They also use few restricted typologies of each category of stance markers. On the other hand, there are certain differences in using stance markers, for example, only two out of the six authors use explicit self-mention features. Overall comparative results show that three authors use higher frequencies of hedge than the other categories of stance markers; whereas two authors use higher frequencies of booster than the other categories of stance markers; and one author use same frequency for both booster and hedge. The result of comparative corpus-based textual analysis between the BUK and UK corpora still shows there are certain similarities and differences that both corpora have higher frequencies of hedges than the other categories of stance markers. On the other hand, UK corpus has higher frequencies of attitude markers, neutral stance markers, explicit self-mention features; whereas BUK corpus has higher frequencies of hedge and booster. The contextual data however suggests that several factors might have constrained some of the accounting PhD authors (BUK) to use explicit self-mention features. Some of the factors are: the traditional practices of the University and Department discouraging the students to make themselves explicitly present through the use of personal pronouns; unequal power relationship between lecturers and students; a lack of explicit assumptions of academic writing, as well as absence of explicit statements or rules provided regarding the use of linguistic markers of stance in feedback provided during the supervision process. This study proposes an additional analytic category of stance into Hyland’s model, influenced by Mushin’s factual epistemological stance. The new category is neutral epistemic stance. Unlike previous studies which deal only in parts of theses, this study deals with theses as complete texts in order to add our understanding and knowledge on what linguistic markers of stance are more frequently used in the discipline of accounting across whole macrostructures of the theses particularly at BUK. On the basis of these findings, this study recommends a more broadly a genre-sensitive approach to the teaching of academic writing, including explicit teaching of linguistic markers of stance rather than traditional grammar only. It also recommends raising of awareness of the students on the institutional/social practices in relation to the construction of the PhD thesis, such as the norms and conventions of the discourse community.

Thesis, understood as the final product of university education, is a new study subject of increasing importance due to its contributions to science and the production of new knowledge. This article provides a detailed panorama of the characteristics of themes, methodology and quality of bibliographical sources found in undergraduate and master's theses on education. The documentary analysis is based on a sample of 86 undergraduate theses and 37 master's theses belonging to a private university in metropolitan Lima. While undergraduate and master's theses differ in aims and scope, the results yielded differences in indicators related to theme and research methodology, such not being the case regarding indicators on the use of bibliographic sources. This demands that programs define thesis quality standards and indicators for each level of university education.

Nice, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003NICE4090.

Full text
Abstract:
Interferometric techniques use the phase difference (or interferogram) between two radar images acquired with two slightly different look angles, to extract information about the surface topography. The difficulty consists in recovering the absolute phase from the recorded one, which is only defined modulo 2 PI. This is the “phase unwrapping” step, which consists in adding the missing integral cycles to obtain a continuous result. Bus this process is complex because of the presence of noise. We propose an anisotropic diffusion equation that incorporates a noise model. The use of a specific tensor preserves the structures of the image. The filtered interferogram is then segmented using a level set approach, where typical local structures are taken into account via the use of the afore-mentioned tensor. All discontinuities of the image correspond tio the zero level of the same function. Then we present an automatic method to distinguish each fringe from the interferogram, and unwrap it

What motivates one to write a thesis? This study assessed whether presenting one’s master’s thesis proposal at a thesis colloquium increased the probability of Industrial/Organizational I/O) Psychology graduate students completing their thesis on time (i.e., finishing their thesis as they finished their graduate coursework). This study also examined the relationship between presenting one’s thesis proposal at a thesis colloquium and different forms of motivated regulation and three basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness). Participants included 94 master’s level I/O Psychology alumni from four universities. As expected, students who presented at a thesis colloquium had a higher rate of on-time thesis completion. Students who presented at a thesis colloquium also reported a higher level of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation toward their thesis, and a lower level of amotivation toward their thesis compared to students who did not present at a colloquium. Reported level of relatedness toward individuals who helped work on the thesis was higher for those who presented at a thesis colloquium than for those who did not present. However, there were no differences between those who did or did not present at a colloquium in terms of reported competence and autonomy.

European vocational training is a society stake. Intermediation is effective in the construction of the knowledge of the actors on reality, the total information system and contributes to the dynamics of the programme (95-99). Methodological und epistemological reflexion deals with the determination of strategies of access and representation in the mobility projects and the pilot projects. The investigation led in national agencies and in Brussels relates to the obstacles in industry and the qualitative evaluation. Partnership generates to emergence of an infocom based conception, the creation of conditions of access in the cognitive process of transnational training of mobility, of intellectual tools of indexing-research adapted to the user. The intervention of documentalists, asset of the french education system, sets the need for competences and ICT in initial training. The study of the information system in the environment aims at understanding the mechanisms of the programme and its effects, conceptualisation through the treatment of sources. Systemic and functional analysis accounts for the position of the documentation authority in the organization, social and economic interaction. The association of indexing methods allows visibility of contents as an alternative to thematic vision. Classifications, the representation as an obstacle on the way of information process and participation are analysed. Conceptual accessibility faces the management of the ideas and aims at the sharing and produktion of knowledge in a logic of collective intelligence. Communication in the UE sees unity in diversity and the democratic joint decision with the information science speech in the institution-user-actor-citizen interaction. Abstract:

Although we live in a society abundant with images, the subject of illustrations in scientific communication seems to have become a blind spot. The study of scientific communication is an interdisciplinary field, where written and visual language is studied separately from one another. The aim of this master thesis is to break with tradition and look at the use of illustrations, their form and frequency, in a random selection of Swedish contemporary doctoral theses to make an attempt to explain why some scholars do not use illustrations as much as others. The found graphics are discussed in their faculty and departmental context, and the aspects of page design, electronic availability, and publishing tradition are also included in this discussion. By looking at some activities surrounding the author of a doctoral thesis, such as writers’s manuals, computer graphic tools, and the role of librarians, proof was found to support a genre and activity theory, as described by Charles Bazerman. This study presents an overview of illustrations occurring in dissertations in a way that was not done before, opening up for further studies about the form and function of scientific illustrations as important carriers of information.

Abstract:
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are based on innovative technologies that had revolutionized the methods in which we interact with the environment; i.e., through sensing the physical (e.g., fire motion, contact) and chemical (e.g., molecular concentration) properties of the natural surroundings. The hardware in which utilized by WSNs is rapidly evolving into sophisticated platforms that seamlessly integrate with different vendors and protocols (plug-n-play). In this thesis, we propose a WSN framework which provides assistance with monitoring environmental conditions; we focus on three main applications which include: a. Air-quality monitoring, b. Gas-leak detection, and c. Fire sensing. The framework involves four specifications: 1. Over the air programming (OTAP), 2. Network interconnections, 3. Sensors manageability, and 4. Alarm signaling. Their aim is to enhance the internetwork relations between the WSNs and the outside-world (i.e., main users, clients, or audience); by creating a medium in which devices efficiently communicate, independent of location or infrastructure (e.g., Internet), in order to exchange data among networked-objects and their users. Therefore, we propose a WSN-over-IP architecture which provides several renowned services of the Internet; the major functionalities include: live-data streaming (real-time), e-mailing, cloud storage (external servers), and network technologies (e.g., LAN or WLAN). WSNs themselves operate independently of the Internet; i.e., their operation involve unique protocols and specific hardware requirements which are incompatible with common network platforms (e.g., within home network infrastructure). Hybrid technologies are those which support multiple data-communication protocols within a single device; their main capabilities involve seamless integration and interoperability of different hardware vendors. We propose an overall architecture based on hybrid communication technology in which data is transmitted using three types of protocols: 802.11 (Wi-Fi), 802.15.4 and Digimesh (WSN).

Abstract:
Deleuze’s short essay on the societies of control has, one could say, infected thought on the present. Few serious reflections on today’s media society seem immune against the plausibility and evidence of Deleuze’s deliberations, not least because they use the force of abstraction to draw theoretical concepts from empirical facts, allowing for an anticipation of future developments without getting lost in details. Deleuze argues that a society whose media and technologies provide an apparatus of seamless connectivity and global scope has irreversible effects on the way we perceive, think, and create order. At the same time, the naturalization of these effects progresses via retroaction – making us forget it has ever been different. With his text, Deleuze stands in the midst of this naturalization and neutralization process: This may be why it is inevitably a “postscript” to the societies of control – it takes the artificial position of the “post” in order to be able to look at one’s own contemporary culture from an alienating distance, as Foucault once demanded for every description of the present (1999: 91). This “post,” then, by no means signals a retrospective look at a process already completed; instead, Deleuze gives an exaggerated account of the early digitization age from an artificial retrospective standpoint, which, ironically, will also have been one “after” writing.

Jude, Palakh Mignonne. "Increasing Accessibility of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) Through Chapter-level Classification." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/99294.

Abstract:
Great progress has been made to leverage the improvements made in natural language processing and machine learning to better mine data from journals, conference proceedings, and other digital library documents. However, these advances do not extend well to book-length documents such as electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). ETDs contain extensive research data; stakeholders -- including researchers, librarians, students, and educators -- can benefit from increased access to this corpus. Challenges arise while working with this corpus owing to the varied nature of disciplines covered as well as the use of domain-specific language. Prior systems are not tuned to this corpus. This research aims to increase the accessibility of ETDs by the automatic classification of chapters of an ETD using machine learning and deep learning techniques. This work utilizes an ETD-centric target classification system. It demonstrates the use of custom trained word and document embeddings to generate better vector representations of this corpus. It also describes a methodology to leverage extractive summaries of chapters of an ETD to aid in the classification process. Our findings indicate that custom embeddings and the use of summarization techniques can increase the performance of the classifiers. The chapter-level labels generated by this research help to identify the level of interdisciplinarity in the corpus. The automatic classifiers can also be further used in a search engine interface that would help users to find the most appropriate chapters.
Master of Science
Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) are submitted by students at the end of their academic study. These works contain research information pertinent to a given field. Increasing the accessibility of such documents will be beneficial to many stakeholders including students, researchers, librarians, and educators. In recent years, a great deal of research has been conducted to better extract information from textual documents with the use of machine learning and natural language processing. However, these advances have not been applied to increase the accessibility of ETDs. This research aims to perform the automatic classification of chapters extracted from ETDs. That will reduce the human effort required to label the key parts of these book-length documents. Additionally, when considered by search engines, such categorization can aid users to more easily find the chapters that are most relevant to their research.

Concerns regarding environmental issues have been growing, which in turn have triggered the growth of Green information technology (IT). However, relatively few studies have contributed to this field and have assessed the current developments in this field. Considering the aforementioned issues, this thesis presents a systematic review of 62 Taiwanese theses on Green IT to gain a better understanding of the Green IT field between 2001 and 2018 through content analysis based on the extended framework from Malhotra et al. (2013). Our findings can be summarized as follows: (1) the evolutionary path of Taiwanese theses on Green IT is similar to that suggested by Malhotra et al.; (2) several theses have focused on linking Green IT with sustainability; and (3) the current themes and focus of Green IT theses are still in the early stages, with their focus on case-based, solution-oriented, micro-level-driven analysis and less attention to the design and impact level. On the basis of the findings, implications are drawn at the end of this thesis.
