Abstract:
In this thesis we study the problem of computing probability distribution of rare events on disordered systems, i.e. systems made up of heterogeneous interacting agents, using tools from statistical physics. We explore several areas of statistical physics, from traditional subjects such as the random field Ising model to random walkers on graphs to more recent developments such as systemic risk in financial networks, using simple models to explore how interactions and network structure shape the occurrence of rare events, and how these rare events in turn shape our macroscopic perceptions. We present exact analytical results using generating functional methods when possible, and propose approximations where needed, and we compare our results with simulations. Finally, we discuss how our models can be modified and extended to answer new questions.

Abstract:
Consider an iterated function system (IFS) that does not necessarily contract uniformly, but instead contracts on average after a finite number of iterations. Under some technical assumptions, previous work by Barnsley, Demko, Elton and Geronimo has shown that such an IFS has a unique invariant probability measure, whilst many (such as Peigné, Hennion and Hervé, Guivarc'h and le Page, Santos and Walkden) have shown that (for different function spaces) the transfer operator associated with the IFS is quasi-compact. A result due to Keller and Liverani allows one to deduce whether the transfer operator remains quasi-compact under suitable, small perturbations. The first part of this thesis proves a large deviations result for IFSs that contract on average using skew product transfer operators, a technique used by Broise to prove a similar result for dynamical systems. The remaining chapters introduce a notion of 'coupled IFSs', an analogue of the traditional coupled map lattices where the base, unperturbed behaviour is determined by an underlying dynamical system. We use transfer operators and Keller and Liverani's theorem to prove that quasi-compactness of the transfer operator is preserved for 'product IFSs' under small perturbations and for coupled IFSs. This allows us to prove a central limit theorem with a rate of convergence for the coupled IFS.

Abstract:
In this work, we propose an approach to detect and capture undesirable and unexpected process parameter variations in a circuit post-fabrication. We rely on delay measurable paths to detect deviations in path delays post-fabrication. We propose an algorithm to isolate suspect gates along failed paths using fault free delay measurable paths. Compact data structures like ZBDDs are used to store and manipulate paths. Experimental analysis using the proposed algorithm provides statistics of isolated gates along paths in various benchmark circuits. Further, we propose an algorithmic model that analyzes the suspect gates based on their topology along a path and reports the process parameter deviation for each such suspect gate.

Abstract:
The effects of the collision of a Near-Earth-Object(NEO) with the Earth could be catastrophic on a local, regional or global scale depending on the size of the NEO. Therefore, there is considerable interest in determining ways to mitigate the threat posed by these objects. This dissertation presents a method utilizing a tethered ballast mass for altering the trajectory of a NEO with an Earth-intersecting orbit so that it avoids hitting the Earth. The method is simulated using four different methods. The first method assumes a rigid massless tether. Using this method, a parametric study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the technique over a wide parametric space. Specifically, this study provided results in terms of deviation rates over the parametric space. After this, the massless inelastic method was used to study actual miss distances assuming the asteroid was on a collision course with the Earth. After this, a study was conducted, using the massless, inelastic model, in which the mass of the ballast was made constant, in order to determine the minimum tether length required to divert asteroids simulated based on actual asteroids from NASA's potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) database, again assuming a massless inelastic tether. Finally, it was desired to determine how relaxing the constraints of the massless inelastic model would affect system performance. Therefore, three more models were introduced: massive inelastic, massless elastic, and massive elastic. Using these models, a study was performed to explore the effects of the changed model on system performance and to compare the results in terms of deviation, with those of the massless inelastic model. This was desired because the numerical cost of the new models was much higher than that of the massless inelastic model, so rather than conduct the study over a much larger parametric space, a smaller space was chosen, so that the results could be compared.

Abstract:
Stochastic programming offers a way to treat uncertainty in decision problems. In particular, it allows the minimization of risk. We consider mean-risk models involving deviation measures, as for instance the standard deviation and the semideviation, and discuss these risk measures in the framework of stochastic dominance as well as in the framework of coherent risk measures. We derive statements concerning the structure and the stability of the resulting optimization problems whereby we emphasize on models including integrality requirements on some decision variables. Then we propose decomposition algorithms for the mean-risk models under consideration and present numerical results for two stochastic programming applications.

Abstract:
This thesis uses advanced methods from statistical physics to investigate collective effects in game theoretical models with a large number of players. Specifically, I study the strategy distributions in a large game that models how agents choose among double auction markets. I provide a classification of the possible mean field Nash equilibria, which include potentially segregated states where an agent population can split into subpopulations adopting different strategies. I compare this classification with the results of Experience-Weighted Attraction (EWA) learning, which in the long run leads to Nash equilibria in the appropriate limits of large intensity of choice, low noise (long agent memory) and perfect imputation of missing scores (fictitious play). Non-trivially, depending on how the relevant limits are taken, more than one type of equilibrium can be selected. These include the standard homogeneous mixed and heterogeneous pure states, but also heterogeneous mixed states in which different agents play different strategies that are not all pure. I also investigate the influence of heterogeneity in traders’ behaviour on the emergence of segregation described previously. The theoretical machinery is then extended from the study of systems with two markets, to the analysis of multi-agent systems where traders can choose between multiple markets. The last part of the thesis focuses on how the interaction among players in a repeated game can be represented as an evolutionary process in a “population of ideas”. I propose the interpretation of reinforcement learning as a stochastic process in a finite population of this type. The resulting birth-death dynamics has absorbing states and allows for the extinction of ideas, which marks a key difference with mutation-selection processes. I characterise the outcome of evolution in populations of ideas for several classes of symmetric and asymmetric games.

Abstract:
Structural health monitoring systems have a great potential for cost saving and safety improvement in different types of structures. One of the most important tasks of these systems is to identify damage at an early stage of its development. A variety of methods may be used to identify, locate, or quantify the extent of damage or fault in a structural or mechanical component. However, the preferable method is the one which maximises the probability of detecting the flaw, while also considering feasibility of in-situ testing, ease of use and economic factors. Cracks are one of the common defects in structural components that may ultimately lead to failure of structures if not detected. The presence of cracks in a structure brings about local variations in the stiffness of the structure. These variations cause the dynamic behaviour of the cracked structure to be different from that of a healthy one. Vibration-based damage detection methods have attracted considerable attention over the past few decades. These methods generally use changes to the physical properties of structures for the purpose of crack detection. In this thesis, two new vibration-based methods have been developed for damage detection in beam-like and rotor-type structures. The first method performs the entire signal processing required for crack detection in time domain. It is based on assessing the normality of vibration responses using the normal probability plot (NPP). The amount of deviation between the actual and normal distribution of measured vibration responses was calculated along the length of the structure to localise the crack. The second proposed method converts the vibration responses into frequency domain for further processing. Excitation of the cracked structure at a given frequency always generates higher harmonic components of the exciting frequency due to the breathing of the crack. This method uses the operational deflection shape of the structure at the exciting frequency and its higher harmonics to identify the crack location. Avoiding complicated signal processing in frequency domain is the main advantage of the first method. However, more precise identification of crack locations can be obtained through the second method. Generally, both methods have the advantage of being easy, reference-free and applicable to in-situ testing for any structure. The concept and computational approach of both methods along with their validations through numerical and experimental examples have been presented. Moreover, different input excitations have been used to evaluate the capability of the developed methods in detecting the crack location(s).

Vulcan, Julie A. "Going dark : care-full castings and delight-full deviations for a networked fiction in an everyday world." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.7/uws:56832.

Full text
Abstract:
Going dark is a technical term within the world of theatre. It has the double meaning of lights out during rehearsal and a temporary venue closure for maintenance and resetting. In this way it speaks to matters of care in the form of attending to one’s environs while resisting the excess of twenty-four hour productivity. This thesis appropriates going dark as a practice and methodology. In both instances it considers how deviation from the familiar; steady observation; and a kind of slow liveliness might reveal delight-full throughways for a less human-centric worlding. This project emerges from a confluence of driving commitments-digital media, the dark, and speculative fiction - embedded in the habitual and affective processes of everyday activities. Each concern additionally has the capacity to disturb the mundane in ordinary and extraordinary ways. How then might such an everyday landscape be harnessed to explore speculative projects embedded in the digital fabric of social media as a type of textual creative resistance? To assist me in this enquiry I travel along the submerged pathways of stinkhorn fungi, lively soil, and social media networks in conversation with the experimental online project Going DARK. Engaging a fictocritical framework I draw sustenance from the disruptive practices of feminist science fiction writers and look to the messy earth-bound provocations of Anna Tsing, Donna Haraway, and Maria Puig de la Bellacasa. Threaded below the carefully composed registers are the influential figurations of Rosi Braidotti’s nomadic subject and the processes of becoming and assemblage engaged in the work of Deleuze and Guattari. Consequently my thesis travels multiple lines of curious deviation to inform, borrow, expand or temporarily submerge a story. Viewed through a posthuman lens it seeks to find delight and direction in the inbetween dark and dirty spaces. Equally it is an endeavor to interrupt the off-world utopian dream embedded in idealistic paternal views of escape to another planet in order to make us accountable for our actions on the world we are in now.

Abstract:
Classical attribution theorists developed models of causal attribution that reflected their belief that people were primarily interested in attribution accuracy. These models did not consider contextual factors such as relationships and societal norms which resulted in the emergence of several empirical puzzles many of which are related to the use of consensus information. This study investigates whether the puzzle of the differential treatment of consensus information can be solved if it is assumed that people are primarily concerned with social features of the attribution setting rather than strict attribution accuracy. This study experimentally tests the role of key aspects of the social context such as the impact of social strategies in Kelley’s model of attribution to explore whether some of its empirical anomalies could have their origins in the social aspects of attribution in research contexts. The study found that participants were 2.63 times more likely to provide ‘inaccurate’ responses when there was a risk that the accurate answer would be socially disruptive. Findings from this study suggest that participants prioritise the implications of the social context over attribution accuracy.

Knight, Gerold C. "Crisis management : aligning scripts and actors : strengthening crisis response capabilities by minimising process deviation." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.7/uws:52940.

Full text
Abstract:
The present business resilience paradigm has expanded to embrace the processes and routines employed by a business to remain viable, sustain growth and recover (if required) in what for many people has become a complex global operating environment. Sutcliffe (2003, p. 2) defines resilience as “the maintenance of positive adjustment under challenging conditions” and the combination of proactive routines such as enterprise risk management and reactive routines such as crisis management create the overarching umbrella of business resilience. Whether they are proactive or reactive, ostensive routines form the framework and script from which organisations operate and strive for such ‘positive adjustment’. The business challenge, particularly in crisis management, is to ensure the effective interpretation and performance of ostensive routines during events that have the potential to play out on the world stage. This research examines an observed phenomenon in business, which is the deviation between ostensive and performative routines during crisis management responses. Human nature is such that there will often be a difference between the script and the performance. In crisis management, issues are created when the gap between the performance and ostensive routine grows too large, or, following an acting metaphor, where actors forget what they have practiced in rehearsals and create their own script. Such deviation has been observed repeatedly and most critically in the first 24 to 48 hours of a response when it is arguably the most important period in which to follow the script and apply the correct routines. The aetiology of deviations between a crisis management script and its production is the focus of this research. This addresses a gap in the crisis management literature which, while spread across multiple streams including leadership and teams, is at times incoherent. Utilising a case study approach focusing on the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, this research analyses the potential causes of process deviation. In evaluating two specific dynamics the research collected empirical data to address the question of how ostensive and performative routines interact in a crisis management situation and what factors contribute to deviations from ostensive routines. By answering this question, a theory is developed to explain the deviation.
