Abstract:
The annual number of completed theses which can be reasonably described as having urban themes has remained quite steady in recent years. In the lists of the Institute of Historical Research, for example, it is possible to identify 58 theses as having urban themes in the return for 1985, 41 theses in the 1986 return and 50 theses in that for 1987. It is true that in many cases such theses are not written as contributions to urban history specifically, but nevertheless they can provide much useful information and new insights on urban processes and town life even when the urban aspect of the study is incidental to the main theme. This is especially true of the selection made for this year's review which focuses more than usually on theses concerned directly or indirectly with aspects of urban society and politics in the past, and with a particular emphasis on the history of the urban working class. The review covers mostly theses completed in 1986–7 with some late additions from earlier years. It is based necessarily on the abstracts except for about a third of the theses noticed where it has been possible to examine the text. However, the aim of the review is to indicate the interest which a thesis might have for urban historians rather than to give a comprehensive assessment – which is probablynappropriate for unpublished work.

Abstract This study documents a large number of Masters theses written by students of the International Islamic Universtiy Malaysia over 19 years, from 1998 to 2016. A total of 282 Masters theses were written in the Arabic language during the aforementioned period. The main themes covered in the theses were identified by the researchers. The jurisprudence of transactions and Islamic finance were the two most prominent themes, with 87 theses written (30% of all theses written in the 19 year period). Family jurisprudence came in second place, with 63 theses (22% of all theses), followed in third place by Usuli studies and juristic maxims, which were the main themes for 44 theses (15%). The fourth major theme was found to be crime and ÍudËd, with 23 theses written. The four aforementioned themes accounted for 75% of all Arabic Masters theses written between 1998 and 2016. Due to time and other constraints, the researchers were unable to carry out a comprehensive review of all theses written; instead, the researchers focused on a total of 81 Masters theses written on the Jurisprudence of Transactions (40 theses), and Islamic finance (41 theses) written between 1998 and 2010. The aforementioned theses represented 49% of all theses written in the 12 year period. Emphasizing the importance of University theses during the process of writing literature reviews is an established norm that is attributed to the fact that such theses represent the latest developments in research. This study is expected to help future researchers locate relevant literature in the form of Masters theses, and consequently carryout effective literature reviews. This inductive study does not represent a comprehensive review of all theses written between 1998 and 2010. However, the researchers managed to document all theses written in the two aforementioned themes during the 12 year period. Key words: Masters thesis, research trends, jurisprudence of transactions, Islamic finance, family jurisprudence.

Abstract:
The Bachelor's program in Early Childhood Islamic Education (PIAUD) at UIN Saizu Purwokerto was established in 2014. Student theses for the PIAUD program began appearing in the UIN Saizu repository in 2018. The research objective is to describe the research trends in the theses of PIAUD students at UIN Saizu Purwokerto from 2018 to 2022. This study is done using a quantitative approach through bibliometric analysis. The application used for data mining is Zotero, and data visualization is carried out using VOSviewer version 1.6.18. The thesis data source is from repository.uinsaizu.ac.id, with a total of 272 theses processed. The research results indicate that the trends in the themes of the theses by PIAUD students at UIN Saizu Purwokerto from 2018 to 2022 align with the program's focus, revolving around early childhood themes, optimization, and creativity development. Four (4) clusters were formed. No words or phrases indicating a concentration on Islamic Education were observed in the titles of the theses by PIAUD students at UIN Saizu Purwokerto. However, one word in the cluster indicates an Islamic theme, which is the word "RA" (Raudhatul Athfal), representing Islamic educational institutions at the early childhood level.

Abstract:
Different critical positions have emerged around the restructuring of space in postmodernity. I consider two sets of literature: the sceptical thesis (theses) of the ‘ageographia’ in Sorkin's edited collection Variations on a Theme Park and Foucault's affirmative thesis (theses) of the ‘heterotopia‘. These authors' works relate to a number of themes relevant to this paper: democratic public space, public space (comparing Canada and the USA) and its demise, spatial utopias, and the public library as public space and as ‘other’ space. Vancouver's newest civic landmark, the Vancouver Public Library, provides an illustrative case study with both ageographic and heterotopic qualities.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to review the postgraduate theses on science/physics education in Turkey to guide the teaching of the sound concept. Although the theses examined within the scope of this study belong to a certain region, the previous literature shows us that the learning difficulties/misconceptions are generally independent of culture. Thirty-three theses in the database of The Council of Higher Education Thesis Center were analyzed inductively in the semi-systematic review process. For this, the stages of content analyses were used: Elimination and coding, placing them in themes, ensuring reliability and validity were followed respectively. Unit of analyses was conclusions of the theses and suggestions of the theses. In conclusion, both conventional and contemporary approaches have a positive effect on achievement or conceptual change on the sound concept. On the other hand, students and teachers/ candidates, in general, cannot relate their knowledge of sound to daily life, their level of knowledge is inadequate, and they have misconceptions/errors and confusions. It is beneficial to consider this situation in education. The most important output of this study is the lists of possible misconceptions or confusion about the concept of sound. Teachers and researchers can use these lists in their lessons or research. Keywords: education, physics, science, sound, thesis

Abstract:
Ten years ago, conceptual history was still relatively unknown in Chinese academic circles. But within just a single decade, it has already emerged as a very popular field among scholars. When broaching conceptual history, the first thing to make clear is that, whether we’re speaking of a research field or a methodology, this is a scholarly tradition rooted in Germany. Hence, if we are to apply conceptual historical methods to China and carry out transcultural conceptual historical research here, we must understand the basic connotations of conceptual history. Reinhart Koselleck’s introduction to 8 volumes of Basic Concepts of History: An Historical Lexicon of Political and Social Terms in Germany (Geschichtliche Grundbegriffe: historisches Lexikon zur politisch-sozialen Sprache in Deutschland) is an essential text in conceptual history (1972, Bd.1). In this work, Koselleck proposes three These (theses) for conceptual history: concepts are historical, criteria for the “four changes” of basic historical concepts, and the “saddle period.”

Abstract:
Undergraduate honors theses represent an intellectual asset that a university should recognize and manage as such. However, when theses were submitted exclusively in print copies, the work often faded into obscurity, forgotten by all but the student and mentor. While theses for advanced degrees have been accessible for many years via interlibrary loan or abstract services, similar access options have been unavailable for undergraduate theses because these works are most often associated with and maintained by the institutional honors program without involvement or support from the institution’s library system. At best, an index of undergraduate theses might be available to the public, but print copies—often the only versions of theses—are traditionally housed in honors and are difficult, if not impossible, to obtain. As undergraduate honors theses have become more commonplace and as online access to research has become virtually universal, honors programs do a disservice to their students, faculty, and the public if they do not provide access to the original scholarship produced by undergraduates. Furthermore, introducing undergraduates to electronic publication provides educational value by exposing them to the publishing demands they will likely encounter in their future education and professional careers. Two additional benefits to students are that an electronic publication saves the student time and expense in producing their final work and, most importantly, makes their work available worldwide to potential research partners and employers. An electronic thesis repository provides several instruction-based opportunities to advance learning. For example, courses within an honors college often enroll students from a variety of disciplines. In research methods courses, students can easily examine examples of theses to familiarize themselves with the writing styles and formatting in their discipline. Similarly, in a colloquium-style course that addresses diverse topics, students can use the repository to become familiar with research approaches and writing styles outside of their discipline; this is a particular advantage for undergraduates because, as they progress in their course of study and certainly once they begin graduate or professional programs, they rarely have time for this type of cross-disciplinary interaction. In addition, faculty in diverse disciplines can assign repository reviews, either in courses or when mentoring honors students, to demonstrate the level of scholarship expected in honors thesis work. Although these goals could be accomplished using hard copies, our current students are more comfortable with and more likely to access electronically available materials. East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has made undergraduate theses available to the campus community and general public through an electronic repository and catalog maintained by the university library. The electronic system we implemented and others of similar quality provide a user interface developed for manuscript submission, review, and approvals. This type of system takes students’ research experience to a final level of completion and assures that they learn how to navigate a process analogous to manuscript submission. Because adapting our institution’s system for graduate theses and dissertations was not a feasible option and we could find no general guidelines to direct our efforts, we developed our own undergraduate honors thesis repository, and we hope that our efforts in this process will provide insights and guidelines for other institutions.

Fang, Yi. "Theses on information imperfection, market failure and remedy." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24560.

Full text
Abstract:
The theses focus on the market failure induced by information imperfection. We study this type of market failure separately in the context of corporate equity finance and long-term bilateral transactions. In the equity finance market, adverse selection may arise due to the asymmetric information of firms’ value. It has been argued that firms, in response to the inefficiency induced by adverse selection, may signal their unobservable values through choices of equity flotation methods. In the context of UK open offers and rights offers, we provide evidences for this signalling hypothesis. We find that information content significantly falls after both rights offers and open offers, which suggests resolution of asymmetric information with equity offers. Our result suggests there exists a non-pooling equilibrium through firms’ choices of equity flotation methods and that open offers are employed by good firms to signal quality to the public. Besides, with the measures of information content of trades, we establish some patterns of adverse selection in London SEAQ. Information content of trades is related to trade size. Small trades are not informative, while median trades and large trades are informative. For the comparison between purchases and sales, large purchases are more informative than large sales, while median purchases are less informative than median sales. These results suggest informed traders handle large purchases and large sales with different strategies, and that market makers are less harsh to traders with positive private information. We set up a hypothesis of the pattern of human intermediation in London SEAQ: human intermediation works in a “carrot” format when private information is more costly to obtain and adverse selection is more severe; it works in a “stick” format when information of a stock can be generated for less less cost and market makers face fewer threats from informed trading. In most long-term bilateral trading relationships, transaction parties have to make investments which are geared towards their partners. Once the investments are sunk, a party can not rely on market to discipline his partner, and his investments return will be vulnerable to expropriation. This problem, known as the hold-up problem, will discourage parties from making socially desirable investments. We reconsider the hold-up problem by allowing a party to separately invest in his outside option in order to capture its value. We find that after considering this investment option, the hold-up problem is potentially more severe than previously observed. Parties to a transaction may make investments which are not productive from a social point of view. More importantly, the inefficient investment may even crowd out relationship specific investments, which may result in relationship-breaking in a highly productive relationship.

Kahu, Sampanna Yashwant. "Figure Extraction from Scanned Electronic Theses and Dissertations." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/100113.

Full text
Abstract:
The ability to extract figures and tables from scientific documents can solve key use-cases such as their semantic parsing, summarization, or indexing. Although a few methods have been developed to extract figures and tables from scientific documents, their performance on scanned counterparts is considerably lower than on born-digital ones. To facilitate this, we propose methods to effectively extract figures and tables from Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs), that out-perform existing methods by a considerable margin. Our contribution towards this goal is three-fold. (a) We propose a system/model for improving the performance of existing methods on scanned scientific documents for figure and table extraction. (b) We release a new dataset containing 10,182 labelled page-images spanning across 70 scanned ETDs with 3.3k manually annotated bounding boxes for figures and tables. (c) Lastly, we release our entire code and the trained model weights to enable further research (https://github.com/SampannaKahu/deepfigures-open).
Master of Science
Portable Document Format (PDF) is one of the most popular document formats. However, parsing PDF files is not a trivial task. One use-case of parsing PDF files is the search functionality on websites hosting scholarly documents (i.e., IEEE Xplore, etc.). Having the ability to extract figures and tables from a scholarly document helps this use-case, among others. Methods using deep learning exist which extract figures from scholarly documents. However, a large number of scholarly documents, especially the ones published before the advent of computers, have been scanned from hard paper copies into PDF. In particular, we focus on scanned PDF versions of long documents, such as Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs). No experiments have been done yet that evaluate the efficacy of the above-mentioned methods on this scanned corpus. This work explores and attempts to improve the performance of these existing methods on scanned ETDs. A new gold standard dataset is created and released as a part of this work for figure extraction from scanned ETDs. Finally, the entire source code and trained model weights are made open-source to aid further research in this field.

Olivier, Aletta Petronella. "Authorial voice as a writing strategy in doctoral theses." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/65596.

Full text
Abstract:
Voice is not a new concept in writing; however, it is relatively new in the field of academic writing. The main aim of this research is to determine how voice as a social construct is understood and perceived by doctoral students and supervisors from the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences at a South African university. The focus is on the challenges of exhibiting an authorial voice in doctoral writing in particular, with the aim of informing a pedagogical framework of voice that might serve as a foundation for further development of an instructional framework. The term ‘voice’ started to appear in North American composition writing in the mid-1960s as a mark of self-discovery, individualism, and expressivism. However, the emergence of social constructivism led to a marked decrease in the emphasis on individual voice in favour of regarding voice as socialised and constructed. The post-2000 voice era became more nuanced and established a definite niche for voice in academic discourse. The three approaches that influenced written voice most significantly are individualised voice, powered by the expressivist approach; socialised voice, which embraces voice as multi-dimensional and dialogic and embedded in Bakhtin’s heteroglossia; and voice as empowerment, represented by the Academic Literacies Approach. Except for its historic evolution the notion of voice was impacted by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as a theory of language. Two partially operationalised models, grounded in social constructivism and SFL, provided the substance for designing a heuristic framework for voice: the Engagement Framework, situated in the Appraisal Framework of Martin and White (2005) and Hyland’s (2008a) model of stance and engagement. With the decline of the expressivist approach a number of theoretical and empirical studies propagating a pedagogical approach started to appear. Although these studies validate the need for a visible voice pedagogy, voice has yet to be operationalised as student friendly pedagogical tool. The following research questions guided the research: 1. How is authorial voice theorised in linguistics and applied linguistics? 2. Has the notion of ‘voice’ been adequately operationalised in academic writing contexts? 3. What guidance on developing a voice pedagogy is found in the scholarly literature on writing instruction in higher education? 4. How is the notion of voice understood by supervisors and doctoral students? A qualitative case study was conducted to determine the understanding and perceptions of voice by supervisors and doctoral students by means of semi-structured interviews. The data were systematically analysed and coded using qualitative content analysis. The qualitative data analysis software program ATLAS.ti.2 was used for this purpose. The data yielded four main categories: 1. Assumptions about voice as non-negotiable in doctoral writing; 2. Enablers of voice; 3. Impediments of voice, confirming voice as complex and unstable; 4. Opinions on voice as construct that substantiated gaps in the literature. As the findings point to a need for a pedagogy of voice these categories were translated into parameters for a pedagogy of negotiated voice. The pedagogical model integrates the theory-based heuristic as well as pedagogical attempts at measuring voice and the findings of the empirical study.

Abstract:
A thesis to obtain a university bachelor's degree reflects students' interests and preferences, as well as specific learnings achieved to enable their future employability. This study analyzes gaps between human resources (HR) topics in undergraduate theses from a management school at a prestigious university in Peru and trends and challenges pointed out by HR consulting firms. The study scope is descriptive, based on content analysis with co-word analysis method, of 119 theses and 35 reports from 5 consulting firms between 2011 and 2022. Findings reveal significant gaps, that raise the urgency of reviewing of undergraduate research objectives and the need to stimulate student interest in developing knowledge, skills and competencies aligned with the expectations and challenges of the job market, such us the external organizational challenges, leadership, and technology's impact on HR management.
