Abstract:
We present an investigation on thermodynamics of two different types of black holes viz. Kiselev black hole (asymptotically flat) and Taub–NUT (non-asymptotically flat) black hole. We compute the thermodynamic variables like black hole’s Hawking temperature and entropy at the black hole’s event horizon. Further, we derive the heat capacity and examine it to study the thermal stability of the black holes. We also calculate the rate of emission, assuming the black holes radiate energy in terms of photons by tunneling. We graphically represent all the parameters including the rate of emission of the black holes and interpret them physically. We depict a comparative study of thermodynamics between the aforesaid types of black holes. We find the existence of a transition of phase. Finally, we obtain the quantum corrected thermodynamics on the basis of general uncertainty principle and it is seen from the quantum-corrected entropy that it contains the logarithmic term. We offer comparative studies on joint effect of generalized uncertainty principle parameter [Formula: see text] along with the concerned black holes’ parameters on the thermodynamics.

Abstract:
Thermodynamics and kinetics are two important scientific fields when studying chemical reactions. Thermodynamics characterize the nature of the material. Kinetics, mostly based on spectroscopy, have been used to determine reaction schemes and identify intermediate species. They are certainly important fields, but they are almost independent. In this review, our attempts to elucidate protein reaction kinetics and mechanisms by monitoring thermodynamic properties, including diffusion in the time domain, are described. The time resolved measurements are performed mostly using the time resolved transient grating (TG) method. The results demonstrate the usefulness and powerfulness of time resolved studies on protein reactions. The advantages and limitations of this TG method are also discussed.

Abstract:
Prodigiosin is a natural pigment which has antimicrobial activity and produced by a microorganism, but it is insoluble in water, thereby limiting their application in textile dyeing. With the study of the Prodigiosin’s kinetics and thermodynamics on PET, the feasibility of using Prodigiosin as disperse dyes was discussed. The thermodynamics results show that the up-take of Prodigiosin in PET fiber is linear to the dye bath concentration, with increasing temperature, the distribution coefficient decreases and the thermodynamic affinity of the dye has little gown up, the enthalpy and entropy of dyeing were -2.51[kJ/mol] and 5.05[J/(mol·K)] respectively, which show that PET dyeing with prodigiosin is a exothermic process and the diffusion coefficient increases with the temperature rise. The activation energy calculated with the Arrhenius equation is 6.09 [kcal /mol].

Abstract:
Description of the recognition specificity between proteins and nucleic acids at the level of molecular interactions is one of the most challenging tasks in biophysics. It is key to understanding the course and control of gene expression and to the application of the thus acquired knowledge in chemotherapy. This review presents experimental results of thermodynamic studies and a discussion of the role of thermodynamics in formation and stability of functional protein-RNA complexes, with a special attention to the interactions involving mRNA 5' cap and cap-binding proteins in the initiation of protein biosynthesis in the eukaryotic cell. A theoretical framework for analysis of the thermodynamic parameters of protein-nucleic acid association is also briefly surveyed. Overshadowed by more spectacular achievements in structural studies, the thermodynamic investigations are of equal importance for full comprehension of biopolymers' activity in a quantitative way. In this regard, thermodynamics gives a direct insight into the energetic and entropic characteristics of complex macromolecular systems in their natural environment, aqueous solution, and thus complements the structural view derived from X-ray crystallography and multidimensional NMR. Further development of the thermodynamic approach toward interpretation of recognition and binding specificity in terms of molecular biophysics requires more profound contribution from statistical mechanics.

The mixed adsorption of k adsorbates from solution on energetically homogeneous surfaces is studied by means of lattice statistical thermodynamics. The adsorption layer is considered to behave as a non-electrolyte bulk solution composed from k adsorbates and solvent. On the basis of this assumption the adsorption isotherms and their state equations are determined by means of the lattice theory of strictly regular solutions and Flory–Huggins statistics. The thermodynamic restrictions imposed when these models have to be applied to real systems are also determined and discussed.

Landau's formalism of statistical mechanics [following L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz, Statistical Physics (Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1980)] is applied to the quasi-particle model of quark–gluon plasma. Here, one starts from the expression for pressure and develop all thermodynamics. It is a general formalism and consistent with our earlier studies [V. M. Bannur, Phys. Lett. B647, 271 (2007)] based on Pathria's formalism [following R. K. Pathria, Statistical Mechanics (Butterworth-Heinemann, Oxford, 1977)]. In Pathria's formalism, one starts from the expression for energy density and develop thermodynamics. Both the formalisms are consistent with thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Under certain conditions, which are wrongly called thermodynamic consistent relation, we recover other formalism of quasi-particle system, like in M. I. Gorenstein and S. N. Yang, Phys. Rev. D52, 5206 (1995), widely studied in quark–gluon plasma.

Abstract:
The paper addresses physics of thermodynamic fluctuations in temperature and energy. These fluctuations are interrelated and, hence, can affect various micro- and macro systems. It is shown that the thermodynamic uncertainty relation must be taken into account in the physics of superconductivity, in quantum computations and other branches of science, where temperature and energy fluctuations play a critical role. One of the most important applications of quantum thermodynamics is quantum computers. It is assumed that in the near future the state structures will create a specific quantum cryptocurrency obtained using quantum computing. The quantum cryptocurrency exhibits two main features: the maximum reliability (quantum protection against hacking threats) and the possibility of state control (at the moment, only large scientific state centers have quantum computers). The paper reviews the studies aimed to theoretically prove the validity of the thermodynamic uncertainty relation. This relation connects fluctuations in temperature and energy of a system. Other similar relations are considered, including the relationship between fluctuations in pressure and volume, in entropy and temperature, and others. The main purpose of the paper is to validate the thermodynamic analogue of the uncertainty relation that interconnects temperature and energy fluctuations. Experimental data was obtained on the basis of the study of the transport properties of semiconductor devices – transistors. In the experiment, the transport properties of a pair of semiconductor transistors placed on a single silicon crystal were studied. In this system, one transistor was used to determine temperature fluctuations, and the other one was employed to estimate energy fluctuations. The key role of the thermodynamic uncertainty relation in modern thermodynamics has been clarified. The performed experimental studies confirm the validity of the thermodynamic uncertainty relation.

The paper focuses on the thermodynamic aspects of CaO–FeO–SiO2 and CaO–FeO–SiO2–MnO slag oxidation in air and sulfur transport through CaO–Al2O3–SiO2 slag. Thermodynamics of slag oxidation in air opens potential new areas in terms of focus on effective recovery of iron oxide from slag. The slag transport studies are of fundamental nature and focuses on a novel technique to calculate the diffusion of species through slag by analyzing its corresponding concentration in the metal phase.

Abstract:
The thesis reports on an experimental and computational study of kinetic heating at hypersonic speeds. Of particular interest is the transition of the laminar boundary layer to a state of turbulent motion. The experiments are performed in a Mach 9 Gun tunnel with a 5° semi-angle cone geometry. Twelve hemispherically blunted nose radii are tested at three unit Reynolds numbers. Testing has indicated that as the nose is progressively blunted, the transition region moves downstream. Further amounts of bluntness enhance other instability mechanisms and transition events are witnessed in the near nose regions. There are clearly two transitional regimes, denoted the "small bluntness" and "transition reversal" regime, respectively. This study investigates the structure of the transitional boundary layer in both regimes using thin film heat transfer rate gauges and liquid crystal surface thermography. The heat transfer measurements indicate that the small bluntness transition regime is governed by the rapid formation, growth and merging of turbulent events. Transition occurs over hundreds of boundary layer lengths. The reversal regime transition process is characterised by the birth of turbulent events in the nose and near nose regions. The temporal formation rate of the events is governed by roughness. In a low roughness environment, transition occurs over many model lengths. Increasing the roughness level, increases the spot formation rate, and transition is witnessed immediately downstream of the spherical nose region. The role of roughness is further explored using boundary layer trips. The trip causes a laminar wake which rapidly undergoes transition and forms a turbulent wedge. Event circumferential spreading angles are found for a variety of trip geometries and locations. The heat transfer distribution in the wedge is mapped using the thin film gauges. Computational work is used to perform laminar flow field predictions. Of interest is the entropy layer caused by the presence of the bow shock, and its interaction with the boundary layer. Heat transfer predictions in the transitional region are also performed aided with the experimentally obtained intermittency information.

Abstract:
The work in this thesis shows that it is possible to design a diffusion cell which will allow access to the flux and lag time of a permeant without the need for invasive sampling and that this novel cell is both sensitive and reproducible. It was also shown that the cell could be used in conjunction with both simple model membranes and more complex biological membranes, namely the epidermis. From the data achieved from the cell it was possible to derive a series of equations which allowed access to thermodynamic parameters such as ?H, ?G and ?S. An extension of this calculational approach revealed that manipulation of the van’t Hoff isochore, under the condition where enthalpy is constant over the temperature range, it should be possible to calculate the partition coefficient. Ultimately these parameters can be used in the description of structure activity relationships. The systems described in this thesis are of a complex biological nature consequently the returned data reflect this complexity. In order to utilise the data to their full potential some method for dealing with this complexity was sought. One approach widely discussed in the literature is that of chemometric analysis or soft modelling. Initial studies into the use of chemometric analysis proved positive for the data presented in this thesis, and suggested that formulation contributions from components with close absorbance maxima could be separated.

Abstract:
A double-pipe helical heat exchanger was studied numerically and experimentally for both heat transfer and hydrodynamic characteristics.
Results from the numerical trials show that the inner Nusselt numbers in the heat exchanger were similar to literature data, despite the different boundary conditions. Nusselt numbers in the annulus were correlated to a modified Dean number. It was shown that the thermal resistance in the annulus to be the greatest limiting factor for the heat transfer, and heat transfer rates could be increased by increasing the inner tube diameter.
The Prandtl number was shown to affect the inner Nusselt number; however the effects were much greater at low Dean numbers. These differences were attributed to the difference in the developing thermal and hydrodynamic boundary layers. The studies with the thermally dependent thermal conductivities showed that the Nusselt number correlated well with a modified Graetz number.
Thermally dependent viscosity had little effect on the heat transfer; however it affected the pressure drop. Furthermore, it was shown that by keeping the flow rate in the inner tube or the annulus constant, the pressure drop in that section can be affected by changes in the flow rate in the opposite section, due to the change in the heat transfer rate and hence the average temperature and viscosity of the fluid. Non-Newtonian fluids showed little effect on the heat transfer rates, though they significantly affected the pressure drop relations.
The uniformity of the residence time and the temperature distribution were both increased in the inner tube with increasing flow rates. It was shown that a smaller gap size in the annulus resulted in more uniform residence times. Temperature distributions in the inner tube and the annulus were affected by changes in the flow velocity in the opposite section, with lower flow rates resulting in more uniform temperature distributions. Implications of using parallel flow versus counterflow, heating versus cooling, and flow rate are discussed.
Overall heat transfer coefficients and Nusselt numbers were calculated for the experimental data. The inner and annulus heat transfer coefficients were determined using Wilson plots. The results were compared to the numerical data and literature values and showed reasonable agreement. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
Abstract A new set of MATLAB based functions have been written for providing fluid property data and solving thermodynamics problems. One function utilizes NIST property tables for pure real fluids (e.g. water, various refrigerants, propane, etc.), and provides desired properties when provided with any two other independent properties. Properties can be obtained for liquids, vapors, and two-phase mixtures. Another function provides properties for a range of pure ideal gases using NASA functions for specific heats. Enthalpies are referenced to include the heat of formation, so the function is useful for solving combustion problems. A third function utilizes the ideal gas function to provide ideal gas properties for dry air, assuming a mixture of 78% N2, 21% O2, and 1% Ar by volume. A fourth function uses the air and real fluid functions to provide properties for moist air. Additional functions are available to generate property plots. All functions can be used with the SI or the U.S. Customary unit systems. The functions are described, and examples are provided in which they are used to solve thermodynamics problems. When used in conjunction with built-in MATLAB commands, the new functions are useful for parametric and optimization studies. The full package, including function codes and data files, requires 2.5 MB of disk space and is available at no cost.

The 2017 Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Summer Study Program theme was Ice-Ocean Interactions. Three principal lecturers, Andrew Fowler (Oxford), Adrian Jenkins (British Antarctic Survey) and Fiamma Straneo (WHOI/Scripps Institution of Oceanography) were our expert guides for the first two weeks. Their captivating lectures covered topics ranging from the theoretical underpinnings of ice-sheet dynamics, to models and observations of ice-ocean interactions and high-latitude ocean circulation, to the role of the cryosphere in climate change. These icy topics did not end after the first two weeks. Several of the Fellows' projects related to ice-ocean dynamics and thermodynamics, and many visitors gave talks on these themes.
