Full textLocated in the Phlegraean Fields (Campania, Italy), Baiae was renowned for its steam and thermo-mineral springs, making it a favourite resort for the Roman aristocracy. The ancient thermal station concentrated luxurious villae and baths built and remodelled between the end of the Republic and 3rd c. around a volcanic lake, now open to the sea. Although the site suffered the effects of bradyseism and was partly buried by the Monte Nuovo’s eruption in 1538, the remains were still visited during the Grand Tour. Excavated in the 1930-1940s, the monumental complexes constitute the 40 hectares of the current archaeological park and preserve in situ architectural facings (wall-paintings, stuccos, mosaics, opera sectilia, sculptures, and various furniture). This study aims to document, analyse and put into their architectural context these mostly unpublished decorations: most of them are difficult to read, and their interpretation has required the use of computer graphics methods, resulting in graphic reconstructions. Chronological phases have been determined thanks to the decoration’s analysis. The architectural re-contextualisation, supported by recent plans, also led to the identification of the various spaces and to a socio-economic interpretation of the site

Full textThis thesis would to enlighten aspects of the thermal development at the end of the middle ages (from the end of thirteenth century, to the beginning of the sixteenth century) mainly in the Sienese "contado" and in the territories of Lucca and Viterbo. The discussion tries to define the main caracteristics of thermal places around Siena (type of "habitat", baths, inhabitants' activities, visitors "séjour") and precises the modalities of thermal springs exploitation (administration, management etc. ). The author insists on the Siena's role in the development of thermalism and on its political consequences in the Sienese territory. The city proclaims and increases its leadership in the "contado"

Full textThe coastal area of the city of Ostia is characterized by a concentration of bath facilities built between the end of the 1st c. AD and the Late Antiquity period. The aim of this work is on the two main baths complexes discovered in the late 18 and mid 19 centuries, and extensively excavated in the first half of the 1970s: the Porta Marina Baths and the Terme Marittime. Their results were left unpublished, except for few specific studies on mosaic floors, architectonical elements and statuary. On these premises, the field research was organized in four steps: surveying, stratigraphic and technical studies; diachronic/synchronic analysis; interaction between maritime and coastal environments; and parallels with comparable contexts. Furthermore, new technologies have been involved for 3D surveying (UAV-photogrammetry, thermography, geophysical survey) thanks to the multidisciplinary project set up between CCJ, MAP and CEREGE, which turned into an innovative work in terms of methods of analysis.Concurrently, the investigation was extended on written sources based on the documentation of Ostia archives, Archivio Centrale di Stato, and Aerofototeca Nazionale. Ostia inscriptions preserved in the Vatican and Capitoline Museums, and recorded on the manuscripts of the late 18th century by G. Marini (Biblioteca Apostolica) and E.Q. Visconti (BNF Paris), were also included. The main objective was to understand the long-term evolution of these baths in the coastal townscape of Ostia, mainly based on architectural, functional, urbanistic and decor analyses. The project also inquires the legal status of these complexes, their commissioners and property, funding sources, and users
