Full textThe following text is a study of non-normative gender positions and sexualities in the architecture of the senses proposing and encouraging a new way of thinking about the built environment in terms of gender. My assumption is that a change in the way that we think about gender in the theory, practice and education of architecture also will affect the way we think about gender in relation to bodies. By showing that what we usually take for granted as a symbol for male masculinity in the expression of architectural space due to essentialist ideas about gender, can just as well be interpreted as a form of female masculinity, or an expression of butchness, my aim is to disrupt, dislocate and resignify patriarchal and heterosexist norms. I also touch briefly upon the construction of gender and racialization of sexuality within female masculinity in terms other than sex, such as class, race and ethnicity.
In an architectural analysis of Peter Zumthor’s bathhouse in Vals, Switzerland, I apply a newly constructed methodology, what I call non-essential phenomenology, joining aspects of both phenomenological ideas and post-structural thought based on texts by Juhani Pallasmaa and Judith Butler. Within this methodology, I devise several new concepts such as transmateria, material performativity, and sexual material performativity which are necessary for analyzing both the performative aspects of matter and the materialization of gender in bodies. By showing that more than one interpretation exists in the way we create and inhabit space, I present the possibility of shifting and resignifying earlier assumptions about sex/gender, dismantling essentialist thinking and disrupting heteronormative trends, while retaining the materiality of matter and body to create spaces which benefit all bodies, genders and sexualities.

Full textAs part of an aesthetic approach, this design-driven research crosses two methodologies to determine what is common in the perception of atmospheres. First, a case study led to the identification of ambiance's generators. These generators were used as an input into a creative process leading to the design of an architectural project. In a more detailed way, five different atmospheres present in the Vals' thermal baths were analysed in the book L'Eau et les rêves by Gaston Bachelard. This bachelardian bezel, that of the oneiric images of matter, served to identify some common generators of sensitive atmospheres. The literary symbols explained by Bachelard resonate in the water contained in the massive stone walls of Vals. Secondly, the construction of this dialogue between Gaston Bachelard and Peter Zumthor leads to the development of a Scotch whiskey tasting path through a deliberately emotional architecture that introduces the elements that generate ambience, identified with the case study, as formants of the sensitive atmosphere. This design-driven research is therefore based on Grégoire Chelkoff's theory of formants as vectors of transmission of atmosphere, pre-existing to the experience of a place, of an ambiance, which itself is understood as a sensitive result of the perception of the space. The present work therefore questions the role of water as a sensitive vector, from the architecture to its visitor. The goal is to determine how water, in varying manifestations, can be used by architects to create a “mise en scène” for a voluntarily emotional architecture.

Full textThe research examines the thermal performance of two different school buildings, Vale do Caí Professional Education Center and Frei Pacífico Elementary School, located in different municipalities and also composed of similar architectural style and solar orientation. Method: The two cases studied had their performance evaluated by the in situ measurement method, with hourly collected hourly rate of the variables of temperature and relative humidity, using data loggers. The sample consisted of one classroom in each teaching environment. Objectives: The objectives of this research: were to characterize the case studies; to calculate the thermal properties of the elements; to point out distinctions in the procedure of collecting data; to analyze the thermal performance of the classrooms studied, considering the measurement period and the period of occupation; and comparing climatic data of municipalities to the climate data from Porto Alegre. The analysis was structured by seasons, with analysis of temperature (including thermal delay and thermal damping) and relative humidity, to help the data analysis methodology degree-hours and bioclimatic chart proposed by Givoni. There were analyses considering the measurement period and the period of school occupation. Results: The results showed a more satisfactory performance for Vale do Caí Professional Education Center, which can be attributed to thermal inertia and thermal properties of the closures of the building, though it had the highest swings in temperature and relative humidity. The analysis of climate data of the municipalities identified some similarities with that of the city of Porto Alegre, although the proximity of masses of water to the later, demonstrated considerable interference in the temperature and relative humidity ranges.

Full textPurpose: A big part of the greenhouse gases from Sweden comes from the construction and real estate sector. Since the life cycle perspective is a high currant subject it is interesting to implement LCA to the building industry and perform such an analysis on the insulation materials that are traditionally used in the building industry. To make the result of the LCA applicable for companies in the industry it is also of interest to know how the LCC differs between the compared insulation materials. For the result to be easy to identify it is necessary to make a compilation of the cost in contrast to the carbon dioxide emissions. The goal of this study is to contribute with knowledge about the environmental impact from a life cycle perspective of different insulation materials. As well to see how the cost might change between different insulation materials with more or less carbon dioxide emissions, where a presumption is that the U-value is the same for the compared materials. Method: The scientific methods for the study have been literature study, case study and document analysis. As a complement, calculations, life cycle assessments and life cycle cost analysis have been made. Findings: Loose fill insulation of cellulose reduces the carbon dioxide emissions for insulation in the attic with 94,6 percent to a cost increase of 30 percent compared to stone wool. A board of cellulose reduces the carbon dioxide emissions for insulation in the external wall with 94,4 percent to a cost increase of 7 percent compared to stone wool. A foundation with foamglas reduces the carbon dioxide emissions with 65,1 percent to a cost increase of 55,2 percent compared to a foundation of EPS and concrete. Implications: • Insulation of cellulose have much lower carbon dioxide emissions than stone wool. • Life cycle cost for cellulose are a bit higher than for stone wool. • From this study the recommendation is to prioritize the environment above the cost and therefor use cellulose as insulation in buildings. • Foamglas is a more sustainable alternative to EPS and concrete for foundations. • Foamglas have a higher life cycle cost than EPS and concrete for foundations. • From this study the recommendation is to prioritize the environment above the cost and therefore consider to use foamglas for foundations. Limitations: The study has not included transportations of the materials. The life cycle assessments are made on 1 m2 of material with a fixed thickness. Only two insulation materials in each building part have been analyzed and no regards have been taken to the materials moist, sound, and fire attribute. The study is quantitative.

Full textStabilization ponds compose systems of wastewater treatment citizens to the variation of efficiency decurrent, amongst other factors, of the climatic variations. The variation of efficiency and stratification in stabilization ponds, located in subtropical environment, at different seasons, was the main objective. For this purpose, the efficiency of two stabilization ponds systems located in the Vale do Ribeira de Iguape (SP) - in cities as Jacupiranga and Pariquera-Açu - was determined, in sazonal period (four seasons) and weekly (three days consecutive), as well as temperature, electric condutivity, pH and dissolved oxygen profiles and environment aspects had been measured (air temperature, solar radiation, direction and speed of the wind and precipitation). Moreover, operational aspects, such as, volume of sludge, volume of water, outflow and theoretical detention times had been measured in order to characterize only the facultative ponds. Alterations in sazonal behavior of these variables and standards of similarity between efficiency and thermal stratification had been analyzed through the tool statistics análise do componente principal (PCA). It was observed, mainly, that the sazonal variation of efficiency was important, so, in July/06 the quality of the affluent and effluent was different to the other seasons, in other words, it was observed sazonal variation of physical and chemical variable. Daily variation happened in January/06, time of more precipitations and thermal homogeneity. In other analysis with PCA, the thermal stratification was significant and it was related with other variable. The outflow and detention times, in the facultative ponds, had been similar others facultatives ponds and the volume of sludge did not exceed 3% of the volume of water in the ponds.

Full textHow can life cycle analyzes assist the risk assessment when choosing a remediation method? In this thesis, it was investigated how the results from life cycle analyzes can be used in the decision support tool SAMLA for contaminated sites to assist in the choice of remediation method at Finspång's Centraltvätt. The thesis has been carried out in collaboration with Structor Miljö Öst AB. Life cycle analyzes have been performed for two different types of in situ remediation methods, Enhanced Reductive Dechlorination and Electrical Conductive Heating. Previous studies have shown that different life cycle analysis methods lead to different results. This study also confirms this. Therefore, results from different methods should not be compared. Life cycle analyzes complement SAMLA for contaminated sites. The percentage ratios were calculated between the remediation methods' environmental and climate impact. In the valuation step in SAMLA, the impact of the remediation alternatives is assessed in comparison with the no action alternative. An assessment was made of the respectively remediation alternatives and a correction of the relationship between the methods was performed by calculating the same percentage ratio that was calculated for the valuation points of the environmental and climate impact. With the support of the life cycle analysis and the risk assessment the remediation method Enhanced Reductive Dechlorination should be chosen for Finspång's Centraltvätt.

Full textUnderstanding the process leading to the construction of a city requires a multidisciplinary approach. Herein are included disciplines such as archeology, history, mathematics, geography and geomatic. The sources should be diverse (archaeological, written, tax, iconographic, planimetric) and the scales varied, from the house to the territory. The city of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, whose development was closely related to the hydrographic network management, was the second largest city of Rouergue in the Late Middle Ages; it constitutes this research lab-area. With the example of this monastic town, a new methodology developed to study medieval urban phenomenon is provided. In order to perceive the dynamics of urban space over time, both medieval and modern tax sources, traditionally used for landscape study, are modeled as adjacency graphs of the plots. The comparison between the cadastral allotment of the Late Middle Ages and the XIXth century is achieved using the graph theory and its intersections with available archaeological data; it allows to approach the arrangement modalities of an urban area
