Abstract:

Abstract:
In the 19th century, von Bismarck, the Chancellor of Germany, made an extraordinary announcement. He declared 65 to be the age of retirement, when a pension could be received. It was a somewhat cynical exercise, since it was meant to keep the veterans of the France-Prussian War quiet. It was thought they might not rebel if they got a pension. Nevertheless, since most people in those days lived to only 50, there was not much of a demand on the Exchequer. This 65-year-old cutoff is amazingly still recognized, though some sensible countries have chosen to ignore it. Demography, biological aging, personal vanity, and a host of other factors have made it a nonsense. Yet, for the time being, we still yield to it. It represents something symbolic, if not real. It is the next to last hurdle in life. It raises the specter of whether retirement is a predeath experience.

Abstract:
Objective. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention implemented new surveillance definitions for ventilator-associated events (VAEs) in January 2013. We describe the epidemiology, attributable morbidity, and attributable mortality of VAEs.Design.Retrospective cohort study.Setting.Academic tertiary care center.Patients.All patients initiated on mechanical ventilation between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2011.Methods.We calculated and compared VAE hazard ratios, antibiotic exposures, microbiology, attributable morbidity, and attributable mortality for all VAE tiers.Results.Among 20,356 episodes of mechanical ventilation, there were 1,141 (5.6%) ventilator-associated condition (VAC) events, 431 (2.1%) infection-related ventilator-associated complications (IVACs), 139 (0.7%) possible pneumonias, and 127 (0.6%) probable pneumonias. VAC hazard rates were highest in medical, surgical, and thoracic units and lowest in cardiac and neuroscience units. The median number of days to VAC onset was 6 (interquartile range, 4–11). The proportion of IVACs to VACs ranged from 29% in medical units to 42% in surgical units. Patients with probable pneumonia were more likely to be prescribed nafcillin, ceftazidime, and fluroquinolones compared with patients with possible pneumonia or IVAC-alone. The most frequendy isolated organisms were Staphylococcus aureus (29%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (14%), and Enterobacter species (7.9%). Compared with matched controls, VAEs were associated with more days to extubation (relative rate, 3.12 [95% confidence interval (CI), 2.96–3.29]), more days to hospital discharge (relative rate, 1.46 [95% CI, 1.37–1.55]), and higher hospital mortality risk (odds ratio, 1.98 [95% CI, 1.60–2.44]).Conclusions.VAEs are common and morbid. Prevention strategies targeting VAEs are needed.

Abstract:
Virus-Associated Hemophagocytic Syndrome (VAHS) is a severe hematological disorder related to some viral infections. It is an illness characterized by persistent fever, pancytopenia, splenomegaly, hyperferritinemia and, the most important, hemophagocytosis observed in the bone marrow, liver and/or lymph nodes. VAHS associated with hepatitis A virus infection is rarely described, despite the high incidence of this viral infection in the population in general. There is no consensus in the literature regarding the optimal treatment of VAHS. In this article the clinical features, presumed pathogenesis, diagnostic criteria and treatment of VAHS are discussed, including description of cases of VAHS related to hepatitis A virus infection found in the medical literature.

Abstract:
In a 6-week feeding trial, Vernonia amygdaliana leaf meat (VaLM) was tested as a dietary ingredient in broiler starter diets. The diets comprised VaLM included at Og (diet 1), 50g per kg basal diet (incorporated at the expense of groundnut cake and wheat ofsals - diets 2 and 3 respectively) and 100g per kg basal diet (incorporated at the expense of groundnut cake -- diet 4). During the study, parameters such as characteristics, blood parameters, histopathology of some organs (liver, kidney, lungs, heat, gizzard and pancreas) and carcass characteristics were investigated. Birds fed on VaLM - based diets performed poorly, the effects of the diet being more pronounced on those fed diet 4. Addition of VaLM to poultry feed significantly (P<0.05) reduced feed intake and weight gain of experimental birds. Blood cellular constituents decreased significantly (p<0.05) in birds fed VaLM-based diets and there were serious histopathological changes within the liver, kidney, lungs, heart, gizzard and pancreas.

Abstract:

The following text is a study of non-normative gender positions and sexualities in the architecture of the senses proposing and encouraging a new way of thinking about the built environment in terms of gender. My assumption is that a change in the way that we think about gender in the theory, practice and education of architecture also will affect the way we think about gender in relation to bodies. By showing that what we usually take for granted as a symbol for male masculinity in the expression of architectural space due to essentialist ideas about gender, can just as well be interpreted as a form of female masculinity, or an expression of butchness, my aim is to disrupt, dislocate and resignify patriarchal and heterosexist norms. I also touch briefly upon the construction of gender and racialization of sexuality within female masculinity in terms other than sex, such as class, race and ethnicity.

In an architectural analysis of Peter Zumthor’s bathhouse in Vals, Switzerland, I apply a newly constructed methodology, what I call non-essential phenomenology, joining aspects of both phenomenological ideas and post-structural thought based on texts by Juhani Pallasmaa and Judith Butler. Within this methodology, I devise several new concepts such as transmateria, material performativity, and sexual material performativity which are necessary for analyzing both the performative aspects of matter and the materialization of gender in bodies. By showing that more than one interpretation exists in the way we create and inhabit space, I present the possibility of shifting and resignifying earlier assumptions about sex/gender, dismantling essentialist thinking and disrupting heteronormative trends, while retaining the materiality of matter and body to create spaces which benefit all bodies, genders and sexualities.

Abstract:
As part of an aesthetic approach, this design-driven research crosses two methodologies to determine what is common in the perception of atmospheres. First, a case study led to the identification of ambiance's generators. These generators were used as an input into a creative process leading to the design of an architectural project. In a more detailed way, five different atmospheres present in the Vals' thermal baths were analysed in the book L'Eau et les rêves by Gaston Bachelard. This bachelardian bezel, that of the oneiric images of matter, served to identify some common generators of sensitive atmospheres. The literary symbols explained by Bachelard resonate in the water contained in the massive stone walls of Vals. Secondly, the construction of this dialogue between Gaston Bachelard and Peter Zumthor leads to the development of a Scotch whiskey tasting path through a deliberately emotional architecture that introduces the elements that generate ambience, identified with the case study, as formants of the sensitive atmosphere. This design-driven research is therefore based on Grégoire Chelkoff's theory of formants as vectors of transmission of atmosphere, pre-existing to the experience of a place, of an ambiance, which itself is understood as a sensitive result of the perception of the space. The present work therefore questions the role of water as a sensitive vector, from the architecture to its visitor. The goal is to determine how water, in varying manifestations, can be used by architects to create a “mise en scène” for a voluntarily emotional architecture.

Abstract:
The research examines the thermal performance of two different school buildings, Vale do Caí Professional Education Center and Frei Pacífico Elementary School, located in different municipalities and also composed of similar architectural style and solar orientation. Method: The two cases studied had their performance evaluated by the in situ measurement method, with hourly collected hourly rate of the variables of temperature and relative humidity, using data loggers. The sample consisted of one classroom in each teaching environment. Objectives: The objectives of this research: were to characterize the case studies; to calculate the thermal properties of the elements; to point out distinctions in the procedure of collecting data; to analyze the thermal performance of the classrooms studied, considering the measurement period and the period of occupation; and comparing climatic data of municipalities to the climate data from Porto Alegre. The analysis was structured by seasons, with analysis of temperature (including thermal delay and thermal damping) and relative humidity, to help the data analysis methodology degree-hours and bioclimatic chart proposed by Givoni. There were analyses considering the measurement period and the period of school occupation. Results: The results showed a more satisfactory performance for Vale do Caí Professional Education Center, which can be attributed to thermal inertia and thermal properties of the closures of the building, though it had the highest swings in temperature and relative humidity. The analysis of climate data of the municipalities identified some similarities with that of the city of Porto Alegre, although the proximity of masses of water to the later, demonstrated considerable interference in the temperature and relative humidity ranges.

Abstract:
Purpose: A big part of the greenhouse gases from Sweden comes from the construction and real estate sector. Since the life cycle perspective is a high currant subject it is interesting to implement LCA to the building industry and perform such an analysis on the insulation materials that are traditionally used in the building industry. To make the result of the LCA applicable for companies in the industry it is also of interest to know how the LCC differs between the compared insulation materials. For the result to be easy to identify it is necessary to make a compilation of the cost in contrast to the carbon dioxide emissions. The goal of this study is to contribute with knowledge about the environmental impact from a life cycle perspective of different insulation materials. As well to see how the cost might change between different insulation materials with more or less carbon dioxide emissions, where a presumption is that the U-value is the same for the compared materials. Method: The scientific methods for the study have been literature study, case study and document analysis. As a complement, calculations, life cycle assessments and life cycle cost analysis have been made. Findings: Loose fill insulation of cellulose reduces the carbon dioxide emissions for insulation in the attic with 94,6 percent to a cost increase of 30 percent compared to stone wool. A board of cellulose reduces the carbon dioxide emissions for insulation in the external wall with 94,4 percent to a cost increase of 7 percent compared to stone wool. A foundation with foamglas reduces the carbon dioxide emissions with 65,1 percent to a cost increase of 55,2 percent compared to a foundation of EPS and concrete. Implications: • Insulation of cellulose have much lower carbon dioxide emissions than stone wool. • Life cycle cost for cellulose are a bit higher than for stone wool. • From this study the recommendation is to prioritize the environment above the cost and therefor use cellulose as insulation in buildings. • Foamglas is a more sustainable alternative to EPS and concrete for foundations. • Foamglas have a higher life cycle cost than EPS and concrete for foundations. • From this study the recommendation is to prioritize the environment above the cost and therefore consider to use foamglas for foundations. Limitations: The study has not included transportations of the materials. The life cycle assessments are made on 1 m2 of material with a fixed thickness. Only two insulation materials in each building part have been analyzed and no regards have been taken to the materials moist, sound, and fire attribute. The study is quantitative.

Abstract:
Stabilization ponds compose systems of wastewater treatment citizens to the variation of efficiency decurrent, amongst other factors, of the climatic variations. The variation of efficiency and stratification in stabilization ponds, located in subtropical environment, at different seasons, was the main objective. For this purpose, the efficiency of two stabilization ponds systems located in the Vale do Ribeira de Iguape (SP) - in cities as Jacupiranga and Pariquera-Açu - was determined, in sazonal period (four seasons) and weekly (three days consecutive), as well as temperature, electric condutivity, pH and dissolved oxygen profiles and environment aspects had been measured (air temperature, solar radiation, direction and speed of the wind and precipitation). Moreover, operational aspects, such as, volume of sludge, volume of water, outflow and theoretical detention times had been measured in order to characterize only the facultative ponds. Alterations in sazonal behavior of these variables and standards of similarity between efficiency and thermal stratification had been analyzed through the tool statistics análise do componente principal (PCA). It was observed, mainly, that the sazonal variation of efficiency was important, so, in July/06 the quality of the affluent and effluent was different to the other seasons, in other words, it was observed sazonal variation of physical and chemical variable. Daily variation happened in January/06, time of more precipitations and thermal homogeneity. In other analysis with PCA, the thermal stratification was significant and it was related with other variable. The outflow and detention times, in the facultative ponds, had been similar others facultatives ponds and the volume of sludge did not exceed 3% of the volume of water in the ponds.

Abstract:
The study compared four different cooling systems and analyzed the competitiveness in those systems regarding electricity consumption, environmental impact and life cycle cost analysis. The assignment was given from the consultant company Ramböll who believed in these systems design as a solution to minimize the energy consumption in cooling systems. The purpose of the study was to facilitate the selection of cooling system by finding a key ratio for profitability in terms of energy consumption. This makes it easier to select one of these systems in project planning. A representative building model was built in the energy simulation program IDA ICE. From these result an energy profile was achieved.   The energy profile was then used in another simulation program called Polysun were detailed system regulations could be made. By programing the controllers to regulate the distribution in an efficient way the energy consumption was minimized and matches the building cooling demand. The simulation was done for one full year and the obtained total energy consumption for each system, it was then used to calculate the operational cost. The life cycle cost analysis is a tool that compare each system costs during its lifetime. A depth analysis was also done regarding the sensitivity of changes in the profitability for the systems, by applying different electrical price and cost of capital.   The study shows that the systems with different borehole storage solutions proves to be effective systems for covering the building cooling demand with a significant lower electricity consumption, compared to the system with a chiller. The different borehole storage systems also contribute to cover some parts of the heat demand, since the stored heat needs to be used in order to make the borehole storage functional. By analyzing the cooling systems in a comparative perspective, the most effective solution is identified from an economic and environmental point of view. The cooling system that only contained a borehole storage was the solution that distinguished the most regarding total electricity consumption and environmental impact. This system resulted in being the most profitable cooling system between the compared systems. The combined system with a borehole storage system and a heat pump solution was also proven to be an effective cooling system, additionally with an advantage of providing parts of the hot water demand in the building.

How can life cycle analyzes assist the risk assessment when choosing a remediation method? In this thesis, it was investigated how the results from life cycle analyzes can be used in the decision support tool SAMLA for contaminated sites to assist in the choice of remediation method at Finspång's Centraltvätt. The thesis has been carried out in collaboration with Structor Miljö Öst AB. Life cycle analyzes have been performed for two different types of in situ remediation methods, Enhanced Reductive Dechlorination and Electrical Conductive Heating. Previous studies have shown that different life cycle analysis methods lead to different results. This study also confirms this. Therefore, results from different methods should not be compared. Life cycle analyzes complement SAMLA for contaminated sites. The percentage ratios were calculated between the remediation methods' environmental and climate impact. In the valuation step in SAMLA, the impact of the remediation alternatives is assessed in comparison with the no action alternative. An assessment was made of the respectively remediation alternatives and a correction of the relationship between the methods was performed by calculating the same percentage ratio that was calculated for the valuation points of the environmental and climate impact. With the support of the life cycle analysis and the risk assessment the remediation method Enhanced Reductive Dechlorination should be chosen for Finspång's Centraltvätt.

Abstract:
Understanding the process leading to the construction of a city requires a multidisciplinary approach. Herein are included disciplines such as archeology, history, mathematics, geography and geomatic. The sources should be diverse (archaeological, written, tax, iconographic, planimetric) and the scales varied, from the house to the territory. The city of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, whose development was closely related to the hydrographic network management, was the second largest city of Rouergue in the Late Middle Ages; it constitutes this research lab-area. With the example of this monastic town, a new methodology developed to study medieval urban phenomenon is provided. In order to perceive the dynamics of urban space over time, both medieval and modern tax sources, traditionally used for landscape study, are modeled as adjacency graphs of the plots. The comparison between the cadastral allotment of the Late Middle Ages and the XIXth century is achieved using the graph theory and its intersections with available archaeological data; it allows to approach the arrangement modalities of an urban area

Abstract:
Ventricular assist devices (VADs) have become a cornerstone of therapy in the management of end-stage heart failure, both as a means of bridging to cardiac transplantation and as destination therapy for long-term quality of life improvement. Responding to medical emergencies in patients with VADs poses numerous challenges to rapid response team (RRT) providers. Managing these patients requires basic understanding of VAD function and physiology and the multitude of complications that follow their implantation. Most healthcare professionals lack exposure to VADs, and although it may seem daunting, this chapter will provide a systematic approach of how to identify, troubleshoot, diagnose, and manage VAD-associated complications and provide emergency care for the VAD patient.

Abstract:
Tax revenues in most African countries fall far short of what is feasible and necessary to finance basic human and economic development. Domestic tax revenue mobilization is called for, preferably in the form of a broad-based consumption tax, such as the VAT, which is less detrimental to economic growth than an income tax is. Most African VATs, however, are riddled with exemptions, exclusions, and zero rates on domestic goods and services. Hence, base-broadening rather than rate-increasing should be pursued if revenue is the goal. Base-broadening would also make the VATs less distortionary and complicated. The case for base-broadening is strengthened by the findings of incidence studies that show that the net result of fiscal systems can be equalizing if the revenue from broad-based VATs is used to finance in-kind transfers, such as healthcare and education. This highly informative and well-researched book makes the case for modernizing African VAT systems by posing the following questions. What is the role and design of a best-practice VAT? Do African VATs measure up to best practice and how productive are they of revenue? What is being done to mitigate the VAT’s regressive burden distribution? How should VAT be coordinated in regional economic communities? What are non-standard exemptions and how prevalent are they? What treatment is accorded public bodies, immovable property, financial services, and insurance? How are and should small businesses and farmers be treated? Answers to these questions are explored by reference to best practice elsewhere and on the basis of detailed analyses of country-specific VATs.

Abstract:
American society continues to be characterized by deep racial inequality that is a legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. What does justice demand in response? In this book, Andrew Valls argues that justice demands quite a lot—the United States has yet to fully reckon with its racial past, or to confront its ongoing legacies. Valls argues that liberal values and principles have far-reaching implications in the context of the deep injustices along racial lines in American society. In successive chapters, the book takes on such controversial issues as reparations, memorialization, the fate of black institutions and communities, affirmative action, residential segregation, the relation between racial inequality and the criminal justice system, and the intersection of race and public schools. In all of these contexts, Valls argues that liberal values of liberty and equality require profound changes in public policy and institutional arrangements in order to advance the cause of racial equality. Racial inequality will not go away on its own, Valls argues, and past and present injustices create an obligation to address it. But we must rethink some of the fundamental assumptions that shape mainstream approaches to the problem, particularly those that rely on integration as the primary route to racial equality.

Vasectomy is now well recognized worldwide as one of the safest and most effective contraceptive methods. A history should be taken and an examination should be carried out on every person requesting sterilization. Preoperative counselling should include alternative methods of contraception, complication and failure rates, and the need for postoperative semen analysis. There are no absolute contraindications to sterilization, provided that they make the request themselves, are of sound mind, and are not acting under external duress. Relative contraindications may be the absence of children, age <30 years, severe illness, no current relationship, and scrotal pain. Although various vasectomy techniques have been described, all share three essential steps: isolation of the vas deferens, delivery and interruption of the vas, and management of the vasal ends.

This work explores the inequality of wealth in Spain during the late Middle Ages from six cities located in the kingdoms of Castile (Seville) and the Crown of Aragon (Barcelona, Valencia, Mallorca, Castelló and Valls), through tax sources that inform about the wealth of each taxpayer. These records provide very precise data on the wealth distribution that allow us to study inequality in an aggregate manner for the same city and, at the same time, perform sectoral analyses according to gender, different socio-professio¬nal groups and urban districts.

Abstract:
AbstractIn recent years, the popularity of hiking has steadily increased across different segments of the population. Although there is considerable evidence of the benefits for hikers regarding physical and mental health, the inherent risks of these outdoor activities cannot be underestimated. Accident prevention and an increase of awareness about possible risks are necessary to minimize hiking and pedestrian tourism’s negative consequences. In most hiking information maps and interactive applications, there is usually not enough information about difficulty points or the granularity level required to provide tailored recommendations to hikers with physical or psychological limitations. In this paper, we present Syris, a geo-information system for hiking itineraries that incorporates Points-Of-Difficulty to assess the level of effort, technique, and risk of hiking trails. The system allows users to filter itineraries and obtain recommendations based on the assessment of difficulty following a well-established methodology. The system has been implemented, deployed and tested with real data in the region of Val d’Anniviers in Switzerland, and is openly available to enable further developments and refinement.

Abstract:
AbstractA novel intralesional cryosurgical needle is inserted into the hypertrophic scars and keloid (HSK). It is connected to a canister of liquid nitrogen, which causes the cryoprobe to freeze, thereby freezing the HSK from inside out.Following the cryo-treatment, the histomorphometric analysis demonstrated rejuvenation of the treated scar. The frozen tissue was devoid of proliferating cells and of mast cells whereas the number of blood vessels remained unaltered. The surface thermal history showed slow cooling and thawing rates as well as less pronounced end temperature, which is “friendly” to the melanocytes, thus only minimal hypopigmentation was evident. A significant long hold time was documented. This allows time for solute effects, ice crystal formation, and recrystallization, which enhances and increases the rate of cell death. This long hold time is unique for the intralesional cryosurgery technology and might explain the superior clinical results.More than 50% of scar volume reduction was achieved following a single cryotherapy. For ear HSK, 70% of volume reduction was achieved, and for the upper back and shoulders 60%. Significant alleviation of objective and subjective clinical symptoms was documented. During the follow-up period there was no worsening or infection of the HSK and only minimal hypopigmentation.A pain control protocol was applied, which significantly reduced pain severity during and after the cryosurgery treatment to tolerable levels (VAS ≤ 3).The intralesional cryosurgery treatment is an evidence-based, effective, and safe technology, simple to operate, can be applied as an office procedure, is cost-effective, and takes a short learning curve. The technique achieves remarkable clinical results usually by a single treatment.

Abstract:
Each brain enlivens a body in interaction with the social and physical environment. Peter Zumthor’s Therme at Vals exemplifies the interplay of interior with surroundings, and ways the actions of users fuse with their multimodal experience. The action–perception cycle includes both practical and contemplative actions. The author analyzes what Louis Sullivan meant by “form ever follows function,” but more often talks of aesthetics and utility. Not only are action, perception, and emotion intertwined, but so are remembering and imagination. Architectural design leads to the physical construction of buildings—but much of what our brains achieve can be seen as a form of mental construction. A first look at neuroscience offers schema theory as a bridge from cognitive processes to neural circuitry. Some architects fear that neuroscience will strip the architect of any creativity. In counterpoint, two-way reduction explores how neuroscience can “dissect” phenomenology by showing how first-person experiences arise from melding diverse subconscious processes. This raises the possibility that neuroscience can extend the effectiveness of architectural design by showing how different aspects of a building may affect human experience in ways that are not apparent to self-reflection.

Abstract:
When people engage in recreational activities in sensitive forest habitats, there can be unintended negative impacts on wildlife and forests. These include disturbance and displacement of wild game as well as damage to young plants (tree seedlings and saplings from ski or snowshoe compaction or direct physical damage from ski edges). These are just a few examples that highlight the need to manage the impact of recreationists with different measures in order to minimize the disturbance of game (especially red deer and roe deer) and the impairment of important object protective forests that this in turn causes. In Section 2 of this chapter, we describe the tourism, population, settlement area, economy, forestry and natural hazards in the GreenRisk4Alps Pilot Action Region (PAR) of Gries am Brenner and Vals in Tyrol, Austria. Section 3 provides an overview of the overarching initiative and integration forum, “Tyrolian mountains – experience together”, which was initiated by the Amt der Tiroler Landesregierung (Office of the Tyrolean Provincial Government). We then provide a description of the exact workflow, the possible measures and other details on ski tour steering options. Ski tour steering measures in the Gries am Brenner and Vals PAR can be found in Section 3.4, followed by a critical review of the experiences in Section 4.

Mechanical circulatory devices, such as ventricular assist devices (VADs), have become the life-saving alternative for the patients who suffered from severe heart failure (1). These devices were utilized as the bridge-transplant devices; however, due to the fast growing population of cardiovascular diseases and the eligible organ donations are very limited, these devices have been considered for the application of life-long implantation. The continuous-flow VADs offer better hemodynamic performance than the first generations pulsatile flow VADs, its compact design offers surgical advantage; however, due to the non-physiological blood flow past constricted geometrics where platelets are exposed to elevated wall shear stress (2), VADs are burdened with high incidence of thromboembolic events, mandating anticoagulation therapies for its recipients (3).

Abstract:
Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices, which include ventricular assist devices (VADs), offer an attractive solution to approximately 35,000 end-stage heart failure patients eligible for transplants, of which only 2,000–2,300 are performed annually [1]. These devices are employed to augment the function of the ailing left and/or right ventricle and serve as bridge-to-transplant or destination therapy, but are often accompanied by thrombotic complications. Pathologic flow patterns are characteristic of VADs and increase susceptibility to shear-induced platelet activation, which leads to thrombus formation [2]. Patients implanted with such devices are routinely prescribed antiplatelets to tackle these complications. Despite this concurrent therapy, thromboembolic incident rates of 0.9–13% are reported for the widely-implanted Thoratec HeartMate II and MicroMed DeBakey VADs [3, 4]. This has spurred the development of design optimization techniques to lower or eliminate the incidence of thrombosis and reduce the dependence on pharmacotherapy management.

The use of ventricular assist devices (VADs) as a means of cardiac support for patients with diminished heart function has been investigated since the 1960s [1]. While VAD therapy has had success in assisting the failing heart, thrombus formation within these devices is one of various complications that still limit its long term use. Research has shown that thrombus deposition in VADs is a function of the underlying fluid mechanics within these devices. Areas of flow stasis, high blood residence time, and wall shear rates under 500 s−1 are important flow characteristics driving thrombosis [2].

Due to a high mortality rate for pediatric patients on the heart transplant list, smaller versions of ventricular assist devices (VADs) are being developed for these patients [1]. Ventricular assist devicess used in adult patients with end-stage heart failure have already become a viable option during the bridge-to-transplant period [2] and have also shown potential for aiding in myocardial recovery. A challenge to the development of pediatric VADs is the use of the aortic cannulae attached to them. During the development of the 12cc Pennsylvania State pediatric pulsatile VAD, particle image velocimetry (PIV) illustrated that hematocrit levels affected the fluid dynamics. The objective of this study is to compare the fluid dynamics of a pediatric blood analog and a goat blood analog within PVAD aortic cannulae.

The Internet is one of the main ways of interaction, production and consumption of content. The active participation of individuals in this environment, disseminating ideas and defending or proposing political agendas, can be considered as a new form of social mobilization, especially in the current pandemic context in which social distance is recommended. Based on this, this article presents the results of a project that aimed to investigate and learn about popular participation in the administrative sphere through the Internet in the municipalities that make up the Vale do Caí region. To achieve this goal, through exploratory research and a qualitative approach, all available technologies were mapped for citizens to participate in the political life of the 20 municipalities that make up the region from the websites of their prefectures. The analysis of these technologies is essential to understand how the interaction between the government and the citizen occurs in the Vale do Caí region.

Abstract:
Congestive heart failure has reached epidemic proportions in the United States with more than 5.7 million patients suffering from it annually ( 1). Due to the limited availability of donor hearts, patients in their late stage heart failure who may require cardiac transplantation are dying while waiting for a matched heart. Mechanical circulatory support devices (MCS), such as ventricular assist devices (VAD), are utilized as a bridge to transplantation, and recently as destination therapy for extending the life of these patients. Continuous-flow VAD offer a surgical advantage over older generation pulsatile-flow VAD due to their compact design; however, due to the high RPM these VADs are operated with and the non-physiological blood flow patterns they generates, VADs are burdened with high incidence of thromboembolic events, and antiplatelet/anticoagulation regimens are mandated for the device recipients.
