Hughes, Lynn Janine. "Nursing Faculty Attitudes, Knowledge and Practice of Therapeutic Touch." Thesis, Montana State University, 2005. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2005/hughes/HughesL0805.pdf.

Abstract:
Therapeutic touch is increasingly recognized as a nursing intervention that complements traditional medical care. Few studies specifically address nursing faculty perspectives on therapeutic touch and whether faculty include therapeutic touch theory or skills content in courses they teach. The purpose of this study was to describe nursing faculty attitudes, knowledge and practice of therapeutic touch. In addition, barriers to practicing or teaching therapeutic touch were identified. A survey (n=23) of nursing faculty teaching undergraduate students was conducted in a university-based nursing program. Faculty were in agreement about incorporating content on the theory of therapeutic touch into nursing curricula. Over 85% of faculty thought that patients could benefit from therapeutic touch and that therapeutic touch holds promise for treatment of disease. Nearly 74% of faculty thought that clinical nursing care should integrate the use of therapeutic touch. Few (30%) had received formal therapeutic touch education. Over half (56.5%) desired more education about therapeutic touch but primarily for the purposes of personal knowledge and teaching nursing students rather than for practicing therapeutic touch. The primary barrier to using therapeutic touch in practice was identified as lack of staff training. The most important perceived barrier to incorporating therapeutic touch practice into nursing curricula was lack of faculty training. Current faculty knowledge of therapeutic touch, in this sample, lingers behind interest, suggesting an environment ready for change. Identifying faculty attitudes, knowledge and practice of therapeutic touch could have an impact on inclusion of therapeutic touch in future nursing curricula. Understanding faculty desire for therapeutic touch education could help in faculty development critical to integrating therapeutic touch in curricula and practice. A nursing college that incorporates therapeutic touch demonstrates commitment to a holistic nursing environment.

Capili-Rosenkranz, Erlinda Christina. "Perceptions of therapeutic touch by adults with chronic pain." FIU Digital Commons, 1995. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2034.

Full text
Abstract:
This study, using a pre-experimental one group pretest, posttest design sought to describe the perceptions of therapeutic touch (TT) by adults with chronic pain. A sample of 14 adults from an outpatient physical medicine practice and an acute rehabilitation facility were asked to rate their pain and degree of relaxation before and after receiving TT for 5 to 15 minutes. They were also asked open-ended questions to describe their perceptions of the TT experience. Findings from this research indicated that adults' feelings of relaxation post TT were significantly greater than their pre-TT feelings of relaxation (p=<.05), and their perceptions of pain post TT were significantly lower than their pre TT pain perceptions (p=<.05), supporting the research hypotheses. Qualitative phenomenologic data analysis revealed that TT is a multidimensional modality affecting the physiological, psychological, and spiritual aspects of human existence, all of which are severely distressed in adults with chronic pain.

Abstract:
Therapeutic touch has been shown to help reduce pain in several ailments. Cancer patients experience considerable pain during their illness. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of therapeutic touch on pain experienced by cancer patients. The study uses a quasi-experimental design. A sample of sixteen hospitalized cancer patients was selected. The patients were randomly assigned to two groups: the experimental and the placebo control group. The patients assigned to the experimental group received a therapeutic touch treatment on two consecutive days, each day the treatment lasted for a period of 20 to 30 minutes. The patients in the placebo control group received mimicked therapeutic touch for 20 - 30 minutes.. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to measure pain before and after the therapeutic touch treatment. At the end of the second day of the study, a Patient Touch Questionnaire (PTQ) was administered to measure the subjects' responses to the therapeutic touch treatment. The hypothesis that Therapeutic vi Touch would significantly decrease pain in cancer patients is supported by the observations made in this study.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to determine whether or not a significant difference exists in pregnant women among those receiving therapeutic touch, mock therapeutic touch, or no touch on measurements of anxiety and well-being. Thirty third trimester primigravida subjects were tested pre- and postintervention using the State-Anxiety Inventory and a Well-Being Visual Analog; heart and respiratory rates were monitored before, during, and after the treatment. No significant differences were found using analysis of covariance with the pre-test scores as the covariate. The findings indicate that therapeutic touch may not be useful in reducing state anxiety or enhancing subjective well-being in pregnancy. Study limitations include a small sample size, use of an instrument without established reliability and validity, and a study environment that may have increased anxiety.

Abstract:
Pain is one of the symptoms that most endanger productivity, welfare and life quality of people, especially the elderly. With the increasing use of Complementary Therapies for its treatment there is the need to conduct studies that provide evidence about its indication and effectiveness. Considering the wide use of Therapeutic Touch (TT) in the adjunctive treatment of pain as a result of various clinical conditions and the methodological criticisms of the authors\' results, this research seeks to answer the following question: What are the effects of the Therapeutic Touch on inflammatory pain? For such, it was conducted an experiment using the model of paw edema induced by Freund\'s Complete Adjuvant (FCA) in male mice. The anti-inflammatory action of TT was verified by means of variation in pain, edema and neutrophilic migration, before and after the intervention, it was applied for 15 minutes once a day for four days. The results showed a significant increase in mechanical nociceptive threshold and an increase in the edema area in the paws of animals treated with TT, in the second day of treatment (p < 0.05). The observed reduction of neutrophilic migration was not statistically significant. It was concluded that the reduction in pain corroborates the data obtained in human studies, with control of the placebo effect. The model of paw edema induced by FCA is suitable for experimental investigation of the effects of TT on inflammatory pain. It is suggested further experiments to elucidate the physiological mechanisms of action underlying the findings, mainly due to the increase of edema in the group treated with TT.

It is a doctoral dissertation by the Graduate Program in Environmental Education at the Federal University of Rio Grande, linked to the line of research Non-Formal Environmental Education. As a general goal, it aimed to seek ways to minimize iatrogenic injury in hospital nursing practices through Schizoanalysis and Therapeutic Touch. Three hypotheses were formulated, each one with its respective micro intervention, all of which were epistemologically anchored in schizoanalysis and the Therapeutic Touch technique, consisting of placing hands, called Krieger ? Kunz method, based on environmental experiments. They are as follows: 1 - The construction of an ecosophic space could help overcome iatrogenics; 2 - The Hospital as a pedagogical environment can favor the formation of a new look and 3 The Hospital as clinical space can go beyond pathology, valuing human being as a whole. Thus, we applied the mapping method formulated by Deleuze and Guattari, which aimed to monitor a production process in the field of subjectivity. Within the context of schizoanalysis, it provided the formation of rhizomes, characterized as an experimentation research. This production process based itself on cartographic attention, which consists of tracks aiming to describe, discuss, and, most of all, collectivize the experience of the researcher. The track made from this work concerns the functioning of attention during the fieldwork, which was defined as concentrated and open, characterized by four varieties: screening, touch, landing and attentive recognition. Experimentations took place on an itinerant basis in different environments, either along the Atlantic forest, or in the academic and hospital space of a university hospital in the southern region of the state. Some experimentation involved a group of doctoral students, consisting of three researchers from the Graduate Program in Environmental Education, called the research community. Other experimentations aimed at a direct study with professionals and students who participated in the 35th Local Week in Nursing, as well as two people hospitalized in a medical unit. In the first micro intervention, it was clear that iatrogenics is also the fruits of the behavior of health professionals, hence, what needs to be revised is the power relations within the institution. From the second and third micro interventions, it is inferred that the hospital, as educational and clinical environment may be a space for clinamen and has a changing potential to be perceived and valued for mutual learning. Teaching practices have to overcome the Cartesian paradigm and approach an environmental perception, which, applied to everyday life, are devices nurturing the construction of new knowledge and ways of understanding the care through sensitive listening. After the experiences, it was possible to think of my own iatrogenic attitudes and behaviours, offering new meaningful behaviors in the form of reverberations, which addressed the environmental education as an inherent flow of life and space for formation of new rhizomes.

Abstract:
Thesis (MCur)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research indicates that human touch plays an integral role in an infant’s ability to thrive and grow, with a correlation existing between tactile stimulation and optimal physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development. The aim of this study was to explore the level of knowledge of first time mothers attending Mowbray Maternity Hospital (MMH) regarding the importance of tactile stimulation during infancy and early childhood. A descriptive, non-experimental, research design was employed, using a pilot tested structured questionnaire for data collection during face-to-face interviews conducted by the Principal Investigator. Questions were divided into four domains: knowledge about the impact of tactile stimulation on the bonding domain, the emotional domain, physical domain and the social domain of infants and children. The inclusion of one open-ended question allowed participants to suggest recommendations for improved knowledge and care. A sample of 41 participants, constituting 40% of the study population (N=101) was randomly selected from MMH. Prior ethical approval was obtained from the Human Research Ethics Committee of Stellenbosch University, and operational approval from the Western Cape Department of Health, and the Research Committee and Senior Management of MMH. Written informed consent was obtained from the study participants. The quantitative data was analysed using Statistica (Version 10) with the assistance of a statistician. The qualitative data yielded from the one open-ended question was analysed thematically and then quantified. The findings show that 90% (n=37) of the participants were knowledgeable about tactile stimulation strategies, 81% (n=33) knew about the impact of tactile stimulation on the bonding domain, 75% (n=31) on the emotional domain, 52% (n=21) on the physical domain and 43% (n=18) on the social domain. Although all participants had reported for out-patient antenatal care on four and more occasions, 73% (n=30) indicated that they had improved their knowledge regarding pregnancy, labour, birth, and parenting by reading magazines, 20% (n=8) reported that a health care worker had spoken to them about the benefits of tactile stimulation, and 15% (n=6) had received literature on the benefits of tactile stimulation. The open-ended question generated several findings which included suggestions to enhance healthcare by providing information and training about tactile stimulation and perinatal matters when attending antenatal clinic; by offering assistance with infant feeding during the postnatal period; and by improving the attitude and professional stance of health care workers. The study findings suggest that first time mothers at MMH are not adequately knowledgeable about the importance of tactile stimulation during infancy and early childhood. Grounded in the empirical findings and based on the suggestions offered by the participants, several recommendations, including improved information and training, were identified toward strengthening tactile stimulation knowledge and practice at both the parental and health care provider levels.

Abstract:
International and national research has shown that the use of complementary therapies (often referred to in the scientific literature as either alternative therapies or unconventional therapies) is widespread. However, there is little in the scientific literature about the use of complementary therapies in the treatment regime of people with dementia. Specifically, there have been no published results of investigations into the use of Reiki, a holistic complementary therapy, in the treatment regime of people with dementia. Before proceeding with an in-depth examination into the use of Reiki in the care of people with dementia, a questionnaire containing both closed and open-ended questions was distributed to 162 South Australian High Care Residential Facilities (formerly called Nursing Homes) in 2002. The return rate was 58.0% (n=94) of which 50.0% of the mail out (n=81) was available for analysis. Findings from the questionnaires suggested that a wide range of complementary therapies including aromatherapy, massage, music, behaviour therapy, healing touch, Reiki and Therapeutic Touch (Krieger/Kunz method) were used regularly within South Australian High Care Residential Facilities. Complementary therapies were reportedly used to calm residents, improve behaviour management, enhance the quality of life of residents, promote 1:1 interaction, stimulate the senses, and reduce the need for medication. Due to 15 facilities reporting the use of Reiki, a series of semi-structured interviews with Reiki practitioners caring for people with dementia was conducted in 2004/2005. Interview participants (n=10) included a representative range of people providing care for people with dementia in eight Nursing Homes in Adelaide, South Australia. Data reduction methods included a quasi-statistical counting of key words and repeated re-readings of the transcripts to discover the essences, abstract the meanings and arrange them into themes and sub-themes. The results of the interviews suggested that Reiki is an easy to learn and easy to use holistic complementary therapy which has the potential to enhance the quality of life of the persons with dementia, their family members, and their carers. The interview participants reported improved physical, psychological, mental and emotional well-being as well as enhanced relationships and a reduction in negative behaviours following the use of Reiki. The receipt of the first Jack Loader Scholarship from the Rosemary Foundation for Memory Support Inc. in early 2005 enabled the researcher to transfer to full-time studies from April 2005. Key Words: aged care; alternative therapies; complementary therapies; dementia; early onset dementia; one to one interaction; quality of life; Reiki; therapeutic touch; unconventional therapies.

Bennett, Christopher. "Risky business: a narrative inquiry of male child and youth care practitioners' use of therapeutic touch." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/10809.

Full text
Abstract:
Male child and youth care (CYC) practitioners have rarely been queried about how, or if, they use therapeutic touch (TT) with clients. A significant amount of literature suggests that TT with children and youth can have a positive impact on development, social, emotional and physical wellbeing, and a reduction of aggressive behaviour. However, for male practitioners, using caring touch with clients grows ever more precarious given the increased perception that they are vulnerable to allegations of misconduct and concern that touching clients could be triggering. This narrative inquiry examines how male CYC practitioners make sense of, and engage in, the use of therapeutic touch. Through interviews of five men from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, stories were collected about experiences, values, and personal histories to discover how they were informed about and navigate therapeutic touch with clients. Four themes were identified including, the story of patriarchy, fear, vulnerability and connection. How participants approach their use of therapeutic touch was found to depend on early life experiences, important life events, anecdotal evidence that reinforced fears about using touch, and the current social and political culture such as the #metoo movement. This study also finds that more research, dialogue and training is needed in order for male CYC practitioners to feel safe and competent to use therapeutic touch in a way that is beneficial for clients.

The computerized touch-screen system is a set of upper limb motor rehabilitation equipment and specific to central nervous system injury patients with upper limb motor impairment. The system has a task-oriented and action results immediately feedback and many other features, it can compensate for limitation of game software like as Wii and Kinect. The activities design and classification of system is based on the expertise and experience of developers to arrange, did not have the empirical data to support, so the purpose of this study is not only to verify the construct validity of the activities, but also through the way of Rasch analysis to arrange item difficulty, we expected activities can be difficult to cover different abilities of cases. The sixty hemiplegia stroke subjects used hemiplegic side of the upper limb to randomly execute the category I and II of the system, total are sixteen items. Each item selected the most simple activity for one minute, and recorded the correct number of execution within one minute from the system. Data analysis used of factor analysis to verify the construct validity of these two category activities. The Rasch model analysis arranged the item difficulty of these two category activities with Winsteps 3.75 version, and developed the person ability and item difficulty map. The results showed that the 11 items of arm movement and shoulder stability in the category I, all have a common main factor that the factor variance of explained is 66.72%, we named this factor arm movements. In the category II, 5 items of arm reaching only have a common main factor that the factor variance of explained is 87.04%, we named this factor arm reaching. In the item difficulty hierarchy of the category I, the easiest activity is item 7 Blocks Painted, and the most difficult is item 6 Raising Hand and Horizontal Move. In the category II the easiest activity is item 11 Reach to Fixed Target, and the most difficult is the item 13 Back and Forth Target to Shoulder. In conclusion, the activities provided by the system have good construct validity, display that the activity design and layout is conformed with the classification of the system. In addition, the item difficulty hierarchy of the system covered a variety of cases of different abilities, so it can be used as a reference when the clinical user to select activities.

Abstract:
A touch is an inseparable part of the mutual contact between a nurse and a patient. The more a patient depends on the assistance of the others in common daily activities, the more a nurse uses physical contact in the care, not only in relation to the professional ortherapeutic acts, but also to the expression of compassion, sympathy, encouragement or calming a patient.Despite the fact that a touch is so important in patient care, it only receives a marginal attention. The goal of the thesis was to examine the reasons for and the obstacles to the application of a touch in nursing care, and if a touch belongs to the present nursing care.Research questions were set to achieve the goals:How do nurses perceive a touch in the present nursing care? How do patients perceive a nurse's touch in the treatment?Three hypotheses were formulated in dependence on the above set goals:H1:Nurses perceive a touch more as a part of the direct (physical)care than a therapeutic intervention.H2:Nurses rather use a touch as an unintentional method than as an intentional therapeutic intervention.H3:Nurses use a touch rather intuitively, not realizing the risk that a touch can be perceived negatively. The theoretical part of the thesis was elaborated on the base of literature sources. The empiric part was implemented on the base of a qualitative and quantitative research. The data for the qualitative research was gained by means of semi-structured interviews with ten patients.A questionnaire research for general nurses was used for the data collection in the quantitative research. On the base of the results the hypotheses were evaluated as follows:H1 Nurses perceive a touch more as a part of the direct (physical) care than a therapeutic intervention unconfirmed.H2:Nurses rather use a touch as an unintentional method than as an intentional therapeutic intervention unconfirmed.H3:Nurses use a touch rather intuitively, not realizing the risk that a touch can be perceived negatively unconfirmed. It is obvious from the results we achieved in the research that a touch has been and will always be an inseparable part of the mutual relation between a nurse and a patient. The research has shown that nurses perceive a touch as a part of the direct care as well as a therapeutic intervention. And if nurses use a touch as a therapeutic intervention, they do it intentionally, mostly to build confidence, to calm a patient, to create the feeling of safety, certainty and understanding.More than a half of the nurses replied that they used a touch instinctively, not realizing that they are touching the patient, on the other hand, more than a half of the nurses replied that they cared about at what points a patient perceived a touch negatively.Although the nurses replied that a therapeutic touch was not time consuming, it is not applied frequently in the therapeutic care. The research has also shown that patients accept a touch within the care and they accept it resignedly. When nurses touch patients, the patients are glad if such a touch is accompanied by words. The interviews revealed that a nurse should not underestimate a handshake at the first contact, as patients perceive this act as a feeling of interest and creation of confidence. The research shows indisputably that a touch is a very important holistic nursing interventionin patient care. It has confirmed that although a touch and its perception is something so intimate, individual and indispensable in nursing care, it only receives a marginal attention. This thesis might serve as study material for numerous nurses, so that a touch is used as an effective intervention by a nurse that perceives a patient as a holistic being and has a sympathy for him/her in his/her uneasy life situation. This thesis might initialize a more extended research combining more research methods. An application of hidden observation for deeper understanding of the use of a touch in nursing care might be particularly interesting.

Hill, Valerie A. "The relationship between touch sensation of the hand and occupational performance in individuals with chronic stroke." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/4651.

Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Stroke is the main cause of disability in the United States. Individuals with stroke commonly report sensory impairment affects their recovery. Motor recovery and sensory impairment are related and impact individuals’ ability to perform valued occupations. Despite the prevalence of sensation impairment after stroke, many occupational therapists fail to include sensation assessment and intervention in treatment planning. The exclusion of sensation in occupational therapy interventions during stroke rehabilitation may be due to the lack of literature supporting the association between sensation and occupational performance. The current study aimed to determine the relationship between touch sensation of the affected hand and occupational performance and satisfaction in individuals with chronic stroke. Using a cross-sectional study design, this study associated factors related to hand sensation and function in individuals with chronic stroke. Fifty individuals with chronic stroke participated in a one-time testing session in which assessments related to sensation, movement of the hand and engagement in daily activities were administered. Correlation analyses were utilized to determine relationships between touch sensation of the affected hand with individuals’ abilities to engage in valued daily activities, arm and hand disability, and manual abilities. The main finding of the study was that individuals with intact sensation reported greater ability to perform valued occupations and satisfaction with their performance, as compared with individuals with touch sensation impairment. For individuals with impaired touch sensation of the affected hand, impairment of touch sensation of the hand did not correlate with individuals’ performance or satisfaction with valued occupations, arm or hand movement, or manual abilities. Collectively, the results of this study reflect the complex interaction between touch sensation, occupational performance, motor functioning, and manual abilities of the affected hand for individuals’ who have experienced a stroke. This study informs therapists, rehabilitation scientists, and other healthcare professionals that client-centered, individualized approaches, including a wide array of clinical assessments and intervention, including assessment of occupational performance and sensation, remain important components in stroke rehabilitation.

Abstract:
This research journey examines the process of co-creating, along with my co-travellers (research participants), a more holistic approach to trauma debriefing. Whilst incorporating elements of Mitchell's (1983) Critical Incidence Stress Debriefing model (C.I.S.D.), our point of difference has been to adopt a narrative pastoral approach. This was achieved by introducing spirituality and narrative therapy practices. Our research pathway has been further shaped by adopting a qualitative research approach within a postmodern, social construction discourse. My research curiosity was invited by both the mind, body and soul divide expressed in psychology; and the healing possibilities of spirituality I have witnessed in both my own and in the lives of others. While my co-travellers predominantly preferred to express their spirituality in terms of Christianity, our narrative pastoral approach to trauma debriefing is offered to people of all religious persuasions.
