Full textThe lambda-calculus is a way to formalize the notion of computation. In this thesis we will be interested in some of these variants introducing non deterministim, and we will focus mostly on a probabilistic calculus. The probabilistic lambda-calculus has been studied for some time, but the probabilistic behaviour has always been treated as a side effect. Our purpose is to give a more equational representation of this calculus, by handling the probabilities inside the reduction rather than as a side effect. To begin with we give a deterministic and contextual operational semantics for the call-by-name probabilistic lambda-calculus. To express the probabilistic behaviour of the sum we introduce a syntactic equivalence in our calculus, and we show it has little consequence on the calculus: reducing modulo equivalence amount to reducing and then looking at the result modulo equivalence. We also prove a standardization theorem. Then using this operational semantics we define a notion of equational theories for the probabilistic lambda-calculus. We extend some usual notions to this setting, and in particular the sensibility of a theory. This notion is quite simple in a deterministic setting but becomes more complicated when we have a probabilistic computation. Finally we prove a generalization of the equality between the observational equivalence, the Böhm tree equality and the maximal coherent sensible lambda-theory. We give a notion of probabilistic Böhm trees, and prove that this forms a model of the probabilistic lambda-calculus. Then we prove a separability result stating that two terms with different Böhm trees are separable, i.e. are not observationally equivalent

Full textIn this thesis relating to the artistic movement Fluxus, we have deepened our knowledge about the role of actors. We can also find significant elements in relation with this Avant-garde that has marked the cultural scene in the sixties on either side of the Atlantic and beyond as well. After a brief exploration of the fundamental role of John Cage, the context carries on with the self-experience of the author of this thesis. An atypical way of being, for he mixes theory and praxis and at the same time he is an art critic and Fluxus artist. A whole life dedicated to Fluxus, overwhelmed by Fluxus. Then come nine interviews spread out from 1974 until 2008. With an exceptional document since the 1974 interview with George Maciunas (the “inventor” of Fluxus) is one of the only three ever made. The other interviews refer to some of the great actors of Fluxus, such as Wolf Vostell, Nam June Paik, Dick Higgins, Yoko Ono, Ben Vautier, Eric Andersen and Ben Patterson. The spirit from which Fluxus arose is taken under the angle of the “conceptual turning point”, the theoretical part par excellence, shared by George Brecht and La Monte Young and later by Henry Flynt. The Fluxus part is granted to Maciunas, who has crystallised all these strong and yet disparate ideas, into a model “Art for Artists”. The constituent forms of Fluxus, the Fluxus concerts are largely described, putting back Fluxus into a lineage : a tradition of historical Avant-gardes at the beginning of the twentieth century

Full textIn 20 the years after the genocide that afflicted Rwanda, the country has made considerable progress towards developing human resources in the public sector. It has kick-started its economy and improved sectors such as public health and education. There is still a need to attract direct foreign investment to boost the economy even further. However, Rwanda needs to take precautionary measures to ensure that it does not fall prey to economic criminality which will impede its economic progress. The fact of the matter is that young transitional democracies are prone to attract economic delinquents who take advantage of loopholes in the law to advance their criminal goals. This is particularly so in a country such as Rwanda, where the government has to prioritise other pressing needs that must be addressed. This paper assesses the extent to which Rwanda is prepared to deal with the menace of money laundering, a threat that may well stunt its ambitions to build a strong economy.

This paper aims to shed some light on the issue. The main objective is to highlight the different forms of trading in influence stipulated in various international agreements and national laws in order to draw a comprehensive picture of this offence. Furthermore, by identifying and critically appraising the core issues connected with trading in influence, this paper aims to provide recommendations which may be of use to states obliged to implement or to consider implementing this offence.

Full textWhat is terrorist propaganda? How can we understand it in all its forms and manifestations? Although seemingly trivial, this phenomenon is an eminently complex reality. In recent decades, free and democratic societies have been hit by this scourge, the scale of which continues to grow. Facilitated by the proliferation of digital media, in particular social networks and online content distribution platforms, the terrorist phenomenon is fueled in a new way. Notwithstanding its profoundly performative character, capable of acting on the world and urging the perpetration of acts of terrorism in the name of political, religious or ideological causes, propaganda remains an expressive activity falling within the sphere of activities protected by freedom of speech. For French and Canadian legislators, the difficulty will mainly lie in finding a fair balance between respect for public order and the protection of freedom of expression, a right considered one of the most precious of human rights. Given the emergence ofthese new legal issues, our thesis will focus on the question of knowing to what extent terrorist propaganda can be criminalized in French and Canadian criminal law, taking into account the restrictions on freedom of expression that this incrimination implies

Full textIn this thesis is given a review of the methods of integrability in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We investigate integrable structures on both sides of the AdS/CFT duality using different methods. On the string side of the duality we observe how the supersymmetry and automorphism of the symmetry group organize the model into integrable one. Then, using the consequences of the finite gap method for the integrable system we perform a one--loop quantization procedure which allows us to compute the one--loop spectrum of the model. We illustrate this method by computing the spectrum of a short string. On the gauge side we review the method of the functional Y--system equations for computing the spectrum of the theory in the finite volume. Due to the existence of the two--particle S--matrix it is possible to use the Zamolodchikov's trick to setup a system of functional equations, which can be later recast as a Hirota equation defined on some domain. In the strong coupling limit these equations can be drastically simplified. This gives us a chance to have an analytic solution of them, which can be compared to the string side computation. These two results are in a perfect agreement

Full textPreventing cartels from forming or detecting and punishing existing cartels should therefore be an important task in every country. This paper shows how South Africa and the United Kingdom deal with this task by introducing criminal sanctions into their competition law for individuals engaging in cartel conduct. As the criminal law is the ultima ratio of a constitutional state, its introduction into competition law needs some justification. In the context of competition law, criminal law is not designed to punish the offender retrospectively but to deter people from cartel conduct according to the utilitarian approach.

Full textThis dissertation explores several intertwined dimensions of decision-making research. In particular, while focusing on decisions under risk and uncertainty, this work illustrates the transversality of approaches that characterize this area of investigation by collecting an experimental study, a theoretical elaboration and an application. The continuous dialogue between these different approaches to decision-making research is critical to its development, as empirical investigations test and inform formal theories and further ensure their meaningful application in theoretical and empirical contexts, thus contributing to virtuous “creative destruction” dynamics in the field. For example, a large body of empirical evidence shows violations of the expected utility theory. In response, decision theory and behavioral economics provided a large variety of nonexpected utility theories. The existing evidence, however, does not clearly discriminate among such theories. Relative to the investigation of the sources of violations, particular attention has been traditionally devoted to testing several variations of the independence axiom. Yet, on the gains domain, many of the most well-known non-expected utility models abide to the minimal behavioral restrictions traditionally known as the axioms P3 and P4 of Savage (1954), that allow to separate tastes, as captured by a utility function on outcomes, and beliefs, as captured by the willingness to bet on events, often a distorted probability. In the first chapter of this dissertation, we derive a non-parametric procedure for testing the separability of tastes and beliefs hypothesis and we apply it to the results of two experiments. While P3 is rarely violated, our test finds widespread and pronounced violations of P4, thus suggesting that the assumption of separation of tastes and beliefs may not hold in empirical settings. On the theory side, the issue of separating tastes and beliefs was apparently closed by a series of papers of Ghirardato and Marinacci on biseparable preferences. Inspired by the findings of the previous chapter, the purpose of the second chapter of this dissertation is to reopen this question by investigating whether, or under what theoretical conditions, such separation actually holds and what its implications are. In particular, we will provide separability conditions in terms of preference midpoints and the novel concept of likelihood midpoints. In the third chapter, we make use of recent developments in decision-making criteria to provide an extension of the seminal biform games setup of Brandenburger and Stuart (2007). While biform games provide the theoretical basis for formal work in value-based strategy, our framework helps reconciling observed behavior in applied contexts with theory. In particular, we apply the results of our setup to the choice of bringing in substitutes to complementers in business ecosystems, a central decision in competitive strategy. Our solution has several advantages. First, it subsumes the original biform games framework and seamlessly integrates recent related work that provides bounds to value capture. Also, it allows solving issues such as the possible non-uniqueness of solutions and invariance to the competitive environment structure while maintaining the role of competition in determining value capture. Finally, it permits richer preferences representations that, for example, can include subjective distortions of objective chances of value capture
Manadir, Abdellah. "Frictions financières : théories et évidences." Doctoral thesis, Université Laval, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/28173.
Full textThis thesis assesses the extent to which two types of financial frictions contribute to the ability of New-Keynesian-type-stochastic dynamic general equilibrium models (DSGE) to reproduce business cycles and the ability of hybrid models (DSGE-VAR) to forecast macroeconomic aggregates. The first type of financial friction originates from a problem of Costly State Verification à la Bernanke et al. [1999] and appears in debt contracts. This type of friction implies a wedge between the expected return on capital and the risk-free rate that depends on entrepreneurial leverage, whereas the wedge is absent in models with no frictions. The second type of friction results from a problem of Costly Enforcement à la Gertler and Karadi [2011], which also induces a wedge between the expected return on capital and the risk-free rate, that is now determined by the change in entrepreneurial leverage. The first chapter of thesis estimates three versions of Smets and Wouters [2003, 2007] using a Bayesian approach. Used as a benchmark, the first version considers financial markets as a veil and thus contains no financial friction. The second version incorporates the Costly State Verification-type-friction à la Bernanke et al. [1999], while the third version includes the Costly Enforcement-type-friction à la Gertler and Karadi [2011]. The estimation results are used to answer to following questions: (i) Are models including financial frictions more compatible with U.S. macroeconomic data than those with no frictions? (ii) which types of financial friction are preferred by the data? Our findings indicate that adding financial frictions improves the New-Keynesian model's fit to data, in terms of data marginal density. In the case of Costly Enforcement problem, these improvements are both substantial and robust, while they are marginal and not robust in the case of the Costly State Verification problem. Second, estimating the risk premium elasticity to entrepreneurial leverage, rather than calibrating it to values commonly used in the literature, helps the Bernanke et al. [1999] model version to perform more well. This finding suggests that this elasticity should be revised (downwards), relative to the prior belief established in the literature. The second chapter estimates three versions of Smets and Wouters [2003, 2007] via the Bayesian methodology for both the U.S. and Euro economies. The first version serves as a basic model and considers financial markets as veil, thereby contains no financial frictions. The second version includes a Costly State Verification-type problem à la Bernanke et al. [1999], while the third one incorporates a Costly Enforcement problem à la Gertler and Karadi [2011]. These three versions pay particular attention to long term trends that are present in data and thus incorporate a labour-augmenting technology process. The chapter then uses estimation results to answer to the following questions: (i) Is the importance of financial frictions different in the U.S. economy and in the Euro economy? Then, (ii) which factors can explain this difference? The main results are: First, the Costly State Verification-type-friction à la Bernanke et al. [1999] is more important in the Euro economy than in the U.S. economy, while the Costly Enforcement-type-friction à la Gertler and Karadi [2011] doesn't appear important to the both economies. Second, the relative importance of financial frictions in the Euro area can be explained by the high estimate of the risk premium elasticity to the leverage in the Euro economy. The third chapter of thesis develops three types of prior information for a VAR model, from a New-Keynesian model with no financial friction, a model incorporating a friction of Costly state Verification à la Bernanke et al. [1999] and a model including a friction of Costly Enforcement à la Gertler and Karadi [2011]. This last chapter then compares the three hybrid models (DSGE-VAR) via the root mean squared forecast errors, in order to answer to the following question: To which extent can the presence of financial structures (frictions) improve the forecasting ability of hybrid model DSGE-VAR? In terms of out-sample forecasts, the results show that the hybrid models with no financial frictions perform as well as those with frictions.

Full textThe main geometrical and symmetry structures of two-dimensional conformal field theories are generalised to the four-dimensional case. In the first part, the theory of higher order frames, that is a generalization of ordinary frames above a manifold, is formulated in a language which enables to realize the parallel between differential jet theory, Cartan geometry, and ordinary gauge theory. In the second part, the notion of Cartan geometry, that is the geometrical framework needed to construct the geometry corresponding to a given symmetry, is introduced. The formalism is explained on some examples : the riemannian geometry one, and the 2D complex, and complex projective, ones. In the third part, the formalism developed in the two first parts is used to construct 4D conformal gravity in a conformally invariant way. The resulting structure generalises the 2D one. The 4D Beltrami differential is constructed, and its properties are derived. In the four and last part, it is shown how the search for a 4D holomorphy concept naturally leads to twistors. Twistor spaces related to conformal structures, and their corresponding geometry, are constructed directly in terms of Cartan geometry. Finally, it is shown how one can understand W-surfaces as twistor curves

Full textThis thesis aims to confront psychoanalysis and U.S queer theories. Queer theorists are ambivalent towards psychoanalysis. For many authors, psychoanalysis is very useful to deconstruct gender, think about homosexualities, transgenderism and various sexual practices. They criticize egopsychology and uncover Freud’s work subversive aspects. Besides, some Lacanian aspects of the reading of Freud which are particularly innovative are unknown, such as Lacan’s theorization of masculine and feminine sexuations. Queer theorists are siding with masculine sexuation, ignoring feminine jouissance. It is obvious that queer theorists' reading has a strong utopian dimension, aiming for a political revolution of the society. More generally, it is the dimension of the real in the Lacanian sense which is unknown and ignored, and, because of that, the singular way in which the subject's body is affected by sexuality

Full textWhat are the relationship between the imprevision theory, the "connaissance acquise" theory, the exceptional circumstances theory and the theory of "associations transparentes" ? The important number of identified theories in french administrative law for naming all the jurisprudences leads to inquire about a common use, however little explored. The first difficulty stems from the term of "theory" itself. Far from being neutral, this term embodies meanings which refer directly to the epistemology of sciences and give a substantive dimension to jurisprudential theories in administrative law.Can we identify and analyse a common ground of all these theories, or is that use only changing and casual ? In others words, an unified meaning of the concept of theory in the jurisprudential analyse can be established ?The identification of jurisprudential theories comes from the highlight of a real category which satisfies to conventional rules, and the legal discourse seems to follow them. Developped through a long process, they are recognized as theories which produce binding legal effects.Furthermore, administrative jurisprudences called "theories" reveal common normative functions. More precisely, they constitute an instrument for the administrative judge in order to implement the control of legality and contribute, in that way, to the vitality of administrative law.In addition, the use of the word "theory" underlines a dogmatical will to let show administrative law and its history in a linear way, without any discontinuity. It has accompagnied all the building process of a distinctive science from the common law, and it still contributes to the strenghtening of administrative law. Thus, jurisprudential theories raise fundamental issues for this matter

Full textIn the present thesis we study the multi-point multi-loop (super)correlation functions of half-BPSmultiplets in N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory. Correlation functions are natural dynamical objectsto consider in any Conformal Field Theory. They are finite quantities and their (super)conformalsymmetry is not broken by divergences. They contain information about many others interestingdynamical quantities of the theory. The Operator Product Expansion being applied to them producessum rules for three-point functions and anomalous dimensions. In the light-cone limit they coincidewith the light-like Wilson loops and scattering superamplitudes. This duality holds both at the levelof the regularized divergent integrals and at the level of their finite rational integrands. The main part of the thesis is devoted to multi-point Born level super-correlators of the stress-tensor supermultiplet. There exists a number of hints that such super-correlators are remarkable dynamicalquantities in N = 4 SYM. Studying the supercorrelators it is convenient to use the Feynman rulespreserving an amount of the supersymmetry. So, we reformulate the N = 4 SYM in the Lorentzharmonic superspace. We deal with Euclidean space and harmonize one half of the Lorentz groupSU(2) x SU(2). The theory is formulated in terms of two chiral-analytic semi-superfields one ofwhich is scalar and the other one is spinor. The action of the theory is a sum of two terms: theChern-Simons action describing the self-dual N = 4 SYM theory and a non-polynomial action whichtakes into account interactions. Since the formulation of the action is chiral the Ǭ-supersymmetry isnon-linearly realized on the pair of fields. The action considerably simplifies in the axial gauge. Wework out corresponding propagators and formulate Lorentz harmonic superspace Feynman rules. Inorder to study nonchiral supercorrelators of the stress-tensor supermultiplet we formulate the relevant composite operator in terms of the chiral-analytic semi-superfields as well.At the chiral level we propose the R-vertex construction of the chiral supercorrelator which turnsout to be rational at the Born level by construction. In order to elucidate the structure of thesupercorrelator we rearrange harmonic Feynman rules introducing a new class of off-shell analyticnilpotent (Grassmann degree two). They are simple building blocks of the super-correlator. Thenwe proceeded to the nonchiral sector and and that the dependence on Ɵ̅ is taken into account by aslight modification of the R-vertices. This modification of the R-vertices is equivalent to a change of the space-time variables from the chiral to analytic bases. So the non-chiral correlator is expressed in terms of a rather special class of non-chiral nilpotent invariants. In the last part of the thesis we study four-point correlation functions of half-BPS operators inthe three-loop approximation in the planar limit. This study is motivated by an integrability basedconjecture for the structure constants. At the three-loop order all known Feynman graph approachesare extremely inefficient. The main obstacle is a huge number of relevant Feynman diagrams andthe complexity of the corresponding loop integrals. However the correlator is almost completely fixedby its elementary properties like symmetries, singularities and planarity. The pole structure andthe super-conformal symmetry specify the rational integrands of the correlators up to a number ofnumerical coefficients. We fix these coefficients using planarity, the crossing symmetry and comparingthe light-cone OPE of the correlator integrands with various weight configurations in the light-likelimit with respect to a pair of points

Full textThis thesis aims at developing nonlinear estimators, namely observers of the type of Luenberger or extended Kalman filter. We first build an observer to estimate internal concentrations in a polymerisation reactor of TOTAL. Using a model and the measurement of flows and temperatures we give a real-time estimation of the concentrations. The estimator was implemented on an industrial plant. Noticing the kinetic equations of chemistry are independent of the choice of units (mol/l of kg/l) we wondered on the possibility to preserve this property when building estimators. We realized this new constraint allows suggesting interesting candidates observers, and fruitful change of variables to study the asymptotic behaviour. Then we developed a general theory on observers and symmetries. The main contribution of the thesis is to isolate a large class of systems for which one can build interesting candidates observers. The error (between true and estimated state) equation has strong properties, reminding the linear stationary case. The theory was applied to several examples of engineering interest, in particular velocity-aided inertial navigation. The last part of the thesis shows the methodology is a useful guide to tackle some examples which do not belong to the theory’s framework. In particular we built an observer for data assimilation in oceanography

Full textWe study the Luttinger model using the Framework of the Internal Space Renormalization Group. This extension of the usual Renormalization strategy allows the construction of the effective action by resumming the modes according to their amplitude in the internal space. Our study is limited to a one-loop approximation and shows that in the vicinity of the Fermi points the model is strongly coupled. We also outline several limitations in the bosonization of the Luttinger Hamiltonian. The study of open system is another challenging issue in physics. The easiest way to describe such system is to consider the system to be in contact with its environment. We shall build an effective theory describing the full system in the Current-Density functional formalism and build the corresponding effective action. We perform the study of the classical and quantum systems which both rely on the use of the Causal Dynamics. We then proceed to a spin-boson two-level quantum field theory. The rapid development of rich and complex structures such as the World Wide Web leads to the statistical physics description of their properties. We propose a new model based on the subtle relations between the individuals on the network that succeeds in developing the scale-free behavior, which in turn is the Hallmark of those complex networks

Full textThink about childhood theories of death supposes to consider death, in the same way as sexuality, as a psychic organizer. However, if death directs the desire, it is not easy to notice its effects on the subject. The subject bears itself of a certain denial in front of finiteness of being so that he does not succumb in to the impossible of death. This impossible shows itself by a frost of desire because of deaths fear or, by contrast, in front of the horror which would show itself from a life which would spatter infinitely. The subject’s denial passes by a plaiting between its childhoods theories of death. We propose three of them, “the return in the mother's breast theory”, “survival theory” and “murder and the lex talionis theory”. It is here that reappear the childhood theories of death according to the events crossed by the grown-up subject. Taking in consideration one’s mortal condition is necessary to desire, as much as it is to cover it. So, beyond this triple relationship with death that childhood theories offers, it could be a position in which the subject would pass, between - two deaths, in order to not give in to the desire

Full textThe study of physical cosmology has reached an exciting era. For the first time in human history, a quantitative model for the formation and the evolution of the Universe exists, which explains a wide range of phenomena and has been tested with incredible accuracy during the last century. Moreover, weare approaching a time when a bounty of high quality cosmological data will be available, allowing us to use cosmology as a tool to test fundamental physics. In particular, as the large-scale structures of the Universe are governed by gravity, cosmology can help us to asses the correctness of Albert Einstein’s general relativity. This idea fueledmost of the work described in this manuscript,in which we study alternative theories to the standard cosmological model and large-scale structure tests for general relativity. In particular, we focus on two scalar-tensor theories of gravity, the K-mouflage models described in Chapter 2 and the ultra-localmodels of gravity presented in Chapter 3. The K-mouflage theories are k-essence models with a non-standard kinetic term that were already studied at the linear and background levels. In this manuscript, we extend this description showing how the scalar field, which is responsible for the late time acceleration of the Universe, has a non-negligible impact on cluster dynamics, arguing that future surveysmay have the power of constraining K-mouflage models via X-ray observations. Next,we study the ultra-local models of gravity, where a scalar field with a negligible kinetic term is added to the Einstein-Hilbert action, investigating how the latter modifiescosmological structure formation and howthese models can be related to super-chameleonmodels.In Chapter 4, we present a cosmic shear data analysis in the context of f (R) and Dilaton models, and we show how current data canaccommodate most of the theories considered, once baryonic and neutrino physicsdegeneracies are taken into account. Finally, in Chapter 5 we present an analysis of consistency relations for large-scale structures, which are non-perturbative relations among correlations of cosmic fields. They are alsovalid in the non-linear regime, where very few analytical results are known, and only rely on the Equivalence Principle and primordial Gaussian initial conditions. This makes them a powerful tool to test general relativity and inflationary models using the cosmologic allarge-scale structures. We provide here the first non-vanishing equaltime consistency relations, which we use to obtain consistency relations involving observational quantities. In this Thesis manuscript, we highlight the major results of the full analysis done in the articles that are appended to the main text, where the reader can quench any thirst for technical details

Full textAristotle's philosophy has given the ground to scientific debates since the antiquity. We have chosen to study the reception of the philosopher's thought and the means of its interpretation, appropriation and transformation in the modern semiotic theories in order to illuminate some specific domains of the modern semiotic theory such as discourse analysis, semiotics of reception and the relation between semiotics and philosophy of language. The founding hypothesis of this research is that the investigation of the references to Aristotle in the semiotic texts can bring to light the differences between the Paris School of semiotics and Eco as far as it concerns the methodological basis on which they found their semiotics (linguistics for the Paris School and philosophy for Eco) and the filters they use in the treatment of modern semiotic questions such as everyday and literary speech, the image and art. From this differentiation derives the epistemological question about the connection and the continuity of the disciplines of language in the scientific area (ontology, philosophy of language, semiotics, semantics, rhetorics) and time (antiquity, the middle ages, today). This thesis demonstrates the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach of communicatory activities by applying this methodological point of view to the examination of two fields of the modern problematics in semiotics, the theory of sign and the semiotics of reception. The interdisciplinary work in humanities and social sciences should be valued in the future research on human communication

Full textArabic metrics has always been approached through the filter of al-khalil's circles' theory. Yet the detailed study of a large number of poems and verses attributed to a hundred of ancient poets reveals great discrepancies between actual practice and an " overgenerative " theory which, as it seems, obliterated a traditional way of apprehending poetical and metrical forms. External metrical analysis provides partial explanations for such presumably ancient categorial notions as qasid, radjaz, ramal and takhli', not only in terms of length but also from an internal quantitative point of view. The results of this external analysis can serve as the basis for internal and historical approaches, the overview of which opens up interesting perspectives : further studies should lead to a better understanding of oral compositional techniques and their evolution through time and space ; and of the perception of the poetical rhythms which poets share with each other and with their audience
