Abstract:
This study aims to describe the baseline of instructional strategies currently deployed by teachers in the form of goal setting, media selection, application of methods, and evaluation of learning in relation to Islamic values in science teaching. This research was designed in the form of a qualitative description by involving 18 Islamic schools spread over three regions in Indonesia, namely Malang, Lamongan, and Yogyakarta. Methods of data collection used observation forms, ethnographic video during the learning process, interviews with education stakeholders, Forum Group Discussion (FGD) with students, and documentation study for 6 months. Although Islamic schools in the selected study areas in Java, Indonesia have embraced the integration of Islam into science teaching, as mentioned in the Core Competencies [KI] in the National Curriculum 2013), however, the implementation of it is still not optimal. In addition, the integration of Islam in science teaching is mostly done by teachers through lecture methods. While most teachers expressed interest in the integration of Islam and science, many teachers expressed anxiety about their competence in addressing complex theological issues. The majority of science teachers in Islamic schools have similar strategies in developing ways to integrate the science curriculum. One key strategy is to browse online and find verses from the Qur'an that seem relevant to the lesson.

Abstract:
Endorsing the role of Universities as caregiving organisations and following an initial report on contemplative practices (CP) in Higher Education by the Institute of Theological Partnerships (2016) and the Mindful Nation UK (2015), a Contemplative Pedagogy Working Group (CPWG) was convened to explore the possibilities to implement contemplative pedagogy and practices at the University. CP such as Buddhist meditation have direct bearings in developing and cultivating compassion. With the intention to foster a culture of gentleness within the University, a survey was administered to 301 students to: 1- probe their attitudes toward the introduction of CP at the University and 2- to collect information on their use of technology. Results indicate that 79% of students will be favourable to the introduction of CP at the University on a voluntary basis and 58% will be keen to engage with the practice. However, if short time practices were to be introduced in classes, 44% will be self-conscious and admit it will affect their practice. Seventy percent admit difficulty with their attention during lectures and exam revisions and 58% are distracted by mobile technologies used in classes, report of distractibility is more marked among the youngest. The survey’s result highlights student’s tendency to consider learning about CP in relation to the mind and emotions should be part of their education. This awareness is indicative of a change in students’ expectation and support the CPWG initiatives in offering regular Zen meditation practices and building up a Cosmic Garden within the University premises. Challenges in fostering a compassionate learning and teaching environment and concerns related to the pervasive use of technology in classes, in particular the correlation between the variety of online multitasking and the worry of feeling self-conscious during CP will be discussed.

Abstract:
The Management Information System (MIS) in Higher Vocational Education such as Polytechnics functions to coordinate and monitor the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education activities, especially at the study program level. The current MIS serves BAAK’s data and information needs, reporting for internal management and providing PD-DIKTI Database. MIS has not fully served the needs of internal customers. The aim of this research is to describe in depth the process of planning and evaluating MIS at the study program level. This research is limited to MIS academic services and support preparation for study program’s accreditation of BAN-PT. The theoretical study is supported by theological foundation of Al Qur’an and Hadits, the philosophical constructivism and the theory of Total Quality of Management (TQM). This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach, explore deeply into the data and information needs for students, lecturers, study program, and BAAK. The informant involved internal Polban namely BAAK’s person, head of department and study program, lecturers and students, reviewing statute documents, strategic plans, academic regulation, laws and government’s regulations related to polytechnic’s management. This research reveals that the current MIS program is not based on customer’s needs yet by paying attention to business processes in planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching and learning process. MIS in implemented stage solely for BAAK needs, does not yet serve data needs for study programs, lecturers and students, including not yet supports the preparations of program study’s accreditation by BAN-PT. Customers are still difficult to get the information needed. The results of the evaluation show that there is a gap between data and information due to several inhibiting factors and a management system that is not yet based on complete data. The novelty of this research is MIS which is integrated with the current management system. MIS is designed comprehensively, not partially on project based. The conclusion is that the MIS program must be designed in the form of grand design that maps all data and information needs for internal and external customers which is customers oriented. MIS implantation will be successful if it is supported by socialization for customers, integrating existing MISs including databases and online communication networks, adequacy of MIS infrastructure include hardware, bandwidth capacity and high speed accessibility of information.

Baltrip, Ryan. "Identifying Standards of Quality in Christian Online Theological Education." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5905.

Abstract:
Changes in computer and communication technology have sparked an educational revolution. For over 20 years, higher education, as a whole, has been adapting to the changing educational landscape. Christian theological education, which is not immune to changing educational realities, has also been adapting to decentralized educational tendencies and experiencing rapid growth in distance and online learning. Christian theological education appears to be a decade or so behind higher education in its contemporary adaptation to online learning,. Questions that higher education began asking over a decade ago about online learning are now part of the contemporary conversation within Christian online theological education. One of those questions asks, “What are standards of quality for Christian online theological education?” The purpose of this study was to identify standards of quality in Christian online theological education as well as issues related to implementing these standards of quality. This study was originally planned as an explanatory, sequential mixed methods study. Due to circumstances encountered during the administration of the originally planned study, this study’s approach had to be adapted to the descriptive survey research method. This study was conducted among an expert sample of distance learning professionals from within Association of Theological Schools (ATS) accredited schools. As indicated by distance learning professionals at ATS-accredited schools, this study: (a) identified 24 standards of quality for Christian online theological education, (b) discovered insights on how well these leaders perceive they are implementing quality standards, and (c) identified areas of both success and challenge when trying to implement quality standards in Christian theological education. These research findings led to two conclusions and produced seven key themes for Christian online theological education. The implications of these findings and suggestions for future research were discussed in order to help Christian theological education not only survive the educational revolution it is immersed in, but to thrive within it.

Tran, Nghi. "Transformative Learning in Online Theological Education: A Case Study of an Online Program at a Theological Seminary." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2011. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc68056/.

Full text
Abstract:
Using Mezirow's (1991) transformative learning theory as a framework, this qualitative case study investigated conditions conducive to transformative learning experiences among theological students in an online program at a seminary. Learning Activities Survey developed by King in 1998, a Community of Inquiry framework proposed by Garrison, Anderson, and Archer in 2000, and semi-structured interviews were employed. Emails were sent to 85 students (81 current In-Ministry M.Div. students and four recent graduates), and 38 (44.7%) took the online survey. A typical participant in this survey was a married White male in his 30s. Of the 38 survey respondents, 30 (78.9%) indicated having experienced transformation during their study. Among those 30, class assignment (66.7%) and a person (60.6%) were two factors that influenced them the most in their transformative learning experiences. Data collected from the online survey and two online courses shed light on the semi-structured interviews conducted with 11 students. A qualitative analysis software ATLAS ti. and Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory were utilized to analyze the data. This resulted in a proposed integrative learning condition model which proposed two conditions conducive to transformation, being in-ministry and using integrative learning strategy. These two conditions were significantly influenced by physical presence. A surprising result was that physical presence does not indicate a three- or four-year stay on campus at a traditional seminary, but is a by-product of a blended, online program which gives students more opportunities to develop quality relationships both during their on-campus intensives and in their local ministries. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the idea of online theological education using a blended model which promotes integrative learning strategy and learners being in-ministry.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates the discourses of e-learning and the way in which these discourses underpin the practices in the field. Having reviewed the relevant literature and looked at the teaching practices in two case studies, I propose that the collaborative learning discourse is very significant in e-learning, but that the didactic and institutional discourses, although not as immediately evident, are equally important in shaping the practices of online teaching and learning. The intertextual nature of all texts, in particular the different voices found in the language of the tasks in the case studies, reveal that the practice associated with online teaching and learning draw on texts and voices from three discourses, collaborative learning, didactic and institutional. Drawing on a Foucauldian perspective of discourse, the investigation of how the discourses operate at the level of practice makes it possible to look at the teaching and learning practices in the field of educational technology from a discursive perspective. In so doing, the historical and contextual perspectives embedded in the teaching and learning practices are taken into account, the aim being to understand the complexity and range of elements that help construct these practices. Finally, the contributions of the study to the field are indentified, and some suggestions are made regarding the possible direction of future research.

Velasquez, Andrea. "Technology-Mediated Caring in Online Teaching and Learning." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3355.

Full text
Abstract:
As online K-12 education becomes more prevalent, there arises a need to examine caring as it is experienced in technology-mediated contexts. The first article in this dissertation examines the definition of the term "caring pedagogies" and synthesizes relevant research helpful to understanding its application in a variety of contexts, including the technology-mediated context. The literature review is organized in the following categories: understanding caring pedagogy (defining and measuring), developing caring characteristics in individuals, developing caring communities, and developing caring in unique contexts. This article concludes that more research related to care is necessary in contexts other than the early childhood education context. The technology-mediated context would greatly benefit from such research. The second article in this dissertation investigates the experience of two teachers and four students in the Open High School of Utah and how they engaged in technology-mediated caring. Findings indicated that teachers care for students in this context by gaining a deep understanding of the student through shared perspective, continuous dialogue, and vigilant observation. Based on this understanding, teachers execute caring actions with the purpose of structuring the learning environment, attending to students' individual academic needs, and attending to students' well-being. Students completed the caring relationship by reacting to teachers' caring actions and acknowledging the care they received. The third article in this dissertation investigates technology choices conducive to creating and nurturing caring relationships in technology-mediated contexts. This article is based on the experience of the two teachers and four students in the Open High School of Utah. This study provides guidelines to help educators make technology choices that are effective in knowing the student, executing acts in the student's best interest, and receiving student reactions. Although research related to information and communication technologies has produced various useful frameworks for online education related to presence and immediacy, investigating technology-mediated caring has the potential to greatly enrich this scholarly discourse.

Abstract:
Practitioner pedagogy can be difficult to manage online. We are teaching professionals to practice without face to face contact. In some cases, technology is available to interact with our students, but it is not the only way of broadening their skills. Teaching family life education and human services using electronic learning formats must incorporate interaction with the student's community. Strategies for engaging students and making them competent professionals will be addressed. Objectives By the end of the presentation attendees will: 1. outline at least three necessary components of a skills based online class. 2. evaluate and discuss barriers to online learning of skills. 3. describe three ways to incorporate practitioner skills into their online course.

Abstract:
An international survey was conducted to assess theological higher education via distance learning as perceived by graduates of Trinity College and Theological Seminary's (Trinity) doctoral programs. The purpose of the study was to determine student-perceived strengths and weaknesses of Trinity's doctoral-level distance education theology programs. Also, the future of distance-learning mediated programs of theological higher education was speculated. A random sample of 400 doctoral recipients was selected from the population of 802 doctoral recipients who graduated from Trinity between the years of 1969 and March 1998. A mailed questionnaire was used to collect data. A total of 203 (50.0%) were returned. Frequency counts, percentage distributions, and chi-square tests of goodness-of-fit were employed to analyze the data. A profile of the modal type of student who would participate in theological distance education at the doctoral level was developed from the demographic variables queried. Responses to questions regarding respondents' educational experiences and coursework were solicited as well. Respondents identified five primary strengths of Trinity's distance education doctoral programs as: the convenience of the program; the immediate application of course content to personal and professional endeavors; the quality of education provided; the Biblical groundedness of the curricula, the materials, and the faculty; and the required reading and research. The three predominant weaknesses of Trinity's distance education doctoral programs as identified by program graduates include: the lack of interaction between students and faculty; the lack of regional accreditation; and course repetitiveness meaning that some courses offered repeated content from prior studies at a lower educational level. It was concluded that the future of theological higher education via distance learning is promising. Trinity has emerged as a dominant distance learning institution as a result of its continued exploration and advancements. However, Trinity and other similar distance education institutions must continually and consistently evaluate their programs and their students' expectations in an effort to transition theological distance education into the 21 st century.

Ziemsen, Eva. "Developing a learning model for teaching film production online." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/63862.

Full text
Abstract:
Through my roles as a film professor, filmmaker and PhD student, I have acquired a strong motivation to develop a learning model for the teaching of film production online. My initial interest for conducting research in this area began a few years ago when I taught a screenwriting workshop in Bhutan. On my return to Canada, I wished there was a way for me to continue teaching my students in Bhutan in the domain of film production. Further research has led me to discover that machinima, a virtual mode of recording animation, could be the solution to teaching almost all aspects of filmmaking, entirely online. Machinima is already very popular amongst educators, both face-to-face and as an online mode of delivery, however, its legitimacy as a cinematic art form has given rise to a controversial debate. My goal was to employ the research method of a/r/tography (standing for artist, researcher, and teacher), to create a complex artistic and academic work to demonstrate that machinima is a valid method of filmmaking and is an immersive mode of teaching film production in the online context. The Art entailed creating a short hybrid film using machinima and live action, entitled, Romeo & Juliette2016. The Research included a literature review that situated my work in the theory that underpins machinima as an art form and in the context of online learning. The Teacher component included a documentary in which I exhibited my film to select ‘critics’, in film, media and film education, and invited them to respond. The documentary was intended to produce discourse around the notion of machinima as an art form and as a teaching tool. Finally, in conclusion, I wrote a response chapter to this interaction and to the project as a whole. This study is highly relevant in the current landscape of media and 21st century education as virtual reality applications are taking hold in the professional filmmaking process and as a teaching tool, and machinima is part of this revolution. Hammond, Kay, and Catherine Powell. Entry-level tertiary student perceptions of challenges when using a wiki: Trust and peer teaching. Unitec ePress, September 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.34074/ocds.12017.

Full text
Abstract:
Wikis are widely used in blended learning educational settings with varying degrees of success. Scholarly attention increasingly regards student perceptions and experiences of using wikis as part of ongoing development. Students in entry-level education often belong to high-needs target groups who particularly require positive experiences for a successful transition into tertiary education. This paper reports action research exploring the use of a wiki by certificate-level students at a tertiary institution. The results showed most students did not engage with the wiki. Qualitative student feedback revealed valuable insight into two major social challenges when interacting online: trust and difficulties with peer-teaching. Recommendations are made regarding these social challenges that should be considered by educators aiming to use a wiki or other collaborative online learning and teaching spaces for entry-level education.

Means, Barbara, and Julie Neisler. Suddenly Online: A National Survey of Undergraduates During the COVID-19 Pandemic. Digital Promise, July 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.51388/20.500.12265/98.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital Promise and Langer Research Associates developed the “Survey of Student Perceptions of Remote Teaching and Learning” to capture the experiences of undergraduates taking courses that transitioned to online instruction in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey explores the nature of college courses as they were taught during the COVID-19 outbreak, the pervasiveness of various challenges undergraduates faced after the transition to remote instruction, and course features associated with higher levels of student satisfaction. Data analyses compared experiences of students from low-income, underrepresented, or rural backgrounds to those of students with none of these characteristics. This survey was administered in the spring of 2020 to a random national sample of 1,008 undergraduates, age 18 and older, who were taking college courses for credit that included in-person class sessions when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and had to finish the course by learning at a distance.

Shalatska, Hanna M., Olena Yu Zotova-Sadylo, and Ivan O. Muzyka. Moodle course in teaching English language for specific purposes for masters in mechanical engineering. [б. в.], July 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31812/123456789/3881.

Full text
Abstract:
The central thesis of this paper is that e-learning courses can have a significant impact on English language for specific purposes (ESP) proficiency of mining mechanical engineering students. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of ESP Moodle-based course “English for Mining Mechanical Engineers” and to reveal the results of its experimental approbation. In order to identify the lectures’ and learners’ needs we have applied the survey research. The survey confirmed the greatest demand for Moodle courses that include all the elements of a coherent training manual to provide self-development of engineering students. The interview results contributed to design of author’s ESP course syllabus. The importance and originality of this study are that to approbate the course materials’ effectiveness two approaches have been adopted simultaneously. The first is blended learning method based on e-learning platform applied in the experimental group and the second one is classic in-class instructor-led studying used in a control group. Students’ progress in ESP proficiency has been assessed using the cross assessment method. The experiment has validated the initial hypothesis that the special online courses focused on honing foreign language skills and integrated in the domain of specific professional knowledge have a beneficial effect on students’ communicative competencies in general. There were identified the advantages of self-tuition based on Moodle platform. The Moodle course lets the teachers save considerable in-class time to focus more on communicative assignments. The findings of this study have a number of practical implications in ESP online courses development.

Abdula, Andrii I., Halyna A. Baluta, Nadiia P. Kozachenko, and Darja A. Kassim. Peculiarities of using of the Moodle test tools in philosophy teaching. [б. в.], July 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31812/123456789/3867.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper considers the role of philosophy and philosophical disciplines as the means of forming general cultural competences, in particular, in the development of critical thinking. The article emphasizes that the process of forming over-subject and soft skills, which, as a rule, include also critical thinking, gets much more complicated under the conditions of the reduction in the volume of philosophical courses. The paper grounds that one of the ways to “return” philosophy to educational programmes can be the implementation of training, using the e-learning environment, especially Moodle. In addition, authors point to the expediency of using this system and, in general, e-learning as an instrument for collaborating students to the world’s educational community and for developing their lifelong learning skills. The article specifies the features of providing electronic support in philosophy teaching, to which the following belongs: the difficulty of parametrizing the learning outcomes; plurality of approaches; communicative philosophy. The paper highlights the types of activities that can be implemented by tools of Moodle. The use of the following Moodle test tasks is considered as an example: test control in the flipped class, control of work with primary sources, control of self-study, test implementation of interim thematic control. The authors conclude that the Moodle system can be used as a tools of online support for the philosophy course, but it is impossible to transfer to the virtual space all the study of this discipline, because it has a significant worldview load. Forms of training, directly related to communication, are integral part of the methodology of teaching philosophy as philosophy itself is discursive, dialogical, communicative and pluralistic. Nevertheless, taking into account features of the discipline, it is possible to provide not only the evaluation function of the test control, but also to realize a number of educational functions: updating the basic knowledge, memorization, activating the cognitive interest, developing the ability to reason and the simpler ones but not less important, – the skill of getting information and familiarization with it.

Barjum, Daniel. PDIA for Systems Change: Tackling the Learning Crisis in Indonesia. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-ri_2022/046.

Full text
Abstract:
Indonesia is facing a learning crisis. While schooling has increased dramatically in the last 30 years, the quality of education has remained mediocre (Rosser et al., 2022). Teacher capability is an often cited weakness of the system, along with policies and system governance. Approaches focused primarily on adding resources to education have not yielded expected outcomes of increased quality. “It is a tragedy that in the second decade of the twenty-first century, some children in Indonesia are not completing primary school and are turned out into the workforce as functional illiterates.” (Suryadarma and Jones, 2013; Nihayah et al., 2020). In the early 2000s, Indonesia began a process of decentralising service delivery, including education, to the district level. Many responsibilities were transferred from the central government to districts, but some key authorities, such as hiring of civil service teachers, remained with the central government. The Indonesian system is complex and challenging to manage, with more than 300 ethnic groups and networks of authority spread over more than 500 administrative districts (Suryadarma and Jones, 2013). Niken Rarasati and Daniel Suryadarma researchers at SMERU, an Indonesian think tank and NGO, understood this context well. Their prior experience working in the education sector had shown them that improving the quality of education within the classroom required addressing issues at the systems level (Kleden, 2020). Rarasati noted the difference in knowledge between in-classroom teaching and the systems of education: “There are known-technologies, pedagogical theories, practices, etc. for teaching in the classroom. The context [for systems of education] is different for teacher development, recruitment, and student enrollment. Here, there is less known in the public and education sector.” Looking for ways to bring changes to policy implementation and develop capabilities at the district level, SMERU researchers began to apply a new approach they had learned in a free online course offered by the Building State Capability programme at the Center for International Development at Harvard University titled, “The Practice of PDIA: Building Capability by Delivering Results”. The course offered insights on how to implement public policy in complex settings, focused on using Problem Driven Iterative Adaptation (PDIA). The researchers were interested in putting PDIA into practice and seeing if it could be an effective approach for their colleagues in government. This case study reviews Rarasati and Suryadarma’s journey and showcases how they used PDIA to foster relationships between local government and stakeholders, and bring positive changes to the education sector.

Nahorniak, Maya. Occupation of profession: Methodology of laboratory classes from practically-oriented courses under distance learning (on an example of discipline «Radioproduction»). Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2022.51.11412.

Full text
Abstract:
The article deals with the peculiarities of the use of verbal, visual and practical methods in the distance learning of professional practically-oriented discipline «Radioproduction», are offered new techniques for the use of these methods during the presentation of theoretical material and the creation of a media product (audiovisual content), due to the acquisition of a specialty in conditions online. It is proved that in distance learning, this discipline is inadmissible to absolutize the significance of verbal methods (narrative, explanation, conversation, discussion, lecture) and that all varieties of verbal methods require the intensification of an interactive factor. Based on its own experience, it has been demonstrated, as with the help of various educational platforms, the most appropriate use of visual learning methods. Particular attention is paid to the fact that practical teaching methods based on professional activities of students acquire priority in their professional training. It has been established that only when parity application of new receptions of verbal, visual and practical methods of online learning may have a proper pedagogical effect and will ensure the qualitative acquisition of the specialty. Training methods – verbal, visual, practical – are intended to provide all levels of assimilation of knowledge and skills to promote the full master of the radiojournalist specialist.
