Abstract:
Abstract The word “gnosis” is widely used in contemporary scholarship in a range of fields including not only the study of the historical phenomenon of Gnosticism, but also in more unexpected areas like translations of Buddhist texts, where the term has taken on a fairly specific collectively understood meaning. Broadly speaking, in the developing consensus visible both in scholarship and in popular culture, gnosis refers to knowledge that transcends ratiocinative, discursive, or dualistic forms of knowledge. Gnosis, broadly understood both in scholarship and to some extent in popular culture, refers to knowledge understood as the transcendence of self/other dualism. Authors discussed include Edward Conze, Theodore Roszak, Carl Jung, Andrew Newberg, April DeConick, Peter Carroll, Andrieh Vitimus, Ken Wilber, and Christopher Bache.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Science and Technology (ST) understood as mechanical Newtonian physics and industry has indeed bypassed Muslim societies - and that’s a good thing. Because with the new ST Muslims can become full participants rather than passive recipients. From the 1960s and 1970s, a few Muslim thinkers sounded the alarm about ST (e.g., Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Ismail Faruqi, and Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas). They were aware that Muslim societies were trying to catch up and join a system of knowledge and technological tools that were both ontologically opposed to Islam and harmful to Muslim cultures. At the same time, thinkers in the West were horrified at the implications of ST for the natural world and for human freedom (e.g., Theodore Roszak, Jerry Mander, Lewis Mumford, Jacques Ellul). Today, from intellectual discourse to popular culture and movies, the idea that the old science and technology has gone wrong is easy to find and accept.

Abstract:
Ecopsycology emphasizes on the intrinsic bond between humans and nature for mutual well-being. This article examines how poetry of corona time expresses human anxieties of environmental loss and sense of alienation from nature and how it makes people aware of their inherent sense of emotional attachment with natural system for their happiness, well-being and meaningful life. The objective of this paper is to investigate humans’ alienation from nature and their efforts for reconnecting to it. To achieve this, the paper evaluates the selected poems using theoretical modality of ecopsychology propounded by Theodore Roszak and Robert Greenway. As a piece of qualitative research, it incorporates interpretive and analytical approaches following the techniques of close reading of the selected texts. Along with the relevant observations of critics, the focus lies on the thematic and textual analysis of the selected poems. The findings of the research unveil that corona time poetry depicts humans’ alienation from nature as a consequence of their indifference to and domination upon it, and the only way for their well-being is reconnection to it.

Abstract:
From the American counter culture to contemporary ecofeminist perspectives, this thesis exposes Theodore Roszak’s works and career while showing the ways in which his ecopsychological proposition is founded in the feminist, ecological, and anticapitalist premises forged during the 1960s in the United States. This dissertation also brings to the attention of the scientific community an innovating and conceptual input which consists in mapping ecofeminist emancipatory trajectories in fiction via the four topoi here defined: the hearth, the edges, the forest and the glade. This spatialization of the concrete and metaphorical places that organize ecofeminist processes of desalienation from patriarcal and neoliberal paradigms is presented via a corpus of sevent female authors from the United States. This thesis eventually defends the idea that the notions of « ecofeminist emancipatory trajectory » and of « the rape of the earth » are constitutive of an ecofeminist approach to literature and cultural studies

Coope, Jonathan. "Pathologizing modernity : critical implications of the conceptions of 'pathology' and 'higher sanity' in the works of Theodore Roszak and Ken Wilber." Thesis, University of Chichester, 2008. http://eprints.chi.ac.uk/826/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I argue that 'critical theorists', and the left in general, have paid insufficient attention to the psychological and pathological dimensions of the problems of modernity, including its environmental predicaments. To address this theoretical lacuna, I critically examine the conceptions of 'collective pathology' and 'higher sanity' as articulated in the relatively neglected work of Theodore Roszak and Ken Wilber, my position being that these two thinkers offer the most sophisticated readings of modernity and its 'ecological crises' in terms of pathology currently available. I also demonstrate a number of crucially significant implications of their work for contemporary critical theory. Consequently, the thesis is organized in two parts: in Part One I examine the work of Roszak and Wilber; in Part Two I explore major, critical implications of their work. The thesis begins with a critical examination of the concepts of 'pathology' and 'higher sanity' in Roszak and Wilber. I subsequently show how a critique in terms of these concepts alerts us to specific legimating tropes in ecocritical theory which have deligitimized competing discursive practices, and how such conceptions address and illuminate an ecological 'blind spot' in contemporary historical theorizing: no such study has been previously attempted. I then argue that conceptions of 'pathology' and 'higher sanity' indicate that debates between eco-centric notions of nature as 'real' and postmodernist notions of nature as a 'social construction' represent a double-bind; a false problem caused by specific unconscious and/or unacknowledged presuppositions. I go on to demonstrate how this double-bind can be overcome by, for example, exploring the psychology of Derridean deconstruction. In its examination of the critical implications of 'pathology' and 'higher sanity', this thesis can be read overall as a way of regrounding a radical ecological critique that is fully 'postmodem' - in the sense of aporetic - yet 'transcendent' at the same time. Consequently, this study is offered as an original resource for radical environmental activists who consider that the 'grounding' of their critique is undermined by postmodern and/or deconstructionist anti-foundationalism; I argue that such fears are 'groundless'.

Abstract:
Abstract The primary terms, definitions, and concepts, including gnosis, Gnosticism, and neo-gnosticism, are discussed in the context of twentieth-century popular scholarship, including the scholarship of Hans Jonas, Theodore Roszak, Ioan Culianu, Harold Bloom, and April DeConick. Culianu’s important concept of conceptual “bricks” in the context of how Gnostic concepts emerge in contemporary society as neo-gnosticism. This concept leads to a discussion of gnostic dualism and gnostic spectra, including antignosis, inquisitionalism, political gnosis, and transcendence. Also considered are cosmological and metaphysical gnosis, and gnosis in popular, occultist, and Buddhist translation contexts. An intellectual framework, particularly in terms of neognosticism and gnosis, is provided for the book as a whole.

Abstract:
This chapter details William Howard Taft's accomplishments in public land conservation. Although his record on public lands was marred by the Ballinger–Pinchot controversy and paled overall in comparison with his predecessor's, his term was not without some notable accomplishments, including a few bold actions that surpassed even Theodore Roosevelt's. Taft established only one national forest during his tenure—the 300,000-acre Santa Rosa National Forest in Nevada, in April 1911—and the next year he added nearly 400,000 acres to the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota. Generally more comfortable with fine-tuning than taking bold action, Taft adjusted the boundaries of a number of national forests that Roosevelt had created. Mostly this was done to exclude areas with agricultural potential. He also reversed all the additions to national forests that Roosevelt had made from Indian reservations in 1909. As a result of these and other actions, the total area of national forests actually shrank by a few million acres while Taft was in office.

Abstract:
Az én központi témám a piacorientáció, amelynek fejlődésére most a társadalmi ügyek iránti empátia szempontjából tekintek.
