Abstract:
It is traditionally considered that Xenophon intentionally suppresses the image of the Theban commanders in his work “Hellenika”, where even Epaminondas - the winner of The Battle of Leuctra – is not mentioned by name. The suppression of the commanders is often explained by his disaffection towards the Thebans, because of his participance in The Battle of Coronea supporting Sparta against the Thebans. Furthermore, he lost his son Gryllus fighting the Thebans at Mantinea. At our point of view, this negative judgement of Xenophon’s view on Thebes and the Thebans is explained first of all by Athens’ traditional education, which created a negative literary tradition towards Thebes. The literary tradition was established long before Xenophon’s existence and continued after him. The tradition was established as response to the border conflicts between the Thebans and the Athenians, that continued during archaic and classical periods of the history of Greece. The anti-Theban literary tradition is also supported by evidence of material culture, namely the border system of defense. Studying these materials, allows us to conclude that at the time of Xenophon, in the first half of the 4th century BC, at a time when their oppositions escalated against each other, the Athenians and the Thebans literally observed each other over the fortress walls. With regard to Xenophon, his hatred against the Thebans is mostly visible in his work “Hellenika”. The main argument that Xenophon uses is retelling of Pelopidas’ speech that he gives at the court of the Persian king, where the first thing he mentions is the Thebans’ pro-Persian attitude. Epaminondas is mentioned in the “Hellenika” only in episodes of his career as a commander where he cannot achieve his goals or develop past success.

Abstract:
Papaver somniferum commonly known as Khashkhash /Afyon, belongs to family Papaveraceae. It is one of those traditional plants, which have a long history of usage as medicine. The opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) produces some of the most widely used medicinal alkaloids like morphine, codeine, thebain and porphyroxine which are the most important component of this plant. Apart from these alkaloids, opium poppy produces approximately eighty alkaloids belonging to various tetrahydrobenzylisoquinolinederived classes. It has been known for over a century that morphinan alkaloids accumulate in the latex of opium poppy. According to Unani literature, it possesses most important theurapeutic values as modern literature and research studies also prove its therapeutical importance. It is used as analgesic, narcotic, sedative, stimulant as well as nutritive, etc. It is also useful in headache, cough, insomnia, cardiac asthma, and biliary colic. In this paper we have provide a review on habitate, pharmacological actions, phytochemical with special refrence to Unani Medicine. In this review, an attempt is made to explore the complete information of Papaver somniferum including its phytochemistry and pharmacology. Key words: Khashkhash, Biliary colic, Alkaloid, phytochemistry.

Abstract:
This article argues, in a series of discrete but interconnected notes, that Statius engages consistently and consciously with mythographical works—prose collections and exegesis on myth as myth—in the creation of his two major catalogs in theThebaid, the catalog of Argive allies at 4.1-344 and that of Theban allies at 7.243-373. Both are patently based on Homer’s ‘Catalog of Ships’, but Statius reshapes his model by engaging ingeniously with mythographical and geographical works in prose to invent a unique pre-Iliadiclandscape. This paper also explores some of the literary ways in which Statius reinvents Homer’s catalog, including offering his readers mythological puzzles that require knowledge both of Homer’s text and subsequent scholarship thereon.

Abstract:
The current research is mainly a preliminary study of some of the most significant graffiti located in the wadi C2, in the context of the ongoing investigation of the C2 Project. The Royal Cache Wadi Survey, and tries to clear out the motivations behind the location and concentration of graffiti in the area, probably related to the sacred character of the place. Through the analysis of C2 graffiti published in the work Graffiti de la Montaigne Thebaine, which are being revised in depth, the types of figurative graffiti are established, as well as those figures connected to specific textual graffiti, maybe later additions. The study of the figurative graffiti follows a comparative approach considering them in connection to the landscape and to contemporary and older graffiti in the wadi, and relating them with the presence of graffiti in Theban tombs, which have been analysed by Alexis Den Doncker and Chloé C.D. Ragazzoli. The analysis of an interesting graffito with a hunt in the desert scene (graffito 3652) will be a case-study to understand the reception of the funerary art of the New Kingdom and its transference into the rocky wall of the Theban mountains. In all, we will try to explain the presence of a significant corpus of graffito recorded in the wadi C2, within an inhospitable environment but that maybe had a sacred character linked to a religious cult. The existence of this type of human activity, graffiti, could be understood as an example of ‘space appropriation’, an intention to leave a mark on the site by creating a text or just making a drawing.

Hulls, J. M. "The role of kingship in Statius' Thebaid." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2007. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1446011/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses Statius' Thebaid and the relationship it creates with VirgiVs Aeneid and the emperor Domitian. The poem constructs itself as a competing source of authority, both poetic and ideological. The poem aims to supersede Virgil's masterpiece as a poetic authority whilst providing Domitian with imperial, and in particular, regal ideology. The thesis examines three key qualities, virtus pietas and dementia in this regard, showing the manner in which Virgilian and Augustan interpretations are undermined and new understandings of these ideas are provided for Domitian's principate. The thesis then examines the role tyranny and tyrannical behaviour plays in the poem. The Thebaid portrays tyranny in unusual ways and promotes surprising responses to tyrannical rule. Throughout the poem, Statius is working to provide his audience, especially Domitian, with an educational framework for understanding models of kingship Domitian should learn from the negative examples the Thebaid provides. Statius uses the Thebaid as a step in a poetic oeuvre whose design is nothing less than to make the poet himself powerful by becoming the poetic voice on which his emperor depends.

Manasseh, James. "A commentary on Statius' 'Thebaid' 1.1-45." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/11354.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation discusses the proem of Statius' Thebaid (1.1-45) and the analysis of the text is split between an introduction, three extended chapters and a lemmatized commentary. Statius' acknowledgements of his literary debts, in particular Virgil, encourages, if not demands, an intertextual reading of his poetry. As such, my first chapter, Literary Models, looks at how Statius engages with his epic models, namely Homer, Virgil, Lucan and Ovid, but also how he draws upon the rich literary Theban tradition. Like all Roman poets, Statius is highly self-conscious of his craft, and draws upon Hellenistic and lyric models to enrich his epic and define himself as an exemplary poet. I will argue that the proem offers a useful lens for analysing the Thebaid and introduces his epic in exemplary fashion, in the sense that he draws attention to the concept of opening his epic with the use of traditional tropes (namely, the invocation of inspiring force; a recusatio; an imperial encomium and a synopsis of the poem's narrative). Considering the importance of origins in the Thebaid, and the inability to escape them, I consider the proem, in this sense, the origin of the poem itself insofar as elements of it are constantly ‘remembered' and reiterated throughout the poem. The central feature of the proem is the encomium to Domitian, in which Statius advises Domitian to realize his own limits and hence retain order of the world he rules over, articulating contemporary concerns about succession and empire. Statius, in a similar manner, expresses intent to impose limits upon his own poem, which prompted me to write the chapter entitled Restraint. The third chapter, Characterisation, draws upon the discussions in Literary Models and Restraint in an analysis of the heroes introduced at 1.41-45.
