Full textThis study focuses on the underground of amphitheaters in the Roman North Africa provinces from the 1st century BCE to the 4th century CE. The research initially concentrated on literary and iconographic sources that describe moments of spectacle, and then on the compilation of a comprehensive architectural corpus centered on Africa. However, the subject of our research is based on a described reality that may not necessarily have tangible evidence in the field. It pertains to the arrangement of underground spaces in amphitheaters and the various techniques and processes employed to create surprise effects for the spectators. Firstly, we revisit the contextualization of the subject the historiography of the research and provide a chronological synthesis of the evolution of spectacles and underground spaces. Subsequently, we assembled a corpus of North African amphitheaters equipped with underground facilities. Furthermore, we conducted an architectural analysis of nine African amphitheaters, with the observations forming the basis for a reflection on the technical design and organization of different underground components, an examination of perishable elements, and the proposal of a suitable typology for organizational modes. The analysis concludes with three syntheses aimed at addressing architectural, spatial, and social questions, including the necessity of underground spaces for the functioning of the spectacle, the multifunctionality of spaces, the movement of cages and teams, and the preparation of performances and their effects on the audience

Full textWe have tried to demonstrate that the image given to Berber leaders in antique sources, all favorable to Rome and conveyed by contemporary historians, is often a misrepresentation of reality. These very sources, thanks to the information they give, have allowed us to determine different geographical perimeters of these leaders' influence and the constant change of their states frontiers; they also allowed for the understanding of the nature of their relations with external worlds. These relations are essentially conflicting with Carthage and Rome and cultural with the Greek world

Full textThe « Gallo-roman theatre » has always been a sensitive subject among french archaeologists. Since Albert Grenier’s theory on the « theatre-amphitheatre » to Françoise Dumasy and the renewal of studies about roman entertainement buildings, roman theatres in Gaul have always been considered as different buildings compared to the classical theater pattern suggested by Vitruvius in his de Architectura. Many different reasons were frequently mentioned to explain the particular forms of « Gallo-roman theatres ». The intended purpose of this PhD is not to give a definitive definition of what roman theatres in Gaul could be -in fact, too few of them were excavated. Nevertheless, it is possible trought a regional study of roman theatres in north-western Gaul to have a glimpse of one of the most interesting moments of the adaptation of a roman theater in what has been considered as a remote region of the roman empire

Full textThe archaeological map of North Africa is dotted with funeral sites and monuments, of inestimable value covering different periods from prehistory to contemporary time. This fringe, so rich in information, is subject to multiple factors of deterioration and omitted from backup operations conducted up to now. Except a few. Once destroyed, this category of heritage is not renewable, it is imperative to preserve and ensure its conservation to allow continuity between past, present and future. This present research sheds light on the problematic of the valorization of funeral sites and monuments, through the study of ancient royal mausoleums. These precious latter are the witnesses of a Berber autochthonous architecture influenced by the foreign Mediterranean style. The mausoleum of Medracen in Batna is remarkable and unique for the study and understanding of this kind of mausoleums, as well as from typological perspective (choice of site, study of plans and volumetry, construction technique, materials, architectural elements), also from the pathological view (current situation and diagnosis). At the end of this study, we formulate a set of recommendations concerning the restoration and the valorization of the tomb, as well as its site. Then we propose a virtual 3D restitution test of the Medracen, in order to integrate the BIM in the conservation of the archaeological heritage in Algeria

Full textDespite hundreds of books and articles devoted to the pre-roman coinage in North Africa, there is hardly any study prepared for this geographical species such as the studies on Greek and Roman coins. It was before this unsatisfactory situation we did the project to gather homogeneous and heterogeneous batch of monetary collection of the Algiers National Museum of Antiquities. Another major motivation prompted us to initiate this study; it is total absence of any comprehensive catalog gathering this large mass of coins, discovered in different regions of Algeria since 1835 to date. It is true that Punic Monetary Studies, Numidia and Mauretania kings and cities were not too attracted the interest of researchers, mainly due to a simple lack of access to material stored in museums, our thesis gathers treasure of Bougie and Ikosim constituting the largest pre-roman money of Algiers Museum but also heterogeneous batches kept in reserves gathered largely by French collectors. All this monetary equipment, we tried to place it in its historical, archaeological and monetary context

Full textThis dissertation addresses the problem of the transition from euergetism to Christian charity. The approach focuses on gifts to communities in Late Antique North Africa from the third century to the sixth century. The study uses epigraphical and literary documents and includes anthropological perspectives on gift-giving. During Late Antiquity, euergetism (public benefaction) changes and disappears slowly. According to most current theories, euergetism would have been replaced by a new form of generosity, based on 'Christian charity'. Progressively converted to Christianity, the Romano‑Africans would have given up classical civic generosity, turning instead to the Christian communities. This dissertation studies the discourse and practice of gift-giving and challenges the idea of a transition from euergetism to charity, showing that both types of gifts coexisted in early Late Antiquity. This theory clarifies the chronology of Late Antique generosity and analyzes the expression 'Christian euergetism'. Finally, the study examines the uses of benefaction and shows that gift-giving strengthens social bonds while simultaneously generating tension

Full textAll people and culture celebrate the death for peace of the dead persons and the living one. We are interested in the question of the funeral rites in the first centuries of christian Church of the North Africa. That is why we entitled our subject :" The funeral rites of Early Christian North Africa of the 3rd in the 5th century. In the light of Tertullian, Cyprian, Lactantius and Augustine's works". We try to understand the contents of the funeral rites which presided over the Christian celebrations in honor of the dead in the christian environment of the North Africa. How did the Christians celebrated the death in the first centuries? What are the points of view of the first christian writers in the Africa Church on the pagan funeral that the Christians went on celebrating, and what is their contribution about the cult of dead in the Christian area? About the North Africa at the beginning of our era and during Roman Empire, the funeral celebrations first concerned the families. Thanks to Augustine, at the end of the 4th century and at the beginning of the 5th one, we can notice an important evolution of celebrations in honor of the dead that Tertullian, Cyprian and Lactantius had already initiated. They also acquire at this moment an ecclesial dimension, especially with the cult of the martyrs and their relics. To throw light on the funeral subject in the north Africa, it is necessary to understand the history of the pagan cult of the 3rd to 5th century
