Abstract:
This chapter covers the basics of managing surgical imaging across one or more theatres/operating rooms, with examples of potential pitfalls and errors that may occur and how to remedy them. Professional working and management of conflict and issues is also covered, at the level of both the individual radiographer and the team manager. As C-arm systems are expensive, it is unlikely that each operation theatre in a hospital will have its own, and imaging systems will hence be shared across the theatre department. It is therefore important for radiographers working in theatre departments to manage their resources and coordinate with theatre teams to avoid delaying procedures.

Burden, Michael. Dibdin at the Royal Circus. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198812425.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1782, Dibdin entered into a partnership with Charles Hughes to set up a new entertainment venue, the Royal Circus. Its unique feature was the combination of an equestrian ring with allegorical and musical entertainments on a proscenium-arch stage, an innovative hybrid that drew upon the respective talents of Hughes and Dibdin. This chapter analyses how the Circus sought to compete with its rivals through its architecture and location, spectacle, music, novelties (including performances by children), and the mixing of genres and forms. Ultimately, however, Dibdin’s time at the Circus ended in ignominious disputes, a product of licensing problems, but also a failure to collaborate successfully in the manner demanded by this form of entertainment. Dibdin’s spell as a theatre-manager at the Circus thus reveals the wider driving forces—competition, innovation, miscellany, and collaboration—that lay behind the flourishing of London’s minor theatres in the late eighteenth century.

Abstract:
This chapter traces May Irwin’s life from her early move from Canada to America in a vaudeville act with her sister, Flo Irwin. Her apprenticeship with Tony Pastor is reviewed in detail, as is her subsequent split with Flo to work with Augustin Daly. Daly represented a new kind of manager-director in American theatre who used nineteenth century notions of realism on the stage. Irwin’s combined natural ability and technical training assisted her rise to stardom when she left Daly’s company for financial reasons. The chapter considers factors contributing to 1890s theatre growth, the emergence of new theatre audiences, and the success of the Keith-Albee Circuit. The chapter concludes with Irwin’s success in The Widow Jones as she becomes America’s “reigning Queen of Comedy.”
