Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Robert T. Motts's last years and how the Pekin Theater fared after his death in 1911. It first considers the competition faced by the Pekin during the period from other theaters on The Stroll, including the New Grand Theater and the Frank L. Gale Piano Company, and goes on to discuss Motts's efforts to ensure that his theater's position at the top of The Stroll was not just a matter of geography but also one of prestige, popularity, and profitability. It then examines Jesse A. Shipp's musical comedies written for the Pekin, including The Lime Kiln Club, as well as the songs that figured prominently in his shows for the theater. It also describes the closure of the Pekin after Motts's death and its resumption of operations on September 5 with a five-act melodrama called Tallaboo, followed by other shows such as “Dixie” musical comedies.

Full text
Abstract:
This introduction lays out the direction of the book on the whole by discussing the movie palace, Ben Schlanger, modernism, and new cinema histories. Schlanger’s life and career are briefly introduced, and the importance of using archival materials and the Better Theatres section of Motion Picture Herald for documenting Schlanger’s theory of theater design is explained. From such writings, one can gather that Schlanger’s ideal theaters would be places of both bodily passivity and contemplation, yet also of immersion in the sense that the local environment and fellow viewers would fall away in service of the screen. Furthermore, the term “neutral” is examined via Bertrand Russell and neutral monism; in addition, the introduction explores the neutral and neutralization’s connections to the apparatus. All of these strands are connected via a modern approach to spectatorship explicated by Schlanger in his theaters.

Semmes, Clovis E. The Problem of Race and Chicago’s Great Tivoli Theater. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252037023.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter historicizes the building of “the great palace theaters” of the early twentieth century, paying particular attention to real-life racial politics. Inspired by the architectural designs of the Chateau de Versailles, the Tivoli Theater was located in Washington Park with its 85 percent white population. The theater, originally built in 1921 for white neighborhood residents, employed a number of black men and women in service capacities. Due to gradual demographic shifts, Tivoli Theater management pursued a policy of separate seating for audiences for the live performances and film exhibitions. The chapter notes that the ornate theaters, including the Regal Theater, which was the black counterpart to the Tivoli Theater, sought to sell the feeling of being upper class while giving access to all classes.
