Abstract:
The volume is a collection of the papers from a study seminar held at the University of Florence Faculty of Education and Training Sciences in March 2012 entitled Formazione e orientamento al lavoro. Le sfide della disabilità adulta. The aim of the initiative was to highlight a topic/problem which has little or no resonance in civil society, or in study and research contexts, namely, training and career guidance for disabled adults. The volume also recounts a course of studies carried out by Le Rose, a cooperative from the municipality of Florence, involving empirical research on the relationship between disability and job placement. As well as proposing an interdisciplinary and multifaceted reflection on a definitely innovative topic, the intention is to emphasize the central place of work in the lives of all people and the role that suitable education and training plays in constructing the adult identity. Care for the place where the job training is carried out, as well as attention to the relationships and actions pursued by the workers undertaking to develop job placement programmes, are central dimensions for the construction of a renewed culture of inclusion, citizenship and social and personal recognition.

Syed, Almas, Robert Evans Heithaus, and Chet R. Rees. Elimination of Post-Procedural Bleeding After Placement of Tunneled Dialysis Catheters. Edited by S. Lowell Kahn, Bulent Arslan, and Abdulrahman Masrani. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199986071.003.0047.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how to prevent postoperative bleeding with the placement of tunneled dialysis catheters. Tunneled intravenous chest catheters, particularly dialysis catheters, sometimes result in oozing or frank bleeding from the incisions during the first 24 hours after placement. This problem is exacerbated by the large diameter and stiffness of these catheters. Moreover, patients requiring these catheters frequently suffer from abnormal hemostasis profiles—an elevated international normalized ratio, thrombocytopenia, or abnormal platelet function due to uremia is commonly seen. The technique discussed in this chapter ensures that the potential bleeding sites throughout the operative site and tract are coated and permeated by a hemostatic agent.

Brodņevs, Deniss. Analysis of the Performance of Cellular Mobile Networks for the Remote-Control Systems of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Summary of the Doctoral Thesis. RTU Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.7250/9789934227097.

Full text
Abstract:
The Thesis is concerned with assessing the suitability of LTE (4G) cellular networks for the remote control of low-flying UAVs. To solve this problem, an approach to the analysis of the delay values in cellular networks has been developed, which makes it possible to estimate the delays of individual cells and overall cellular network. Requirements for delays in the UAV control channel were developed, conclusions were drawn about the suitability of the LTE network as a communication solution for the UAV remote control. A method for calculating the effect of parallel redundancy is proposed, and an experimental assessment of the possibility of using two existing solutions for parallel redundancy in LTE networks is carried out. In addition, a compact technical solution for analyzing the level of base station signals was demonstrated.

Rajagopalan, Ram E. Management of corrosive poisoning. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199600830.003.0329.

Full text
Abstract:
Corrosive poisoning, typically with household chemicals, is a common problem in children and adults. As ingestion by adults is often intentional, they are usually associated with larger volumes of strong agents and have the potential to create more severe injury than that observed in the accidental ingestions commonly seen in children. The goal of acute care in these cases is to stabilize acute compromise of haemodynamics and to ensure patency of the injured airway. Blind placement of nasogastric tubes and attempts at dilution or neutralization of the ingested chemical are potentially hazardous and should be avoided. Early identification of oesophageal or gastric perforation by clinical evaluation and radiological testing will lead to early and appropriate surgical interventions for these complications. The primary focus after initial stabilization is to evaluate the extent of gastrointestinal injury by early endoscopy. The application of a standardized score to grade the injury allows risk stratification, the planning of nutritional support and referral for appropriate management of the chronic sequelae of scarring and stenosis of the injured gastrointestinal tract. No specific medical therapy can attenuate the extent of damage acutely nor alter the progression of chronic changes.

Baldwin, Andrew, ed. Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialties. 11th ed. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198827191.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialties covers each of the 14 core medical specialties encountered through medical school and Foundation Programme rotations. Packed full of high-quality illustrations, boxes, tables, and classifications, it is ideal for use at the direct point of care, whether on the ward or in the community, and for study and revision. Each chapter is easy to read and filled with digestible information, with features including ribbons to mark your most-used pages and mnemonics to help you memorize and retain key facts, while quotes from patients help the reader understand each problem better, enhancing the doctor/patient relationship. With reassuring and friendly advice throughout, this is the ultimate guide for every medical student and junior doctor for each clinical placement, and as a revision tool. This new edition has been reordered to follow a logical progression through the specialties, starting with an examination of the subjects of obstetrics, gynaecology, and paediatrics before moving on to ophthalmology, ear, nose, and throat (ENT), and dermatology. Orthopaedics and trauma are explored, leading through to emergency medicine, pre-hospital emergency medicine, and anaesthesia. Psychiatry and general practice are discussed before moving on to eponymous syndromes, and the book is rounded off by a new final chapter on doctors’ health and performance. Key references are flagged throughout, and included in a separate online resource.
