Abstract:
This thesis offers a reconstruction and analysis of a debate about responsibility, and causation initiated by Plato, and continued by the Stoics. The pivotal moment of the discussion is a problem I call ‘the greatest difficulty,’ found in Plato’s Parmenides. The debate, however, involves a complex network of arguments including subordinated or parallel discussions about ontology, method, ethics, and epistemology. Instead of isolating the main topic, I highlight the structure of the debate, and the interconnection between its parts, to show the complexity and sophistication of the argumentation in both Plato and the Stoics, and the depth of the Stoics’ engagement with Plato’s works. The motivation for doing this is to better understand many of the otherwise unexplained and odd starting points of the early Stoic philosophy. But since this requires a reconstruction of the dialectical background the Stoic texts assume, this means that the bulk of the thesis is devoted to discussing Plato. The hope is that by showing the structure of the debate in Plato’s dialogues, the connections in the Stoic fragments will show with more clarity. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first two are dedicated to Plato’s discussion of causality and responsibility in Phaedo 95e8-105c7, and Republic 6, 506d7- 509c4. The third chapter discusses ‘the greatest difficulty’ in Parmenides 133a11-135c4 as an objection to the main arguments of the previous dialogues. In chapter four, I analyse how Plato revisits the greatest difficulty in Sophist 245e6-249d5. Finally, in chapter five, I examine surviving evidence from the early Stoics, to argue that they engaged with Plato’s ongoing debate via the Sophist, and that their views on these topics are a careful continuation of this debate.

Full text
Abstract:
First, this thesis outhnes part of the thought of some pre-Socratic thinkers, particularly Heraclitus. In doing this, I explore the historical provenance of certain ideas which came to be important in Stoicism. It then moves on to look at the Stoic view of 'physics', including some comparison with Epicurus and Aristotle, and with a focus on the concept of the continuum. The third chapter attempts to synthesise a common problem arising from a belief in the continuum, namely a problem of indeterminacy. In the fourth chapter, certain characterisations of Stoic epistemology are considered, along with an overview of recent interpretations of the Stoic theory of impressions. It concludes with the thought that at certain crucial points - such as whether impressions themselves are to be thought of as true and false - the Stoic position is underdetermined with respect to the evidence. Pursuing this thought into the fifth chapter, we see the evidence as being equivalently consistent with a 'two-tier’ theory of perception, where impressions themselves are understood as neither true nor false in any sense, but iu which 'the true' arises as a result of the transformative effect of reason. This theory is shown to connect with verbalisation through the 'rational impression'. This leads to the suggestion that the Stoics had a linguistic diagnosis for some problems in philosophy, arrived at by their reflections on ambiguity and etymology. In the final chapter, an account of intersubjectivity is explored, which preserves for the Stoics the claim that their truth has an objective character and is thus appropriate for a 'dogmatic' philosophy.

Abstract:
This thesis offers new philosophical and literary interpretations of Seneca's 'De ira'. It takes as its starting-point the observation that both the philosophical position on which the text relies and the way in which it is organised appear to be chaotic, and it investigates how far and why this is the case. It shows that a coherent philosophical position underlies the text but that the text presents it as incoherent, and that it does this for therapeutic purposes. Similarly, it shows that the text is organised in a far more orderly way than has been previously appreciated, and it explains how the (apparent) disruption of that organisational system serves the text's therapeutic function. In making these arguments, it presents new readings of the De ira that reveal the text's philosophical and literary qualities, arguing that it constitutes a more sophisticated response to Seneca's philosophical predecessors than previous accounts have claimed, and that the text, as it progresses, introduces new therapeutic strategies that provide 'safety nets' should its earlier principal strategies have failed. The thesis aims to be methodologically innovative in using Seneca's descriptions of emotional responses as well as more explicit theorising to reconstruct his philosophical position and in suggesting a new approach to interpreting the role of interlocutors and addressees in didactic and dialogic texts.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is the relationship of the psychology and epistemology of the philosopher Epictetus (c.55-135 A.D.) to the Stoic tradition to which he belonged. Epictetus' psychology is characterised by the subsuming of psychological functions and development under the single term prohairesis, and his epistemology under a corresponding term 'use of impressions' (chrêsis phantasiôn); the two terms being used largely interchangeably. The status of the prohairesis as a faculty is investigated and it is concluded that it is the principal over-arching faculty of the governing-principle of the soul (hêgemonikon), and thus occupies a similar position to that occupied by Reason (logos) in the Stoic tradition. Prohairesis is used to define the 'end' and 'good' for man in Epictetus' teaching, displacing 'wisdom' and 'virtue' with 'prohairesis as it ought to be'. Epictetus thus seeks to reflect the concerns of the 'person making progress' by making the end an extreme point on a continuum of mental and moral states on which he already occupies a place. The self-contemplating ability of prohairesis allows it to be used to define the human self as a single unified consciousness, and also distinguish it from 'external' things outwith our power. The redefining of all things external to the mind as outwith our power is Epictetus' most significant innovation. Epistemology is closely linked to psychology. The 'use of impressions' involves using 'preconceptions' (prolêpseis) and 'rules' (kanones) to test incoming impressions. The aim is not to allow any false judgement to be installed permanently in the prohairesis and thus hinder moral progress. The substitution of the term judgement (dogma) for 'cognition' (katalêpsis) allows Epictetus to draw attention to the need to replace poor judgements with better ones. The thesis concludes that Epictetus introduces a number of innovations to Stoicism and also develops established doctrines to reflect his emphasis on the 'inner life' and on the moral development of ordinary people.

Abstract: By reading through Seneca¿s Epistulae morales one notes that a considerable part of his doctrine is based on harmony, a concept that has not received the deserved attention in Senecan researches. While urging Lucilius in the search for wisdom, Seneca uses a great variety of images and examples that refers explicitly or implicitly to many kinds of harmony, e.g.: harmony between speech and deeds, life and speech, style and character, actions and nature, will and fate, body and soul, between actions among themselves. It was verified that such a ¿harmony¿ usually is not named by a single term or expression, but is indicated by words with similar acceptances. The study of the idea of conuenientia ¿ the straight Latin translation of the technical term homología (¿harmony¿ in Zeno¿s Stoicism) ¿ confirmed that Seneca also makes use of other words, that are more familiar to the current Latin language, among which there are concordia, consonans, consentire, constare and congruere. Excerpts of Seneca's philosophical letters that have been proved to hold valuable arguments to the study of the ¿harmony¿ were translated into Portuguese and annotated. The introductory study concerns about the particular way by which Seneca presents such an important Stoic concept in the selected corpus. The polissemy and images in the investigated texts play a central role in the understanding of the philosophical notion here considered.

Abstract:
In this thesis, Seneca&rsquo
s notion of self as self-love and the problem of self-deception are analyzed. In examining three types of self-love, &ndash
ignorant, progressing selves,&ndash
three models of self-deception are discussed. Self-deception is related to the problem of self-knowledge. I discuss the nature of self-love as self-esteem and self-preservation and self-shaping all of which are innate qualities and develop into more complex forms of knowing. Passions are concrete examples of the representations of deceived self
central to the overestimation of indifferents, the deceived self displays a pattern of reasoning that creates a paradox between what the self intends to do and what it actually appears or what the self wants to see himself as and what it actually is. In discussing various types of self-deception, it is argued that problem of deception can hardly be overcome practically even by education, although it is naturally possible. While the ignorant deceive themselves beyond their recognition, in the case of the educated selves, the tension between the knowledge of ignorance and the desire to be the person play an important role in self-deception. No one except the sage is free from self-deception. The thesis deals with the issue of self-knowing as a scarce possibility.

Abstract:
In the following thesis, I argue that to contextualize Machiavelli’s republican thought in his Italian humanist heritage permits us to understand how Machiavelli reaches back not only to an Italian pre-humanist inheritance of liberty as freedom from servitude, but to a Stoic conception of agency which he inherits and shapes in that concept of liberty. While my analysis of Machiavelli and his humanist heritage is in fundamental agreement with that of Quentin Skinner in The Foundations of Modern Political Thought, it develops however the implications of two theses that Paul O. Kristeller outlines in his works on Italian humanism: the eclectic nature of humanist ideas and their rhetorical focus. From this I draw a slightly different picture of the humanist heritage and its polemics with Augustine, and from these an understanding about Stoic agency and how it is inherited and shaped in Machiavelli’s conception of the citizen and civic duties.

Miles, Geoffrey. "Untir'd spirits and formal constancy : Shakespeare's Roman plays and formal constancy." Thesis, University of Oxford, 1987. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:c5830cc5-e1a4-4efa-ae40-98dc4d7eb651.

Full text
Abstract:
Critics who have noted the importance of Stoic constancy in Shakespeare 's Roman plays have failed to recognise the full complexity of the idea. It has two forms, both derived from the Stoic principle of homologia (consistency), and centred on the ideal of being always the same: Seneca's constantia sapientis, the rocklike or godlike virtue of the Stoic sage who is unmoved and unchanged by external circumstances; and Cicero's decorum (De officiis I), virtue as the consistent playing of an appropriate part. Seneca is more concerned with heroic self-sufficiency, Cicero with social virtue, but both forms of the ideal contain a tension between concern for inner truth and external appearances. In the late sixteenth century Stoic constancy becomes a subject of fierce debate as it is revived by the Neostoics, who stress the opposition of constancy and "opinion." Shakespeare's view of this debate may derive particularly from Montaigne, who moves from a Neostoic position to a sceptical critique of constancy as unattainable by inconstant man, and as less desirable than self-knowledge and flexibility. Reading North's Plutarch with these themes in mind, Shakespeare sees in the lives of Brutus, Antony, and Coriolanus an Aristotelian pattern of ideal, defective, and excessive constancy - a pattern which he modifies, in the light of his understanding of Seneca, Cicero, and Montaigne, in the three Roman plays. He explores the tension which exists between the Senecan and Ciceronian forms of constancy, and indeed within each of them: a tension between heroic Stoic virtue ("untir'd spirits") and public role-playing ("forrral constancy"). Julius Caesar shows Roman constancy as essentially "formal," resting on pretence and self-deception; in Rome, ironically, constancy depends on "opinion." Coriolanus, by taking constancy to an extreme, demonstrates the self-destructive contradictions within it. Antony and Cleopatra, by contrast, embrace a Montaigne-like ideal of "infinite variety" and inconsistent decorum; Antony fails, but Cleopatra achieves in death a paradoxical fusion of constancy and mutability.

Abstract: The concepts of sapientia and uirtus in Seneca (4 b.C. ¿ 65 a. C.) permeates a great part of his works, seeing that, sometimes, they are strongly linked: it seems to be difficult to think about an assumed relation of subordination between the subjects of wisdom and virtue in themselves; nevertheless, the form both get conjugated in this author¿s works incites us to question if the man¿s final goal is virtue through wisdom or wisdom through virtue. The stoic philosophy is well known by the fact of subjudging the logic and even physics to ethics: as Seneca himself proclaims, it would be useless if it could not be used in daily life. And, precisely on its ambit, these categories are developed on the author¿s writings. Therefore, at first sight, it tends to consider that, for the philosopher, wisdom would be subordinated to virtue. Our research was divided into three steps: selection and translation of Seneca¿s epistles that expose his conceivings about the two concepts; elaboration of explicative notes and an introductory study about the relation between being a wise man and the virtue, in a context where the philosopher inserts himself

Abstract:
Luke's record of Paul in Athens is among the most interesting and widely studied topics in the life of the Apostle Paul. Luke recorded that Paul taught in the Athenian marketplace, where he was asked to present his doctrines before the Areopagus. Many have commented on the controversial aspects of Paul's speech before the council as recounted by Luke. Much of this scholarly commentary has been centered on the speech itself and the historical authenticity of the account. The purpose of this thesis is to reexamine the context and the setting of the speech as recorded by Luke in the biblical text. By reexamining the context of the speech, this thesis will help clarify Paul's purpose in engaging in philosophical dialogue with his audience while omitting the profound Christocentric doctrines as found in the Pauline Epistles. This thesis argues that an understanding of the setting and the audience played a pivotal role in the content of the Areopagus speech. Paul's audience was very different than the one he was writing to in his Epistles; therefore, the speech matches the setting and the audience. This thesis demonstrates the significance of the audience by examining Paul's education before his conversion to Christianity, whether Paul was taken before the Areopagus on trial, what the functions of the Areopagus were over its history, where Paul was taken to explain his doctrine, and what role the audience played in how and what Paul taught on that occasion.

Abstract: This thesis gives continuity to previous research on the Stoic notions of "harmony" and "agreement" in the prose works of the Roman philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4 BCE -65 CE). As observed in my studies at Masters' level, the idea in question is employed by Seneca in different manners and, in addition, it has its peculiarities presented and developed in several facies by the philosopher. In the current research I have focused my investigation on De uita beata ("On the happy life"), and I have conducted an analysis on the presence and function that different notions of "harmony "and "agreement" have in the text. To that purpose I present a complete translation of the work, accompanied by explanatory footnotes and by an inquiry of the manuscript tradition of the text. Regarding the idea under scrutiny, I have attempted careful examination of the notions of "agreement" in the Stoic school, as well as of the theoretical premises they relate to, and I have presented the results thereof in the form of a broad systematization of that concept, especially in its relation to Seneca's De uita beata. After such considerations I have performed a detailed analysis of two passages of De uita beata, in which the presence of references and allusions to some sort of Stoic "harmony" is more evident. The analysis has concluded that, at least in these excerpts, one may observe densely philosophical discourse, something manifest after close attention to certain stylistic elements found in it, as well as the identification of allusions and references that Seneca makes to particularities of that Stoic notion. In general -be it in the translation, in the theoretical investigation, or in the analysis of selected passages -,I have attempted, during the entirety of the research, to highlight and attend to the link between philosophy and rhetoric observable in Seneca

Abstract: This dissertation aimed at ascertaining which aspects found during the republican time period in Rome - for instance glory, freedom, fame, among others - are evident within Sêneca's work (4 BC - 65 AD). It was observed that the way this philosopher goes about building these notions is different from that of Cícero (106 - 43 a.C). One may firmly state that Sêneca "interiorizes" concepts that had been, prior to the Empire, restricted to social and political contexts. To Stoicism, the most important thing is the moral life of human beings, and it is within this field of action that Sêneca's writings are developed. This investigation intends to show the way Sêneca deals with these Roman concepts by showing, in an original way, the equivalent Greek notions. In his work, notably in Epistulae morales ad Lucilium and in some Dialoghi - such as De breuitate uitae and De tranquillitate animi - the philosopher makes use of linguistic instruments such as lexical and morphosyntactic ones (the latter being used more frequently) to refer to interiority. Within Sêneca's work, the process of interiorization involves not only linguistic but also imagery resources. Our goal, in the present study, sought to expose these resources as they emerged along with the concepts we work with

Farago, Stephen Glen. "An investigation of the impact of an international listing on a firm's share price." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/27696.

Full text
Abstract:
The internationalization of world equity markets is frequently discussed in the financial press. One of the most significant trends in this internationalization is the growth in the number of firms listing their shares on a foreign stock exchange. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the impact of multiple listing on a firm's share price. A review of the popular financial press suggested many reasons for listing internationally. These explanations included; a perquisite argument added attention from security analysts, market segmentation, increasing the market value of the firm, decreasing financing costs, different securities laws and trading practices, increased demand for the shares, and externalities such as increased name recognition in foreign markets. An event study methodology was employed to analyse the reaction of the share price to the announcement and the actual listing of the shares. Three samples were selected for this study using daily data. These were Canadian firms listing on American exchanges, North American firms listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and American firms listing on the London (International) Stock Exchange. A related study has analysed stock price reactions associated with moving from the Over-The-Counter Market to the New York Stock Exchange [Sanger and McConnell 1987]. These studies had found that there is a significant run up in price after the announcement of the listing. They also found that after the listing there was a statistically significant decline in price. Howe and Kelm [1987] have recently used the same methodology to test the multiple listing effect on smaller European exchanges. They found a negative return prior to and after listing. The three samples in this paper all earned statistically significant positive returns in the ten days prior to the listing. However, the run up in the Canadian sample seemed to depend on whether the firm listed on the NYSE or the ASE. The NYSE firms had a far more significant run up. The experience after the listing is also more similar to the American findings which have found a significant decline after listing. The Japanese sample loses almost all of its gains in the four weeks following listing, while the UK sample suffers a smaller but still significant decrease. Finally, the result for the American sample seems to depend on the market portfolio used. Using a Canadian market index, share prices decline after listing while we do not observe significant negative post-listing returns using an American market index. The net result then over the entire period then appears to be statistically insignificant. No clear signal is provided by the market as to whether the new listing is viewed positively. Yet the result is interesting when compared to both the McConnell and Sanger, and the Howe and Kelm papers.

Abstract:
This study demonstrates that financial analysts significantly affect short-term stock prices, by examining how non-accounting information particularly contained in analysts' forecasts contributes to the fluctuation of future stock returns. If current non-accounting information of future earnings is more unfavourable or more volatile, we could observe a larger shift in the current stock return. The empirical evidence strongly supports these theoretical predictions that stem from the combination of the accounting version of Campbell-Shiller model (Campbell and Shiller (1988) and Vuolteenaho (2002)) and Ohlson????s information dynamics (1995). In addition, the results are also valid for measures of both systematic and idiosyncratic volatilities.

Abstract:
This thesis contributes to our knowledge of the behaviour of the Chinese stock market by offering an empirical investigation into issues such as market segmentation, inter‐relationships between Chinese stock markets and inter‐relationships with foreign stock markets. Basic questions which have been typically analysed for developed stock markets are considered in this thesis. These include an analysis of core concepts such as volatility; causal links with economic variables and the reasons why the theoretical stock price may be different from the actual stock price. Methodological methods include; cointegration, generalised autoregressive heteroscedastic modelling (GARCH), vector autoregressive framework modelling (VAR) and panel data analysis. Both daily and monthly observations are used over a time period from 1996 to 2006. The results indicate that there is a rich set of reasons why we may observe phenomena such as a discount on B shares and a relationship between A shares and B shares. The findings also suggest that China is not isolated from the rest of the world and that there is evidence of inter‐relationships with foreign stock markets and that Chinese stock market prices are close to their fundamental value. This is not generally the finding for developed stock markets. Overall, it appears that the methodological approaches usually associated with developed stock markets can serve us well as useful tools in creating a deeper understanding of the underlying fundamentals describing the Chinese stock market.

Abstract:
Modelling and forecasting the stock market remains a challenge because of the high volatilities in individual stock prices and the market itself. Hence, this topic has received much attention in the literature since forecast errors represent the systematic risk faced by investors. Therefore, the ability to reliably forecast the future values of the shares would provide essential help in reducing that risk to those investors. The main aim of this research is to develop and calibrate a framework that can be used to model the daily share prices of the companies from the banking sector and hence produce informative and reliable one step-ahead forecasts using an adaptive BPNN. To this end, a novel forecasting algorithm is proposed. This algorithm proposes six steps that, when followed, possibly will lead to obtaining superior forecasting models for the share prices from the banking sector. In addition, novel technical indicators, and further information reflecting market knowledge were developed in this research so as to improve the modelling and forecasting share prices for the banking sector, alongside a novel application of the correctly identified turning points which provided an accurate assessment of the performance of the forecasting models. Furthermore, a selection of a set of inputs that are salient to financial data was identified. The research was to inform and improve share price forecasts of the banking sector. The historic open share prices for HSBC, Lloyds TSB, RBS and Barclays were used as case studies and the results give evidence to conclude that useable forecasting models can be obtained by employing the developed framework to the share prices from the banking sector in terms of the correctly identified turning points and the direction of the shares which are achieved more than 70% of the time. The empirical results show that using the market knowledge as input generally improved the modelling and forecasting of the share prices from the banking sector.
