Abstract:
“The Star of David and the Stars Outside: The Poetics and Semiotics of Jewish Folklore and of Zionism” written in memory of Dov Noy by his disciple and successor, proposes the perspectives of folklore studies and semiotics as the basis for a critical reading of Gershom Scholem’s essay “Magen David”. The author of the present article reviews the various subsequent versions of Scholem’s essay that was first published in 1947 in Hebrew in an annual literary supplement of the daily Haaretz. The essay stated Scholem’s harsh criticism against the adoption of the Star of David as a Jewish national symbol by Zionist cultural and political institutions. Earlier scholarship has shown how “Magen David” digressed from the usual topics at the focus of Scholem’s magisterial oeuvre, especially the texts of Jewish mysticism interpreted in the light of the phenomenology of religion and historical philology. The present author suggests that the methodological tools that Scholem had honed for reading historical texts on mysticism may not have the same pertinence for analyzing the historical evolvement and transformations of a symbol like the Star of David that has often appeared in contexts of everyday life, magic customs and visual culture. Scholem’s strong rejection of the holistic picture of Jewish folk religion including mystical, magical and poetic expressions, isolating mysticism from all these as a separate, philosophical discourse and phenomenon, did not enable him to see the strong identification of Jews who practiced those more concrete forms of Jewish life sometimes using the symbol of Magen David. Scholem’s choice to publish this essay in Hebrew and in a literary organ, is here interpreted as his attempt to take part in the shaping of Zionist poetical discourse. The relevance of the symbol that he chose for participating in the poetics of the era is demonstrated by an analysis of the focus on stars in the poetry of two dominant poets of Hebrew Zionist culture who were both active in the years before and after the publication of Scholem’s “Magen David” essay, Natan Alterman and Haim Gouri.

Abstract:

I was just thinking about the perfect strangeness of his performance, his separation from gravity and from what is temporal, his saturated colors, his plastic shape-shifting identity, and his insistence on and intentionality around theatricality. And his dances: the abstraction and the symbol. I have an enduring image in my mind from an early album of his fingers specifically molded in an asymmetric shape to express messages from somewhere we don't know, have never been. His last dance, a solo in the middle of Black Star, so eerie, so loose-limbed. I was thinking of his pure, pitch-perfect spectacle, and the embodiment of spectacle through elaborate makeup and costume, with a gender fluidity that freed us all.

Abstract:
Topological indices are numerical parameters of a graph that characterize its molecular topology and are usually graph invariant. In a QSAR/QSPR study, the physico-chemical properties and topological indices such as the Randić, atom–bond connectivity (ABC), and geometric–arithmetic (GA) indices are used to predict the bioactivity of chemical compounds. Graph theory has found a considerable use in this important area of research. All of the studied interconnection networks in this paper are constructed by the Star of David network. In this paper, we study the general Randić, first Zagreb, ABC, GA, ABC4 and GA5, indices for the first, second, and third types of dominating David derived networks and give closed formulas of these indices for these networks. These results are useful in network science to understand the underlying topologies of these networks.

Abstract:
Sporting celebrities are not regularly discussed within the broader realms of sociological debate. Yet that is not to say that their identities cannot offer insight into wider patterns of cultural change. Indeed, it is our contention within this paper that the reverse is true: that analyses of the autobiographical details of contemporary sports figures represent key sites through which cultural change can be viewed. To this end, we take one sporting icon of the present time, soccer star David Beckham, and assess his popular cultural image in terms of its contribution to debates surrounding identity, consumption, and the social construction of masculinities. Our central thesis is that while Beckham affords all the hallmarks of celebrity status, his identity remains both fluid and negotiable in accordance with the role and audience he seeks to address and the ends he seeks to achieve.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article explores aspects of Rosenzweig’s Star of Redemption from the perspective of systems theory. Mosès, Pollock, and others have noted the systematic character of the Star. While “systematic” does not mean “systems theoretic,” the philosophical theology of the Star encompasses ideas that are salient in systems theory. The Magen David star to which the title refers, and which deeply structures Rosenzweig’s thought, fits the classic definition of “system” – a set of elements (God, World, Human) and relations between the elements (Creation, Revelation, Redemption). The Yes and No of the elements and their reversals illustrate the bridging of element and relation with the third category of “attribute,” a notion also central to the definition of “system.” In the diachronics of “the All,” the relations actualize what is only potential in the elements in their primordial state and thus remedy the incompleteness of these elements, fusing them into an integrated whole. Incompleteness is a major theme of systems theory, which also explicitly examines the relations between wholes and parts and offers a formal framework for expressing such fusions. In this article, the systems character of Parts I & II of the Star is explored through extensive use of diagrams; a systems exploration of Part III is left for future work. Remarkably, given its highly architectonic character, diagrams are absent in Rosenzweig’s book, except for the triangle of elements, the triangle of relations, and the hexadic star, which are presented on the opening page of each part of the book. While structures can be explicated entirely in words, diagrams are a visual medium of communication that supplements words and supports a nonverbal understanding that structures both thought and experience.

Abstract:
Scholars have been quick to dismiss Georgian tragedy as mere rant and have thus failed to examine why tragic plays were regularly staged in the eighteenth century. This essay explores the “unaccountable pleasure,” in David Hume's words, that spectators of the genre experienced. Hume compared the feeling of witnessing a tragedy to the sweet misery of watching high-stakes gamblers risk their fortunes. Part of the attraction derived from star actresses who performed the mixed genre of tragedy topped off with a comic epilogue in plays such as Edward Moore's The Gamester, George Lillo's The London Merchant, and David Garrick's The Fatal Marriage. This essay argues that eighteenth-century tragedies portray the struggles of a genre caught between a world ruled by poetic justice and one flung about by uncontrollable economic powers. Further, in its democratization of grievable subjects and its metatheatrical relation to the tragic, Georgian tragedy anticipates modern developments of the genre.

Ages for the dominant stellar component were derived by de-reddening each pixel along an R = 3.3 reddening law to its intercept with a theoretical cluster evolution track in the U-B, B-V plane (Davis 1979). The HII regions of Hodge and Kennicutt (1983) were used as tracers for the most recent star formation.

Many teacher are excited about the potential uses of Logo with elementary school students. The language give students access to mathematical topic they have not previouly explored. The following activitie uae Logo in the study of geometry, number theory, and problem solving. The activities assume that tudents are familiar with turtlegraphic commands (FORWARD, BACK, RIGHT, LEFT) and know how to define procedures. The activitie are designed for students in the upper elementary and middle school grades. The star procedure and explorations are adapted from Discovering Apple Logo by David Thornburg. The book contains excellent ideas for the use of Logo as a tool for mathematical explorations. See the Bibliography for additional resources.

Hain, Milan. "Multiple authorship in Anna Karenina (1935): Adapting Tolstoy’s literary classic in the Hollywood studio era." Journal of Adaptation in Film & Performance 13, no. 3 (December 1, 2020): 203–22. http://dx.doi.org/10.1386/jafp_00028_1.

Abstract:
Among the numerous film adaptations of Anna Karenina, the 1935 version produced by David O. Selznick for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer remains one of the most acclaimed and celebrated – undoubtedly owing to its high production values and the performance and ‘star presence’ of the legendary Greta Garbo. However, the film has also been criticized for distorting and simplifying Tolstoy’s literary classic. In this article, I focus on the process of transposing Anna Karenina into the Hollywood screen version, locating causes of the adaptation process in extra-textual factors. Specifically, I address the economic and industry discourse represented by the MGM studio and its house style; the censorship discourse represented by the Production Code Administration, Hollywood’s self-regulatory body headed by Joseph Breen; and the star discourse represented by Garbo. In the process, I identify and describe the industrial, economic and cultural determinants which brought about MGM’s version of Anna Karenina. At the same time, by perceiving Selznick, Breen and Garbo as co-authors of the film, I redefine and complicate the issue of authorship.

Full text
Abstract:
The empirical temperatures scale for cool stars is generally well established. Temperatures are now known with reasonable precision for stars covering the range of spectral types from A to M. In the historical paper by Code, Davis, Bless and Hanbury Brown (Code et al. 1976), six stars between 10000K and 6500K had radii measured by the intensity interferometer and these six, together with the sun formed the basis of the empirical temperature calibration at the time. Since then, many temperatures have been derived for A-K stars (Blackwell & Lynas-Gray 1994; Alonso et al. 1996a) using the Infra-Red Flux Method (see Megessier 1994,5 and this volume), while lunar occultations (Ridgway et al. 1980) and more recently Michelson interferometry (Di Benedetto & Rabbia 1987; Dyck et al. 1996), have been used to measure the radii of K and M giants. It is a tribute to Hanbury Brown's Intensity Interferometer that temperature scales based on its measurements are essentially unchanged by the new data.

Abstract:
The Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Poland had several phases. First, Jews were marked with the Star of David badge, then isolated in ghettos, and—at the end—they were murdered in the extermination camps. But thousands of Jews had managed to escape both from ghettos and from camps. Often they were jumping from the trains going to Treblinka, or—after surviving a shooting—escaping from a mass grave. All of them wanted to survive the war. Some tried to stay in the cities; others were looking for help in the countryside. The article is about those Jews who wanted to live through the war among Polish peasants but were betrayed, denounced to the Germans, or murdered.

Abstract:
In 1938, Lou Gehrig, an American baseball star, discovered he had a rare neuromuscular disease that progressively made him weaker until he was completely paralysed. He died 3 years later. Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or motor neuron disease (MND) affects one in 50000 people. Stephen Hawking has it and David Niven died from it. The causes of this fatal disease are still unknown and no cure exists, just a few drugs to relieve symptoms; however, intensive research is being carried out to find a cure. In fact, more research has been performed on this rare disease in the past 5 years than has been carried out in the previous 150 years, and new potential treatments are being discovered regularly.
