Full textThe manosphere is a collection of antifeminist men's groups. They are united by their enthusiasm for Darwinian evolution, especially around issues of sex differences. This research examines U.S. and English-speaking manosphere appropriations of evolutionary science from three angles. Firstly, it assesses the scientific literacy of manospherians with a survey, revealing relatively high levels of college science education and scientific literacy. Secondly, through qualitative discourse analysis, it thoroughly reviews the appropriations of evolutionary science found in the manosphere. Overall, manospherians tend to disproportionately apply biological theories to women, making for a uniform and strongly deterministic view of female behavior. Moreover, they also create their own evolutionary hypotheses to make sense of the world through a Darwinian lens. Yet, appropriations of evolutionary science vary between manosphere communities, depending on their political aims and narratives. Running through all these appropriations however is a presence of misogynistic biases, as well as exaggeration and simplification of academic research results. To understand this phenomenon better, this work finally explores scientific knowledge circulation and acquisition in the manosphere

The emergency contraceptive pill (EC) is a method of the emergency contraception that prevents pregnancy after sexual intercourse. It is also known as the âpost coital pillâ and contains high dose progestin-hormone. The EC can be taken immediately or up to five days after sex if the woman did not use birth control, in cases of suspected birth control failure, or if she was forced to have sex. To describe the level of knowledge and use of EC by users of the Medicine Attendance Service (SAC FARMA) in a network of community pharmacies placed in Fortaleza, CearÃ. In the months October (2008) to May (2009), after each enquiry about the âpost coital pillâ, women who were using or intended to use this pill were invited to participate in a survey on the use of emergency contraception by the application of a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed with the statistical program SPSS, version 15.0. Of the 54 women interviewed, the majority were aged between 23 and 29 years (44.4%), were single (66.7%) and resident in the State of Cearà (66.7%). (48.1%) had income between 1 and 3 minimum wages, 50,0% higher secondary education and 42.6% had higher education.). Almost all (92,6%) wished to use or have used EC without guidance/prescription and of these the majority (54%) obtained some information about EC through friends and family. More than half (64.8%) said it was not their first time of use, and 82% reported using EC once or twice previously. With respect to knowledge about the risk of loss of effectiveness if the use is repetitive, the majority (64%) were unaware of this information. Most (72%) reported no adverse reaction or other complaints. Also, 98.1% of interviewed reported that they knew other method of contraception, being the condom the most widely known (92.6%) and used (84%). One of the main reasons to justify the use of EC was unprotected sex (53.7%). When asked for how long after intercourse the method can be used, most answered within 72 hours (56.3%), 25% did not respond and 65.6% reported that "post coital pill" has no abortive effect. Most of the women studied wanted to use the EC without prescription and obtained information about EC pill from friends and family. Moreover most women had no knowledge about the risk of reduced effectiveness if the use is repetitive. These findings are of concern as they indicate the possibility of misuse of the EC given its easy access in pharmacies.

Full textThis thesis constitutes a contribution by a systemic approach to find ways of fuel cell systems integration to form simple, effective and reliable electro generators. Indeed, the study proposes a development methodology of control and on-line energy management of hybrid systems having a fuel cell as main source and as element of storage of supercondensers. The first phase of the study tried to represent and to characterize the electric behaviour, at once static and dynamic of the fuel cell generator under variable and varied requests. This allowed to justify the use of an assistance to palliate the fuel cell generator limits. The introduction of an intermediate storage organ can be so realized by a significant number of different architectures, the analysis of their electric behaviour led to the choice of the study structures. By leaning on this choice, the second stage brought to build command algorithms and energy management. Two methods were used. The first one founded on the macroscopic energy representation REM. She allowed to highlight the explicit and implicit freedom degrees of both structures. The regulation chains identification acting on the objectives and the constraints of 2 systems facilitated the development of command structures based on the inversion rules REM. Also passivity based control was envisaged for the stability guarantees which it brings intrinsically. Through a different algorithm, the same flexibility of regulation was able to be assured. Besides, a management strategy of saturations and limits of the system was set up, to pilot the extreme functionings. An important part of the work has consisted in setting up a test bench - representative of considered hybrid fuel cell system. Thanks to this experimental means, allowed to test the various architectures of the system, but also fuel cell model and control laws developed during the thesis have been validated

Abstract: Concern for the environment has stimulated interest in research for sustainable development. The present work aimed investigated the reuse of red ceramic waste (RCW) in the concrete composition, replacing in weight to fine aggregate (sand) and proposing his application in cast-in-place piles foundations. Were made compositions with 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of sand by RCW replacement. Compressive strength tests and modulus of elasticity were performed for all compositions of hardened concrete. Testing of air entraining and density were also made in the concrete in its fresh state. In order to evaluate his behavior under field conditions, on work load situation, three foundation piles were made, which were submitted the quick load test. The piles were made with 20.0 cm diameter and 4.50 m length using concrete with 40% replacement. The results obtained were compared with others load test carried at the same place, however with conventional concrete piles. It was concluded that reuse of RCW improved the physical characteristics and mechanics of concrete and its possible application in the piles foundation in study.

Full textFollowing a stem cell or solid organ transplant immunosuppressed patients have an increased risk of developing opportunistic infections such as invasive aspergillosis (IA), which is mainly caused by the most prevalent airborne mold, Aspergillus fumigatus. The diagnosis and therapy of IA have become increasingly relevant in recent years, making it essential to understand the mechanisms of the immune system. The infection generally spreads from the lung. Dendritic cells (DCs), whose major task is to activate T-lymphocytes, were therefore investigated for their ability to influence the immune system. 40-0-[2-Hydroxy-ethyl]rapamycin (RAD), a novel immunosuppressive drug, was analysed for its in vitro influence on the interaction of neutrophils and monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) with the pathogenic mould, A. fumigatus. RAD acts by bonding with the cytosolic FK506 binding protein (FKBP12) causing inhibition of the lipid kinase mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) which in turn results in the repression of T-cell activation. It is clinically used to prevent graft-versus-host disease or the rejection of solid organ and bone marrow transplants. RAD-treatment significantly decreased the oxidative burst of neutrophils after confrontation with A. fumigatus. moDCs were derived from monocytes through culture with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and interleukin-4 in the presence or absence of 10 nM RAD. Although there was no difference in the expression of the surface markers CD1a+, CD14- and HLA-DR+, RAD had various modulating effects on the immune function of moDCs. It reduced the expression of innate immunity receptors (TLR4 and dectin-1) and impaired the maturation capacity of moDCs as was observed in the reduction of co-stimulatory factors (CD40, CD83 and CD86). CD40 remained significantly reduced even after treatment with A. fumigatus, while CD83 only exhibit a downstream trend and CD86 did not stay reduced. RAD treatment significantly reduced the cytokine expression levels of IL-12, TNF-α, and CCL20 after 6 h stimulation of the moDCs with the mold. This was to some extent confirmed at protein level, where the same cytokines as well as IL-10 were significantly reduced in RAD-treated moDCs by comparison with reference cells after 12 h of stimulation with A. fumigatus. The phagocytosis and binding rate of dextran beads and conidia as well as the damage to A. fumigatus germ tubes were significantly reduced in DCs treated with the agent. It cannot be determined for certain whether moDCs under RAD-treatment were also less able to activate CD8+-Tlymphocytes because of the wide donor related discrepancies that they displayed. A home-made RNA microarray, which included genes coding for cytokines and receptors of immune cells, was used to identify several differentially regulated genes after confrontation with A. fumigatus. Furthermore, a comparison between monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) and myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) was performed, revealing that only a few genes were regulated more than 2-fold and that fewer of these genes occured in mDCs than in moDCs. Among them were genes, such as the cytokines IL-1β, IL-8, CXCL2, CCL3, CCL4 and CCL20, the immune receptor PTX3 and the transcription factor Nf-κB. Finally, it was investigated whether the knock-down of the CXCL10-gene in moDCs potentially impaired the response of the immune cells to A. fumigatus. It is proven that the lack of CXCL10 results in a higher risk of IA. However, there was no difference in the cytokine production or the expression of co-stimulatory factors in control moDCs compared to moDCs treated with CXCL10 siRNA. In conclusion, important genes which had been up-regulated after confrontation with A. fumigatus in moDCs and mDCs, were successfully identified. Moreover, treatment with RAD during the generation of moDCs had a considerable effect on the ability of these cells to kill A. fumigatus and modulate the immune response. RAD treatment could thus increase the patient's risk of contracting invasive aspergillosis regardless of the drug's capacity to inhibit T-cell activation
