Abstract:
Abstract Bombus simillimus SMITH is a west Himalayan species, known only from Pakistan and India. In the Indian Himalaya this species is restricted to Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. So far, it has never been recorded from other regions. Its females (workers) can be recognized by the chocolate brown pubescence of the metasomal terga 1 and 2. The colour pattern of the queen is very distinct, with the whole body coloured black except for the last two metasomal terga, which are brick-red. In Kashmir Himalaya it is widespread around the lower mountain coniferous forest and was found foraging heavily on Trifolium pratense, Lavatera cashmeriana, Carduus spp. and Cirsium spp. Being very common and having a very wide distributional range, it is associated with a sizeable number of host plants. Due emphasis has been laid on its detailed taxonomic descriptions, synonymy, host plants, distribution pattern and illustration. Thirty-five food plants of this species have been recorded from the study areas.

Abstract:
A 4-year-old, late-term pregnant Himalayan queen was diagnosed with biventricular congestive heart failure characterized by pleural effusion and pulmonary edema. A cesarean section was performed, resulting in the birth of four live kittens, with one surviving to discharge. Congestive heart failure resolved rapidly following surgery. The queen remained asymptomatic for 9 years postoperatively. Volume expansion secondary to pregnancy was thought to result in cardiovascular volume overload and subsequent congestive heart failure.

Abstract:
Four commonly occurring species of queen ants were collected after their nuptial flight from an agroecosystem in Lehri Sarail village of Himachal Pradesh (31°32’03.9”N 76°38’57.7“E) using light traps. Queens named HAC1, HAC2, HAC3, and HAC4 were placed individually in a test tube with water sources. Once the queen started laying eggs, and a few workers emerged, they were transferred to an artificial formicarium. HAC1 and HAC2 were identified as Camponotus compressus, while HAC3 and HAC4 were identified as Polyrhachis thompsoni and Pheidole minor, respectively. In the study period of one year between July 2020 and July 2021, offspring from all colonies were found to be workers. HAC1, HAC2, and HAC4 produced dimorphic workers, the majors and minors. Studies on colony establishment, biology, and behavior were carried out with colonies from HAC1, HAC2, and HAC3, while a colony from HAC4 failed to establish. All species showed similar types of colony founding, nesting, brood management, necrophorosis, and hibernation. C. compressus showed higher fecundity, while percent hatchability was higher in P. thompsoni. Percent pupation and adult emergence were higher in C. compressus and lower in P. thompsoni. P. thompsoni was observed to be more aggressive with a high predation rate, followed by C. compressus. P. minor showed aggressiveness initially but was unable to incapacitate the host larva. Understanding ant biodiversity, biology, behavior, predatory potential, etc., will allow us to use the native ants in the agroecosystem as biological control agents. Methods of rearing ants under the artificial setup described here enable laboratory culturing of ants with biocontrol potential and using ants as model organisms to study the bio-efficacy of agrochemicals and pharmaceutical drugs.

Abstract:
The species diversity of bumblebees was investigated in three provinces Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh during 2007-2010. Bumblebee queens, workers and males were collected right from the commencement till to the end of flowering stage in all the three mountain regions. In total, 27 species of bumblebees were collected and identified, of which eleven species were common in the two regions, e.g., Kashmir and Ladakh. A list of species assemblages and abundance is provided in each of the mountain ranges. Species diversity of three regions was determined with Shannon-Weiner diversity index and evenness was calculated with indices of Pielou. The obtained results showed species diversity; evenness and species richness were more observable in Kashmir compared with Ladakh and Jammu. The three sample sites within the Kashmir Himalayas indicate significant differences in species diversity; the Kashmir region had higher species diversity and richness than the other regions. Most species of bumblebees were collected in altitudinal ranges of 3000-4000m. Four species viz. Bombus cornutus, B. parthenius, B. miniatus and B. morawitizianus are recorded for the first time from this region, while B. morawitizianus turn out to be the first record to the national list.Key words: Species Diversity; Bumblebees; Kashmir Himalayas.© 2012 JSR Publications. Abstract:
ABSTRACT Bombus rufofasciatus SMITH is a Tibetan species, widely distributed in the Oriental region. It is a medium tongued species abundant in both the north-east and north-west Indian Himalaya, covering an altitude range from 2400 to 4200 m. Because of its abundance and very wide distribution, it is associated with a sizeable number of host plants. Males and workers are similar in colour pattern, but the queen is a little different. The species shows a preference for highaltitude mountain slopes and is found in abundance in the open meadows of Affarwatt, Sheeshnag, Daksum, the Razdan Pass and the Lahul-spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh in the north-western Himalaya. For preference it forages on Aconitum spp. (Ranunculaceae), Trifolium spp. (Papilionaceae), Cirsium spp. (Asteraceae) and certain members of Lamiaceae. Due emphasis has been laid on its detailed taxonomic descriptions, synonymy, host plants, pollination ecology, distribution pattern and illustrations. 51 food plants of this species have been recorded for the first time from the areas under study.

Abstract:
AbstractIn ‘The Rani of Sirmur: An Essay in Reading the Archives’, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak offered a literary analysis of British records to demonstrate the inextricability of language from the colonial/imperial project's goal of world domination. Honing her arguments on the threat of a Himalayan queen (rani) to ‘become sati’ (i.e. immolate herself), Spivak interpreted the event as representative of the plight of subalterns and of ‘third world women’ in particular. However, a close reading of the records reveals profound discrepancies between Spivak's interpretation and conditions that existed in and around the kingdom at the time. This article contextualizes the rani's story by supplementing archival sources with folk traditions, local histories, and recent research on sati and Rajput women. It shows that the rani was actually an astute ruler, similar to her peers in the West Himalayan elite, and that her threat of suicide resulted from reasons that go beyond an alleged attempt at recovering agency from the dual oppressions of patriarchal indignity and an invasive superpower. The discourses about sati in contemporary texts are also investigated, revealing a considerable overlap in South Asian and European views of sati among Himalayan elites in turn-of-the-nineteenth-century northwest India.

Abstract:
The felicitous tourist destination “Hills Queen” and the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, an enticing state in the Himalayan region, are met with water crisis every year and jaundice outbreaks occasionally. In 2016, there was a severe jaundice outbreak in Shimla city. In a contemporaneous investigation, we attempted to trace out the possible reason for these crises in Shimla. Samples were collected month wise from different water-supply sources and their physicochemical and microbial loads were analyzed. The microbiological examination found a totally excessive microbial load (1.064 × 109 cfu/mL on common) throughout the year with a maximum (>1.98 × 1010 cfu/mL) in the wet season and minimum (>3.00 × 107 cfu/mL) in the winter. Biochemical and morphological evaluation confirmed that most of the water resources reported a high number of coliforms and Gram-negative microorganisms due to sewage-water infiltration. These microorganisms in the water are responsible for the liver infection that ultimately causes jaundice. For safe and potable water, infiltration of municipal wastewater must be prevented at any cost. Scientific disposal of wastewater and purification of uncooked water have to be conducted earlier than consumption or use for different domestic functions, to avoid water crises and fetal ailment outbreaks in the near future.

Abstract:
In the present study, high resolution Y-chromosome SNP analyses were employed to investigate the genetic origins of three distinct groups from Nepal namely, the general population of Kathmandu, Newar, and Tamang, as well as a collection from Tibet. The results suggest that the Tibetans and Nepalese are descendants of Tibeto-Burman speaking groups originating in Northeast Asia. With the exception of Tamang, both Newar and Kathmandu exhibit considerable similarities to Indian Y haplogroup substructure. These results suggest recent gene flow from the Indian subcontinent, a conclusion that is also supported by the admixture analysis. In contrast, while YAP+ , a genetic signature of Central Asian origin, is completely absent in Nepal, it accounts for more than fifty percent of Tibetan Y-chromosome. Low frequencies of haplogroup R lineages in Tibet reflect limited gene flow from India most likely due to the Himalayan mountain range to the south.

Abstract:
As seen from india, the himalayas are a wall. It is a low human density area, because of the hard environmental conditions (altitude), and also an economic periphery. But the himalayan highlands are also the core of tibetan life ans territory, that is a disputed area between india and china, and geographically a non-symetrical frontier. The purpose of that research is to study that mountain range as a geographical, a historical and a geopolitical march between two giant states. India and china are considering themselves as inheritors of the history of the territories they actually control and the legacy of former empires is that of their present foreign regional policy. But for india the birth of a modern state has meant a territorial loss from the british frontier system - thow it is preserved in indian strategists mind : disappearance of tibetan frontier and partition of himalayan southern side between india and pakistan. To the opposite, the north side of the range has been the spot of china's expansion by formal integration of tibet into the prc. The basic fact is china's primacy on india's action. Han colonisation of tibet benefits by the chinese economic growth that contribute to settle chinese on long term basis and allow it to reinforce the military framework of exterior china, in an assertion of the country as a regional power. Indian political action is to integrate the british frontier system in the nation-state structure, by creating + himalayan ; administratives entities, but the granting of specific administrative statuses is marginalising upland peoples, since tourism is the only way of economic integration to the rest of the country. Outside, indian government seems to achieve integrating himalayan states, first by political force and now by economic means. But the social cost of that is the growing difficulties of the government to acces their himalayan territoiries on account of an arising ethnical instability

The present project of handbags for women students of universities and institutes and housewives has allowed us to validate the problem assumed based on information gathered in the analysis to the sector to which our product is directed, the NSE "C". In this way, we managed to detect that women belonging to this level did not have the necessary resources to adapt to the changing world of fashion. Currently, the fashion and beauty sector are constantly changing, because there are several designers and brands that year after year launch new products to the market, generating trend and attraction for women around the world. However, there are many categories of products in this sector that present very high prices for people who receive a minimum remuneration or who do not generate monthly income. From this, the different products offered in this sector were analyzed, with the bags being the product chosen for its preparation and sale, because it is very required by women and it is expected that its level of consumption will increase in the following years. Queen Bags will launch to the market a wide catalog of handbags elaborated based on the tastes and preferences of the clients. Likewise, it will stand out for the variety of designs offered, the launching of new catalogs for each station and the quality-price ratio of the final products. The business will start operations in 2019 and for its start-up the shareholders will make a total investment of S/12,719 formed by the purchase of assets and cash contribution.

The competition over the water resources of the Himalayan plateau is shaping the geopolitics of the Asian continent. Economic growth, industrialisation, pollution and growing population have created an unprecedented water-stress on the world’s driest continent. Water shortages have created geopolitical tensions and intensified competition over the resources of the transboundary rivers such as the Ganges, Indus, Brahmaputra and Amu Darya. This research examines the international relations amongst the countries where these rivers flow and the challenges that arise from friction over water resources, taking the Brahmaputra as a case study.

Abstract:

This dissertation discusses how Victorian writers, artists, and critics represent historical queens as shadows of Queen Victoria throughout her long reign (1837–1901). Focusing on Victorian representations of four queens—Catherine de Medici, Mary Stuart, Queen Elizabeth I, and Marie-Antoinette—this project seeks to establish a literary genealogy by showing how British writers drew upon historical interpretations of dead French and English queens to express psychological ambivalence, political anxiety about female monarchy, national, confessional difference, and complex sexual and erotic dimensions. Rather than approach these queens as historical persons, this dissertation concentrates on the literary, figural, and spectral qualities that translate unevenly across cultural, religious and historical lines. The dissertation uses interdisciplinary methods drawn from history, psychoanalysis, and feminism to examine how Victorian writers relate their representational strategies to novels, dramas, visual texts, and historiographies in which the queens are sources of sensation, fascination, English moral exceptionalism, and spectacle. The mix of canonical and non-canonical writers recasts the familiar images of these queens in a new light and brings unfamiliar and long forgotten writers into the discussion. In examining how these cultural texts work against the grain of more canonical texts, the dissertation shows how they have the potential to unsettle what it is thought is known about Victorian attitudes toward female monarchy. Finally, I argue that it matters that Queen Victoria is on the throne because she casts her shadow over these cultural texts while they are being produced and consumed.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the role of precipitation on erosion and landscape formation in the Nepal Himalayas. I investigate all successive steps involved in the erosion process: 1) Starting from the evaluation of precipitation datasets, 2) the transfer of precipitation to river discharge, 3) the mobilization and transport of material out of the mountain range, 4) and finally, erosion constrains over longer time-scales. I show that the dataset derived from the interpolation of rain gauge data performs best in the Himalayas. I demonstrate the importance of an until now unconsidered, major compartment of the Himalayan discharge cycle, which I identify as a fractured basement aquifer, and estimate the snow and ice melt contribution to the Himalayan rivers. Erosion rates calculated from suspended sediment fluxes and cosmogenic nuclide analysis range between 0.1 and 4 mm/yr. The rivers in the Nepal Himalayas are supply limited and the hillslopes as contributing source are transport limited. Last I show that over several thousand years erosion is not related with precipitation, but with relief

Abstract:
Kingship and Polity on the Himalayan Borderland explores the modern transformation of state and society in the Indian Himalaya. Centred on three Rajput led-kingdoms during the transition to British rule (c. 1790-1840) and their interconnected histories, it demonstrates how border making practices engendered a modern reading of ‘tradition’ that informs communal identities to this day. Countering the common depiction of these states as all-male, caste-exclusive entities, it reveals the strong familial base of Rajput polity, wherein women — and regent queens in particular — played a key role alongside numerous non-Rajput groups. Drawing on rich archival records, rarely examined local histories, and nearly two decades of ethnographic research, it offers an alternative to the popular and scholarly discourses that developed with the rise of colonial knowledge. The analysis exposes the cardinal contribution of borderland spaces to the fabrication of group identities. This book will interest historians and anthropologists of South Asia and of the Himalaya, as well as scholars working on postcolonialism, gender, and historiography.
