Abstract:

In 1990, the creation of underground land is created in the National Land Code. The scarcity of land especially in urban areas has pushed the traditional horizontal land development into vertical land development. Apart from transportation purposes, it is suitable for recreational, storage, and service utility purposes. Within this development, it attracts questions such as how to reconcile the right of surface and underground landowners as the law has allowed the ownership of underground land to be independent and separate from the surface owner. In governing the relationship between the surface and the underground landowners, the provision of access, support, and protection are regulated under the express condition in the document of title. This paper explores the concept of the right of support in Malaysia and the requirement for its application. This paper uses the doctrinal method where statutory provisions, cases, legal articles are examined. In discussing this topic, the practice in Singapore and Australia is compared, and it is suggested in regulating the relationship between surface and underground landowners, the creation of easement to be adopted with the compensation to be awarded to the burdened land.

Abstract:

Ensuring the reliability of support in mine workings has always been one of the most important scientific and technical problems in mining. To ensure the normal operation of underground structures, it is necessary to apply special measures to maintain the support, providing increased stability of rock array. To one of the most important measures is to maintain the reliability of the supports in underground workings and objects of underground construction. The main method of research in this area is the modeling of the reliability of concrete support, as applied to various exogenous and endogenous factors of disturbance. The article provides theoretical provisions of research in physico-chemical processes of corrosion in reinforced concrete for modelling the reliability of structural elements of supports for underground construction objects.

Abstract:

Informal settlements are a hot spot for disaster risks worldwide. They are characterised by limited provision of basic services. Water being a critical life support resource is not adequately provided. Residents usually rely on unsafe water sources of hand dug wells. Pit latrines are a major facility for sanitary purposes. Further, informal settlements high population density residing in poor housing units is a common characteristics. Risks of underground water pollution are high due to the proximity of sanitation facilities to unprotected shallow wells increasing the possibility of feacal contamination by ecoli and coli form. This paper presents a case of Makululu informal settlement in Zambia. A total of 385 respondents were identified at random while purposive sampling identified key informants. Water samples collected from 12 hand dug wells located close to pit latrines were tested for coli form and ecoli. Testing was done before and after the rainy season to analyse the relationship between pit latrines and wells as well as the relationship with rainfall distribution pattern to ascertain levels of risks. Water was tested to determine the levels of contamination based on the presence of ecoli and coli form. Laboratory results indicated that 90 percent of water consumed in Makululu informal settlement is highly contaminated by faecal coliforms.

Abstract:

The purpose of the article is to study the process of creation and functioning of the underground Ukrainian Red Cross, its interaction with the local population during the period 1943-1944 in Galicia under the conditions of the Nazi occupation. The methodological basis of the research is the general scientific principles of objectivity, comprehensiveness and historicism. The work uses logical, problem-chronological and comparative methods. Scientific novelty. The article attempts to analyze the structure, territorial division and management structure, and the main directions of activity of this organization within the limits of Galicia, as one separate region. Practical meaning. The study of the activities of this organization is an important element for understanding the principles of the work of the underground Ukrainian Red Cross as a component of the red cross movement on the territory of Galicia in the first half of the twentieth century. Main results and conclusion. The article deals with the activities of the Ukrainian Red Cross in the ranks of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army on the territory of Galicia during the period of the Nazi occupation. The aggregate of factors that influenced the underground activity of the Ukrainian Red Cross was highlighted. In particular, the regional features that caused certain differences in the work of the Red Cross on this territory in comparison with other areas of UIA activity were investigated. The structure, territorial division and management structure of this organization are described within the limits of one separate region – Galicia. The main directions of the work of the Underground Red Cross are considered. The peculiarities of provision of medical care, the organization of hospitals and the problem of the training of medical personnel in the conditions of the underground are analyzed. The main ways of material and technical support of the Ukrainian Red Cross are highlighted. The role of the local population and the medical community of Galicia in providing the Red Cross with medications, medicinal plants and the necessary inventory is revealed. The author of the study concludes that for the activities of the Ukrainian Red Cross during the period 1943-1944 on the territory of Galicia were characterized by their regional features that facilitated or created more favorable conditions for the functioning of this organization. It should be noted separately that the role of the local population in supporting the work of this structure – the provision of medicines, food and money. In general, the author evaluates the activity of UHF in this period as an important stage of the red-circular movement in the territory of Galicia in the first half of the twentieth century. The Underground Red Cross is regarded as an organization that has become the successor of humanitarian communities of the same type that functioned in the specified territory in previous years, in particular the URC department in Lviv, established in June 1941. One of the important factors contributing to the work of this organization was the activity of the medical environment, which manifested itself in promoting the activities of this structure by well-known doctors and graduates of medical higher education institutions. Abstract:

The formation of the modern Ukrainian natural gas market is accompanied by profound transformations of the national gas infrastructure: the creation and operation of new market operators, the redistribution of infrastructure facilities, the development and implementation of new requirements for the effective functioning of the entire system. At the same time, this requires from all parties a verified and balances strategy for the optimal implementation of all the obligations that Ukraine has undertaken to fully implement the requirements of the EU Third Energy Package, which aims to create an effective natural gas market based on the principles of free competition, proper consumer protection and security of supply. Despite the fact that the capacity of the Ukrainian gas transmission system and gas storages is one of the largest in Europe, the unbanding process has caused a number of threats in the area of regulatory support for production activities, requiring the consolidation of specialists' efforts to form optimal solutions to the problems that have arisen. In addition, the lengthy process of reforming and reorganizing the Ukrainian gas distribution system has led to a situation where the work of a natural gas distribution operator is facing a risk of imbalance in terms of inefficient standardization of the main areas of operation to meet the EU legislation requirements implemented in Ukraine. Therefore, to develop basic directions for the future work of gas infrastructure operators, it is necessary to take into account the acting capabilities of existing system for transportation, underground storage and gas distribution (taking into account the significant number of standardized indicators defined by the existing normative documents of the former USSR) and in accordance with the trends in the development of the European gas infrastructure introduce economically and technically feasible measures to standardize performance activities. Such works have to be incorporated into integrated research programs, during which regional and international trends are to be taken into account and adapted, the results of which will be the basis for future roadmaps and programs for the development of natural gas supply and distribution systems.

Abstract:

London Underground Limited (LUL) has awarded GEC ALSTHOM (GECA) a service provision contract to provide and maintain 106 new trains under a leasing agreement for the next 20 years. The service will be provided to the Northern Line, with LUL retaining responsibility for operational control. Maintenance will be performed in the existing Northern Line facilities and the depots will be leased from LUL to GECA for the contract period. The maintenance depots require modernization to support the new trains and GECA Railway Maintenance Services Limited (RML) will manage and operate the depots. RML is now responsible for delivering the existing trains to the Northern Line and for introducing the new fleet of trains while the maintenance facilities are modernized. This paper addresses the modifications made to the maintenance facilities for the new fleet of trains. It discusses the philosophy behind the redesign of the depot layout, the steps throughout construction and the maintenance equipment necessary to provide the service required to meet the needs of the customer.

Abstract:

To accommodate traffic volume on roads due to ever-increasing population growth, the widening of highways and motorways is in high demand. Nevertheless, the widening of tunnels on these road networks is quite complex due to the presence of numerous rock types, in situ stress, and different widening modes. To overcome these complexities, eight different tunnel shapes were simulated under varying support conditions for asymmetric and symmetric widening. It was found that the tunnels with a round shape, such as horseshoe and semicircular with flatbed, are more effective for asymmetric widening, whereas the provision of a rounded invert in these shapes can reverse the widening option to symmetric. Furthermore, an insignificant effect of the difference in asymmetric and symmetric widening of regular tunnel shapes, such as box, rectangular, and semi-elliptical, was found. A full factorial design statistical analysis confirmed the decrease in tunnel deformation by using various tunnel support systems and showed a significant deformation difference according to monitoring locations at the tunnel periphery. The deformation difference in the case of both tunnel widening modes was also analyzed according to different design parameters. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of rock mass behavior when the widening of any underground opening is carried out.

Abstract:

Section one of this thesis considers the impact of culture on the therapeutic relationship. A metasynthesis of client experiences of cross cultural therapy is presented, which generated three themes. The first recognises the assumption of difference in a cross-cultural therapeutic relationship and the assumption that lived experience is qualitatively different from what can be learned by a therapist. The second elaborates the processes by which clients bridge this assumed divide in order to get benefit from therapy, including divorcing problems from the context of their culture. The third explores the emergence of the known variables of therapeutic relationship in this context. Clinical implications and the importance of recognising individual context in therapy is discussed. Section two of this thesis reports an interpretative phenomenological analysis of the experiences of six Islamic scholars in supporting members of the community. Four themes were derived from this analysis 'Building a personal relationship with the ultimate authority'; 'Treating the whole person'; 'God's Medicine'; and 'Duty bound to help'. The implications of these themes for the process of supporting people of Muslim faith are considered and the development of closer relationships with other support providers discussed. The third section of this thesis critically reviews and reflects upon the above research and explores the use of qualitative research as a cultural outsider and the process of developing and carrying out cross cultural research including reflections on the specific process of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis in this research context.

Abstract:

The current study is an evaluation of a voluntary sector service, Victim Support. The focal points of this work are the impact of crime upon victims and the extent to which they feel that Victim Support, as a service provider, has helped to restore their sense of equilibrium. In this way the success of a community response to crime is considered. The research was undertaken between 1998 and 2002 and was largely based upon the work of one local scheme; Victim Support, Plymouth. The study included the views of service users (victims of crime) and those of service providers (paid staff and volunteers). In contrast to earlier studies, my work looks at Victim Support at a much later date in its history, at a time when service provision has become increasingly professionalised and standardised. Furthermore my work examined Victim Support at a time when it is being charged, fairly overtly, with responsibilities alongside other voluntary and state agencies for the governance of crime. At the same time Victim Support is under pressure to provide a service that IS 'community' In nature, whilst meeting the stricter economic imperatives of managerialism. Previous studies do not appear to have considered the value of all types of service provision that Victim Support makes, nor have they directly included victims who, though quite badly affected, were not typically offered assistance. More recent studies of Victim Support have also been undertaken more as a by product of national victim surveys, with only vague references to the contact made with victims, and within which support is offered/provided. The work that I have undertaken seeks to address these gaps in knowledge, making a clear link between the needs of crime victims and the organisational response of Victim Support at the local level.

Abstract:

Child bereavement is associated with a range of negative psychological, academic and long-term outcomes (Parsons, 2011). Many authors argue that schools are well positioned to provide support to bereaved children following their experience of a loss (e.g. Abdelnoor & Hollins, 2004). However, there is little empirical evidence to support this position as there is a significant gap in research exploring Bereavement Support Provision (BSP) in schools. This research adopts a mixed-methods design to explore BSP in primary schools and school staff’s understanding of children’s grief. Participants were primary school staff across 14 primary schools in one London Local Authority. Phase 1 (n=260) consisted of a questionnaire which aimed to examine current BSP practices in schools and understanding of children’s grief. Phase 2 (n=16) consisted of semi-structured interviews that were used to explore perspectives of school staff on their experience of supporting a bereaved child. The findings highlighted that there is no systematic procedure for identifying a bereavement within the school system. BSP is characterised by social and emotional support and other indirect responses, such as a referral to external agencies. Several individual and systemic factors influenced BSP, such as developmental needs, relationships, personal experiences, internal and external communication and support from external agencies. Providing support to a bereaved child had a negative impact on the emotional well-being of staff, which was exacerbated by a lack of systemic support. Support for staff, such as training in bereavement and loss, is needed. Qualitative data revealed that staff have an informed understanding of children’s grief, with personal experience of loss enhancing this understanding. In contrast, exploratory quantitative analysis indicated that training, supporting a child bereaved of a sibling and responding to a child’s loss by a referral to external agencies are significantly associated with understanding children’s grief. The implications these findings have for Educational Psychologists are discussed.

Abstract:

Network virtualization and overlay networks have emerged as powerful tools for improving the flexibility of the Internet. Overlays are used to provide a wide range of useful services in today's networking environment, and they are also viewed as important building blocks for an agile and evolvable future Internet. Regardless of the specific service it provides, an overlay needs assistance in several areas in order to perform properly throughout its existence. This dissertation focuses on the mechanisms underlying the provision of auxiliary support services that perform control and management functions for overlays, such as overlay assignment, resource allocation, overlay monitoring and diagnosis. The priorities and objectives in the design of such mechanisms depend on network conditions and the virtualization environment. We identify opportunities for improvements that can help provide auxiliary services more effectively at different overlay life stages and under varying assumptions. The contributions of this dissertation are the following: 1. An overlay assignment algorithm designed to improve an overlay's diagnosability, which is defined as its property to allow accurate and low-cost fault diagnosis. The main idea is to increase meaningful sharing between overlay links in a controlled manner in order to help localize faults correctly with less effort. 2. A novel definition of bandwidth allocation fairness in the presence of multiple resource sharing overlays, and a routing optimization technique to improve fairness and the satisfaction of overlays. Evaluation analyzes the characteristics of different fair allocation algorithms, and suggests that eliminating bottlenecks via custom routing can be an effective way to improve fairness. 3. An optimization solution to minimize the total cost of monitoring an overlay by determining the optimal mix of overlay and native links to monitor, and an analysis of the effect of topological properties on monitoring cost and the composition of the optimal mix of monitored links. We call our approach multi-layer monitoring and show that it is a flexible approach producing minimal-cost solutions with low errors. 4. A study of virtual network embedding in software defined networks (SDNs), identifying the challenges and opportunities for embedding in the SDN environment, and presenting two VN embedding techniques and their evaluation. One objective is to balance the stress on substrate components, and the other is to minimize the delays between VN controllers and switches. Each technique optimizes embedding for one objective while keeping the other within bounds.

Abstract:

My thesis is that practical language support can be provided for Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) for Application-Service Provision (ASP), which is better than that provided by pre-existing languages in that: it provides greater assistance in expressing conditions that mitigate the risks inherent in ASP; and disputes related to agreements expressed in this manner may be more easily resolved in so as to respect the original intent of the parties. I support this thesis by establishing requirements for SLAs for ASP based on an account of a typical ASP infrastructure and business model. These identify the particular risks inherent in ASP, permit comparisons between ASP SLA languages, and guide the development of an abstract, extensible, domain-specific language, SLAng. SLAng is defined using a meta-modelling approach that allows a high degree of precision in the specification of its semantics, traceability from SLA to language specification, and the testing of the language and SLAs to ensure they capture the original intent of the parties. SLAng supports the expression of mutually-monitorable SLAs, for which the determination of compliance depends only on events visible to both client and provider of the service. I demonstrate that such SLAs are the most monitorable possible in a typical ASP scenario, given current monitoring technology, and describe an approximately-monitorable constraint on the accuracy of evidence used to administer such SLAs. SLAng is shown to be of practical use in a case study, evaluated against the original requirements, and compared with pre-existing languages. The evaluation of SLAng is enhanced using metrics developed to assist in assessing the contribution of a domain-specific language specification to encoding the meaning of statements in that language.

Abstract:

The French Act voted in 2006 made the choice of deep geological disposal as the reference option for the long term management of high level (HLW) and intermediate level long-lived waste. The Cige´o repository project aims at avoiding or limiting burden to future generations, which could not be achieved by the extension in time of interim storage. The reversibility as provided by the Act will maintain a liberty of choice for waste management on a duration which is comparable to new storage facility. Interim storage is required to accommodate waste as long as the repository is not available. The commissioning of the repository in 2025 will not suppress needs for interim storage. The paper describes the complementarities between existing and future interim storage facilities and the repository project: repository operational issues and planning, HLW thermal decay, support for the reversibility, etc. It shows opportunities to prepare a global optimization of waste management including the utilization at best of storage capacities and the planning of waste emplacement in the repository in such a way to facilitate operational conditions and to limit cost. Preliminary simulations of storage-disposal scenarios are presented. Thanks to an optimal use of the waste management system, provision can be made for a progressive increase of waste emplacement flow during the first operation phase of the repository. It is then possible to stabilize the industrial activity level of the repository site. An optimal utilization of interim storage can also limit the diversity of waste packages emplaced simultaneously, which facilitates the operation of the repository. 60 years minimum interim storage duration is generally required with respect to HLW thermal output. Extending this interim storage period may reduce the underground footprint of the repository. Regarding reversibility, the capability to manage waste packages potentially retrieved from the repository should be analyzed. The 2006 French Act provides for a research program on interim storage to be carried out along with the repository project development. This program has been guided by the complementarities between interim storage and the repository project. The main research issues address the longevity of storage facilities, up to 100 years, their versatility with regard to waste package types and their modularity to match future needs progressively. In parallel the dialogue between Andra and waste producers will continue to propose optimized waste management scenarios.

[Extract] In 2019 Playgroup Australia established a National Advisory Group, including representatives from government, not-for-profit, community and research sectors, to support the development of a National Playgroup Statement. The forthcoming statement is intended to provide a unifying voice for playgroup provision in practice, research and policy nationwide. Two core strategies were recommended by the National Advisory Group to support the development of the Playgroup Statement. These were: a) a literature review canvassing the existing evidence base of outcomes and benefits of playgroup participation for children and families; and b) a stakeholder consultation strategy to capture children’s and families’ experiences and perspectives of playgroup participation, and the impact of playgroup participation on their lives. This report details the findings from the stakeholder consultation strategy.
