Abstract:
One-partyism refers to the capture of government institutions by a single political party. This chapter explores the institutions that may be available to promote the virtues of multipartyism in a budding democracy while combating the vices of one-partyism. Specifically it argues that the military may have an incentive to combat one-partyism and, in doing so, promote political pluralism. A dominant party can spell trouble for the military. If a political party becomes too strong, it can threaten the military, cut back the military’s powers, or slash the military’s economic and social privileges. In contrast, by curbing one-partyism, the military may achieve more autonomy. Like the judiciary, the military may find more comfort in the division of political powers that comes with political pluralism. The desire to bring down the dominant party a peg or two may serve as an incentive for the military to promote competition among political parties.

Abstract:
Progress towards gender equality is a slow and nonlinear process. Since 19th century, people in nations around the world have exerted collective efforts to promote gender equality. However, despite improvements in gender equality today in some arenas (e.g., education), large gender gaps exist in other arenas. In the chapter, we examine and analyze research findings and various international indicators using surveys and experimental methods, from the perspective of power basis theory (Pratto, Lee, Tan, & Pitpitan, 2011). This perspective allows us to account for the various degrees of gender inequality in different arenas. In power basis theory, power is the ability to meet one's needs for survival (e.g., consuming resources, belonging to a community). Because each human being has several needs, there are different kinds of power. We argue that whereas women and men are likely to achieve equality in some kinds of power (e.g., knowledge), it is more difficult for women to achieve equality in other kinds of power (e.g., community leaders, force) and for this we offer two explanations: 1) Attaining or exercising particular kinds of power (e.g., violence) violates gender norms; thus it is difficult for women to do so; and 2) The ease with which a person can translate power in one arena to another arena—a phenomenon called power fungibility—is higher for men than for women. We delineate various processes, both from the actor’s and perceiver’s perspectives that result in sustaining power inequality between women and men. Insights from power basis theory may provide potent ways to challenge gender inequality.

Abstract:
In this chapter the apparent inadequacy of what Charles Travis calls the Stuff-Happens model prompts an investigation of the different dependency relations that obtain between a perceptual capacity and its exercise. On the Stuff-Happens model, the proximal stimulation of the sense organ sets off a sequence of alterations that terminates with the conscious perception. Such a process is purely mechanical, qua a sequence of alterations. But perception is the exercise of a capacity and the exercise of a capacity is not another alteration in a sequence. The distinctive pattern of dependence between a perceptual capacity and its non-defective exercise is marshalled in an argument for disjunctivism.

Abstract:
The new men profited from their positions in royal service to a striking degree. The richest assembled fortunes equal to those of all but the wealthiest noblemen. Offices brought fees and annuities; clients gave gifts and pensions. The king did not endow them with large landed estates, though he made a few significant grants. He did promote lucrative marriages for his servants and gave them profitable wardships, but marriage and wardship alike might prove harder to convert into lasting wealth than at first appeared.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the fear of shortage or scarcity. The Stalinist period was a time of scarcity in Eastern Europe. Shortages of even basic goods were common; accordingly, the West defined Communist regimes as places of extreme deprivation. But when confronted with the spectacle of scarce goods, refugees were anything but powerless. Asked about the material situation at home, they emphasized their cleverness, guile, and ability to work the system in order to acquire whatever they needed. Many told stories of buying and selling on the black market or even denouncing others to improve their daily existence. But although many refugees emphasized how they defied the system, broke the law, and even bribed the police, these tales did not prompt Western analysts to revise their picture of Eastern Europe’s Communist regimes as totalitarian dystopias where the population was held powerless under the shadow of paralyzing fear.

Abstract:
Anticolonial theories analyze complex power relations between the colonizer and the colonized to promote the political project of decolonization. This chapter situates anticolonial feminist theories in relation to two schools of anticolonial thinking, postcolonial and decolonial theory, particularly the strand of decolonial theory developed by the modernity/coloniality school of thought of Latin America. It compares key theoretical arguments and political projects associated with intersectionality, postcolonial feminism, and the decolonial feminism that Maria Lugones has advanced with her notion of the coloniality of gender. The chapter explores the reception of Lugones work in Latin America and the critical insights that decolonial theory offers contemporary social justice projects.
