This thesis seeks to study about African slave in Rio social context in the Second Empire (1840-1889), and during the first decade of the Old Republic. This chronology seeks to think the African descendant through three specific social moments: firstly, when slave was the workforce that moved the Brazilian agricultural export system. Furthermore, he was considered an object by master, who punished it daily. In this way, slave, who experienced that context, was part of the first social moment, which, according to this thesis, ended in 1888, when there was Abolition. Secondly, since the slaves were freed by imperial state, became Africans solely. In fact, these were freed from their shackles and whip. However, they continued under the auspices of the imperial system until the advent of the Republic Proclamation in 1889. Free slaves experienced this second social moment, which was called the interregnum by this thesis. Finally, the former slave, now experiencing the condition of African descendant emancipated, was not inserted inside modern class society that was structured after the Proclamation in 1889. This individual was left alone. Indeed, the Old Republic not caught him, who continued being a "captive" person in a society where the slavery essence remained in terms of mentality of the population. African descendant who were part in context formed the third social moment. With regard to the life of the captive African, the freed African, and the African abandoned in the imperial society and Republican of Rio de Janeiro, it is believed that Literature contributes to understanding of social types, given that the hermeneutic understanding of Ricoeur claims that fiction can reveal essential aspects of reality. This sociological perspective, rooted in literature, confirms that the writings that were produced in some time ago can be important memory sources for understanding the social relations that were supported by past context. In this sense, it is believed that the realist literature in Machado de Assis, one of the canons of national literature, is able to reveal significant insights about the social context of imperial and republican Brazil. The realist literature in Machado de Assis, comprising novels, chronic, tales, shows us the social, political, cultural contexts in nineteenth-century imperial Brazil and during the first republican decade. In this sense, it is observed that literature can support the understanding about social life in its various aspects, yesterday and contemporarily. Taking this understanding into account, this thesis seeks to analyze the representation of social types represented through captive, freed, and abandoned Africans, which are part in realistic writes by Machado de Assis (1881 -1908).

Throughout the twentieth century, black Brazilians sought to build strategies not only to better integrate into the current political and economic structure, but also to overturn the negative social representations with which they were identified throughout the country’s history, as much as a function of their slave past as for their racial origins. Thus, we seek to analyze the path taken by São Paulo’s black press – newspapers and magazines written by and for black people and dedicated exclusively to issues involving the interests of that population – in the period between 1916 and 1978. Given the established timeframe and selected publications, we follow different ways in which Africa was represented and (re)signified by discourses formulated by the writers of this alternative press in order to enable it – or not – to construct an African-Brazilian identity. The central idea is to demonstrate that the images formulated and memories mobilised to refer that continent were not limited to mere resistance to or denial of derogatory images that historically circulated in the country; on the contrary, references to Africa were subject to constant negotiations made by those men to construct Brazilian nationality through the articulation of political activism with the local intellectual landscape, as well as within formation that came from black international movements and from the political situation of African countries themselves.

Full textThe paper aims to study and understand the biography and life context of Gustavus Vassa (who also called himself Olaudah Equiano) (1750-1797), an African who worked as a sailor in the vessels of the Atlantic. Our study is based on his autobiography, written and edited in 1789. Our main objectives in this work were to verify the validity of the text as a historical source, analyze the life of this subject as a sailor during the period of his life and discuss his memory in relation to the African continent. By analyzing the text, we also seek to reconstruct aspects of the daily life of sailors that worked in the Atlantic during the 18th century and analyze the way the author presents the memory of his native community, the Igbo who currently reside in the Republic of Nigeria in West Africa. The work was based on the autobiography of this man, who called himself Olaudah Equiano, the African, but had a western forename, Gustavos Vassa. This sailor‟s work has been reedited since its first edition in 1789 and today is part of the canon of known texts of african-american literature. There are several studies connected to other research areas, such as Literature, that use this account to study the daily life of slaves and former slaves in the period in question. We tried to put to the test Gustavus Vassa‟s text as a historical source about the lives of sailors, as well as his past in Africa. Based on this African man‟s text, we sought to reconstruct a bit of the everyday life of sailors who worked in the Atlantic during the eighteenth century. In addition, we also observed that many of these sailors were African or African-Americans who commited to this activity in order to ascend socially or even seeking a better life than other slaves in the plantations of the New World.

Full textNegro culture is studied over two different periods in two distinct locations, firstly in Africa and then in Brazil. In Africa, the main period considered is between the XII and XVI centuries. We synthesized several topics such as geography, history, politics, economy and social organization pertaining to Bantu Africa and West Africa. This context is used to describe daily life, human ideology and significant aspects of magic and religion. Using a dynamic and an interpretative perspective, we analyzed life and death as a cultural process. Also emphasized are the daily rituals and other customs marking important events in individual and communal life, from both a spiritual and a material dimension. Our interpretation of cultures supports our presupposition of unity though diversity and diversity through unity In Brazil, we focused on the transferred religion and its evolution. In a summarized fashion, we characterize the European scenario in between the XVI and XIX centuries. This helps us put into context the slave trade and the ideology of the colonizers during this time. xiii Supported by the concept of reinterpretation, we address the religion of these Africans in their new environment, and search for the beginnings and evolution of a specific system of religion called Candomblé. In spite of a dichotomy between the Nàgó and Bantu rites, we characterize Candomblé as a unified manifestation of Negro culture, and as a form of opposition to the White religion. We also reveal the contradiction experienced by the Candomblé adepts, who were inserted into Western ideology yet continue to practice rites sustained by a traditional African vision of the world. In our interpretative anthropology approach, we utilized the rudiments of relativity theory, and also strived to insert our work within the perspective of esthetic anthropology.

Full textThe major cultural changes that are emerging nowadays present a new identity and a sharp interrogation of its theories apart from social-relational tensions. In this respect, the object of this research presents a scientific theme in general for curiosity purposes. Brought to the camp of Religious Sciences, it aims at integrating the debate process about different dimensions of cultural pluralism and religious phenomenon of the contemporary society. The study base itself on a multi-cultural catholic religious group: The Comboni Missionary Institute. In its derivation, the thesis analizes the paradigm of the inter-cultural experience of Daniel Sorur Pharim Deng, of the Dinka African ethnic group, as an anthological illustration of cultural identity of a black man in the context of this multi-cultural catholic institution. In this context, the cultural identity of the black African must be understood in its inter-cultural relation, as collective and plural. Secondly, the thesis not only dares to discuss cultural identity and inter-cultural concepts pointing to its academic insufficiency and ambiguity in its ecclesial and neo-liberal use, but also aims at its living validity. Lastly, after reflecting about the fundamental conditions for this intercultural dialogue, the research proposes the inter-culturation paradigm that will get rid of the silence between ethnocentric acculturation and inculturation in the multi-cultural context. The inter-culturation helps to understand the theme in a concomitant, articulate and various ways, guarding all the lived experiences and expressions of the group s common ideal and at the same time safeguarding the wishes of all in the partiality of each cultural identity. In this way, the discussion of this thesis aims not only at operational horizon that is capable of facing the major challenges of cultures living together peacefully, but also a presentation of research sector in Religious Sciences, where many aspects are yet to be explored. Basically, this study operates in the interface between Anthropology, Religious Sciences and Theology and makes an appeal to discuss the problems raised by the religious phenomenon in the inter-cultural and inter-disciplinary horizon

Countries of the African Diaspora, in particular Brazil, have as heritage the ancestral practices that constitute the sociocultural structure, the history, and the memory of these groups. However, these countries are experiencing a process that does not properly recognize these peoples, especially because of political-economic interests that neglect and stereotype the vast African universe, marked by knowledge, science, and worldviews. Taking this into consideration, our study is part of a set of initiatives aimed at highlighting the importance of preserving Afro-diasporic memories in Brazil, focusing on a black territory in São Paulo – Parque Peruche Neighborhood, located in the Northern region of the city of São Paulo (SP). Our main objectives are: (1) participate in the production of memories and monitor narratives of the diversity and memory of Afro-diasporic groups; (2) participate in debates about the resignification of ancestral oral practices in the African Diaspora, and (3) suggest possible interpretations on the presence and permanence of Black-African ancestry in the São Paulo territory. As a specific objective, we intend to draw a parallel between the current discussion about African heritage in Parque Peruche Neighborhood and the way the paths and narratives of its interlocutors, guardians of the black memories of such region, are developed. Based on oral history, the methodological procedure will be carried out in order to associate the bibliographic material with the fieldwork material

Full textThe african contemporary writer abandons the writing techniques of his predecessors. He uses all the elements of the text, of the speech, of the character, of the time, of the space, of the story. . . Removing them from any reference to a pre-existing system. The substitution of the concrete for the abstract and the repetition are a sort of definition of things. So the writer faces two difficulties. On the one hand, he has to express the population's revolutionary hopes and make them evercome. He has to convince his reader. And on the other hand, he must find an answer to this question: how can we convey social conflicts in the shape of images, symbols and myths which belong to a definite collective memory and remain at the same time comprehensible by all the readers. The emotional intensity and the affective force which are contained in these images, symbols and myths are more expressive and affective than any other form of communication. From that time, we can't consider the african literature just as a form or as a report. An ethnologique approach is necessary to understand the novel. Thus a new stage of writing requires a new method of reading and interpretation

Full textThe socio-linguistic conditions of black africa are summarized together with the ideological positions connected with linguistic problems. This background is used with a view to defining the concrete problems posed in the use of french in the african novel. The corpus is composed of five works : une vie de boy by ferdinand oyono, les bouts de bois de dieu by sembene ousmane, les soleils des independances by ahmadou kourouma, le pleurer-rire by henri lopes and les sept solitudes de lorsa lopez by sony labou tansi. The aim of the study is to take account of the way the french language is treated in each novel. Analyses based on a structural linguistic approach demonstrate various ways in which african languages are present in the french text, underlining stylistic effects and particular narratological choices. Thematic studies also help to bring into relief the various representations of the languages in the diegesis. Finally, the argument is widened to include the psychological and institutionnal implications of writing in french, as the quest for identity and linguistic choices are often linked in modern literature

Full textThis Project mentions about the impact of an extension program in continued education in the life of elderly. For this analysis it was chosen the Social Inclusion Program denominated Open University of Useful time ( Universidade Aberta do Tempo Útil ) offered by Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie/SP, that has as main goals : Giving educational activities focused to the update and knowledge‟s acquisition in many knowledge areas, develop sociocultural abilities, privileging the happiness and the pleasure of getting along with the culture and promote the integration of the elderly in many segments of the society . The project had as general objective comprehend the various aspects that implicate in the changes of the elderly‟s behavior when frequenting the continued education program. The specific objectives were: show the main contributions made by the recent studies in the area, identify and characterize in the Brazilian legislation the directives targeted to the elderly, describe the main cognitive aspects, affection and social observed in the representations elaborated by them, and analyze from these representations what the changes for social, political and economic that this new phase of the life proposes. The method used was based on descriptive and exploration qualitative analysis. As result, it was observed that the studies so far developed are related mainly to the medicine area, psychology, physiotherapy taking as main focus the chronological indicator. The program of social inclusion researched has demonstrated by itself a differential in the elderlies‟ life, giving them better quality of life, innovating and creating new friendship, as well as enriching the experiences exchange. Regarding to the public policies it still has a lot to do for the population of Brazilian elderlies mainly the aspects targeted for the improvement of quality life and education. The reports show us as well that the participation in the program of extension has demystified prejudices and terminologies before seen as exclusion by society and by the younger students as well. The cognitive aspects, affection and social have presented improvement in the elderlies‟ quality of life in many aspects, mainly the aspect for quality of life, knowledge, arts and feel them useful . The research has set up itself as an isolated action, innovating the research and presenting a reality little explored and spread, where the interest restricts only to specific demands and targeted to the interest of medicine area, moving away other possibilities that complement the improvement from the population‟s quality of life and the education, especially from the elderlies.

In fact a socio-anthropological reading of the novel an approach, which is at the same time diachronic and analytical of the relations of power in it, reveal that this crisis of the thought about africa by herself, is the work on the other hand of the disfunctunction induced by colonisation, and on other hand of the crisis of modernity (the modern state). If then the crisis of power in africa is political, is first of all, and above all, cultural

The changes that have taken place in the field of religion in Brazil in the last few decades have deeply affected religions of African origin — umbanda and candomble. Among these changes, a holy war waged by the neopentecostals against these religions has been the main focus of social-anthropological analyses, which, however, are aimed at interpreting these attacks by the neopentecostals. The aim of this thesis is to study not only the reaction of the Afro-Brazilian actors to these attacks, but also the other changes they are carrying out in this religious universe. The articulations of the black movement with these religions will be covered in a historical perspective which will allow us to compare the proposals of the different phases of this social movement for Candomble and Umbanda, as well as with the proposals of the federations. Based on sociological theories of action and on contemporary anthropological theories, the field research was carried out in the Umbanda and Candomble centres in Juiz de Fora, in the State of Minas Gerais, from 2005 to 2008.

Full textThis study aims to investigate the educational relevance of the Jornal Ìrohìn (Ìrohìn Newspaper), a newspaper which focuses the African-descendent universe in Brazil and in the world, giving approaches related to the African-descendent communitys interests, particularly the specificity of combating racism. The present investigation is developed taking as departure point the theoretical reference based in the notion of episthemecide, as developed by Carneiro. The references include also Sodré, Munanga, Cardoso, among others, and the methodological approach is related with discourse analysis, combined with theoretical studies. The definition of articles, essays, interviews and other matters approached by Ìrohìn was done having in mind to give emphasis to the educational aspects as attitudes to be developed or as matters focusing especially education, as public policies to attend civil rights, as the Law nr. 10.639/2003 and the fight for Quotas, in Brazil. The spread of time is from 1996 to 2006, also comparing opinions presented by other media vehicles, in favor or against the main agenda proposed by Ìrohìn.

This master thesis intends to understand the emergence of Brazilian constitutionalism in the face of the political dynamics mobilized by the African diaspora. For this purpose, it uses the category of “Black Atlantic”, developed by the British sociologist Paul Gilroy, as an analytical instrument for understanding the geopolitical and cultural reality formed by the trajectories of black people in modernity and colonialism. In addition, it takes the Haitian Revolution as methodological and hermeneutical key able to displacing the hegemonic narratives on the history of constitutional law and the dominant accounts of modernity produced by political philosophy. With these two contributions, a concrete constitutional experience is debated, the Brazilian Constituent Assembly of 1823. It seeks to understand how the fear of the assumption of the constitutional form by the black population shaped the concepts of citizenship, freedom, equality and nation in the genesis of Brazilian constitutionalism. This movement aims to problematize the connections between the history of constitutional law, the colonial enterprise and the mobilization of “race” in modernity.
